Talk about TBT...
GOG released F117A Stealth Fighter today. What a classic flight sim. They just don't make them like this anymore.
I was thinking it was going to be an insta-purchase for me, but then I got to looking at the screenshots and came to the conclusion that there is just no way that it will hold up these days. Its a game from a time passed and probably best left as a pleasant memory.
Still, a really brilliant sim. I am glad its available.
im reading a lot of this.......
sometimes great games from the 90s were great because it was the 90s - now its not quite the same
there was high hopes for a HD remake of Outcast but it failed the kickstarter - again, probably best left in the past
I still have the Stirke Eagle III floppies. :)
I played the heck out of that game when it came out! It's tempting even with the old school graphics.
Its funny remember playing it and at that time was considered state of the art graphics:). We have come a long way.
I played F -19 stealth fighter on the C64....but not this
I recall enjoying F-19 as much as any modern sim. That and 'Red Lightning' were played to death back in my Amiga days.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fthumb%2F2%2F21%2FRed_Lightning_Coverart.png%2F200px-Red_Lightning_Coverart.png&hash=014cff3385e0062141cb2973b4f6783960cb76e5)
I play my version under DOSBOX all the time. I still crank up SE II as well. I still have my F-117 printed manual. Those were the days.
I get the comments about "not standing up" but I have no problem with the graphics myself. I simply have not found another sim that replaces F-117 in terms of gameplay.
Anybody know if you can use flight stick or only keyboard and mouse with this version?

It supports a two button joystick just fine. It also has great keyboard support. You can adjust key sensitivity if you are flying with the keyboard.
I used to cast long, lustful stares at this one back at Babbages in my Amiga heyday but never played it. I agree it's too retro for my digital tastes today but I'm tempted to buy it just to support GOG's excellent work here.

Same.
I had the microprose pack Strike eagle 3 and F117A. SE3 was fun, if lame compared to Falcon 3. A simple intro to flight simming. F117A was a bit better.

I remember just flying around because the graphics were so cool. I think it was my first flight sim that had multiple buildings, streets, lights -- you know, graphics for stuff other than your target.
Of course, my first computer was a CPM radio shack home kit with 10.5 inch floppy disks, and I have a thumbdrive 1000x the capacity of my second computer, and IBM XT -- you know, the one with the massive 30mb hard drive. A long way indeed..
Of course, I didn't feel that way when my wireless keyboard died the other day and I used a ps/2 plug from approximately the 3rd century for my old wired keyboard. Yes, somehow I managed to skip the entire "usb wired keyboard" phase.
I could write a short novel on my experiences with the game. I remember one mission, over North Korea, where I shot down 13 Yaks with my internal gun.
I remember another mission where my idiot brother-in-law flew into the teeth of a heavily defended Soviet Union, and ended up with a Silver Star and 2000 points. He hasn't let me forget it since, and it's been more than 20 years!
This is the one...yeah, the graphics aren't that great, but it's the GAME PLAY that I like. For this reason, I still play Master of Magic, Imperialism II, Darklands, and Baldur's Gate.

Wait, your right, so did I. This game looks a lot like F-19. I wonder if it's just the PC version?
F-117 was the follow up to F-19, after the world found out what the Stealth Fighter actually looked like.

