This is a Kickstarter I will be backing! I have found the Shadowrun setting to be the most fascinating since 40K!
A Shadowrun campaign in H.K for Shadowrun returns? neat!
If only they'd unify all those separate products of theirs into 1 convenient package for the sake of modding and such.
Despite my Kickstarter allergy, I'll almost certainly jump in on this. I've really enjoyed both Shadowrun Returns campaigns.
I am hoping this version offers something similar to the Shadowrun Unlimited mod where you can keep playing the game with randomly generated missions.

Maybe if they continue to sell buttloads of these things, they'll eventually have it filled out pretty well. ???
Shadowrun Online has also been taking forever to progress. But it's just a 3D tactical battle browser game. This IP deserves a much deeper treatment than what we've had thus far.

I agree. This universe needs the Bethesda treatment. I think we will eventually get it. Shadowrun reminds me of where 40K was when the original DoW came out: not many video gamers were familiar with it. It took a few video game hits and the success of the "Black Library" to elevate it to mainstream status. Now we have studios fighting for the IP. I hope in a few years time we will see the same thing occur with Shadowrun.
Come to think of it, the Fallout universe went through much the same thing.
Three days!

The Warhammer 40K comparison is apt. I consider the two different settings similar in some ways regarding grittiness and the blending of fantasy with futuristic fiction.
I wonder what they will be adding to this one? Needs Moar Stuff!
I hope they go big with this one. DMS was cautious, but Dragonfall was more adventurous, so I hope the trend continues with the third campaign. And, who knows?, maybe this is an announcement for a whole new engine and not just another campaign. Maybe that is why they are going back to Kickstarter.
It's on!

They reached and exceeded their $100K goal in an hour and 45 minutes! LOL! They are already approaching the $200K mark. I backed it after loving SRR, and currently enjoying the more sophisticated Dragonfall. I went in at the Sprawl Ganger level that nets me wallpaper, an e-novel (I am loving Spells and Chrome (http://smile.amazon.com/Shadowrun-Fire-Frost-Kai-OConnal-ebook/dp/B00N2C2MFY/ref=pd_sim_kstore_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0BMSRJN37VDK63QPT92X), btw), and two PDFs: the base RPG, and the Alpha toolkit.
With pleasure, Harebrained! O0
Backed as well.
Update:
QuoteWowzers, you guys are amazing!
With your support, we were able to hit our first funding goal in less than 2 hours and just hit our third one. That means we'll be able to add Enhanced Player Controls, Animatic Scene Transitions and Racter, our favorite Russian, to your team!
The team is really appreciative of the opportunity you've given us. All we want is to do our very best work for an audience who wants what we're making. So, thanks for the (rapid) outpouring of support.
As you can imagine, that warmth means a lot to us in the chill of the Pacific Northwest. The team is trying hard to focus on their work but it's tough not to hit "refresh" on your browser every few minutes. Nevertheless, good stuff is happening in the studio and we're working on all sorts of things production-y things simultaneously.
For us, sharing the process of how we make our games is one of the best parts of running a Kickstarter project. We love to take you behind the scenes so you can find out how your magical cyberpunk dystopian (digital) future will come to pass. Tomorrow Tristin Ishmael, our Concept and Lead Environment Artist (and the guy who created that cool SR:HK teaser image) will give you a glimpse into his process.
In the meantime, we've been updating our FAQ all day and will continue our attempt to keep up with the deluge of communication we're receiving.
:coolsmiley:
Oh, and an interview with HBS here: http://www.rpgamer.com/games/srun/srunhk/srunhkint.html
Yep, backed as well. I still have to play Dragonfall yet..
Jesus, $302,142 already. make that $302,482 as I type.
$310,301 now. :) Go, go, go!
$313,673. I hope it gets to $700,000, I want that revamped Matrix!
I'd like the devs to actually deliver on their previous Kickstarter first (Golem Arcana)! :tickedoff:

Isn't that a tabletop game with something that looks like a digital inventory counting 'wand' thing for a gimmick? I fled when first seeing something that was run partially through a phone app and that inventory counter thing linked to it. Ri-dic-urous. People already piss me off when they start playing on their phones in the middle of something else, why would I want to promote such behavior? :knuppel2:
^It's a neat combination of using miniatures game and a tablet/smartphone for all the rules, dice rolls, information tracking, etc...
They shipped the rewards to the American backers a year ago, but still haven't even been willing to say anything about those of us in the big wide world :(

Ehhh. To each is own. Part of the reason I enjoy tabletop games is for rolling the dice and manually tracking info. Kinda defeats the purpose in my mind. ???
I didn't realize this developer was involved. Did they do the whole project or did they just do the software for someone else? Evidently the busy work was finished if they've already shipped the goods to some people. It's too bad some of these Kickstarters have such terrible shipping issues - I see complaints about it regularly.
^They've done the whole thing
Kickstarters seem to love screwing over backers in many ways.
Those of Board/Card games for an example just love screwing with people outside the U.S.
Shipping months after the products are already on a 50%+ off sale in stores, screwing over with shipping labels (incurring massive customs fees) and such.
I keep wondering each time why I bother with these KS projects, and each time I forget and back another :uglystupid2:
And we are now at:
$375,361!

QuoteHey everyone!
Overnight, we hit $300,000 and unlocked Gobbet's Personal Mission!! Woo hoo! Gobbet was the first character we came up with for Shadowrun: Hong Kong and we have a lot of affection for her. Can't wait to play out the run dealing with her backstory!
We would have LOVED to celebrate hitting $300,000 with everyone (especially our overseas Backers) but creating our new Kickstarter project and running it for the first day proved exhausting for our grizzled leadership, who fell asleep around 10pm Pacific. Going forward, we'll try and find some more... sprightly people to man the helm after dark.
And now we're closing in on $350,000, which will allow us to up our audio game... which'll make our Composer and Audio Director, Jon Everist, very happy indeed. We hope this will help immerse you even deeper into Hong Kong's atmosphere.
Cheers!

QuoteOur first Kickstarter for Shadowrun Returns funded at $400,000 in 28 hours. Can we beat that by 2pm Pacific time? Looks like it's gonna be tight!
Think we can get a quick surge this hour?
Help us beat the drum and get the word out by sharing the Kickstarter link anywhere you connect to social media (using the hashtag #shadowrunHK) - Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, your blog.... smoke-signals...

And regardless of the timing, we can't wait to hit that $400,000 funding goal so everyone can play with Gaichu. He'll be a really cool addition to your crew of runners. Gaichu has two Growth Tracks: the Red Samurai Track & the Ghoul Track.
Let's hope he gets unlocked!
Quote from: PinetreeI hope it gets to $700,000, I want that revamped Matrix!
Yeah, me too! The Matrix portion of the game needs some love. I hope if we get any additional goals, randomly generated missions get in there some how. I would love something like Shadowrun Unlimited.
$401,591! :D
QuoteThat means the (former) Red Samurai Gaichu is yours! Congrats on your new badass!
OKAY!
Our next funding goal is Enhanced Cyber! That means new cyberweapons with new animations and effects. Sure, it means other stuff like cutting edge cybertech... but come on! Cyberweapons? Sa-weet!
I really want enhanced cyber! Come on, let's make it to $450K!
$465,565 now. Damn that's impresive
And we have enhanced cyber! Woohoo!
Now at: $467,515 O0
QuoteYesss! Moar cybers!
You folks are amazing! Thanks for the opportunity to add more cyber-stuff to the game. Our designers and artists have been talking all morning about the things they're planning to do with your generous funding support. Glee.
And what's next?
Is0bel's personal side mission! Is0bel's parents were immigrants (more like refugees) from the Ethiomalian Territories and, as happens to many families escaping a brutal regime, they flew out of the frying pan and into the fire. Is0bel grew up in (and escaped from) the slums of Kowloon and knows her way through some of the most wretched places in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, her family still languishes in the depths of the sprawl. Her personal mission takes her back there - with you along for the ride.
Hope we hit the half a mil mark by morning. :-*

Yeah, I am wondering too. Again, my only wish is for some sort of skirmish mission generator for unlimited replayability.

