Title: Sentinels Of The Multiverse
Post by: Nefaro on December 22, 2014, 10:31:53 AM
The PC port of a favorite Co-op/Solitaire card games is being released today.  O0

http://store.steampowered.com/app/337150/

Insta-purchase for me.

Despite having the physical version and it's expansions, this would save the extra time it takes to track all the modifiers and setup/teardown when I want a quickie.  ^-^

Sweet... great game, just with cards there is some book keeping.... interested how this turns out!  No doubt, some DLC coming as well.

Price seems a little steep considering I just bought Acension with all the DLC for $10.  But I may grab it anyway if word of mouth is good enough.

It comes with an in-game manual and also a tutorial playthrough.  Those of us who are familiar with the tabletop game can skip the tutorial playthrough, but I skimmed through the manual just to make sure I understood the UI.

There is a lot of cards to keep track of but that's no different than the original.  Fortunately you don't have to jockey the life & modifier counters in this, which takes up some extra time when you're playing the actual card game.

But the digital version has a shortcoming in this area;  it doesn't mark temporary damage type immunities on the cards.  So, for example, you must remember the last damage type you did to Omnitron when it has that Adaptive shield-type thing in play.  I played against it with four characters and by the time I came back around on next turn, I had often forgot and ended up wasting an attack of the same type.

However, this isn't a total loss.  You can actually use a rather extensive "Go Back" feature that gives you a few options on how far back you want to replay.  So if you mess up like this, you can just start your turn over from a few recent save points corresponding to the beginning of a character turn.  This should also come in pretty handy when you miss or forget a good synergistic play between a couple characters on the same round.  O0

I also wish that we could rt-click on the "mini-cards" to get the full text version to pop up, instead of having to use a double left click.  Just personal preference, but the right mouse button isn't in use anyway so it would make sense.

Despite some niggles about the UI, it definitely remains the same SotM card game that gushes theme, has unique character powers/styles, and forces you to make tough strategic decisions.  My favorite solitaire card game.

Omnitron gave me a pretty hard beat down in my first 4-character game.

After my crushing loss to Omnitron, I'm gonna try a 4-character game against Baron Blade.

Think I have enough variety between that team of characters to go the distance.  Maybe.  :knuppel2:

I've just been hitting randomize and making a character switch or two.  Not used to playing with four characters since my tabletop games were always with three due to previous table space restrictions.

The basics are pretty simple.

The Villain goes first, playing his top card off his deck along with any extra stuff listed on his in-play cards.  The game mechanics & cards run him against you.

Next each of your heroes go in turn order.  They will be able to play one card from their hand and then activate the ability on one of their cards in play.  Simple turn order mechanics but each character's deck has many different cards and different styles derived from them.  This is where you'll be making lots of decisions on what to do.

At the end of the round, the Environment deck plays the top card of it's deck and does it's in-play stuff.  These are often detrimental but sometimes you can manipulate something in the game state in order to twist it to an advantage and use it against the bad guys.

And that's it.  I simplified the turn order, because each player/villain/environment also has a Beginning/End-of-Turn phase on each side of their draw & play actions but you get the point.  The cards read very much like CCGs, so expect to do a lot of reading about how each one changes the rules or adds an extra ability to it's owner.  The complexity is in the large variety of such card interactions each turn and how to best play your limited actions to good effect.

I know there are YouTube gameplay vids of the tabletop version of Sentinels of the Multiverse if you want a better impression.

There is also a new hex-based tactical game based on the same IP, called Sentinel Tactics, so don't get the two confused if you go looking.  I recently picked up Tactics too but haven't played it yet.

I bit.  Sop far I've played the tutorial (and had all 3 heroes wiped out) and started a new game, but am not doing very well in that one either.  It appears that if you've never played the tabletop version, the learning curve is pretty steep.  I'll stick with it, as I can see there are some interesting tactical choices to be made.  I just wish there were varying levels of difficulty.