F-117 was the follow up to F-19, after the world found out what the Stealth Fighter actually looked like.
One of the model manufacturers, Revell I think, sold an F-19 model long before it became unclassified. The edges were soft and rounded, not at all like the multi-faceted F-117A.
Tom Clancy also wrote about a "cathedral bell" shaped stealth aircraft, in Red Storm Rising.
The disinformation of the USAF was pretty impressive. Back in the very early 1980's, I turned down a classified assignment to Nevada, to provide weather support to the nascent stealth fighter wing.
Even this game has a variant where there is an internal cannon. As most of you know, all weapons are kept internal to the bomb bay, with no gun capability at all.
During Desert Storm, when we were briefed on the REAL capabilities of this airplane, it became apparent to everyone that the abilities exceeded our wildest imaginations..that the RCS, or radar cross section, of this airplane was microscopic compared to all other aircraft in the world.
This was why they went in first, to destroy the Iraqi target acquisition systems. Like Lt. Gen Hoerner, the USAF Commander in theater told my Colonel and I, and a bunch of others, after the first night of the war, the Iraqi's would be blind, and deaf..as their C3 (command, control, and communications) would be greatly degraded.
Amazing aircraft, and an amazing game.
Both games were great, i still load them up on Dosbox from time to time. My favorite missions in cold war and limited war settings were taking pictures of enemy terrorist camps, ships, etc, also dropping supplies to agents behind the lines or landing on a secret airstrip.
So another dumb question....if this was an old dos game, how does this work with the gog version? Does it include some kind of dos emulator?
Most of the DOS games on GOG are already wrapped in a DOSbox configuration right out of the install package. It's actually pretty slick. Just install, read about the old-timey keyboard commands, and dive right into the pixillated goodness.
Ok, I am going in:)
Interesting...
download and install was easy.....
starting the game...you have to adjust your joystick each time...kind of wish the settings would stick, but not a huge deal
almost forgot about the old days DRM....finding a picture in the manual to prove you own the game:) Wish they could have taken this out...you get an aircraft chart, nut when I alt-tab to look at it, messes up my screen
Did a training mission....flight controls were pretty easy, especially compared to all the modern flight simulators where I can never figure out...got to fire a few mavericks, of course missed though:) Will have to read the manual to figure things out....
Not bad for an old game so far and for only $5...I will have to get into the campaign stuff over the weekend.
Lots of great memories of this game, but flight simulators are definitely a genre where I choose not to go backwards.
ok raise your hands...
how many here glided, no matter how long, to reach a runway in Stike Eagle?
I tend to agree with UCG - often these games were great because of the time they were in. I haven't revisited a "classic" from my youth that I got the same feeling of euphoria from back in the 90's.
One thing I do think though is games were games back then. They seem to be more work nowadays.

Yes, I had one of those models when I was a kid.
I also have two copies of JD Webster's
Air Superiority tabletop game, which came out in '86 or '87 and has the old "F-19" guesswork version with the curvy bell shape represented. I think it was even listed as being supersonic and able to carry AtA missiles in that one. Surprising because all the other aircraft data cards were pretty much right on the money.
I'm pretty sure the
real look and info started coming out in the press after Op Just Cause in Panama ('88) and started filtering into common knowledge. That was the first conflict they admitted to using them and went somewhat public IIRC. So most gaming stuff after that point had switched to the real F-117 look, and not the "F-19" guesstimate.

A big plus! One of the main reasons why I've never owned a gaming console is the controller.
I second Fleet Defender. That was one tough sim. I will break down and get this and looking at Sword of the Samurai too.
F-177A brings back so many memories! We're currently in our last week of school where I make my students play Rise of Nations competitively both to teach them more history than their coach/teachers taught them all year, and to get them into actual gaming as opposed to playing Flappy Birds all day... If I had more time I'd put F-117A in the mix and let the more advanced ones try that out.
Tablets and 'casual gaming' have really killed interest in anything that requires longer than 30 seconds to figure out. At least for the 11-14 year olds I teach.

As an aviation geek I always like the aircraft recognition stuff. Practice long enough and you get pretty good. (Like the SU-27 and the Mig-29 look ALMOST identical but you can tell the SU-27 by the extended "stinger" tailcone.)
Still I may pick it up just to push GoG for more Microprose stuff. I can live with out the DRM.
Anybody that owns this version or the older version.....
Not sure what I am doing wrong...can't appear to select and lock on a target...followed the tutorial where it said to cycle with the "B" key, but doesn't appear I can ever get a lock. Am I missing something?
Stretching my brain cells, but I think you need to be in weapons range to lock and launch. You may be able to "target/see" things, but you still need to be within range of the weapon to shoot. I'm sure I will break down this weekend and grab the game. It's already in my cart with a few other Microprose classics.

