Wastelands has "decided to launch Early Access on September 11th. We've prepared a video to announce that fact. You can take a look at it here:"
Quote from: Wastelands InteractiveSo, what's Early Access going to include? I'll tell you! You'll have access to:
Six Pre-made Sorcerer Lords (or customize one from scratch)
Four Playable Races ( High Men, Grey Elves, Draconians, and the Unhallowed)
Three Planes of Existence (Prime Material, Air, and Shadow)
Two-hundred Spells
A limited number of roaming creatures
The artifact crafting system
We're also going to have most of the major game mechanics in place (heroes will follow shortly after early access). The game is beginning to feel the way it should and from Early Access on it's going to be about tweaking numbers and polishing things up. We'll be adjusting the pace and adding the ability to turn features on and off and a number of other things.
Another large portion of the "post Early Access" work is going to be dedicated to refining the AI. It's taking shape day by day, but as you can imagine, it's a fairly large task. We want WoM to include and AI that's both challenging and fun to play against. That's a tall order for a game this complex, but we're doing our best and intend to keep working on it until we get it right!
Enjoy!
Edit: Video Link updated.
Good news!!
I have so far passed up on AoW3 because my multiplayer partner is hesitant to get a game so heavily invested in combat while the other aspects of the game are weak. My hope is that Wasteland sticks to MoM formula and we can finally get a game we can sink our teeth into. It really looks like it is coming together nicely.

Not if it works the same way as AoW3!
maybe the video will tell us.............. :P
they just made some tweaks and posted a new video

OK guys, we've made some minor changes to the video and posted the updated version on Youtube.
Thanks Steve! That looks very sexy, doesn't it?
very nice - you need to resurrect the hamster to power your graphics card
september 11th???? whos going to pay the bills in my house and do my job with this and Elite, and Fallen Enchantress, and Endless Legend and AOW III?
Thanks, Steve.
I updated the video link in my initial post in this thread.
Greybriar, are you a Kickstarter backer as well? I just got the email updates (including the link to the new video) this morning.
In any case, it's still looking good to me. Between this, Fallen Enchantress, AoW3, and Sovereignty, I'd say my fantasy-strategy gaming needs will have been more than met for the foreseeable future. :)
Yes, Martok, I am a Worlds of Magic Kickstarter backer. As a matter of fact, I backed both Worlds of Magic Kickstarters. :)
I am also a backer....looking forward to finally play it.
Hope I'm proved wrong but as this is a Wasteland game I hope they finish it before moving onto their next game.
I'm definitely holding off until after release to await positive reviews / posts before even thinking about buying.
Once burnt (or thrice in my case) twice shy, as they say.

Yeah, I didn't want to be the one to piss on the potato chips, but I feel the same way. I've bought just about everything Wasteland has produced, and the best thing that could be said about them was that after a couple of patches the games were just ok.
Having purchased a number of Wastelands games, I know how you guys feel. But as the saying goes, "Hope springs eternal in the human breast...." I have been waiting a long time for an updated Master of Magic and I'm hoping Worlds of Magic will be the game I've been waiting for.
Wastelands Interactive hasn't been the first to make the claim that its game would be a successor to Master of Magic (remember Elemental: War of Magic (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103243-Stardock-Calls-Elemental-War-of-Magic-a-Complete-Fail)?). I just hope its claim will be a valid one.
Hey, there's a gameplay video right up there! Clearly it's working just fine!

There will never be a spiritual successor to Master of Magic or any other old game, ever....rather than let bygone memories of an ancient game taint my expectations and enjoyment of new releases I learned to just let it go and move on. The past is over, gone and will never come again. If I want Master of Magic then I play it....it's on GOG with the DOS emulator built right in. IMHO the new games in this genre are far superior to anything MoM ever was. I loved MoM in its day, played it to death, but playing it on GOG today is painful to watch, hear and, at best, is cumbersome to play.
Well said, Rayfer. I actually didn't play MoM (god knows what I was doing at the time) but you can say the same for many old classics. There are very few of them that are unique enough in their genre to hold up well today. I didn't play MoM but I'm willing to bet that if I had, I'd still prefer games like Fallen Enchantress and AoW2:SM.