It can get a bit easier when you use more characters.  But will still be a challenge, I'm sure.

The learning curve is probably due to the wide variety of cards.  Each character, villain, and environment deck his it's own unique cards so you'll be doing a lot of reading and re-reading of each card for awhile.  If you don't like interpreting CCG style card text then this probably won't be to your liking.  The turn sequence is very easy:  Play Card, Use Card Action, Draw.

It can be a pretty tough game, especially if you get hammered by some of the stronger Villain cards at just the right time, but if it were easier then I wouldn't play it as much.  I've been using four characters (the middle ground in difficulty) and winning about half the games, or maybe a bit more.  Even then I'll often slide into a win having been at well under 10 life on each character for a long time and a defeated hero or two.  Don't get disheartened when your characters are hanging in there at around 5 life, they can still last awhile once they get going.  They usually take a beating at the beginning of the game while still building up their Ongoing and Equipment cards, but at some point the tables will start turning.

Remember to use the Undo button option at the top if you mess up.  However, you can't go back to before one of your characters die.  I recently found that out after accidentally suiciding with Absolute Zero.   :buck2:  Still.. it's worth using if you made the wrong move.

Also use the lightning button at the top left if you need to see some of the temporary effects currently in play.  One of the developers mentioned that they also plan to add some graphical indicators to the mini-cards or whatnot too but that should keep you informed of temporary immunities, damage reduction, etc.

The tabletop game's rules can be found at http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/system/files/downloads/Sentinels%20of%20the%20Multiverse%20Enhanced%20Edition%20Rulebook.pdf (http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/system/files/downloads/Sentinels%20of%20the%20Multiverse%20Enhanced%20Edition%20Rulebook.pdf).

Unlike the PC gaming industry, almost all games in the tabletop industry have nice manuals.  And virtually of them are made available to the public online!  That's if you're willing to read, of course!   :D

First I'll say this one is an easy purchase -- one I'm glad I made in the heat of the Steam Sale -- even though I think they might have been a bit near in what was offered in initial content versus future DLC.  They seem to be interested in releasing it affordably, though, and a fellah has a right to an income...

The game is clearly about getting to know the heroes' native powers and decks and figuring out good ways to get them working together.

The game can be brutal depending on a certain measure of luck, but I really enjoy the way it subverts some hoary gaming conventions.  Citizen Dawn, for example, spawns hordes of minions who run in clever sets (Citizen Hammer and Citizen Anvil; Citizen Blood, Citizen Sweat, Citizen Tears; &c.) and my native tendency was to "clear the trash" before going after the boss herself.  The problem there is that, until she has three minions out, she's invulnerable.  I would have known this before I slaughtered her minions had I read her card carefully, but did not.  Let's just say that one ended badly for the forces of righteousness.

Best,

Jim

You make a good point.

The Villains also have their own strengths & weaknesses.  Make sure you guys read how the big Villain card operates, between when it flips and what actions it will take when on each side, in any given turn.  Then formulate your strategy from there because, as Cyrano says, it's not always about nuking everything as fast as possible.  You gotta use finesse at times.   :)

I'm looking forward to them adding more of the expansion content.  Still lots of superheroes, villains, and environments to be added to the digital version.

I have no idea how easy this one is to learn for a newcomer.  I have played card games like this here & there for two decades now so I'm not sure I recall how difficult it originally was for me.  I don't think it was terribly difficult to learn CCGs back then, but mastering is a whole 'nutha story.  I do recall having a lot of fun when I first started, and still enjoying them after all these years, so that can't be a bad sign.

Since you're familiar with tabletop gaming rulebooks, it shouldn't be much of a stretch.  The base rules are pretty simple.  Each individual card pretty much adds it's own rule/effect or changes an existing one when it comes into play.  So each game starts off very simple and becomes more complex as it progresses, with the steady addition of cards that specialize each player or character's strength & strategy.

