I could never get the hang of the controls in Gunship which was odd since I had no trouble with the Jane's Longbow sims and Enemy Engaged sims.

For me, not just Gunship. I could never get the hang of the controls in any helicopter game.

One of my first and most beloved sims, and I was actually good at it. But I wonder if I could play it happily now...it must look really dated.

Edit: actually its much newer than the version I first played back in 1986. Looks pretty good. In scrren shots anyway.

Besides graphically I wonder how different the newer version is...played the old version a ton and loved it!  $7 doesn't seem like much to try.

This looks to be Gunship! from 2000 as opposed to Gunship (1986) and Gunship 2000 (1991). What difference an exclamation mark makes!! Even so I am not to sure how well the graphics will hold up in 2014.

I recall playing this and having some fun with it, but some of the missions were very "puzzle like" - meaning, you had to find the one place on the map where you could do pop-up attacks, and if you didn't kill off all enemy assets in a particular order, you were screwed.  I had much more fun with Gunship 2000.

Mine, too!  The career mode was one of the best ever made.  I recall one mission where we were sent out to shoot up a WP tank column.  I took a hit from something and the helo went into a spin.  I managed to keep control and land on the side of a hill.  But the hill was too steep so we started sliding down the side.   :D  We slid all the way down before we could escape the totally wrecked craft.  IIRC, I made it back to friendly lines without being captured.

Such great memories....

For whatever reason my favorite missions were in the desert, and night missions. Sometimes I would play with a friend and we would coop, one of use would pilot and the other would be gunner.

Desert missions were fun.  WP/NATO was my favorite, but I also loved the Vietnam setting.  That had some great stuff, too.

I'm with you on that one - Gunship (1986) was one of my go-to games along with F-15 Strike Eagle. I wasn't very good at Gunship, but that didn't stop me from trying.

I'd be much more excited if this was Gunship 2000. Now THAT was an outstanding sim.

Interestingly, Steam has been releasing old school sims lately.  I noticed not too long ago, they added Eurofighter Typhoon to their catalog.

Yikes, played around with the demo a little bit...does seem dated...

1)  The demo actually doesn't install, just a single file you have to run.
2)  Worked with my xbox controller, very surprised with that
3)  Graphics, really hard to make out certain things....

That was enough to pack it up for me:)

Might be just my settings, but a second helicopter appeared and had no idea it was a helicopter, look like a blotch of some sort.  Can't argue not any worse than f117, but didn't end up playing that very long either...maybe if this was the original version I would give more of a chance.  I am sure I could get $7 of fun out of it.  I get wrapped up in nostalgia just to relive history for a little bit, especially for cheap price.

So I do have to take some of my initial impressions away....didn't realize there was a configuration screen where I could select higher graphics and 1920x1080 screen resolution...after that, better graphics...not great, but I could see things much better now.....remember, this is from a demo version from long ago, have no idea if the same as this released version.

Loved this sim when it was new. About the only helicopter sim I've ever done well with. Microprose was my "go to" gaming company back then.

And that's the reason I'm going to give this one a pass. Even if this version is good, the combination of aging graphics and my aging reflexes sound to me like a recipe for ruining good memories!

hhmm...just had a nice attack run...killed three tanks with hellfire missiles....usually in these games I don't hit a darn thing:)  One thing for sure, it is a lot easier to control than most sims I have played, probably leans more towards simplified controls compared to hardcore, which may not be that bad for some people.  The demo does not give you much to try besides a single mission and the ability to fly around....but I did find it very easy to control the helicopter, likely because not real life controls.  What has surprised me is the fact for a 2000 game, my xbox gamepad works fine and default out of the box.  You can't do everything from the gamepad, so some keyboard action still required.  The game has a campaign mode, but locked in the demo so don't know how it works yet.

It is likely one of those games to kill some time with....I was probably a little harsh earlier, still likely not like the old game, but if your looking for a simplistic helicopter game, you might like it....try the demo a few threads up first...you don't even have to install...just unzip and click the game file.

Looks great for a game this old, but crashes at any normal resolution when I try to bring up the in game map or play the tutorial missions.

No in game map is kind of a deal breaker

Played around with it for awhile in the demo....not as bad as I thought it would be....but will save buying it for another rainy day.  I really do like how you can assign yourself to either the pilot or gunner or pilot+gunner....I usually suck at controlling aircraft, so it was kind of nice just to see in gunners seat and command things and target/fire.  Also, although way too early to talk about AI, the auto pilots seemed to do a decent job....they would hug the earth and navigate between trees, then pop up to attack the enemy.

