So, who is going to splurge?

It would be a no brainer if there were Colonial Marines in it. But the lack of combat action has me on the fence.  The only reason I'm even interested is because I love the IP, setting and technology.

I would as I like horror games but the devs won't answer my question as to whether or not it's possible to re-bind the key controls.  I'll hold off until I find out if I can or not.

My cynicism says that's a thumbs down and not a pointer to the W-Y t-shirt (which is pretty cool, BTW).

Oh, wait. Now that I'm quoting your pic I see the "acmsucks" in the JPEG name line. Carry on.  O0

I bought it when it was on sale and it wasn't too bad for four bucks or whatever it was, but it's long since left my hard drive to make room for other games.

I do, deeply and respectfully request that I not change my handle, and as tribute I offer this....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBIgXhiOpeQ

I also offer my brief impressions of Alien Isolation..

F..Amazing.  Sorry, I know people love Aliens, but Alien and the horrific/beautiful mess that was Prometheus is really MY canon.  I popped on my Weyland-Yutani Cap, told my wife to turn off all the lights, and tore into this sucker.

Firstly, stunned I could play tonight.  Release is tomorrow but I could load up and play the whole game right now.  Needless to say Elite Dangerous and Wasteland 2 got sidetracked for a Gin Soaked Monday evening.

First impressions, stupid awesome.  Played a touch of the Nostromo DLC, and kind of wetted myself in terror remembering my 9 year old self illicitly watching Alien in my bedroom and hoping that horrific beast-thing is not coming for me out of my closet after I close my eyes.

Started the main campaign after I realized I didn't know what I was doing and I loved the 70's style on everything.  CRT's, old clicky IBM keyboards, "Welyan" everywhere.

Looking forward to more of this, with enforced dimming of the lights and a '55 screen.   Going to play Wasteland 2 for the remainder of the evening though.  Those Slicerdicers ain't going to kill themselves.

Good to know it doesn't completely blow chunks.

I'm NOT into stealthy hide/being chased games. At all. But this harkens back to days of terror spent in bed at night as a 6th-grader wondering why the hell I just HAD to watch Alien on HBO...

In any case, I'm encouraged. I liked some of the gameplay videos I've seen thus far also.

I'm not a stealther hider either.  I love combat games.

That said, yeah, as a kid the Alien DID scare me, and still does.  I love Lovecraft, and became a student of the making of the Alien film.  I was deeply impressed with HR Gieger, Dan O'Bannon and Ridley Scott's adherence to incorporating Alien into the Lovecraft mythos and making a truly disturbing whole.

As much as I love Aliens, and I DO love Aliens, it isn't what I really hold as my concept of what the films are about.

In the brief few hours I spent with Isolation, it got to the core of what bothered me, and still does about Alien.  I'm alone, something is stalking me, and I'm afraid.  The primal fear of we primates scared of the big cat.  It's good stuff.

But, as I say, I've got some M16's, RPG's and Meson Cannons, so lets send those Wasteland 2 Bots' back to their place.

I'm sure my wife will review my Isolation playthroughs on her blog better than I can.

I find the commercial reviews of this game quite interesting. They seem to either conclude that the game is THE BEST thing since the invention of sliced bread, or that the game is boring, too long, unimaginative and flat. I'm curious as to why the game is resulting in such divergent reviews at either end of the extreme.

Hmm. Perhaps there are those whom have had their nostalgia stirred and they want to like the game, and the ones that do not think it's any good are those that did not grow up with the same memories?

This is my theory, as well. However, I don't think that bodes well. A good game is a good game whether it evokes memories or not. If the only people who are finding enjoyment in it are those who are nostalgic for the original film, then I fear the game is most probably an ultimate failure. The nostalgic effect would certainly be cool initially, but once that fades away, the game must still stand or fall on its merit as a game.

It sounds like the game is a single-time playthrough...story driven.

