Title: I get high with a little help from my FRIDAY
Post by: MetalDog on December 05, 2014, 06:57:06 AM
Well, it's FRIDAY!!  A great way to end the work week and get ready for a couple of days of gaming!  Mine will most likely be speed Civ IV on Monarch and Warlock MP with the Killer B's Sunday morning.

Dead State, Magnifico, and the latest build of Sovereignty will keep me busy.

Florida's motto isn't "The Cocaine State" for nothing, Star... ^-^

Me, I got my copy from Amazon, finally, of D-Day at Tarawa. That's pretty much my Christmas present to myself. My wife hates games so there's no way I'm getting one from her, and if I want one I gotta do it myself. I'm probably not going to have time to break it out, though, because my company's Christmas party is tomorrow night at a hotel near the museum district, and the wife and I went ahead and got a room, so the weekend likely won't hold any gaming.

On top of that I have two (count 'em) office parties next week with silly Secret Santa gifts, so I gotta figure out how to be a cheap bastard without looking like one two days in a row. So we'll be doing some shopping, too, and if my wife gets involved in shopping, that's an hours-long event.

Sorry, but I won't be in the Killer B game on Warlock this weekend...last minute decision. I'll post in that thread too. :(

mmm....what to play this weekend.

I've been having a blast with Far Cry 3. Perhaps do my F1 2013 Houston race (still not done it) and maybe some Endless Legend or carry on with my Civ V game - very similar those two are.

I think I'll have Sunday as a World in Flames day - see if I can't work out how to complete a turn!

I'm at a toss up over whether to get Tarawa or Omaha.  I enjoyed what I read of the AAR for Omaha so your complimentary AAR for Tarawa, whenever that is published, may be what helps me to decide which to get.   ;)

Probably Dragon Age Inquisition, maybe a bit of Destiny, and I really fancy dabbling in a good chit shuffler but I'm not sure which one.

I'll playing some more Tropico 5 that I got during the steam sale. So far it's the best of the series because of the 'Era" style play. You start you dynasty in the Colonial period as a Caribbean outpost of some Crown. You need to get up the support and money to break away then you can start playing with the Big Boys.  :D

More of the same humor, actually more better, as the previous games. More stuff to do. More stuff to build. Better tools to oppress... errr... give prosperity to your people. Bigger islands.

More FPC:RS if our new assignment comes in.  O0

Putting aside Dragon Age: Inquisition momentarily to play the Armenia campaign in Rome 2 TW. It is the toughest, fun campaign I think I have ever played since the beginning of the series. Very interesting part of the world to enjoy when I am not getting smacked around. I was hanging on by a thread last night with only one city left and two Armenian armies, but made a last minute resurgence and took back a couple of lost territories from the Persians. Tonight I will try to take back my lost capital from the Parthians.

If I fail I may start up Ryse: Son of Rome.

I think I may do some Far Cry 3 myself.  And some CMANO.  I've given up on the Antipope.  Even a monster Cat House Radar right next to his bunker cannot save him from a bunch of 30s vintage cruisers.  I think I'll sort of flip the scenario and have the local NATOnians from the nineteen 70s try to blow up an rogue Fatimid with a possible nuke and some missile boats in Algeria.  Just for show I can move the Cat House Radar down there with some other Spoon Rest Style electronics.  Sort of a belated Space Age Gear reunion.

And of course the usual WitPAE and boardgames.

.. maybe some RoF MP

This.

Had some fun last night on the ROF Wargrounds server, until it died and many called it a night, and the Syndicate Co-Op server afterwards.

I've now had a couple crashes in WOFF v2, which can be heartbreaking when you've spent fifteen minutes flying over to strafe a rail station behind enemy lines, narrowly avoiding archie and a flight of enemy planes diving on you along the way, to have it crash just as you're getting ready to dive and let loose.  :(

May finish painting the handful of minis I still have sitting out, primed and base coated, to prepare for assembling more next week.  It always seems like work to get started, but when I'm rolling it's a nice relaxing change of pace.  A few hours just fly by, in my own little bubble.

