F117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0 on GOG

F-177A brings back so many memories!  We're currently in our last week of school where I make my students play Rise of Nations competitively both to teach them more history than their coach/teachers taught them all year, and to get them into actual gaming as opposed to playing Flappy Birds all day...  If I had more time I'd put F-117A in the mix and let the more advanced ones try that out.

Tablets and 'casual gaming' have really killed interest in anything that requires longer than 30 seconds to figure out.  At least for the 11-14 year olds I teach.

F-117 was the follow up to F-19, after the world found out what the Stealth Fighter actually looked like.

One of the model manufacturers, Revell I think, sold an F-19 model long before it became unclassified. T

Interesting...

download and install was easy.....

starting the game...you have to adjust your joystick each time...kind of wish the settings would stick, but not a huge deal

almost forgot about the old days DRM....finding a picture in the manual to prove you own the game:)  Wish they could have taken this out...you get an aircraft chart, nut when I alt-tab to look at it, messes up my screen

Did a training mission....flight controls were pretty easy, especially compared to all the modern flight simulators where I can never figure out...got to fire a few mavericks, of course missed though:)  Will have to read the manual to figure things out....

Not bad for an old game so far and for only $5...I will have to get into the campaign stuff over the weekend.

So good news already..they released an update to remove the aircraft ID DRM...yahoo...I couldn't figure half of them out:)

As an aviation geek I always like the aircraft recognition stuff. Practice long enough and you get pretty good. (Like the SU-27 and the Mig-29 look ALMOST identical but you can tell the SU-27 by the extended "stinger" tailcone.)

Still I may pick it up just to push GoG for more Microprose stuff. I can live with out the DRM.

Anybody that owns this version or the older version.....

Not sure what I am doing wrong...can't appear to select and lock on a target...followed the tutorial where it said to cycle with the "B" key, but doesn't appear I can ever get a lock.  Am I missing something?

Stretching my brain cells, but I think you need to be in weapons range to lock and launch. You may be able to "target/see" things, but you still need to be within range of the weapon to shoot. I'm sure I will break down this weekend and grab the game. It's already in my cart with a few other Microprose classics.

Thanks Capn....but I have literally flow over the targets without ever getting a lock so I am pretty sure I have been in range...I even line up the target in a straight line heading right at it...I am sure I am just missing a step, but couldn't figure it out even after reading the manual.

Hurry up and buy it so you can help me figure it out:)  Not being able to shoot things kind of makes it hard to have fun:)

With that said, I think well worth the $5, even with the dated graphics....I hope more of these old titles like this make it at GOG.

So another dumb question....if this was an old dos game, how does this work with the gog version?  Does it include some kind of dos emulator?

You install it, click on the icon, and it runs. ALL my GoG games, 30+, run beautifully. No need to hassle with dosbox, or anything else. Just click and play.

Yep, already bought early and installed a couple of days ago....was very easy and no issues running the game, except for some oddities in trying to ALT+Tab to other windows while playing...no biggie.

You know you're going to make me buy another game I don't have time to play, right? But damn those screenshots remind me of some good times with F19. This AAR at SimHQ isn't helping me either.

$5, does a hamburger from your local burger place:)  Really a no brainer if you enjoyed the original.....again, graphics are yuck, but the whole setup and campaign seem really good....the flight controls are very easy for someone like me challenged with today's simulators.

Actually feels like a GAME although has simulator qualities....maybe that is why I played my games so much more back then versus now where I try them and have very short shelf lives.....

I just landed, damaged, on an aircraft carrier, with realistic landings. There is NO room for error, and my palms were sweaty when I was done. I have 19 missions invested in this pilot, and I didn't want to lose him. This is a GREAT game.