Is there any replayability?  I was hoping it would be something like dynamic in that every time you start the game you are in a new part of the ship, the alien spawns somewhere randomly and then it's a race against the alien/time to get off the ship.

It doesn't sound like that is how the game plays.   :-\

I think I read smewhere that the alien's behavior is dynamic and unscripted and that the AI there is quite advanced. So, although the story is relatively linear, at least you never know where the alien is going to come from, or when.

Title: Re: Alien: Isolation
Post by: Jarhead0331 on October 07, 2014, 06:23:47 AM
Pretty much. Word is, if you try to fight it, you die. If you try to run after it sees you, you die. I think the only way to survive is for it to never know you are there. While this sounds like an authentic "Alien" experience, if I'm going to be honest with myself, it really does not appeal to me.

I don't mind stealth games, but for me they only work when the player character has options for lethality. Think, assassins creed, batman arkham city and most recently, shadow of mordor.  Here, you are just a powerless woman. No wonder RPS wrote a rave review of the game. The main protagonist is a female who is fully clothed throughout the entire game.

Moreover, although there is combat in Alien, it mostly resolves around fighting synthetics with a very limited list of improvised weaponry.

I think there is some combat in the game. At least, I saw some playthrough vids that showed the player fighting a syntheti...errr, excuse me, "artificial person."

Never saw combat with the Alien itself, which I suppose makes a certain sense given the game's storyline.

Speaking as a devil's advocate, you have to admit that it IS an unusual approach to an in-game hero persona.

It is, but like JH said I too at least want a lethal option. One of the reasons I did not like the new Thief too much is because theprotagonist is so damned weak starting out...there is just no fighting back at all if you're found. For me, that's just no fun. A game like Dead Space, on the other hand, where the player can build weapons and kick some ass occasionally, is much more gooder.

Maybe it's Fans vs non-fans.

"ERMAHGERD I'M ON THA NOSTROMO" vs. "I've not seen the movie and I'm playing a game that's X, Y and Z".

Jim Sterling (of the Jimquisition et al), one of the key critics who attacked the misleading marketing of the Colonial Marines game, gives Isolation a, well, sterling review.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/12346-Alien-Isolation-Review

QuoteAlien: Isolation is at its scariest when it's not doing anything, and I don't mean that as an insult. This is a game that not only understands its source material, it lives up to it.

Don't know when Yahtzee at the Escapist will do his Zero Punctuation review, possibly not this week.
Title: Re: Alien: Isolation
Post by: JasonPratt on October 07, 2014, 12:25:44 PM
Jim sums up the best pros and the worst con, which are both related, in two paragraphs here (from page 2):

QuoteThe beautiful thing about this experience is how it's consistently emergent. Very rarely do scripted scares ever occur. In one particular location, I stumbled upon a group of survivors blocking my path. I decided to throw a noisemaker into their midst, and watched as they panicked around it. I then hid in a closet and looked out through the viewing slots, just in time to see the Alien charging across the corridor in front of me. From offscreen, I heard gunshots and screams as the humans were slaughtered - all except one woman, who stumbled backwards in front of my viewing slot, firing offscreen, before the Xenomorph leaped back into view and murdered her. It was like something you'd see scripted in a film, but it's just how the game naturally played out, and it's full of moments like that.

The unpredictability works both ways. It can be brilliantly frightening, but also incredibly frustrating. You never know where the Alien may pop out from, and sometimes it can drop right in front of you, giving you no chance to escape (if it catches you, you ARE dead). When it's stalking the corridors, actively searching for prey, trying to avoid it is tense and nervewracking, but there's an exasperating quality in trying to avoid an invincible stalker that could turn around and spot you in a second, wanders with no pattern, and can never be outrun. At times, Isolation can be quite literally unfair, and more of a pain in the arse than a spooky experience.