I would also like to see M1 since I did not get a chance to play the original....

It has to do with the resolution your at......if you change it to a resolution like 1280x1024x32, it will work fine.....other resolutions, not so much.  I tried this in the demo and it worked.  If I changed to 1920x1080, it crashed.  Other resolutions might work too, you will have to fool around.

I had that game.  But it was a "broken" game.
This project was supposed to be able to play together with the planned M1 Tank Platoon 3 which never materialized (sort of like DCS world).
I believe this had a short shelf life (a lot of people don't know this game existed).  One of the last games of Micropose before they folded.
Development and patching for Gunship wasn't finished. That's why I call it "broken".

Honestly I think Steam counts on us to rely on emotional nostalgia when they offer these games, even for 7.00. Logic would say that we wouldn't touch them this many years later.

I think it's a simple business decision, If this game weren't available through a legit online service and I really wanted it, I might going looking for it through other sources. If I can add it to my Steam library for a reasonable price and be assured that it will play on my current system, I'm less likely to bother looking elsewhere.

Then link them together to make one awesome combined arms game

IIRC, the naval wargame Task force 1942 and the flight sim Pacific Strike linked together so you could sail your flattops into harms way in the former and then launch a strike which you could fly yourself in the latter. Too bad Pacific Strike was buggy and looked like crap due to the low resolution.  :(

EDIT: I was wrong about the actual sim- it was 1942 Pacific Air War, and it didn't link to TF1942, it was actually built over a version of it, with the naval aspect allowing you to control ships and then automatically firing up the flight sim when you wanted to fly along on an air mission.

This game is pretty damn hard. My gunner never picks up AAA, and I get shot out of the sky with ease.

In fact, the gunnery is horrible overall and seems to miss a lot of targets.

In my experience, old games peddled on Steam are almost always fraught with issues, and Steam isn't really set up to support these games. Perhaps GOG are, because they work exclusively with making old games playable and supportable on new platforms. Steam isn't. So after being burned with a few titles, I'm always wary of taking on old games on Steam.

Just curious when you say the gunner can't pick up anything and misses targets, is there a mode in the full release where you just pilot the helicopter and the gunner handles all gunnery duty?  In the demo, it didn't appear to have that mode so wasn't sure what you meant.  When I pilot the helicopter it seemed I was also responsible for shooting.  However it did appear the gunner tried to identify targets for me but seemed I could still cycle through the targets and get lock.  Using the missiles, I was able to hit all the targets but when it came to using the machine gun, it was a lot harder to hit.

When I flew, there was also another helicopter assigned to my flight which was under AI control.  It seemed pretty competent in taking out targets on its own and in fact, it often picked up targets before I could even find them.  I also noticed it used the counter measures quite a bit to help not get shot down and really hugged the earth/trees to present a minimal profile to the enemy.

Also the game appears to have many different difficulty settings, I wonder if any of what you saw was based on the setting.  Again, my observations was purely based on the demo so it can be completely different in the demo.

I am probably over thinking a $7 game:)

You can switch between Gunner and Pilot cockpit.
I think it was planned to have network play where one player is gunner and another is pilot.

Yep, that is in the demo...but when I switch to pilot, the gunner did not automatically fire on targets without me ordering it.

Sometimes the gunner will engage targets on his own. I have no idea how to toggle that.

In any case, the gunner is freaking horrible at identifying targets. Even when a target appears on the FCS, it is very difficult to get the gunner to lock onto that target. The 'next target' and 'previous target' buttons don't seem to work as intended, and the 'line of site' button (suppose to lock onto a target within the pilots line of site) doesn't work either.

This results in me being shot out of the sky by AAA - very difficult since my gunner seems to target whatever he wants.

Also - extremely annoying, but my gunner won't identify full units. The gunner will identify 1 out of 3 tanks in a tank platoon. I can see the contact on my FCS, but for whatever reason the gunner will not lock onto the targets.

Maybe on 'Recruit' difficulty level the gunner is the actual recruit in question...  :D

That's too bad....I guess that is why it is only $7 :)  I actually liked how easy it was to fly, but if the gunner is not reasonable, you don't stand a chance.

I haven't tried MP yet. Let me know if you pick it up, we can give it a go.

And yes, the flying part is actually really easy, especially compared to EECH.

Bird will come to a hover (and stay!) very nicely.

Yeah, was easy to take off, was easy to hover and generally easy to hug the terrain and popup.....not sure if realistic or not, but it was easy and I liked the feel:)

I will let you know if I get it, right now eyeing a different purchase which will likely make me wait for a bit on this one, especially if the supporting AI is not that great.

