Task Force 1942 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/329680/)
Across the Rhine (http://store.steampowered.com/app/329620/)
...for $5.24, may have to spring for TF1942 8)
Seems to be a few more oldies as well: Command HQ, Nam, Silent Service II
Those were both great games.....TF1942 was hard to win .... O0

Good stuff... thanks for the heads up, in my cart!
PE
Nice. I always hoped that these would appear on GOG with all the extra goodies the originals included.
Sweet! Loved Command HQ back in the day. Now we just need Red Storm Rising! O0
Wow, talk about OLD games!
Across the Rhine *sigh* The most disappointing game of all time.
Command HQ!!!! That will be mine tonight!
I wish they'd include the option to separate out old games. I have no interest in nostalgia.
even for me they look too dated....so will be passing myself....but them releasing these oldies do give some hope they might stumble on some good stuff eventually..

Wow!
Task Force 1942 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/task-force-1942) was released in 1992 and
Across the Rhine (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/across-the-rhine) was released in 1995. Of them all, I think I might still play
Command HQ (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/command-hq), which was released in 1990. I would have expected GOG.com to be the primary legal source for games as old as these, but it doesn't even offer some of them for sale.
Incidentally, I own all of them with the exception of
NAM (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/nam), which wasn't by MicroProse and whose DOS version did not appear until 1998. My big problem with games of that vintage is that many of them that I own are on 5.25" floppies and I don't have a working computer that has that type of drive. Hence the reason why I am repurchasing many of my old DOS games.
God how I loved Command HQ! And Global Conquest!
It looks like whomever (Nightdive Studios? Retroism?) has recoded many of these games to work on modern OSs including OSX and Linux.

Yeah, I liked
Global Conquest, too, but not quite as much as I liked
Command HQ. They were both developed by the same company, Ozark Softscape (http://www.mobygames.com/company/ozark-softscape).
I wasn't aware of the existence of those two companies, Staggerwing. Thanks for enlightening me. O0
TF1942 sounds interesting, but I really need to hear how it holds up before I pull the trigger.
Loved Command HQ back in the day...wow, I missed that one in the bundle they had on Steam. The graphics are heavily dated but that still brings back good memories.
Not quite sure it's worth $5.24 to me, though. $1.99 would. I dunno.
Oh boy...gotto to buy Task Force 1942....spent hours on that one! :smitten:

But not necessarily Win8.
There are quite a few games by Retroism (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Retroism#sort_by=_ASC&sort_order=ASC&publisher=Retroism&page=1) and Night Dive Studios (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?publisher=Night%20Dive%20Studios#sort_by=_ASC&sort_order=ASC&publisher=Night%20Dive%20Studios&page=1) on Steam. I am surprised and somewhat disappointed that those same titles are not available from GOG.

It was a fantastic game in 1992. it might be pretty sad these days.

Red Storm Rising was one the the first PC wargames I bought. Always seemed to loose (not unusual in that).

I played it enough to win a few campaigns. Often came down to finding that Typhoon hiding under the ice, which practically required you get so close to it that he shoots at you at the same time you get a vague sonar contact. Then you do the BOL launch and torpedo dodge dance. :) Sometimes I would never even detect the bastard. >:(

Valve has much deeper pockets. Much, much deeper...

I never knew what the process was to get a game sold by a retailer. How does that work? Do retailers have to pay game developers so much for each game before they are able to sell them?
So, about Across the Rhine...I never played it, but it looks decent by today's standards (graphics, mainly). Looks like it gives you medals and such; is there a promotion system in place too?
TF1942, I did play a few times but I'd prefer something less hardcore like Pacific Fleet.

If I remember correctly, Across the Rhine was a big disappointment at the time of its release. It had all the parts that should add up to a great game, but for some reason, I remember it being a let down and an overall failure.

It was heavily marketed by the gaming media at the time as M1 Tank Platoon in World War 2. While Microprose never intended to make it that game, they did absolutely nothing to dissuade the pre-release impressions by the gaming community that it this was just the next in the line of great Microprose sims. This of course was way before the internet was what it is today, so the direct lines of hype and feedback from developers that exist today didn't exist then. Pretty much the only avenue of info came from PC Gamer (I think it was still PC Entertainment then) and Computer Gaming World and a few dedicated boards on AOL and Usenet.
A lot of people, myself included, purchased the game fully expecting a simulator and got something...well...else. It got hammered by magazine reviews, probably a lot less on its merits and a lot more on the fact that it wasn't the game people expected.
It was one of my greatest gaming disappointments. I returned the game, but I have to be honest with myself that I never really gave it a fair shake.
Now that is showing some age.
" I returned the game "
It seems like yesterday, pawing through what Babbages had on the shelf.

Indeed. I returned it to the Montgomery Mall Electronics Botique, back in the day when you could return a game within 30 days, no questions asked, just because it sucked.
I remember distinctly using the refund to purchase Mechwarrior 2, which was a far far superior experience.
I remember that policy (I used to work at EB way way back when). I remember thinking how people would probably take advantage of it but they didn't, surprisingly.
Just make sure you have an appointment next year with your optician...because looking at those (especially Command HQ) for any length of time is going to damage your eyes!
Definitely my money is safe in my wallet at the mo ;D