He says unfair/genius duality extends to the save system, which is a set of manually operated checkpoints that take several seconds to operate, during which you could be murdered by any of the three hostile groups wandering around (survivors, synths, the Creature). The checkpoints will helpfully warn you about hostiles nearby, but I gather it does this only once you start the activation process! Which, if true, seems hideously sadistic, because by then the game locks you into the action.

Most of those reviewers are whipper snappers that didn't sneak Alien on Skinemax after Emmanuel on Friday After Dark at 3:00am on their click and drag cable box.

Wow, this single uncannily accurate sentence really brought me back.  Good times.

Seriously.  Emmanuel was so hot.

I can't confirm personally but someone posted this in the steam forums.

Yeah, I saw that but then I saw another person post that it wasn't possible to remap them so I'd like to get confirmation before I buy it.   Don't want to get burned again like I did with Divinity: OS.

I watched this video and I have to say, that looks crap pretty poor (and I don't think his voice over does it any favours)

Graphics look quite poor imo

Maybe it's the "game" is in the immersion, and I do love immersion in games, but I didn't really get any from that guys 2 20 minute videos...not really. 40 minutes and not a lot of anything.

What are you guys thinking of it (who are actually playing)...taking out the nostalgia aspect if you can?

Picked this up, even if I shouldn't.

Regarding the graphics & stability:

* It is a console port and it shows in some stuff like lack of Full Screen Anti-Aliasing (you don't need that on a system where you're rendering on 4K). There's post-processing anti-aliasing up to a 2x factor, so if you take a close look you'll probably see some aliasing creeping in. This only applies to the geometry - that is the edges - of objects in the game. The textures defaulted in my system to 16x Anisotropic Filtering, which is pretty good.

* On the other hand, the lighting in this game is f*cking amazing: it has texture and volume.

* I got very pretty consistent crashes - freezing my machine - with the Nvidia 344.11 drivers until I disabled vertical sync. Go figure.

Regarding the gameplay and immersion:

* After solving the freezes, I haven't been able to play the game much. I have only tried the "Crew Expendable" DLC which came with my pre-order. That DLC is basically re-enacting the scene when the Alien has killed already Harry Dean Stanton and scared the bejesus out of Yaphet Kotto, as the surviving members of the crew try to figure out a plan to get rid of the xenomorph.

* The characters feel a bit wooden - they were reciting lines from the movie as soon as I got near them (if you come back and forth, they'll be repeating those lines again, which feels a bit like you're in one of those theme park attractions with animatronic characters entering in hilarious loops). If you follow the script, though, in those initial stages, you do get a good immersion. When the Ian Holm lookalike recited his "encouragement" while I went down the hatch into the guts of the Nostromo, I did really feel like wanting to punch his android face.

* This game is f*cking scary. When the xenomorph caught me the first time - it just walked casually on my back while I was peeking around a corner, you know, in truly xenomorph fashion - I almost shat my pants, and I'm not kidding. And the xenomorph definitely isn't scripted - it is out there, with its own agenda, hunting you and I would say that sometimes he's "playing games" with you. You feel very vulnerable all the time, and when you're checking the motion detector and spot a blip there... man, my testicles retract quickly as hell and my breathing gets really heavy.

They totally capture the spirit of the first movie, if you get past the rather wooden NPCs that feel like props. I am not sure that this will be detrimental in the actual game: in principle, everyone but you is dead or crazy with fear, so not many opportunities for socializing :)

Thanks Bletchley (going to the movies this weekend??)

It does sound atmospheric...but I'm just not sure sneaking around and shitting myself is a good idea - not at my age.

Even with a full compliment of weapons, I'm not sure I'd be hardcore enough...but I would definitely have been more persuaded if it was based on Aliens with some badass arsenal.

Steam sale in a month, no? I'll give it a peak then - or at Christmas maybe

Heh, not a chance of going to the movies,  got my in-laws in town visiting :)

Yeah,I must say that facing this digital rendition of the xenomorph with an oversized lighter isn't very awesome. I do see that in the game there's a revolver, and a shotgun. Sure the Colonial Marines had better kit than that, but it didn't really help them a lot, the casualty rate was 90%.

