OK...somebody help me with this. Appears there's an auction on Steam where you bid with gems that you get somehow from stuff in your inventory?? Anybody doing this? Bids are already in the ten's and hundred's of thousands of gems. I'm left scratching my head.
Im going to bid one live Gus and see what I get.
I think the top 100 win each day. I could be wrong, but as long as your bid is within the top 100 you should win a copy of the game. After hocking everything I have, I only had like 1500 gems. I'm not sure how people have so many.
kids with no jobs have gems. the rest of us cough up the $15 for the Steam sale. O0
I was shocked that people would pay real money to buy those stupid achievement cards. I sell them as soon as I earn them. No amount of stupidity surprises me anymore...

How do you sell them? I have no idea? Are some more valuable than others?
Agree with Rayfer - I had no freakin' idea what that Steam auction thing was about.
What I did though, was work out that people might be looking for Achievement cards - and so the ones I had I put up for 30 pence each - sold one O0
As a side not (but related to JH's post) I've been looking for a Surface Pro 2 for my daughter on eBay. The reason was I thought they'd be going fairly cheap as they wre used. Apparently, not so. In fact - there's so many dumbasses out there, these things are selling for close to the price of a brand new one. Even without keyboards!
The stupidity of people the world over is astounding me nowadays.
(All this from a guy that spent £100 on an unfinished game...so I guess we all have our moments) :idiot2: ;D

Same thing, sold for pennies as soon as they turn up in the inventory

It is really a matter of supply and demand and prices seem to fluctuate, but on the whole, I would say the most I ever received for one item is .60 cents. On the average, I would say items sell for anywhere between .10 and .25 cents, again, depending on supply and demand. That being said, you can set the listing price as high as you want. There is a chart that shows you how many sold in the last 24 hours and for what price.
A year ago my son told me I could sell those cards in the Steam Marketplace, and now every time one pops up in my inventory I immediately turn around and sell it. I can care less about achievements or badges or leveling - whatever. Usually you get about eight to twelve cents per card, which isn't much but if you have a lot of them it will add up, especially when you apply them to mega-sales when games are only a buck or two. The most I got though was six bucks or thereabouts, but I don't recall which card it was. That was the only 'big' sale I've made, there.
Anguille, you just need to go to your inventory, click a card, then scroll down and you'll see a "Sell" button. Click that and you're taken to a screen where you set a price, but you'll see a graph that shows you how that particular card has sold over time. If you click 'Week' you can get an up-to-date idea of recent sales; then just set your price. Since Steam gets a taste you gotta factor that in (I think it's two cents, but when you're selling for $0.12, that can make a difference to a buyer). I generally go a cent or two under the average and they sell within minutes. The few that I've tried selling a cent or two higher than average just sit there and do not get bought.
I didnt know you could do that.
I just put a boatload of stuff on sale.
Thanks for the info, Banzai. I just put all my cards on sale and they sold immediately. Then I checked my email and saw that Steam had sent me a sale confirmation on each...and...every...card sold. 47 48 49 50 51 so far....sigh. Well, that's a couple of bucks in the Steam wallet anyway.
FWIW the gem thing goes over my head. I mean, I get it, but seeing as how I'll get 15 or so gems for each card and I have maybe one in my inventory right now - and most games are going upwards of 10,000+ gems...screw it.

Agree completely. This "auction" thing with its childish "gems" and "cards" is just making me impatient.
Steam Winter Sale, please... you know, where I can just use regular ol' money.
(Rumor is it's starting on the 18th -- hope so...)
Thanks for the info guys....

Is there a way to put them on sale other than one at a time? Is there a 'select all' feature to get it done where it doesn't take forever to do?
You have to set the price individually for each card, so doing it for a bunch of cards at once is not possible.
Since you've raised the subject, what exactly can I do with cards on Steam? I only mention this because it took me over a year to figure out what blue coins at Gamersgate are good for.
when you complete collections you can craft crap to use use in steam chat and add doo dahs and baubles to your page - thats all ive ever seen them used for
Sounds pretty pointless.
It reminds me a lot of the achievement system on Xbox Live. I never even registered for a Live account.
I'd much rather collect games than game achievements. :)
were do you find the things you put on sale?
1) Go to your Inventory page. If you don't have an envelope icon in your top bar, just highlight your user name up there (next to "COMMUNITY" I think) and then select Inventory, which is the last option in the drop-down.
2) If you have cards to sell, you'll see a thumbnail gallery under the Steam logo and drop-down (which says All Items, I think). Click any of the items there.
3) The card you click on will appear at right; scroll down to see more info. At the bottom should be a green button that says 'Sell.' Click it.
4) A pop-up window will appear. Under the graph you'll see several zoom options; click Week.
5) Highlight the graph with your mouse - just point the cursor at parts of it to get a pop-up that tells you how much that particular card sold for during that time. You'll see various peaks and valleys based on supply and demand. Usually I consider the highest price that it went for in the previous 24 hours.
6) In the "You receive" field, type in the amount you want to sell it for. Keep in mind Steam adds two cents to the sale, so if you're looking at a card sale price of 0.15, if you enter 0.15 you'll see the "Buyer pays" field say "0.17" - so keep that in mind.
7) Once you enter your price, check the checkbox where it says "I agree to the terms" blah blah blah, and then click the green OK, put it up for sale button.
Voila, you've just put something up for sale.
When it sells, you'll get the money added to your Steam wallet, and you should get an email telling you that you sold something.
I got all that but I can go back and change the price?
Yeah, go to Community at the top > Marketplace.
It will remove the card from your sale list and replace it in your inventory, so you can reprice it if you wish.
The Steam sale will begin on the 18th???

Where did you get this information?
Don't hold back or there will be a waterboarding.
Well, I did say 'rumored' to start on the 18th -- as allegedly leaked via some PayPal snafu --

How credible it really is, I dunno. Still, I need something to cling to. This idiotic 'auction' is just making the wait that much harder...
because you people need more games to buy now that you wont get to until 2018.

2018?
That's rather ambitious, don't you think?
I think the best for you.
I want to be like Scrooge freakin' McDuck swimming through a vault full of Steam games.
Doesn't matter if I'm going to play them. They are there, ready for my thrice-daily naked game dip in the pool, so to speak.
"naked game dip"....
and so began another Tuesday at Grogheads. :))

"naked game dip"....
In hindsight, I'm honestly surprised we'd not seen this phrase bandied about here til now.
When someone adds 'seven layer' to 'naked game dip' then it'll be a real party.
I only have 1800 Gems so it looks like I won't be winning anything lol
Edit: Well son of a gun, I snuck in a bid and got Infinite Space III. :)