Thanks Capn....but I have literally flow over the targets without ever getting a lock so I am pretty sure I have been in range...I even line up the target in a straight line heading right at it...I am sure I am just missing a step, but couldn't figure it out even after reading the manual.
Hurry up and buy it so you can help me figure it out:) Not being able to shoot things kind of makes it hard to have fun:)
With that said, I think well worth the $5, even with the dated graphics....I hope more of these old titles like this make it at GOG.
Yahoo...figured it out....was missing one key stroke....took out a radar site for my first kill:)

Yep, already bought early and installed a couple of days ago....was very easy and no issues running the game, except for some oddities in trying to ALT+Tab to other windows while playing...no biggie.
You know you're going to make me buy another game I don't have time to play, right? But damn those screenshots remind me of some good times with F19. This AAR at SimHQ (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2634940/1) isn't helping me either.

$5, does a hamburger from your local burger place:) Really a no brainer if you enjoyed the original.....again, graphics are yuck, but the whole setup and campaign seem really good....the flight controls are very easy for someone like me challenged with today's simulators.

I just landed, damaged, on an aircraft carrier, with realistic landings. There is NO room for error, and my palms were sweaty when I was done. I have 19 missions invested in this pilot, and I didn't want to lose him. This is a GREAT game.

I generally don't get shot at, or even detected. But, there are times when you HAVE to open your bomb bay. I was doing the photo thing at a bridge near Berlin, with a MIG about 15 kilometers behind me.
Despite the fast open-click-click-click-close of the camera, he pulsed JUST at the wrong time. I had no time at all to avoid the missile he fired. I was too low really, to do much. Couldn't climb, as everyone for miles around was already heading my way.
Still, I got my Distinguished Flying Cross for this one. After a refresher of about 20 missions, I am at veteran opponents, and realistic landings. This game is absolutely as good as I remembered it, more than 20 years ago. How many games can I say this about? Not many. Railroad Tycoon 2, Master of Magic, Darklands, and now this. All four are Microprose games.

I loved these games back in the day - and it's true they had
something that games just do not have now...but I simply couldn't go back to games that looked like that. Heck - I had a hard time getting back into Microprose Gunship! which was a great looking game

Gunship 2000
Still waiting for M1 Tank Platoon in GOG.
But I'm having trouble downloading my games. They don't appear in the Downloader and the manual download results in an error.

I don't know why but the graphics don't really bother me. Sure it would be nice if it looked better but for me the great game play more than makes up for it.
I saw they had the Wing Commander games on there - they were some of my favourites...but I still don't think I could go back.
I'd like to see Strike Commander remade. I liked the idea of being a mercenary and having to juggle missions with money.

saw this at simhq -
Hi, i mentioned this in another thread but it may be missed as that thread was referring to vmware. Well that isnt necessary now as m1tp2 can play in glorious glide graphics.and doesnt crash to desktop after completing a mission. How? Well the good man behind zeussoftware's nglide wrapper has made an experimental patch for both te 1.1 and 1.2 versions and they do seem to work well - these can found in the forum thread at the nglide site that i made in the problems section. i will attach it here soon though too.
I am not sure if anyone else is excited about this, but i am keen to play this a bit more between all the other sims i am resurrecting in my scant free time. No doubt this will be lost again with windows 8

I'd consider it if I had a better idea of what "GOG" is.
And having just gone to the website, I have to be honest - the site doesn't provide much clarity.
I found this:
"GOG.com is built with tons of our own super-uber complex algorithms, x-dimensional-databases and other stuff so wicked, that sometimes even we aren't really sure how it works... But it's not only that. We're also using some of our favourite third-party icons, frameworks, libraries and technology and we would like to send kudos to people who created them:"
Which did not fill me with confidence.
I'll pass on sending them money, for now. Incidentally, the MicroProse brand is still active, so I'm not sure what the status of the titles are. Ownership may have passed back to the original creators - I believe this happened with Sid Meier - but I thought Hasbro had been involved at some point as well.