And yes, definitely pick this up in a sale. Right now you'd get quite good value for money, but not awesome unless you're truly a fan of shitting your track suit pants :)

All of the tech in the game is very reminiscent of the original Alien movie.

Even the computer terminals have that "the future as seen by 1979" feel to it.

The lighting is fantastic.

The music is straight up incredible and VERY good at heightening the tension.

The SFX are...well, there's nothing quite like seeing these videos where they're sneaking around but you hear the far-off thuds of something in the air ducts. Unless it's close-up sounds of the same thing. Or the thud-thud-thud of the Alien's footsteps.

Very immersive-looking game. I will probably buy it eventually.

Also, note that if you're playing with a vibratorDAMMIT!  >:( If you're playing with a controller that has vibration, the xeno's steps will cause it to tremble. That's extra immersion.

Disclaimer: I'm not playing it nor do I own it, but I watched all of MetraGamer's 'Let's Play' videos for the game from beginning to end.

Your mileage will vary, depending on:

- If you are or are not a fan of the original Alien and Aliens movies.
- If you love stealth-type games.

A lot of complaints I've read on the game essentially say "YAWWWN" because not much happens. Sure, okay...maybe not. But it's the environment, the Alien AI randomizing your encounters, and the pure tension that all mesh to make this a highly interesting experience. Watch a video or two; I recommend a 'No Commentary' video. PewDiePie has videos where he talks throughout, and he's annoying, so avoid those. I also recommend Angry Joe's Let's Play video; though he has commentary and he's playing it with 'Other Joe,' it's entertaining to see their reactions.

A video or three should give you a good idea. As a reviewer said, it's more about the Alien not being there, than it actually being there. Especially when you hear it banging around in the ducts...you know it's only a matter of time before it arrives and starts hunting you.

And the later stages of the game are awesome. The ending kind of sucks - that's my only complaint. It's very open-ended, that's all I will say about that.

There IS combat in the game. It's not the end-all of the game, though; it's a means to an end and should generally be avoided if possible, because big noises draw Mr. Banana-Head like a starving dog to food. Movement will, also - you need to use your motion tracker prolifically if you want to survive, because the Alien isn't always noisy in announcing its arrival in the area. The combat is more likely against the AI drones though ammo is so rare you'll more often be avoiding them than engaging them, because they are tough sons-of-bitches. This is not DOOM where you're running around blowing everything up, and that's probably part of why some people don't like the game. The Alien is pretty much indestructable; flamethrowers piss it off and it will run off when you blast it with one, but it WILL be back to hunt you. I've not seen anyone try other weapons on it but I doubt highly that they'd do anything other than make it mad. Humans and AI drones are pretty much the only things you can take out in the game. And no, there's no Colonial Marine 10mm automatic weapons. As mentioned, there is a flamethrower; there's also a revolver, a wrench you use as a tool and as a beating weapon (which is good against humans but not so much against AI drones), a bolt gun, a shotgun, smoke bombs, EMP mines, noisemakers, and other things. The materials to make these, as well as the ammo, as I mentioned, is few and far between, though. There are MedKits you can build and use, also.

Patience in this game is a big, big virtue. Not to mention balls.

The haters wanted the action and explosions of Aliens. The fans appreciate it for being more true to Alien with the tension and what you can't see.

As I said, your mileage will probably vary.

I'm definitely going to pick it up at some point, just not for fifty bucks. Its more a matter of economics for me than not wanting to buy it.
Title: Re: Alien: Isolation

I can't imagine it would get "tedious", exactly...  ???

However, I've been lucid dreaming for 8+ hours every night for almost 40 years, and I already have trouble enough dealing with stress and nightmares in that (interesting though it usually also is). I very seriously doubt I'll be adding to my nightmare fodder with this game, despite being curious about the experience and loving the late 70s future retro atmosphere being so true to the first film.

