Also, what's peoples opinion of Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich. I always liked Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, and have been looking for something to fill that void.
Alea Jacta Est looks to be the only thing I'm going to pick up. If Jim Cobb and Bobbit both say it is wonderful, it has got to be good. I also don't have any strategic wargames from the Ancient Rome period.

Well, HoI works :P
And HoI4 is more finished :P
I don't know. It's not finished. Not anywhere near finished. There are still lots of bugs to go through. It's still only solo (unless you open up your computer). No AI. No Netplay. Broke. What's not to like :P
Seriously though I did buy it second hand from someone (on these boards) because I love the look of the game and the play method sounded cool
Alea Jacta Est was superb. As was Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich. Great games. I'd listen to other peoples opinion of Eagle Day because it can be heavy ... it is a GG game after all.

Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue . I enjoyed it and found the monster not as scary as say WITPAE. Interesting use of cards also. I did not regret the purchase.

Slash, if you liked DC Blitzkrieg Waraw to Paris, DC Case Blue is a no brainer. If anything, it's better -- and the game engine is much improved from the original, making turn processing times much shorter.
I've been spending more time with WITE lately, after being pretty hugely disappointed with it when it first came out. My negative opinion of WITE has softened somewhat, but I'd still take DC Case Blue over WITE any day of the week, if forced to choose.
Make no mistake. Case Blue is a Big game, despite not covering the entire war a la WITE. So, it's a game to savor, not likely a game you can finish up in a couple of nights.
I can't recommend it highly enough. Superb game.
For some reason Case Blue for me is much more manageable than WITE.
I don't know why. The amount of counters in WITE is probably less at times then CB.
It just works as a game. It has never felt like work to me to make a turn.
Coming from a boardgame background CB is one of the best games I have played, which is way too many.
Lol! Look at world in flames compared to my purchase price.
Should I bother to get the RUS boxed version? I have this and the WOFF expansion teed up.

It might be just me, but the last year has been a constant stream of a patches and still seemed like going strong. Just don't trust starting a monster game only to discover some bug later in the game. Maybe I am just tainted since I expected to play this last year and spent decent amount on it. I do like the books and that was part of the attraction. Maybe if your starting now with a lot of fixes done it would be a different experience.
Just my two cents..,
Hmm, do the patches break saves then? I envisioned playing an on-going solitaire game that would last for who knows how long.

Not entirely sure....the list of fixes per patch has been lengthy....so even if it doesn't break a save I wonder if still impacts gameplay because of so many changes being done. Simply don't know.

Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich has no actual 'flight sim' component such as SWOTL had. A closer comparison with SWOTL's strategic layer over a flight sim would be Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/353/details/Battle.of.Britain.II.-.Wings.of.Victory) and it's only 10 US bucks during the sale.

There is no benefit to the physical copy besides a disc and disc case. The manual is just a pdf on the disc, which is the exact same as the download but you get the privilege of paying $10 more for it.

Mate - it's still broke. Apparently switching some things off helps, but IIRC the things to switch off are pretty core to the game...i.e. part of the fun - supply being one. From what I gather (and I could be wrong) supply still isn't working.

Thinking of COH Storm of Steel - not sure though as forum looks rather dead
The CoH game was one that didn't transition well into a computer game. The main reason for that was the 3D implemented and rules change - both of which
made the boardgame. The graphics and counters on the boardgame are top notch...something was lost in the transition to computer.
I believe the developer changed the game to have a 2D option with the chits looking as the boardgame, but the game still had the 3D implementation of the LoS iirc.
It didn't hit the sweet spot for me I hoped it had. Not a bad game, especially with the developer eventually adding the board game feel, looks and rules.
To be fair, boardgames seldom do translate well. Something (for me) to do with the physical feel and setup of everything

Didn't do it for me as well. My reasoning is that it's so gamy that real-world tactics don't work well.

Ditto. At least with other games I bought and haven't played much, I can put the blame on myself. I talked myself into this one figuring I'd have the year or 2 to play around before the AI was out. It's been too broken for all but the most diehard WIF fanboy to play up to this point. The forum activity (or lack of) seems to bear that out too. At the rate things are going, we might be on Windows 16 and have to run the game in a virtual machine.

lol.
Buying a known broken game = bad
Re-buying a known broken game = proper mental.
Of course I'm not going to buy it again. I may well do when it's working, fixed, has multi play and AI - possibly.
I would love those books though. I'd likely pay £50 just for them - but of course because Matrix/Slitherine screwed the release up and shafted everyone, they couldn't come up with any "packages" to sell. So you're stuck buying the game for £60 broken and as a DD or buying the game for £60 broken and as a physical copy which will give you the printed manuals...another mental aspect of that game's release.
I don't want to be too "down" on Matrix. They've gave me a huge amount of gaming pleasure in the past - but the release of that game is not just unjustified, it's borderline criminal I would've thought.
I'll learn it one day though...I promise myself