You know you're going to make me buy another game I don't have time to play, right? But damn those screenshots remind me of some good times with F19. This AAR at SimHQ (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2634940/1) isn't helping me either.
I had both F-19 and F-117. Actually, still have them. If I could figure some way to reinstall from my 3.5 inch floppies, I'd do it in a heartbeat...
Or you could just pony up the doe and get back in the game.
I'd consider it if I had a better idea of what "GOG" is.

well you would see that if you deliberately went past the game section, the community section and went straight to the 'thanks' page
or you could just look at the games library and use some common sense - something youre not unfamiliar with
Great lead. Here it is: http://www.gog.com/thanks
I went to the thanks page, obviously, since I quoted from it.
I can assume from the insults that those who have responded don't wish to give clear answers. I would appreciate some insights rather than just tirades, as yes, I clearly don't get it.
Is the site truly above board (i.e. operating with the consent of the rights owners?) I would expect some kind of explanation somewhere if that was the case. If not, I don't see the difference between this, and a bit torrent site.
The same kind of conversations go on at BGG re: out of print magazines and board games.

Yes, it is absolutely legit.
The titles they sell are also DRM-free. You get an easy installer package.. that you just install. No activations, logins, or other nonsense.
I've had an occasional issue with some of the older stuff but I think most of those have been limited to
Great Battles of Alexander in the
Great Battles Collection there. Alexander crashes on me somewhat regularly although I've played quite a bit of GB Of Hannibal without issue.
There was one other which didn't like the Logitech mouse program running in the background, but closing it down solved the problem.
I have around 20 or 30 games from GOG, which I've frequented for years. Been quite happy with them.

Once I found that what you had quoted was in fact from that site, I corrected myself - but I just didn't understand what made you think it wasn't legit?
And I have never been to a bit torrent site - but I would suspect they don't sell games from what I understand of them.

There's a link in the middle of the landing page describing their ethos, drm policy, and operating practices
But you looked at the thanks page to formulate your opinion about them? That was my point
there was a game called Apache from the mid 90s that was very clean and crisp to look at and lots of fun to play.

That will give you numerous flyable helos in an old game, with a bunch of different dynamic campaign locations to choose from too. It's old enough to feel a bit retro but is still passable as a modern game. I think the somewhat blocky terrain is it's biggest problem but they upgraded much in the game and are still working on modding it. The source code was released years ago so there's been a lot done on it.

Does that Desert Storm mod come with the extra flyable aircraft or did you have to d/l & install them separately?
Also.. which versions of SF2 did it require? I suppose SF2: Israel is one, for the terrain?

F-117 was the follow up to F-19, after the world found out what the Stealth Fighter actually looked like.
One of the model manufacturers, Revell I think, sold an F-19 model long before it became unclassified. The edges were soft and rounded, not at all like the multi-faceted F-117A.
Tom Clancy also wrote about a "cathedral bell" shaped stealth aircraft, in Red Storm Rising.
Yes, I had one of those models when I was a kid.
I also have two copies of JD Webster's Air Superiority tabletop game, which came out in '86 or '87 and has the old "F-19" guesswork version with the curvy bell shape represented. I think it was even listed as being supersonic and able to carry AtA missiles in that one. Surprising because all the other aircraft data cards were pretty much right on the money.
I'm pretty sure the real look and info started coming out in the press after Op Just Cause in Panama ('88) and started filtering into common knowledge. That was the first conflict they admitted to using them and went somewhat public IIRC. So most gaming stuff after that point had switched to the real F-117 look, and not the "F-19" guesstimate.
My recollection is it became known when one of them crashed in CONUS during a night time training flight.