Thanks Banzai Cat for that detailed post.

I think it's a sale item for me...though I seem to be trying to convince myself otherwise...mainly because I LOVE the original ALIEN movie.

I'm just not convinced it's enough for me to be scared throughout the game to be able to enjoy a game. I think I'd have much preferred the visceral blasting of hundreds of xenomorphs charging at me and my marine buddies. That game (an early Aliens one who's name escapes me) was scary enough AND I had a shit load of weapons.

I think the idea is pretty cool...I'm just not sure it would be my bag. In fact, I'm convinced it won't be...but then I question that because the retro look and the lighting and the atmosphere and the xenomorph and the feel of the ALIEN movie...they make me all confused again.

As with yourself and JH - a huge cut in price would persuade me to give it a punt.

You and a lot of other folks. It pretty much negated Ripley's actions in Aliens.

It wasn't supposed to be that way, but Alien 3 went through so many rewrites that what made to the screen was a mish-mashed mess of story ideas.

This early draft would have been a much better third film

Yahtzee's should go up this afternoon, I'd expect, as we know he and Jim Sterling were playing it earlier. That'll be interesting, because he hates to admit he likes a game and is super-critical, though partially for sake of the humor.

Watching Let's Plays of Isolation is what made me want to buy it.  I'm a massive fan of the films, and seeing how faithfully they've recreated the look and feel, and seeing how plain nasty that alien is, made me want it badly.

Title: Re: Alien: Isolation

Huw, yes, and once upon a time I did (when I could recall it was a dream, which didn't always happen -- consequently the more 'normal' dreams were the ones which tended to actually 'kill' me. ;) )

Even so, that took me several years to learn how to do as a young boy, and there's a big difference between lucid dreaming for ten or fifteen minutes and lucid dreaming for around eight hours. I burn around 3 lbs of weight every night just from the electrochemical expenditure. That's a MASSIVE amount of biochemical energy, and the stress naturally feeds back into the content.

Seriously, I wish I could turn it off. If you know how to do that, pm me! Multi-decade exhaustion plus increasing external stress is what probably burned out my control around 10 years ago -- the source of the external stress has mostly waned and I'm verrrrryyyy slowly getting the ability back, but I noticed that at about the same time my very-short-term memory was shot (more than usual ;) ), which I expect is connected with the loss of being able to force content manipulation the dreaming state. (I can't judge fencing bouts anymore in real life, specifically not foil or sabre, the ones requiring a judgment of right of way.)

The setting was kind of cool - isolated alien planet with even more isolated prison.

Roc was pretty cool.

Everything else was shite. Though the movie was pretty much doomed from the start since it went through so many changes and reorganizations. I'm actually surprised it made it to the screen.

I did like Alien Resurrection to an extent. Thought it was a lot better than Alien 3 but not as good as the first two. The human/alien hybrid thing at the end was just retarded and it lost just about all of its cred with me at that point.

That's partly because studios prepay a lot of the ridiculous amounts of money necessary to get a movie made at all.

When that happens, it's hard to resist the temptation to try to manage your godawful amounts of money at risk out there in production, so as not to lose it at least.

Also, I like Alien 3 and 4, but I originally had trouble adjusting back to a more first-movie vibe after Aliens -- we know the creatures can be killed en masse even though it's difficult, so the threat level felt off -- and when they sacrificed the other survivors to the plot at the very beginning I felt pretty betrayed and couldn't get past that. Some years later I rewatched A3 and felt better about it. Also, while the director's cut of a movie doesn't always help (it tends to bloat Aliens for example), I thought it did in this case, though I haven't watched even that version for a while so I couldn't tell you why I thought there were improvements. Probably just in fleshing out the characters some more, would be my guess.

I own the amazing Blu collection, though I haven't watched any of the movies that way yet; but I did watch a lot of the A3 extras, for more information on the difficulties and on what the movie might have originally been. Some of the original ideas, I have to agree, just weren't going to work (a wooden spaceship monastery, with a pool and kind of a garden of eden on top exposed to space...? am I remembering that right, it couldn't have been THAT crazy, could it??), but I do wish they had managed to keep a little more of them.