At the rate things are going, we might be on Windows 16 and have to run the game in a virtual machine.
That was my original thinking as well....I always heard how great a board game it was, so I thought I would play it and try and learn the system solitaire before the AI came out...at worst, I thought that was a year or two away. If I am not mistaken at release, Matrix released a message that said something like ALL issues would be resolved in two weeks, which obviously later on they had to revise that statement as we still sit here in fix mode. To be honest, I have zero hope that an AI will ever be developed at this point, just can't imagine they got the kind of sales they needed to really keep this alive long term. Even if it does get implemented, I can only imagine we are years away from ever seeing it and by then the game likely will need an overhaul because its technology/development platform will be outdated.
The interesting part about this monster war game is I am not sure if I have ever seen anyone report they completed a full large campaign in this game, even during the beta testing. Therefore, I can't imagine that there are not issues lurking in the later parts of the game nobody has discovered yet....really demotivates me into spending a lot of time with the game, keeping in the back of my mind that I likely will see a failure at some point. I will need to see a successful campaign completed before I would even consider putting time into it.
One good thing that came out of this for me is that it helped me reduce the amount of new games I buy on impulse (not completely cured yet, but certainly a little more selective than a year ago) :)

War Plan Orange is a little less complex than either version of War In The Pacific, but it's still just as time consuming. :smitten:
However, it's necessarily missing any improvements introduced in the Admiral's Edition (and subsequent patching) for WitP.
Couldn't resist. Picked-up Case Blue. The way I play it'll probably be more like Case Black and Blue.

Thanks for the info on uv.....didn't see it in their sales flyer, but I looked in the store and it is also on sale for $9...will have to consider it.
My old disk copy of UV ran sluggishly even on modern computers. Clicking the UI buttons, moving the map, etc was a bit frustrating but doable. WitP doesn't have quite the same delayed UI response that it does.
Dunno if that's an issue with the digital version or not.

No comparison. Two totally different games and styles. UV is WitP in a smaller scale with smaller scenarios.
Uncommon Valor seems to be unbearably laggy for me under Windows 8.1. If I try to run it in windowed mode it just freezes up on me. :(
UV is an older game, at least 10 years or more so Win8 may not play nice with it. Are there any Win 95/98/xp compatibility options you have tried yet?
Flashpoint Campaigns is the game I'd recommend to anyone as I'd know I hadn't gone and wasted the gamers money as they will love it. I daren't recommend any others on there as I know they are marmite type games..people love em or hate em..but FCRS gets all love.
I too was thinking about COH Storm of Steel..but I know deep down I'd probably hardly play it as COH barely gets touched. However more units might raise the bar abit more with the game.

I figured...maybe one day it will realize it's potential but as I said in the past, I have already written it off as my my worst personal mistaken in buying a game.
I toyed with buying this at Historicon. But no AI, and no multi-player. I decided to go with a copy of the WiF boardgame (got very lucky and found an unpunched copy of the Final Edition on Amazon of all places for $100) and the vassal module.

UV is an older game, at least 10 years or more so Win8 may not play nice with it. Are there any Win 95/98/xp compatibility options you have tried yet?
I tried compatibility modes but they didn't work either. I finally tried windowed mode (-w switch) and it works better but the window it's in is too small for me play it comfortably.

I'm sorry for recommending it then. I played this in Win 7 but not yet on my Win 8 machine. :'(

Oh, no, don't be sorry! It does work and I will be able to play it at some point. I have a couple of older laptops around here somewhere. :)
Or if you have an extra monitor and cable you can set up a second screen with lower resolution to make the game window appear bigger and then fling the window onto it and play.
I use a virtual PC for all my older games, and just isolate it so it dosnt connect to the net, you have setting in each virtual PC to disable the network adapter , you can use vware player , vitual box and so on , I use them to play away team one of the best star trek games I ever played
Just a reminder that today is the last day of the sale.....probably the first year in a long time that I didn't pick up a single Matrix sale item....
I bought one title, had a coupon for storms of steel so picked that up to complete my conflict of heroes collection. The least i've bought in a very long time.

Same here. At the moment, I own every Matrix/Slitherine title I want to play and/or am likely to play at any point in the foreseeable future.
Yep, I didn't buy anything either as the only game I'm interested in right now is Hannibal: Terror of Rome and it wasn't on sale.
Nothing for me either. Like the rest of you, anything I wanted, I've got.
The only thing I bought - as a Christmas present, was WitW...nothing from the sale.
The last thing I bought from Matrix (through Steam) was Flashpoint Campaigns and that was a re-buy as opposed to a new purchase. I can't remember the last one before that.
I'm not even sure there's anything on the horizon...apart from Brother Against Brother - which never seems to be any closer to release (though they are often keeping their cards close to their chest), nothing in Coming Soon peaks my interest
I grabbed Civil War 2.. was looking at that and Flashpoint, but since I enjoyed ACW 1, I figured couldn't go wrong to get the upgrade.
I'm really considering pulling the trigger on Flash Point Campaigns Red Storm....though I promised myself no new games for a long while.

Same here.
I picked up Tiller's Napoleonic game for nostalgia more than anything else.
I told myself there was nothing on sale that I wanted. But then based on a friends recommendation I picked up Decisive Campaigns Blitz and Case Blue. Glad I did.
I didn't buy anything either although my brother bought me Flashpoint Campaigns for Christmas.
Uncommon Valor and World in Flames for me.
didnt buy any :( had to buy new gfx card instead
No new Matrix games for me either, but I did purchase a few last year. So they still got my fistful of cash just more of it.

Have you played it yet?
If so, what do you think of it?
Good Hunting.

Sorry, not yet. I started the tutorial and realized this was a game I where I really needed to read the manual to play. Over half way through but got sidelined by a Civ4 craving. Will get back to it shortly.
I got Alea Jacta Est and Hannibal: Carthage and Rome. Maybe at some point I'll have enough time to play them.