All the stuff you need are in the 3 zip files. But the base game is SF2 Europe because of all the NATO stuff. The map is custom so no need for Israel tiles.
Thanks for posting this, Jarhead. I'm putting it on my wishlist for the near future. I loved this game - played it to death on the Babbage's store computer where I worked, printed out screenshots and built a rough 3D cockpit out of the screenshots for a store display...I didn't have my own IBM until late 1989 and worked there for many months prior, so my only IBM gaming fix came from hanging out in the back of the store and playing the crap out of everything I could get my hands on. Those were the days.

Anyone that lived anywhere near Tonopah Nevada knew about these for years, before they became common knowledge.
A very large C-17A landed at Tonopah every Monday morning, from Nellis AFB, and took all the troops back home to Nellis on Friday. I know this, as I turned down an assignment as WWO (Wing Weather Officer) for the flying wing back in 1983.
Do any of you have F117A installed through GOG?
I bought it a while ago but never had time to futz with it. Tonight I decided to give it a try. I'm in the cockpit and pretty much all the controls work except for the throttle (key command: SHIFT + for max power, = to increase thrust, - to decrease). I press SHIFT + over and over and over and over again, and even =, but nothing happens. No engine sound, no thrust, nothing.
If I hit SHIFT - (which is immediate no thrust), I hear the engines spool down. But as I am sitting on the runway with THRUST 000, this makes no sense. No engine sound, no thrust, nothing.
And yes, I set brakes and flaps and changed my radar to NAV - did everything I can think of. Irritatingly, the manual just says "Turn on your engines by tapping Max Power (SHIFT +)." Yeah, I tried that about 100 times, and nothing.
Every other control seems to work except for the engine throttle, which kind of makes this more of a sit in the cockpit and do nothing simulator. Any ideas?
If this is some weird simple fix, I'd be most grateful to hear it.

Thanks, bobarossa. I looked for and found the forum you were talking about (I missed it in my search).
One of the threads recommended remapping the key, which I tried to do, but of course that didn't work. I posted in the two threads on that board that indicated issues - one with the recommendation, one without. I also sent a support request to GOG as this makes absolutely zero bloody sense. No reason all the keys should work except those two.

No dumb questions, sir. It's not a USB keyboard - it's the original one that came with the desktop with a PS/2 connector. (It's almost eight years old but never had this issue before. The keys work fine in Notepad, Word, and everything else.)

In the install folder you should see a file called dosboxF117A_single.conf. Open it with notepad and try commenting out the keyb us statement
rem keyb us <====like that
save the file and try again.
I don't know if you have a "us" keyboard or not.....
It does make me wonder if it's a dosbox problem rather than an F-117 issue.

There's a bit in there that worked for me - specifically, this:
QuoteActually, rather than disabling the device, there is another workaround if you want to keep using it.
In Device Manager under Keyboards, update the "Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard" to a "HID-compliant device"
Here's a screenshot: http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1909/tilde.png
Restart the game if you had it open, and presto, now you can type tilde's and still use your remote.
Thanks DQ and GR and bob. Appreciate the input, all. O0

I played a lot of F-19 back in the day too and actually liked it better than F-117A back then, even though the latter had much improved graphics. Hopefully they add F-19 at some point and perhaps F-15 Strike Eagle, too.