Yep, you're remembering the wooden structure in space thing from one treatment. That was going to have Hicks and Bishop teaming up to fight alien hordes...would have been awesome.

I think Biehn was all in for Alien 3 but want to say he dropped out either because he hated the script or they wouldn't pay whatever salary he was demanding. (Maybe both?) I do recall he ended up getting almost as much cash for Alien 3 as he did for Aliens, just from them using his likeness for a few seconds in Alien 3.

Interesting -- one of the Badass Digest writers (not FILM CRITIC HULK, who has been worryingly absent since mid-August) ran an article yesterday defending Alien3.

http://badassdigest.com/2014/10/15/its-time-you-reconsidered-alien-3/

I would have bet money it would be in response to the game's return to the original film's design; but it wasn't. It was in reply to Fincher's recent Gone Girl instead, as a side-effect of discussing how the new film ranks in Fincher's body of work.

QuoteAnd besides: when I consider the original trilogy, I've always considered the films to be loosely structured around a birth/life/death cycle.

A fair point. I'll give him that.

I still hate Alien 3, though. It's easily the worst of the four films. At least, IMO.

Pretty much this, in a nutshell. The underwater scene was pretty epic, too.

Like I said, I liked Resurrection in general, until it hit the end and they did that human/Alien hybrid bullshit. That was a HUGE ::) moment and any decentness I felt the film had was lost.

I kind of liked Prometheus, but like every other damn Alien movie they've made since Aliens (including the AVP crapola), each film has been so wide of the mark its embarrassing and a wonder the studios haven't gotten a clue after what, five MEH movies after Aliens? Lord.

Dan Hedaya as the general in charge of a super secret research ship made me laugh. All I could think of is, "Who put Nick Tortelli in charge?"

Oh and who thought it was a good idea to make the default emergency protocol to return the ship full of cloned Xenomorphs to Earth? That's the stupid shit you get when you put Nick Tortelli in command.

^ Ha, yeah...well it's not all entirely his fault. You write the script, the studio execs tear it to pieces and second-guess it to death, the casting agents get people that in no way fit with the roles written...the director interprets the script in a different way...and on and on and on.

Though AR had a lot less studio interference than A3 did, I think.

I kind of liked the second AvP movie, though. Finally, Aliens on Earth. Though...sigh. Yeah.

Fox really put Fincher through hell on A3. It was his first feature and he reportedly had to check in daily with the studio execs on what he had shot and then they basically told him what to shoot the next day. He was so pissed about all the bullshit that he very nearly left Hollywood before his career began.

Not great, but not as bad as A3 or AR.

I think it'll be on sale too but like JD said, it'll be a minor discount...maybe 50% off, tops. For my economics that's a 'minor discount' off of a $50 game. If it goes to under $10, well, hell yeah. Might have to wait until next summer, but that's fine. I have plenty of shiny toys right now.

Yeah, that's how I usually justify watching Resurrection - decent enough in a silly action film kind of way.  I don't regard it as an Alien film though.

But the AvP films were just tragic in my opinion.  No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

On a semi-related note:

I finished watching the 2nd Doctor's Web of Fear last night, and was impressed with how it took a Lovcraftian space horror and cute furry yeti robots (returning from a couple of stories earlier in the season), and made a fairly legitimate (for the budget) combination of the original "Who goes there?" short story and Hawks' film adaptation of The Thing From Another World. Which naturally opens up comparisons to X the Terror From Beyond Space and thence to Alien or rather Aliens.

Meanwhile, Angry Joe's actual review goes up:

Incidentally, the Joes (not the ones from the game, though he makes those jokes along the way) confirmed something in this review that I had been wondering about: can the Alien hear your motion tracker? YES IT CAN!!

