Just had our first rocket attack on Tel-Aviv this conflict.
Since I live nearby, I even heard the warning alarm all the way to my house.
Fortunately the Iron Dome system shot it down.
Hope the barrages over T.A won't cause too many traffic problems, I have to commute there everyday for work.
Keep your head down!

It's hard for us westerners to fathom how F'd up the thinking in the middle east is. Firing rockets into another country seems so far outside civilized life they (the people doing it) should be dumped into the sea.

I was just out side Tel Aviv last November during that rocket storm. Very odd situation. At least up that far you are on the extreme edge of the rocket range.

Iran to Syria and then routed through whatever networks they have.
As I've been reading up on this latest round of rocket attacks (and let me tell you, I'm having to dig through US news sites to find stuff) I am struck by the realization that I really can't comprehend what people in Israel are going through. And they have been putting up with this for way to long. Then I started thinking if this happened in the US from one of our neighbors or from one state to another the response would be overwhelming. (Well I would like to think it would be but given the current state of our politics who knows). The whole "hypocrisy" of the world's reaction to Israel's response every time this happens is sickening.

Tpek- if you can discuss it, is there a chance you'll be called up? I've been wondering the same thing. What with the civil wars in Syria and Iraq, with Hamas possibly being stretched thin due to efforts to support Assad in Syria, this could be an ideal time for the IDF to clean house in southern Lebanon.
I think moving on south Lebanon would be a bad idea for Israel. So far, even if the press doesn't portray it that way, Israel has the "We're just defending ourselves" card. Nothing has come out of Lebanon... at least directly. They should, however, just bulldoze Gaza in to the sea.
It is surprising, that with all that has just happened in Ukraine, that anyone could see Israel as the bad guy in all of this..... How can the press not see it's own hypocrisy?

this! let the surrounding countries kill themselves off. for all of my data mining and conversations and research I'm still not convinced that the IDF has taken the lessons of the last round to heart.
What little I've read on the current conflict, it seems that Israel played right into Hamas' hands on this one. Hamas kidnaps and murders 3 Jewish kids. Israel responds by rounding up hundreds of Palestinian suspects...Hamas uses it as an excuse to shoot missiles at Israel and provoke Israel into responding over the top and becoming the bad guy....
A quieter response to the initial murders might have been warranted in this case.
I'm specifically referring to this from the Reuters article:
"The surge in violence along the Gaza border, which is the worst since an eight-day war in 2012 when Tel Aviv was also targeted, followed a chain of events that began with the abduction of three Jewish seminary students in the occupied West Bank on June 12.
Blaming Hamas, which neither confirmed nor denied a role, the Israelis arrested hundreds of its activists in their search for the teenagers who were eventually found dead, as was a Palestinian youth abducted in Jerusalem last Wednesday in a suspected revenge murder.
Palestinians have since launched more than 200 rockets from Gaza, Israel has said.
While threatening an "earthquake" of escalation against Israel, Hamas said it could restore calm if Israel halted the Gaza offensive, once again committed to a 2012 Egyptian-brokered truce and freed prisoners it detained in the West Bank last month."
Israel has never relied on principles of good diplomacy where it's national security is concerned. When it is threatened with imminent attack, or is attacked outright, it's response must be rapid and overwhelming. It is one small patch of land surrounded by a sea of enemies who want to see her utterly destroyed. In this regard, Israel's security situation is completely unique in the world. If she hesitates or waivers, all may be lost.
Time and time again the Arabs have proven to the world that they are deceitful, completely unreliable and dedicated to the eradication of all Jews in the state of Israel. They will lie, cheat and murder their way towards this objective.
Historically, Israel had the world's sympathy. But now that memories of the holocaust are fading, it's becoming posh to openly hate Jews again. Supporting Palestine as an oppressed underdog is all the rage. Israel has lost the support of the media, and this I fear may prove a deadlier blow than any attack Hamas could pull off. Why the west lets itself get taken advantage of by terrorists, I will never understand.