By all rights I should have loved F117 more than F19. Maybe it was the crappier sound design? -- don't know, but I remember liking F19 more, and being REALLY REALLY CONFUSED as to why.
(And then booting up PC Red Baron instead. O0 Incidentally, that was the first game I ever got for PC.)
I loved Red Baron. I always flew as a German and built up massive numbers of kills. When I got in with the 'elite' squadrons and went on a mission with Herman Goering, I'd shoot him down immediately upon mission start. For ze Fatherland!
Red Baron, IIRC, let you shoot down three friendlies before pulling you from the cockpit, so that was always my one "accidental" slip-up. O:-)
Really, how can you guys even play these games today?
They were indeed awesome in their time, but we have so many better flightsims to choose from now.
I could understand you wanting to play something like F22 ADF or Eurofighter 2000, or the Jane's titles... But this one? Mindboggling! :D
^ Because my computer is an old POS and can only run "classic" flight sims.
I might be able to get away with IL-2 or something like that but nothing big. If I want a TRUE flight sim, I'll wait until I have a system that has enough oompf to run it and do so beautifully. I also don't have a flight stick, either, but I played F-117A and F-19 both with keyboard only back in the day, so it's okay.
For me it's the same reason why I don't own a gaming console. A lot less button/joystick input required to play these older games. Once you add more buttons than up,down, left, right, a & b I get easily confused. :D
I dunno, bbmike. I think some of the older games have a ton of keyboard commands...remember the overlays you'd put over your keyboard to help you spot keys quickly? F117A was but one of many that had such a set-up. Without it, it's tough to remember what key does what, especially in the heat of combat, except through practice.
True, but those overlays made it easier for me...I think. Now that you mention it, didn't you also get printed maps of the regions in the game? I seem to remember having those as well.
Ugh, I sorta want to hit this.
I played F-19 until my eyes bled. It was my very first sim.
I find it hard to believe that you would not be able to run Falcon. Its an old game too and has very low system requirements for today's standards. :)
Still even if you cannot, then I would choose any of the Jane's sims over these EGA graphics 'sims'.
While very nice in the day they are very archaic now, even compared to something like Harrier Jump Jet by Domark. Or Apache Longbow by Jane's.
But hey, if you're having fun, right!! :) Thats All that matters. Who am I to tell people what to play. I just find it fascinating that people still like to play these fossils?
I'd like to see the old Dynamix Aces sims GOGified to run on later systems. It's been ages since I took a Mosquito 'Tse-tse Fly' out on an anti-ship mission.
I seem to remember putting it in god mode once, then dropping endless ordinance all over Libya. That was a fun night. All military targets of course.
I would strongly recommend getting the steam version of this game.
The GOG version still requires you to answer a question on what type of aircraft is displayed. Get it wrong, and you're boned.
The steam version does away with the copy protection requirement entirely. Much better.

You can just look up the answer in the manual or the aircraft ID card (can't remember which). They come with the game.

No it doesn't. I am not sure what version of the game you are playing but my GoG version zips blissfully past any DRM questions.
Yeah, I've not run into any copy protection issues with any GOG game, except the Star Trek 25th Anniversary one, though I have not tried to play it since I ran into my minor issue.
Hi, everyone.
I loved playing F-19 but never played F-117A mainly due to the fact that I really loved the Revell F-19 model I had and was not a fan of the faceted diamond body of the actual stealth fighter. I was actually looking for another Revell F-19 model to replace the one I had growing up when I stumbled upon a site that mentioned the old F-19 game I used to love playing.
Following one link after another looking into getting a copy of the game again led me here. I am now curious about F-117A and considering buying it and had a couple of questions to all who are still following this thread.
I know that you can choose to have 2 different weapons set up one for the real F-117A and one for the fictional F-19. But is the aircraft model for the F-19 available in this game? If it is not, are you guys aware of any mods that makes the F-19 aircraft model available for this game?
Thank you in advance.
The F-19 model is not available in-game, only the 'real' F-117, though as you noted players can opt for the gun and somewhat larger loadout of the F-19. I don't know about any mods changing the graphics back to an F-19 Frisbee.
(I myself always played the sequel with the F-19 loadout capabilities. I appreciated having the real life limitations as an option, and played a few missions like that for a change of pace, but those limitations are for a joint operation aircraft with limited specific mission capabilities working together with other aircraft like it, and in concert with other aircraft following in behind. Which are just not options for playing the Nighthawk game, where you're expected to solo missions.)
Thank you for the quick reply, JasonPratt. Truly appreciated.
I do want to play the game now that I am much older and have a better appreciation for the F-117A I really would have liked to have the option to have the F-19 model available though. It is far more aesthetically pleasing to me in every way.