Exactly. Like the original Xcom. An awesome game in its day and another I put countless hours into. When Xcom:Enemy Unknown came out in 2012 many people disliked it because it wasn't the 'spiritual successor' to the original because it lacked some of the original's features. I thought the new one was great in and of itself and needed no comparison to the old one to be enjoyed. Ps. I too like FA:Legendary Heros....great game.
As I never played the original MOM, I can't really say I'm hoping for a spiritual successor. I just want a good fantasy 4x game, that's all, and I liked Wasteland's KS presentation for WoM.

It's been done before.
Clash of Steel: World War II, Europe 1939-45 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/clash-of-steel-world-war-ii-europe-1939-45) became
Strategic Command: European Theater (http://www.mobygames.com/game/strategic-command-european-theater), to name one. And what about the
Age of Wonders series (http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/age-of-wonders-series)? Then there's
Colonization (http://www.mobygames.com/game/sid-meiers-colonization) and
Civilization IV: Colonization (http://www.mobygames.com/game/sid-meiers-civilization-iv-colonization).
What is so impossible about updating an old game while keeping the basic gameplay either the same or very similar?

In retrospect I would have posted it differently. It's all a subjective opinion anyway. My experience with GOG has been an eye opener. Old games I absolutely loved, like MoM and Xcom, just don't do it for me anymore, purchasing them was a waste of money....the newer games in those genres are so much better...again, just my experience. A series of ongoing releases like the Civ games, EU and HOI are a different case altogether. They are more an evolution than a remake. The original Xcom and the 2012 release of Xcom: Enemy Unknown is entirely different.

Man, you and I are on exactly the same page. When I first discovered GOG I bought a shameful amount of stuff, played each title, and was markedly underwhelmed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but whatever it was, I didn't get it.

It is indeed subjective. I wouldn't consider the bulk of the newer PC games any better than the old ones they are trying to "reimagine." They are prettier due to having better graphics and their interfaces are more user-friendly, but their basic gameplay is usually more limited due to them being designed to run on consoles as well as on PCs.
I have nothing against new games. I just wish there were more of them being released that I would like to play as much as I did the old titles.
I can only confirm that Worlds of Magic is going to be released on 11th of September.
If you guys have any questions I will try to answer.
Is that the date for the full release or the Early-Access/Beta?
If not, when is the beta going to start? (it's nearly September)
This is going to be Early Access release in beta stage.
The backers STEAM keys should be sent on 4th.
This is being released on Linux!!! \o/
I bet my PC ain't up to the task though. Although it does run AoW3.
Early Access to Worlds of Magic is being offered by GamersGate (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-WOM/worlds-of-magic) for $35.99 for the next 6 days, 13 hours, and 48 minutes.

Well, the 5th is slowly coming to an end I still don't have mine, while I see others already got it. :(
^Me either, but hopefully we'll see something today.

We are going to send you an email today with information how to get the keys.

Did you check your Spam?
Does Wastelands have the correct email address?
Through Kickstarter and the rewards survey they do.
And it's not in the Spam folder.
Got my key and downloading now :)
^ditto :D
So......thoughts, impressions, etc. etc.???
Gamersgate sent me a generic 20% off discount code for any one purchase. Used it for WOM. Some of you Gamersgate users should probably check your email to see if you have the discount code.
It's a Steam key and the Steam release is sometime today. Not sure when I'll get around to checking it out, but figured I should take advantage of my discount code and the early access discount for WOM in unison at GG.
I got the same thing. Not sure yet if I will be using it for Worlds of Magic since between the AoW expansion and Endless Legends hitting next week, plus the Sovereignty beta, I'm in magic up to my tuchus. I'll probably hold off to see if GG gets Wasteland II, and use it for that.
Don't wait too long that 20% code expires October 12!

Just got it installed (Steam) and unfortunately won't have time play for a bit. Fingers crossed that this is the 2nd coming of MoM. 12 schools of magic... some similar fantasy 4x titles have closer to 12 spells total. They seem to have laid the groundwork (well copied the groundwork) for a great game, but the execution wrt AI, balance, etc will be the kicker.
I am seeing some bugs - NullReferenceExceptions apparently - whether this has any significant impact on gameplay remains to be seen. Might be a bit early to dive in. Anyway, at this stage I'm cautiously optimistic and I'm fine with supporting this game even if the final product doesn't quite reach what they are aiming for. At least it isn't dumbed-down console trash like XCOM Overwatchâ„¢. Now, if someone can just remake Starflight!
The wiki page has lots of info for those interested in the game.