its the ÜberPoliticalCorrectness gone wrong, which had crept into any aspect of day to day life also
you cant call a spade a spade anymore ...well, that my hurt the feelings of the spade being called a spade, Its insane!
so today the life of a killed enemy or a bystanding supporters from his numerous clan -or child that he abused as a human shield- has finally gotten the same value (or even higher in some media) then that of your very own service members or citizens
it seems like only way to win a "war" now would be if DAPRA develops a 'area stun bomb' which let a whole quarter fell into a healthy deep sleep like in a Grimm's Fairy Tale , while the 'soldier' stroll in ...defuse any explosives and collect any AK , lay a stuffed toy instead in anybody arms ...and leave the area before the enemy flooded quarter awakes ... and then those will still complain to the media, about the 'mild headache' one of a million got from the unwanted narcosis!

Those suspects were convicted terrorists previously released in exchange for the kidnapped Gilad Shalit, who have broken the terms of their release (returned to terrorism).
And they began launching rocket barrages straight away at our cities.
Plus the cities in the south have been undergoing these barrages for the past straight ~14 years now.
As for the number of rockets, they've long passed 200.
And we can't really do much.
There second we actually try to do anything real, good ol' uncle Obama will quickly call in to say we're making too much of a ruckus and we should just sit down quietly. :P
There are so many things I want to type here in a Jewish rage but none are really productive or add.to the conversation.
FWIW...as an amateur historian (I quit my M.A. and Ph.D. route when a girl got in the way) I often pride myself in being able to see more than one side to an argument. With regards to the on-going struggles between the Palestinians and the Israelis, I confess failure. If the Palestinians could put even 1/10th of the energy they spend on hatred into building up their communities, educating their children, encouraging imagination instead of hatred, investing in legitimate businesses and economic growth, and rooting out religious extremism, they could be successful, prosperous and peaceful. I simply cannot fathom a mindset that has so thoroughly abandoned itself to hatred and spite.
The ironic thing about this is that very often, the Palestinians that I have meet in the "diaspora" are educated, congenial and kind. Of course, that's why I've met them in N. America...because they were obviously sensible enough to get the f**k out of Dodge.

Well, as you can see that information wasn't in the Reuters article.

Rocket fire out of the Lebanon reported
QuoteRocket fire from Lebanon hit northern Israel Friday, a move that has led Israeli officials to suspect Lebanese militants may be joining the four-day conflict between Israel and Gaza militants.
The Lebanese military said three rockets were fired toward Israel around 6 a.m. and the Israelis retaliated by firing about 25 artillery shells on the area. Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner confirmed that the Israeli military had responded to the new attack with force.
Lebanese troops and United Nations peacekeepers later began searching the area, and the military said it was trying to find out who was behind the attack.
Lerner said Israel has suspected that Lebanese militants may try to join the fray as Israel exchanges fire with Islamic Hamas militants in Gaza. However, he said it was still unclear whether Friday's attack was "symbolic or something more substantial."
Southern Lebanon is a stronghold of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, which has battled Israel numerous times. However, recent fire from Lebanon has been blamed on radical Palestinian factions in the area and Hezbollah has not been involved in the ongoing offensive. It has largely refrained from engaging Israel since a monthlong war in 2006 when it fired thousands of rockets into Israel and was pummeled by Israeli airstrikes in response.

Israel's Netanyahu: World Pressure Won't Stop Gaza Offensive
Israel's prime minister says he will not cave in to international pressure to stop a military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Benjamin Netanyahu told a news conference Friday that Israel has already struck 1,000 targets in Gaza and will continue its offensive until rocket fire out of Gaza is halted. "No international pressure will prevent us from acting with all power," he said.
However, the United Nations human rights chief voiced serious doubts that the operation complied with international law. "We have received deeply disturbing reports that many of the civilian casualties, including of children, occurred as a result of strikes on homes. Such reports raise serious doubt about whether the Israeli strikes have been in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said in a statement. Netanyahu said Israel is using twice the force it used during a similar offensive in 2012. More than 100 Palestinians have been killed.
This is an article that gives the entire picture of Netanyahu's actual statement...