It appears much more often than 3 times. He's exaggerating. He tends to do that. :)

I won't spoil it for anyone that's on the fence, but it gets more intense later in the game.

Joe said the first two times the Xeno shows up are kind of scripted partials, and he thought they could have been better combined into one pre-occurrence, if one was needed in order to salt the early stages of the game with some actual Alien action.

I gather (not having played the game but having seen several videos of different stages) that Joe and the other Joe were livestreaming the first time the Alien fully shows up to stake, with Angry Joe loading before that point to get Other Joe there quickly in order to see his reactions: the player seems expected to hide under a gurney, kind of forcing a particular cinematic shot of its full body pouring from the vent but mostly its legs. After that, it hunts freely on any map once the plot triggers.

By the way, I like how the Xeno is much larger than it typically seems from Aliens style games (and the 2nd movie itself), including Colonial Marines. In the first film the effect kind of shuffles around because sometimes it's a guy in a suit (smaller than in the game) and sometimes a puppet (I think, thus can be larger, or at least the suit is shot in a way to make it seem much larger.)

This is a promo set up by IGN a little while back, showing portions throughout the game up to the end, as employees play it. I guess I've seen the end now -- I can see what people (including Angry Joe, and some Grogheads upthread) mean by a weakly abrupt end.

The Alien in the first movie was played by a dude in a creature suit - a 7-foot, 2-inch-tall gentleman.

I've seen that video...I assumed it was a small episode designed for PR...?  The players seem to be encountering the alien for the first time then finishing shortly afterwards.
Title: Re: Alien: Isolation
Post by: JasonPratt on October 17, 2014, 12:59:00 PM
Oh, it's taller in-game -- it seems like the size of the Alien Queen from the Colonial Marine game (keeping in mind she looked small for a queen compared to the movie). It has to hunch to creep around the corridors; the designers even emphasize the size by making the floor shake when it walks.

Admittedly, some of that tall appearance may come from forcing a lot of clever camera shots (as in the movie for that matter). But compare with the standard human-based aliens in Colonial Marines (a game by the same publisher though not by the same studio) which aren't much if at all bigger than any of the soldiers.

No kick-dancing "Hello my baby, hello my darling" Alien here...! It feels like a dragon.

(I know some people, like AngryJoe, were disappointed it only used the walls and ceiling for transitions in and out of an area, but that's in tune with the first movie: the suit was rather clunky.)

Speaking of, I just now realized that the crew's exosuits worn in the first movie actually look like proto-Space Marine suits. From WH40K I mean, not from Aliens. The proportions aren't right -- though they look closer-to-codex proportions when the cameraman's kids are wearing scaled down suits for shots outside the landing struts and with the Space Jockey, because the kids' skulls, and thus their helmets, are smaller in proportion to the padding -- and the lighting isn't good for showing the similarities usually. But the production diaries show them in clearer lighting.

Also, random Groggy trivia: a lot of the Nostromo set was built from WW2 graveyard planes! (Though they sold the titanium to recover the cost of buying the planes from the graveyard.)

I had pulled out my Blu set docs to see if I was only imagining there being a larger-scale puppet, not only a suit (per the conversation upthread), and got distracted.  8) Still haven't gotten to the creature effects yet, though I've seen quite a bit of the suit.

F1 2014 did make it into my shopping cart - but - I did realise if I do buy it, I won't play 2013 which means stopping the only career I've ever taken past 5 races!

So that's out

Then I was looking at Alien:Isolation and I'm bemused by all the options (including Worldwide and EU options)

So I've not purchased anything at the moment   O:-)

Go with worldwide, pretty much means playable from any country.  Made a number of purchases and have never had a single issue with them but you gotta do what makes you feel comfortable.  Using PayPal is a good option since they never get your credentials or payment details.

um.....yeah.

£23 was a good enough reduction for me.

I have held out on F1 2014 though because I don't want to abandon my current F1 2013 season - and I've never really gone past a half dozen races in a game.

