Did they make lots of those point-and-click adventure games or am I confusing them with someone else?

Yes they did. Police Quest, Space Quest, Heroes Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, etc.
They did shooters like Swat (Police Quest spin off).
And the well-loved wargame Civil War Generals!
Don't forget Front Page Sports Football and my personal favorite Trophy Bass 2. I spent a ton of hours drinking beer and virtually fishing.
They were at the top of my gaming list along time ago. Played all the Hero's Quest[which changed to Quest for Glory] and King's quest games. Hell they dominated the shelf space back then.
Did they not also do Red Storm Rising? Could be wrong...

That was MicroProse, of course. ;)
Sierra had stuff like
Lords Of Magic and some other fantasy RPG type stuff. The SWAT games. I don't think they did a lot of sims or wargames, although I do vaguely recall they had a smattering of flight sims long ago.
I'll have to look when I get home but I'm pretty sure Sierra had a subdivision called Dynamix that did the "Aces" series of flight sims which were pretty doggone good for the times.

Yes. I remember the old Mosquito game from Dynamix. Way way back.
I always think of Lords of Magic and Lords of the Realm 2 in association with Sierra.
Here's hoping it's a true revival, and not a terrible, dark necromancer simply raising a zombie to spit out games for smartphones.
here's a wiki list .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sierra_Entertainment_video_games
It's just a name at this point, isn't it? I don't think they're going to round up the old gang or anything so I suspect it's more just banking on nostalgia than anything.

I think that goes without saying.
However, if Activision wishes to truly capitalize on that nostalgia, they're going to have to allow Sierra to produce the types of games that they used to. Otherwise, this is going to backfire on them big-time, and turn into nothing more than an empty/meaningless ploy.
Wow. First SSI coming back from the dead, now Sierra.
Makes me hope for a holy trinity with Microprose waking up from a long slumber and joining their ranks...lol.

Much like ripping off a band-aid quickly, I'm gonna shoot down that hope right now so as to keep the pain to a minimum.
Microprose was revived -- technically -- but these (http://microprose.com/all-games/) are the kinds of games they make now. :( The Microprose we knew and loved is gone for good, and what's now in its place isn't even a mockery; it's a complete stranger wearing a dead man's clothes.

Abomination!
Barf
My boxed version of World in Conflict was published by Sierra. Now owned by Ubisoft who wanted to acquire the devs Massive Entertainment.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroProse) in the
Brand name for Interactive Game Group section mentions "....As of 2012, the name is used by a video game studio Microprose (with no capital "P" in the name)...." So there is at least that minor distinction between the late and great Micro
Prose and its recent wannabe Microprose.
(Sadly the only clip of this bit I could find on Youtube)
Hahah!
I did enjoy the original
Pet Sematary back in the day. O0