Quote
JERAUSALEM - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke yesterday evening (Jul. 9) with several world leaders, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Secretary of State John Kerry regarding Operation 'Protective Edge' and its implications. Prime Minister Netanyahu said in his conversations that no country in the world would agree to suffer relentless missile attacks and infiltration attempts by sea and via terror tunnels. Hamas is perpetrating a double war crime by deliberately trying to attack Israeli civilians while using the civilian population in Gaza as human shields, Netanyahu told them. Netanyahu placed the blame for civilian casualties in Gaza on Hamas.
Prime Minister Netanyahu added that Hamas is known throughout the world as a terrorist organization and said that the international community must strongly condemn the continual firing by Hamas and the other terrorist organizations at Israeli cities.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to convene later today to discuss the situation in Israel.
Netanyahu reported that his conversations were effective: "Today I spoke with several world leaders. I appreciated their expressions of strong support for our right and our duty to defend ourselves, and this is what we will continue to do."
Netanyahu will speak with additional world leaders in the coming days. PM Netanyahu has further issued a statement to the international community, stating: "Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza are firing rockets on cities throughout the State of Israel – on Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beer Sheba, Sderot and other cities in Israel. No country on earth would remain passive in the face of hundreds of rockets fired on its cities and Israel is no exception."
"Today we expanded our operations against Hamas and the other terrorist groups in Gaza. We will continue to protect our civilians against Hamas attacks on them. Hamas, by contrast, is deliberately putting Palestinian civilians into harm's way. It embeds its terrorists in hospitals, schools, mosques and apartment buildings throughout the Gaza Strip. Hamas is thus committing a double war crime: It targets Israeli civilians, while hiding behind Palestinian civilians. This operation could take time. We are resolved to defend our families and our homes."
Hamas also threatened to attack Israeli airports tonight.
.
i wonder how they are able to smuggle thousands of longer range rockets into Gaza?
Isarel should go in in the south of the strip , annex a 1 click wide stretch along thee Egyptian border, resettle the inhabitants, flatten it ...and dig a deep trench almost a channel , microfarture the base rock with large explosions where its necessary and connected the pool to the sea (that should render tunnels impossible to dig for anybody without the latest Swiss tunnel drilling machine right from the Gotthard mountain range) ... yes, there will be lamentation in the UNO councils but any resolution get blocked by USA veto (or i hope so?), and that's it.
Every Iron Dome rocket is 50 000 bucks spend ...the Gaza Pool project is cheaper in the longrun
Fixed that for you. :)

It's not their fault the Hamas decides to use them as human shields.
As far as the Hamas is concerned either they get noticed by the IDF and cause the strikes against the attacking terrorists to be aborted,
allowing the terrorists to murder and kill innocents, or they don't, where upon they can whine to the world it's our fault and have us punished and forced into more
one-sided cease-fires.
.. i would not be surprised if the children in question were sacrificed by some extra miltant Hamas group (probably also in an age old quarrels with the very clan those children belonged to and of course not of their clan) just dropped a mortarshell on the beach to get another Pallywood drama for the media.
(Hams use mortars to shell Isarel, so its not to hard to swing one around to allocate a different probably pre allocated spot on the beach)
well Hamas cant dismantle their tunnels, and may also cant evacuated heavy engine lathe and such from weapon constructions shops,
but how many rockets can be carried away in parts by 'refugees fleeing as asked' rolled in an old rug in a 5h ceasefire?
...in the meantime ceasefire is broken by Hamas rockets after only 2h
Tpek , better rethink the Uzi, better a MP5 if you want to use that calibre, or best am HK MP7 with Hartkerngeschoss ammunition (against vests)
its not a guarantee that all Hamas raiders get caught so fine when infiltrating by tunnel under the border
http://t.co/RPkuLkZqE9
Actually during the 2 hour period they fired "only" 40 rocket barrages over our cities.
I'm not sure how up-to-date you are, but due to the Hamas' tactics of building tunnels all around the Gaza strip and well into Israel,
and after having foiled and ambushed several Hamas squads that came from such tunnels into Israeli towns and cities, the IDF went into a ground operation not so long ago,
With some heavy fighting in both the Gaza strip and Israel itself.
Sadly, ground battles do not afford the luxurious "safety" of striking from the air or more fortified positions and requires chasing the enemy forces back into their own strongholds,
which leads to an increasing casualty rate.
And of course in the meanwhile, the Hamas leaders are comfortably enjoying the hospitality of Turkey and Qatar that provide them with sanctuary, a base of operations and plenty of money and supplies.
Yeah, I heard on the morning news here that there had been a actual stand up fight in which both sides took some casualties. Rumours of an Israeli soldier being captured as well but so far no proof.
Keep safe Tpek. I hope it all ends soon because Israel and it's people really are wonderful to visit.