While they're two different types of card games, Ascension is the easier of the two because it's one of the simpler "deck-builders".  With that one you play your whole hand for various types of points and spend those points adding more powerful cards to your deck and earning the equivalent of victory points, followed by drawing a whole new hand at the end of every turn.  That makes for fewer tough decisions overall.

You don't deck-build in Sentinels; each character has it's own pre-made deck which remains the same throughout the game.  With that one, each of your characters will have to choose & play one card per turn and then draw one at the end.  Although some cards can allow you to draw or play more per turn - a good example of how some of the different cards can change the game when they are played.  So with games like Sentinels, it's more about utilizing your characters' cards in synergistic ways to continually make the best out of the current game state for an eventual win.  In other words.. which card to play every turn that will best manipulate the game rules & effects to your advantage.  It's an easy concept to pick up, but you will often be grokking card text that reads like a paragraph of rules so if you're one who absolutely refuses to read game manuals then it may not be something for you.  However, if you don't mind a little card reading, the large amount of emergent strategies and situations will keep your thinker engaged with tough decisions.  ^-^

I think Sentinels is probably my favorite strategy card game, at least for solo or co-op play.  That's probably due to the huge variety, unique decks, and all the varied interactions those offer.  Ascension is just a casual getaway for me; quick & enjoyable but more like putting my thinkmeats on cruise control as opposed to the gerbil wheel.

The Rook City expansion for Sentinels just came out.   O0

http://store.steampowered.com/app/351390/

Quote
Rook City includes eight new decks to expand your gameplay options:

    Heroes: Expatriette and Mr. Fixer
Villains: The Chairman, The Matriarch, Plague Rat, and Spite
Environments: Pike Industrial Complex and Rook City

I suppose that means the Ancient Relics expansion is next, which is one of my favorites.  (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maddogdrivethru.net%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Ficon_e_ugeek.gif&hash=27160f6d0003060c37f4672506c3a3fb91eaabfb)

I thought about doing it for both but I don't really use my tablet to game.  Smaller screen size means I usually read on it when I'm out & about.  That would be the same concern for Sentinels - the text size on the small screen and having to zoom into the cards just to see it.

Nevertheless, it would be one of my first choices when being forced to wait somewhere in public for a long stretch of time (if I don't feel like reading?).  At home I just play it on my notebook, wherever I may be, and it's probably easier to see everything in play at once on it's larger screen.

I'm also not sure if they have the expansions out for the tablet yet..?

This has a big 'Freedom Force' vibe to it.

I've been getting more into Dice Masters lately, which by extension means cards, too. I've been addicted to buying expansion packs for both to get the cards/dice I need. This game seems like a lot of fun.

Are these all stock characters, or do you have the ability to create your own heroes?

I'm really not sure whether to buy this for my PC or my tablet.  Maybe that means I'll hold off?

I just did for both.

Both.... but the PC/Mac version was done right.  They have done an excellent job transitioning to electronic format and not always seen.  Electronic has the advantage over printed as the record keeping is a lot easier  O0

The characters are all pre-fabbed, along with each Location and Villain.  Each one has a completely different deck of cards with their own unique abilities on them.

They've probably needed insane amounts of testing to crush any interaction bugs between the crazy amount of different card interactions.

One of the reasons why it takes so long to develop each of the countless expansions and mini-expansions for the game.

So, those of you that own this think it has plenty of replayability?

^IMHO, not as much as the card game itself.
Inevitably, board games are a lot more fun because you play them with your friends around the table.

It has tons of replayability.  With all the villains and heroes plus different abilities and locations with random card draws, it is a great title and as much fun as the card game imho.

None of my friends are board or war gamers (they all prefer things like Bridge and Whist), and I'm usually a sucker for digital board/CC games, but this left me cold for some reason.  I played a couple of games and never came back.

Shattered Timelines expansion was just added to one of the most fun solitaire/co-op card games around.  :)

Before long, they're going to surpass all the real tabletop expansions I have.