I could never get the hang of the controls in Gunship which was odd since I had no trouble with the Jane's Longbow sims and Enemy Engaged sims.

Same.  This version was the only helo sim I found a real pain in the ass to fly.  I suppose DCS Black Shark would be the same, but that's only tied into learning how to use the weird Russkie trim; the controls are just fine.

I still have EECH installed with the MegaMod, if I ever feel the need for an old-fashioned helo sim (with much more content).

I really miss the Microprose level of simulations these days.  They were simulator enough to scratch the itch without going over the top.  The replay value with random campaigns and missions were second to none.  I just can't get into the modern simulators because the learning curve exceeds my time available for gaming.  In the Microprose days, I could throw on a keyboard template and be flying in an hour or so.  I miss managing pilots and building squadron loadouts.  I load up DCS and stare at it for fifteen minutes before I end up doing something else.

Microprose is one of my favorite computer game companies of all time. Keyboard templates were awesome! I was also 15 and a much quicker learner than now at 40.

Awww come on man, jump into an M1a2 and rip apart some t-72s.  I've had some great white knuckle by the seat of your pants action with sb pro.  Like you and your platoon of m1s trying to hold off a soviet armored battalion.

I loved that one.  Long ago, in the far far away.

I'd really like to play the latest Steel Beasts stuff, but there's no way I'm signing up for that DRM scheme.   >:(

The dingle isn't much of a problem. It's similar to having a DVD in drive.

It's called a dongle...not a dingle.

Anyway, I would think all the DRM haters would prefer this over other forms of licensing and DRM. They just need to accept the idea that this isn't a perfect world and that the digital gaming industry requires some form of digital rights management.

My thoughts exactly, a physical drm dongle is a hell of a lot better than some intrusive software running in the background like those days with starforce.  Don't let something like a USB dongle stop you from playing the best armor sim on the market.

I just can't get past the dongle.

Perhaps because I've lost at least one USB thumb drive (off my keychain no less) and have had two of them die on me over the years.  What does it cost?  Like $80 for one?  I would fully expect something bad to happen to it.  Not even considering the high price for a sim that only has one-off scenarios.  I dunno.. just not convinced that the Pros outweigh the Cons for me at that price.

^It took me awhile to accept the dongle idea too, and it is one of the few things that I make sure I keep an eye on every time I move or relocate.  I think they will replace the dongle for $10 if it breaks or you lose it though.

The thing with sb pro in sp is that there is no dedicated campaign / career mode which seems to be a deal breaker for many folks.  In spite of that, there is a ton of content for sp people.  The key for me is the editor, you can open any mission that isn't pass worded ( which is 90% of most missions) and adjust it to your liking in just a few clicks.
Hands down it has one of the most versatile editors, when the M1a2 was finally releases, I went back and swapped out all my favorite sp scenarios with m1a2 and spent hours of game play just trying out all the upgraded features of the a2.
My preference is to play m1a2s with an all sabot round load out, very deadly combo, I'm worthless shooting with heat rounds.
If you want to, you can play the game from the map mode like a strategy game, then jump in to vehicles at key moments.  This is how I play large scenarios in sp that are meant for mp, span of control gets tested but lots of action no doubt.

There is a new operation mode that has a series of branching scenarios sort of like the cm campaign system, but there is only a 1973 Sinai scenario for it.  I think this May be esim's effort to add more of a campaign system in the future.

Me too...took me awhile to jump in because I had reservations of the dongle, but ever since I have gotten it, I don't even think about it anymore.  The day I got it I plugged in the back of my PC and hasn't moved since.  I am pretty sure they do have the replacement program like you stated, so I am not too worried about it.  Not saying I love the dongle method, but I would take it over the other DRM that ties to your specific hardware and requires new activations as things changed.  Although I don't really ever want it to become the norm since if every game had it, management of the dongles would become a nightmare.

Well it's not a game but a simulation.  Just like FSX and X-Plane there are no campaigns.  No story.

Since they charge for larger updates, I also may as well wait until they get more features in that I want before purchasing.

At that price, I don't want to go in twice.  If I ever decide to do so.

Fatal flaw with the design of campaign mode: No continuity for units, losses or map damage

The campaign system is literally a way for eSim to link single missions together. Not really a true campaign.

Also, for whatever reason, the community hadn't been drawn to create new content for campaigns so we're stuck with the stock campaign and nothing else.