QuoteApologists for Hamas attribute the blood lust to the Israeli occupation and blockade. Occupation? Does no one remember anything? It was less than 10 years ago that worldwide television showed the Israeli army pulling die-hard settlers off synagogue roofs in Gaza as Israel uprooted its settlements, expelled its citizens, withdrew its military and turned every inch of Gaza over to the Palestinians. There was not a soldier, not a settler, not a single Israeli left in Gaza.
And there was no blockade. On the contrary. Israel wanted this new Palestinian state to succeed. To help the Gaza economy, Israel gave the Palestinians its 3,000 greenhouses that had produced fruit and flowers for export. It opened border crossings and encouraged commerce.
The whole idea was to establish the model for two states living peacefully and productively side by side. No one seems to remember that, simultaneous with the Gaza withdrawal, Israel dismantled four smaller settlements in the northern West Bank as a clear signal of Israel's desire to leave the West Bank as well and thus achieve an amicable two-state solution.
This is not ancient history. This was nine years ago.
And how did the Gaza Palestinians react to being granted by the Israelis what no previous ruler, neither Egyptian, nor British, nor Turkish, had ever given them — an independent territory? First, they demolished the greenhouses. Then they elected Hamas. Then, instead of building a state with its attendant political and economic institutions, they spent the better part of a decade turning Gaza into a massive military base, brimming with terror weapons, to make ceaseless war on Israel.
Where are the roads and rail, the industry and infrastructure of the new Palestinian state? Nowhere. Instead, they built mile upon mile of underground tunnels to hide their weapons and, when the going gets tough, their military commanders. They spent millions importing and producing rockets, launchers, mortars, small arms, even drones. They deliberately placed them in schools, hospitals, mosques and private homes to better expose their own civilians. (Just Thursday, the U.N. announced that it found 20 rockets in a Gaza school.) And from which they fire rockets at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Mind you, there seems to be a rather large number of Israeli soldiers (among the casualties&wounded) who immigrated here not so long ago from the U.S.
Many young men who moved here without their family.
Guys originally from L.A, Texas and what not.
I wonder what good ol' Obama and his administration got to say about it.

LOL!
So, admittedly, I made the mistake of looking an article with pictures about protests around the world condemning Israel's actions. While the protests didn't surprise me, even the large number in the US, the signs I was reading were making sick/angry all in the same instance. The ignorance, hate and just plain hypocrisy of those signs was making my blood boil. After seeing the third or forth bunch Israel = Nazi or KKK signs I just couldn't look at the pictures anymore. >:( >:( >:( :tickedoff:

I agree but I was also seeing these ignorant signs in pictures from protests in Europe and in the US which made me even that much more outraged.
Oh my yes. It's not just limited to the Middle East of course. It's enraging no matter where I see it.
It's enraging, period, for anyone to have to sit there and take it without being able to fight back, and being considered worse than Hitler if you DO fight back to protect yourself.
Makes me think of growing up. Had a bully messed with me and pushed me to my breaking point, punching his ass out put an end to it. I'd get in trouble at school but only briefly and the guy would never mess with me again. Today, you fight back and the media makes you out to be worse than Hitler, so the bullies are encouraged to step up their BS and we're encouraged to keep our mouths shut and not do anything but take it.
Will this ever reach a breaking point, or will it just get worse and worse until history starts making the Allies out to be the bad guys in World War II for not being tolerant or inclusive of Germany's lebenstraum?
So we've just entered into another 1-sided cease-fire (we do nothing while they butcher us) for the 6th time (since the operation started) today/yesterday, thanks to Obama.
This is beyond ridiculous.
Hamas is obviously the one to be enjoying it, and Obama wants the 11 Billion Qatar (Hamas's allies) promised him,
but what the heck is wrong with our government that they've already agreed to such idiocy 6 times already?! :uglystupid2: :tickedoff:

No, a child might be persistent/obnoxious and try the mother's patience.
Our government simply keeps giving in to idiotic "cease fire" agreements that are immediately broken by Hamas who fires at us while our government ponders for a long time
how much to take before we should get back to fighting.
The fact that it behaves as if Hamas would ever actually abide by any agreement even after being hit directly in the face with reality is a testament to its stupidity.
its also forced to deal with the worlds diplomatic opinion to some degree. from where I sit it has to and it sucks.
I have to wonder if this is a prelude to the expected attack on Iran?
Israel must have learned from history: never fight a war on two fronts. Take out Hamas in Gaza now. Hit Iran. Deal with Hizbollah in the north later.
Ye gods, it just doesn't end. The news this morning was STILL spinning Israel defending itself as if it is some kind of terrible aggressor and completely ignoring why it was doing this in the first place. I'm actually surprised they mentioned the Israeli Iron Dome system too because they had to say it was being used to counter Hamas rocket attacks. But they managed to make it sound like it was innocuous as hell. Jackasses.
Nothing to add; just registering for comment tracking. :-[
That's it folks.
We're done.
The government decided to leave and supposedly reserve the right to retaliate against the attacks and deal with the Terror-tunnels...
Except the genii at our governments must have forgotten the 2nd (and most important) part of attacking back. :buck2:
So we're leaving and they're still shooting and sending countless squads of terrorists to infiltrate and butcher people in our cities&towns.

During which we got attacked more. After which we were internationally condemned.
And then attacked some more (just less than an hour ago the Palestinians managed another successful attack - murdering more innocent civilians).

Hamas executed workers who helped create the tunnels.
QuoteAfter the tunnels were completed, dozens were reportedly executed to prevent intelligence leaks to Israel.
"Anyone they suspected might transfer information to Israel on the tunnels was killed by the military wing," a different source said. "They were very cruel."
In 2012, a Journal of Palestine Studies article claimed 160 Palestinian children were killed while working on Hamas's tunnel system.