I'll try SotM sometime again soon...got it over the Steam Winter Sale, played it for about an hour. That whole hour was devoted to that first battle/tutorial, which just went on and on and on. The damn bad guy kept healing himself and deploying that f'ing fortress of his, as well as chipping away at my heroes, so I could never 'get ahead' - it was an exercise in both futility and frustration. I thought the first battle as a tutorial should be relatively easy and not a pain in the ass. Either that or I just suck, but I pretty much followed the strategies the tutorial laid out for me, and still got my ass kicked.

I don't recall how the tutorial went.

Being a co-op tabletop game means most games will be challenging.  I don't think SotM is as bad as some others, but it'll usually push you down to the wire at the least.

Be patient and understand that you will very likely lose some games.  Once you become familiar with it your win rate will go up, but you should still expect it to be tooth & nail every time.  That's a big plus IMO, but your early games will be more punishing while you learn.

The game doesn't have much in the way of base rules, since each card pretty much makes up it's own.  Pretty much just the few phases of the turn and a handful of effect definitions.  Learn the basics and dig in.   :)

Here is a link to the tabletop rules.  May be easier to learn from than the tutorial.  You really only need to read pages 6-11 of the pdf.  Just some graphical card examples and a few paragraphs.  The digital game does some of that for you anyway.

Thanks, Nef, I'll check that out when I have a chance.

I DO like the game, it just surprised me how hard the tutorial was. Some people see challenges, other see paths of least resistance and go that way instead. I'll definitely go back to it, though, because it intrigues me.

Is there online co-op or multiplayer to it, by chance? Not that I'd have an easier time with a real person.

I'm pretty sure they added multiplayer Co-Op last year.

I've not tried it yet but would be up for it sometime.   8)

Yeah.  Cat, I'm no expert at it, but like most collectible card games (CCGs), the key to victory is all about syncing up the different cards so they feed off each other.  Just one example I remember from the tutorial:  One of your heroes has a fixed power (available from the start) that means every attack (by him or an ally) does +1 damage.  Another hero has an ability (Throwing Knives, I think?) that attacks 3 different enemies for 2 damage each.

Let those two feed off each other, and you have 1 hero who can dish out 9 damage in a single turn.  That's great for crowd control and let's all your other heroes focus most of their attacks/actions on hammering the main anti-hero and/or controlling other harmful cards in play (e.g., a Volcano card).  That's my recollection of how I won the tutorial.

It works A LITTLE better as a table top game, where you can scan all the Hero cards in play at once to see what works together (as opposed to having to scan individual cards), but if you play with the same heroes a few times, it gets pretty easy to remember the powers of a particular card just by the name/graphic which is available from the main screen.

Games like this are ALL about getting combos that feed off each other.  Think of it as the superhero equivalent of combining tanks, infantry, artillery, and air power!   O0

I think that's part of it, being a total newb to the game and not fully understanding/knowing the cards' potential.

That's definitely part of getting better.  Hell, there are some heroes/villains I've not played yet and they can pull some surprises until you become familiar with their specific deck & theme.  They're each unique & thematic, which is wonderful.

Aside from setting up combo synergies, another huge part of SotM strategy is prioritizing threats.

On any one turn, you'll generally have the Supervillain, his various minions & devices, and the Environment all trying to do bad stuff to you.  You'll have to prioritize the biggest threat and work on taking that out ASAP as the situation evolves.  There will always be other threats you'll have to let slide for awhile, and take a beating from them, but you can eventually catch up and do what needs to be done in order to win.

Always be aware of how the Supervillain operates and what it takes to defeat him.  Read BOTH sides of his card at the start (and whenever needed), because he/she will generally flip into the other state on a certain trigger.  Understanding how the Supervillain operates, and after seeing how some of his specific cards combo with that, will give you insight in how to go about defeating him.   8)