Working on my new AAR since last weekend; not likely to start posting it this weekend yet, however, as I want to get enough written first.

This'll be a narrative with lots of screenies, since I'm familiar with the game system and have some good ideas where I want to go with the 'story' (also how to improve it compared to the game).

On my occasional breaks from that, more Shadow of Mordor (likely), more 40K Armageddon (less likely), more Space Hulk: Ascension (more likely). Possibly more Ascension to the Throne, as I remain bewilderingly fond of that game.  :buck2:

well, i have one job offer, one pending and an interview next week - my ass is covered even in the worse case scenario

to celebrate there will be Elite, getting stuck into the mining aspect of things having earned 75000 in about 40 minutes last night

Rome 2 - in an effort to whittle down Mark Antonys strength i started picking off his allies one by one, he bottled it on the first 3 but has now taken a stand and decided to support Judea, and then dropped them the next turn - his central asian provinces all the way up to the balkans are empty - his main armies are all in Germany fighting there - its just a case of walking in there and sealing up the borders

Got inspired to start up a new campaign in DC Case Blue -- am giving the modded "redux" campaign a whirl. I had been trying to get back into WITE lately, but I'm once again convinced that DC Case Blue is just a much, much better game.

Time allowing (almost certainly won't), will try to get in some Combat Mission - Fortress Italy. There's some weird bug in Red Thunder that won't let me load saved games past 26% -- devs are aware of it so hopefully a hotfix is on the way. I still have plenty of mileage left in Fortress Italy and Battle for Normandy, so I can wait.

...every time I try to get away from WW2 -- it keeps pulling me back in...  :knuppel2:

Good luck UCG....looks like you're going to fall on your feet soon.  O0

Going to play mostly:

- Omerta: the japanese incentive....the enemy gangs can be real pain...the challenge is much bigger now than in the main campaign.

- Horizon....still wondering why Martok hasn't tried it (especially as it was on sale lately).

Cheers

PON PBEM.

I got sucked back into War Thunder and I'm now obsessed with grinding my Soviet T-34 tank line.  I managed to bag 4 PzKw IV Ausf 2s and a Marder III in one game last night.  Kills are somehow ridiculously satisfying in this game.  I think it might be the X-ray kill cam that shows the path of your shell, the blast wave, and the shrapnel through the enemy tank.

Wasteland 2.    I'm enjoying it so far even though the humour seems to be more of Bob's school than mine.

I just cleared the schedule for this evening so I'm going to continue working on the VASSAL module and playtesting for the "Expanded" version of Hitler's War that I'm making.

I also want to start dabbling (with more intent) in DarkBasic Pro so that I can perhaps one day start my PC adaptation of Patton's Best.

I also need to get my game started for the fourth round of our Blood Bowl VASSAL league tournament.  I've been sucking wind thus far but its been fun.

Hahaha, yeah, we use that twisted logic too.  "You spent how much on that crap when we're skint?  Fine, I'll spend just as much money on myself then!"

This weekend I will be investigating Eldevin, a Java-based F2P MMORPG, because I just cannot get Rift working via WINE no matter how hard I try.  Well, I can access the character select screen, so I suppose I could spend an hour or two admiring my pretty characters.  Playing the game's more fun though.

Almost certainly some Sins of a Solar Empire - an actual victory for WINE.  Possibly some Don't Starve because surely the multiplayer expansion must be getting close by now (not that I've checked).  Probably some Din's Curse because I finally bought it in Soldak's Autumn sale.

And finally, although he seems to have forgotten, Geek and I were going to play some co-op Interstellar Marines.

The AI is walking away with it so far.  The AI controlled UK is way out ahead of everyone else with AI controlled USA in second.  With an overall prestige ranking of 17th, UCG's Sardinia-Piedmont ranks amongst such world luminaries as Upper Volta and Wales.