Some people have no manners.
Hope you and yours are OK.
At least the Iron Dome appears to have made Hamas' rocket attacks largely a waste of effort on their part. :)
You'd think that the disproportionate civilian losses in Gaza compared to Israel (what is it now, a couple of thousand compared to a handful? - not that I think any non-combatant death is justified) would illustrate the futility of the rocket bombardment policy to Hamas' leadership.
By the same token the degree of destruction wrought on Gaza in retaliation as shown to the world on our TV screens makes Israel a great recruiting sergeant for the likes of Hamas, and other terror groups. Israel's detractors can point to the destruction and say "look at what Israel is doing". They conveniently omit to mention the hundreds of rockets fired on Israel - but the scale of death and destruction is not comparable, so the media, and public opinion isn't inflamed towards Hamas in the same way. Compare the media reaction towards ISIL and their murderous progress. Like it or not a comparison is being made, although the barbarism of ISIL is significantly more abhorrent, Israel is portrayed as a fairly unrestrained bad guy. Even Assads war in Syria doesn't make the news any more. They can make highly emotive analogies and say "it's like the Nazi's destroying Warsaw", they can point to the occupied territories and say "the colonisation of these areas is akin to the Nazi policy of Lebensraum"... The door is open to outrageous comment because at least enough "evidence" is in the public domain to argue that Israel is just as bad, if not worse than Hamas towards non-Jewish civilian populations.
Now, Israel is not a "Nazi" state, but a very civilised one, but you can see how detractors can, and have, pointed to what is being shown on TV screens and make a case against Israel. Killing large numbers of civilians, whether deliberately or not, is not the answer, as it plays into the propaganda for Hamas. It's hard to see that it is avoidable in such a densely populated area, but the question of the deliberate killing of civilians does arise, even if it is incidental collateral damage. I know Hamas use human shields - but Israel is playing into their hands with the apparently disproportionate killing of non-combatants to Hamas fighters. Incidents like the shelling of hospitals, killing young boys on the beach, or deliberately targeting an unarmed man looking for his family, whilst they may be isolated, can also be argued rightly or wrongly (depending on where you sit on the argument) as a genocidal state policy.
I think what is needed is much more financial support from the West for Israel, with an emphasis on keeping the Iron Dome shield strong to protect Israeli cities, and negate (largely anyway) the Hamas rocket strikes, otherwise we'd be seeing Tel Aviv looking like Gaza. In the meantime, this apparently general bombardment of Gaza needs to stop. By nullifying the bombardment cycle, the hysteria will decline.
Israel and the West need to go after the funding sources for the likes of Hamas to limit their operations, to starve the serpent. Israel also needs to work against the public perception (certainly in Europe - if not elsewhere) that Israel operates an quasi apartheid state, which incites Arabs to blame Israel as being behind every single bad thing that happens in the Middle East. Whilst Israel can do little to change the attitudes of the more fanatical people in Hamas and the like who want to see the destruction of Israel, they can marginalise them politically, and then deal with them as the hateful organisation they are.
If all Israel has to offer Arabs is suffering then what options do they have if they feel they have nothing left to lose? Hard as it is for Israelis to do, positive, peaceful, inclusive dialogue is the only way forward if Israel wants lasting peace, and you can only do that if you have a moderate core of people left to deal with to promote the idea amongst the Arabs. I find it hard to believe that everyone in Gaza is pro Hamas, but with murderous oppression towards detractors by Hamas, and little positive experience of Israel who will your average Gazan see as their best ally?
Maybe not a popular view, but my $0.02. I'd love to see peace for both Israelis and the Palestinians in my lifetime. Am I hoping too much?
@Tpek :) and Shlomz :) Stay safe. You guys - and your families are in my thoughts. O0

For Hamas, the loss of a thousand is a drop in the bucket. Population growth has been a cornerstone of their strategy for years.

However unchecked population growth is overwhelming the Gaza underground aquifer. Too much water is extracted from drinking wells and crop irrigation. Without enough natural recharge, this leads to polluted water, salt water incursion, and eventually parts of the Gaza aquifer collapse from over pumping.
http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/2414449/water_in_gaza_total_collapse_draws_ever_nearer.html
For now, Gaza is living on borrowed time importing water from Israel and setting up local desalination projects built using foreign funds. However these are stopgap measures at best. In any future conflict, Israel can simply turn off the tap and discontinue fuel shipments though when the residents of Gaza misbehave. Pretty tough to sustain that kind of population in the desert without access to clean water.
Long term, the same thing will happen in the West Bank once the Dead Sea dries up.

I don't get the impression Hamas give a fig about human life so long as they achieve their aims. >:( However, you make a really insightful comment about resources, overpopulation, and social attitudes in Gaza. There is a reason China has it's one child policy - they've seen the problem of overpopulation, and opened their eyes to it. For the individual it's not a nice policy, but for the country it's extremely sensible. Gaza, India, Pakistan, Indonesia could all do with opening their eyes to this, and looking at the improvements to quality of life if they have the discipline to recognise the problem. Good post! O0

Careful, your toe is starting to slip over the line. Go any farther and people are going to start suggesting that you be the first to kill yourself since you're so concerned about human population levels. Human rights to do whatever the hell we want, including the right to breed our way into a planetary sized toilet, always trump our rights to have a universally high quality of life, and the rights of countless other species to even survive.

If she is then, perhaps it's overstating it a bit, as pick and choose about their policies. I have a friend from Shanghai, who was made to undergo sterilisation after her first child (a very clever girl who's now doing her Phd in Biochemistry O0), and it caused my friend a lot of angst, as she'd love to have had another baby. I can't help feeling empathic toward her situation, but at the same time I can see the big picture of over-population that can be devastating, especially in a place like China. China has no shortage of people, but limited resources to feed them, and has experience of the real problems that brings to their people.