So F1 2014 is on hold...but Alien:Isolation - after watching the movie this morning - I couldn't resist at that price

Besides UCG me auld buddy - you were expecting - I could'nae let ye doon, eh?

lol

So it's broke. Well, there's a bug where Axel says he'll call an elevator and then just stands there.

Apparently re-loading a previous save could fix it

JD-
Make sure you read some reviews on F1:2014 before you buy.  It is not being well received.

The fix (loading a pre save) did work.

Toonces - I know. I think the main beef is that they have seemingly released an "interim" product with a next gen product following sometime in the future. Whether that's 3 months, 6 months or what I don't know. But seems a lot of people aren't going to pay full price for a product that's only a "stop gap".

Also, I did hear that the McLaren livery isn't the current livery but one "pre-season" agreed by McLaren to be in the game...apparently.

It does seem a bit mean to charge full price.

I don't know...it still seems to have the new car shapes, tracks (A1, Russia), turbo V6(?) engines and energy recovery system (whether they work or not, I'm not sure).

I'm not ready to move yet though anyway...thanks for the heads up though - I'll do some reading.

One thing I do wish is they allow importing of your old career - so your stats are kept and you can continue. They may well...I've just never finished a season and nor have I looked at importing (because I never finished)...but if they don't allow that, it's an option I'd like.

I dunno how it is in game but in real life the Russian circuit is one impressive track.

Toonces - where have you read where the game is not being received well? Reviews? Forums? If forums - which ones?

I find it a bit strange there's nothing on it over at SimHQ - in fact they don't even have a Forum for F1 by Codies  ???

Does F12014 have proper weapons, or is the Alien invulnerable again?

Slight thread crossover.

As long as it doesn't go on for more than half a dozen posts, it's ok (I think  ;D )

Actually Toonces - nm

I found this review and suffice to say the lack of career progression is not something I want to buy into.
http://www.pcgamer.com/f1-2014-review/

This is indeed a stop gap.

I don't make a habit of sensible decisions when buying games - but I tend to try and not pay the same or more for a product that should be an update to the previous game when in fact it's a cut down version!

I'll wait for the proper F1 game...whenever that may be.

Our lives can now be complete, for Yahtzee has finally spoken. Guest starring Mum-raa.   :o

"Never let it be said I can't admit when I'm wrong, and I'll murder anyone who says otherwise."

Probably his game of the year, if I had to make a bet. (Though Mordor will surely be in the top five, too.)

TotalBiscuit is still busy recovering from holes in his stomach and, apparently, the new wife.  >:D

Alright, four years late, but I'm just now getting into this game.

I have all the DLC.

I went ahead and booted up the story mode first.  I'm still on mission 2.  From reading some walkthroughs, I appear to be just before my first encounter with the Alien...

Which is the point of this post.  I friggin' hate little puzzle maze games where you have to look around to find the little "thingies" that you're supposed to press to allow you to move to the next point.  I mean, it infuriates me.  I went around and around in circles for probably 15-20 minutes before I finally looked up a walkthrough online to see what I was missing.  Oh, the "trap door" behind the bar on the floor...yeah, I probably never would have found that.  And it just happened again after I got past that part.

I know, for most people this is simple simon stuff.  But for me, I just hate the linear puzzle games.  I was about to boot the survivor mode, but it said it would ruin the story mode.  Ugh.  So I guess I gotta suck it up and play through the story.

Having said that, the game is pretty, and the audio is awesome.  I still haven't seen the Alien, but I understand it's not much farther on, if I can find all the little thingies I have to press, pick up, stick in holes, etc.

Not gonna lie, when the game said I had to go down the damn trapdoor AFTER THE ALIEN, I indeterminately paused the game. Because there is no way I'd go down that hole, FOLLOWING AFTER THE ALIEN!

Yeah, I mean, it's a good game and all.  But it's stressful.

I don't typically play games to be stressed.