I did get to ogle the games my wife let me order last minute for me for Christmas. That would include Gears of War and Blue Max, plus a Rock Band Manager game my daughter and I will no doubt get a kick out of, and a couple of others. I was worried this was gonna be a thin Christmas, but everybody's getting something fortunately. :)

May I say holy sh!t but the Blue Max FF board game is freakin' HEAVY.

Not too much gaming this weekend....surf is going to be epic.

But if I can, I'm looking at either Rome 2 (finally) or Europa Universalis: Rome.  Yes, it's time to embrace the Roman times.  Either way, a break from CK2 is in order.

Finished Shadow of Mordor this afternoon (and finished the next part of my new AAR project tonight.)

Was reasonably pleased with how it tied up some subtle loose ends between the Hobbit and Lotr (and in what happened when Sauron originally got the Ring.)

Was somewhat less pleased by the constant fanboi pandering with memorable dialogue elsewhere repeated in new contexts. Also, there was a strange Chekov's Watcher In the Water which was set up but never appeared. Maybe it's a coming DLC or else a side mission I never played: I couldn't figure out if building the legends of my three weapons was helping them power up in any way other than providing mithril to spend on them.

The sequel hook was certainly ballsy! -- which I won't spoil for people who haven't played or finished it yet, though the story ties up well enough as far as it goes, so don't worry about that. I'm on board for Shadow 2: Mordor Orcaloo.

Out of town for my Son-in-law's Probation Officer training graduation until today. Five hour drive each way. The good side is now I know a Probation Officer who needs to borrow things from me regularly. In case those Committing An Un-Natural Act charges come back around. ^-^ Anyway, I'm working on getting the Germans past the 5th Tank Army in DC: Case Blue, the Voronezh scenario. And Rome 2 because shooting baskets of scorpions at people NEVER gets old.

Spent most of the day on Civ IV, trying AGAIN to get a grasp on Monarch level.  My first attempt was around 170 Turns as Egypt.  The map was Small Pangaea with me and three AI's to a Time Victory.  Suryavarman was my immediate neighbor.  I built cities to cut him off from moving north and east along the coast while he built north and west.  Three times I had a Settler ready to drop a city only to have that blue bastard cut me off.  He managed to hem me in along my western border, directly against my capital.  The final straw was his take down of a Barbarian city I had been saving for my own on the far eastern tip of the continent.  Using our Open Borders agreement, he moved a force to take the city.  I tried, vainly, to assemble a large enough force myself, but, I failed.  Seeing as I was well on my way to being surrounded, I Resigned.

My next attempt also gives me Suryavarman as my immediate dance partner.  I am Mao Zedong.  This time, however, I bumped the size of the map up to Standard.  That seems to be working out a lot better for me.  Along with my repeat antagonist, Justinian I, Genghis Khan, and Mehmed II are all on the board.  I have kept up in the Tech race, trading landmark discoveries, for boatloads of lesser Techs.  My empire, while third in size, contains a dozen cities.

Until a handful of Turns ago, I had stayed out of the wars around me.  I control the entire western end of the continent.  Suryavarman is my eastern neighbor.  He has been using espionage to steal tech from me and disrupt my cities granaries and destroy buildings.  I got an event that allowed me to spend 50 Espionage Points to cause the destruction of three tile improvements and destroy several buildings in the city of Angkor Wat.  There was a 55% chance of discovery and negative relations, but, I figured we were in a good enough place that it wouldn't hurt too badly if I was caught.  Several Turns later, I found out I was wrong.

He came across my border and took out the defense I had set to guard my Oil Well.  Seeing as it was my only one, he effectively cut me off from producing anything modern to defend myself with, especially Tanks and Destroyers.  There are four of my cities along our mutual border and he sent stacks to menace each one.  Thankfully, I have been going against my usual strategy of building units as needed and had enough defense force to blunt the attacks.  A well timed Great Spy allowed me to start a Golden Age one Turn after the attack commenced, so I am reaping the benefits of that.  The downside is, I have lost my southern most city, Kushans, and nine units in its defense.  If I can continue to hold off the attack until Suryavarman will end this war, I should be able to regroup and fight another day.  But, it looks like he knows that a war of attrition favors him and I will not be allowed to make it out alive.

In any event, this will be the furthest, so far, that I have played on Monarch.  It's the early Twentieth Century.  I have kept up in Tech and economy.  Not sure exactly what I have learned that I can carry forward, other than, BUILD MORE TROOPS!!!

Good advice, although, in my defense, it was on a tile of land that I claimed through culture expansion, so, I had no choice in placing a city close to it.  In the meantime, things have taken a turn for the better.  When I had this war thrust upon me, Genghis, and his Vassal, Justinian, were at war with Mehmed.  I am far ahead of Genghis in tech, and offered him two Techs for him to declare peace with Mehmed.  I was hoping that one or the other would be inclined to join me in the war against Suryavarman and take pressure off me.  Unfortunately, it was no go from Genghis OR Mehmed.

Fast forward eight or so Turns, and I am busy denying reinforcements to the city he has taken from me, Kushans.  He wants to gather enough Artillery in the city in order to continue on his offensive.  I have killed at least six of them in the last few Turns.  It's still a battle I am going to lose, as I can't replace the troops I am losing fast enough.  Enter, a wedding.  Apparently, a couple, one of each nationality, Mongolian and Khmer, got married.  The parents of each half were unhappy at the union and an incident occurred.  I checked in with Genghis, and his price to declare war on Suryavarman was Biology and Electricity.  I was glad to pay up and the declaration has taken pressure off of me.  Enough so that I can start making plans for a counterattack.

In other news, I guess Mehmed was pissed at being put off, HE declared war on Genghis and Justinian, one or two Turns after the latter joined me in my war.  I was hoping numbers would bear in my war, as neither Genghis nor Justinian have Infantry.  Now, I don't know what is going to happen.  Mehmed is the most Technologically advanced of the five countries and I am afraid he will gut Genghis, or, at least, lessen the impact of his help in my war.  We shall see.  Oh, it's 1942, and we have a World War.

I've ran it on DOSbox a few years ago.  Was a bit troublesome putting the targeting cursor exactly where I wanted it with the keyboard cursor keys.  Used to use a small joystick when I played it in my youth that made it much easier.

I suppose it's just a matter of getting used to tweaking your torpedo enable points with the keyboard.  Lotsa of light tapping?

I was such a rabid RSR & Harpoon addict around that time.. I could nearly always get those big pixelated ship class profiles right on the copy protection check without looking at the manual.  Despite them being so blocky looking.  :)

Sorry JD...anyway I think Gunship 2000 did include the Comanche, he Kiowa, he Apache and several others too IIRC.

Flyable aircraft in GS2000 were the Kiowa, Blackhawk and Apache, if I recall. I think maybe with rank, the Comanche and Cobra may have been unlocked?

^^ Cobra yes; Comanche I don't recall.

A big limitation to that game, unlike the original Gunship, was the lack of maps. The original was procedurally generated, G2000 had like 4 or 6 maps period.

In answer to Gus' question about Shadow of Mordor: I'm thinking more than 10 hours but not much more. I didn't bother unlocking around half the side missions.

No side missions for you eh? I run around Shadow of Mordor trying to accomplish everything, the game is riotously fun

The Cobra is the one I forgot above...did not know that was playable.

49.75 for you Star. Plus the big orange horsepill surcharge. Can't be too careful.

Oh, I did some of the side missions until I got the impression they were only good for earning mithril, and didn't seem to be earning it fast enough to be worth the time sink.

Do the weapons level up apart from the runes? (And the abilities unlocked with leveling up Failon or whatever his name was? ;) ) I did love the descriptions for the weapon-legend missions.  :smitten:

(Also loved the ridiculously intricate braids on that blonde ex-pirate-princess, though I can't imagine that could have been easy to keep clean.  :o Also loved all the references to areas we normally don't get to play around in, in LotR games.)