QuoteAnother Funding Goal Reached! Who rules?
YOU!!!
What a tremendous few days, everybody. We can't tell you how energizing it is to see your outpouring of support for a project we're so passionate about.
And thanks to you, Is0bel's personal side mission will be included in the game. We really like how her character is shaping up and we can't wait to bring her to you.
Next up: Expanded magic!
With all this talk of cybertech and the Matrix, we wanted to be sure to add stuff that would benefit all the magic-users out there. For shamans, we have Shrine Spirits. These aren't your average elemental spirits who occasionally break from your control and go nuts on your party. These are great-form spirits - powerhouses who come when summoned, kick the butts point to, and then head home to pop a cold one. They won't break control, but they won't stick around long.
Phys ads (magical ninjas) and mages will gain access to Foci (that's plural for a focus item) - enchanted weapons and objects that allow adepts to deliver devastating magical attacks and boost a mage's power.
Apparently, actress Felicia Day just tweeted she is a backer, too. :)
I will kick in extra for a Felicia Day NPC. >:D

$556,834! New goal unlocked: better magic:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/webeharebrained/shadowrun-hong-kong/posts/1110067
QuoteWe’re now over $550,000 and have unlocked the Expanded Magic funding goal. What a great way to start the work week! Thanks so much to the people who have been out banging the drum for the project. It means a lot to us. And it helps everyone else too!
Okay, ready to add more play time to the game? We’re shooting to add Gaichu’s personal side mission to the story! Our former Red Samurai’s had a tough time of it, y’all. Rather than commit seppuku after becoming a ghoul, he dishonored himself by taking to the shadows. But he can’t just rot quietly in the corner - his former team of Renraku Red Samurai were also dishonored by his actions. Now Gaichu is hunted by a squad of highly-trained warriors who will stop at nothing to destroy their old teammate... and you alongside him.
The frenzy is starting to slow down, but with 28 days to go, I think we can make the $600K level and unlock the above (I hope so, it sounds like an interesting mission). The next goal after that is +$100K for enhanced matrix. That could prove to be tough to reach. I hope we make it though because the matrix is kinda meh in its current form. Fingers crossed.
Up to $576,666 now. I think it will beat $700,000 easily. On a related note, I started on Dragonfall:DC the other night, and played 8 hours without even realising it. Great storyline, feels like a SR novel.

Me too! I finished DMS last week and have since moved on to Dragonfall. I've been pacing myself because I want to complete a blog entry on DMS first and don't want Dragonfall confusing my thoughts, but I still managed nine hours so far! :buck2: Like you said, the writing in these games are fantastic. I particularly love the flesh and blood characters. They all feel so real with their personality quirks. Great stuff. :smitten:
Dev update:
QuoteHey there!
Kevin Maloney here, one of the HBS designers. I've been around since pre-production on Shadowrun Returns and have been cranking away making shadows for you to run in ever since. Today I'm going to talk a bit about creating Hub Quest Content and a bit about our goals for Shadowrun: Hong Kong.
We've learned that one of the best ways to draw you into the world of Shadowrun is to create a gameplay hub that reflects the part of the world you are in. It was really great to watch Trevor do this with the Kruezbasar in Dragonfall taking it from its first prototype of just a few streets to a dynamic piece of the Flux State with engaging NPC's and a host of interiors to enter. When we were making Dragonfall, we latched onto the idea of the hub being a character that was as important as any team member. We're taking that same approach in Shadowrun: Hong Kong, so you can expect your hub to be filled with interesting NPCs and a few mysteries of its own.
This time around, I get my chance to create the Hub Content - in fact, I've already started! So far, it's just a bus stop with a few crew members in their placeholder appearances plus a collection of triggers needed for basic hub operations, but I'm looking forward to building out the rest of it! So, how do you design a Shadowrun Hub? It all starts with the story - everything we create is in service to that. Once the writers - in this case, Andrew and Mitch - have a good sense of what's going to happen and why, the artists and designers work together to determine the size, look, and feel of the hub in the editor. Then, between us all, we iterate on it over and over, revising and tweaking until we have a layout with a real sense of place and clear locations for all the people we want you to meet.
Developing a hub doesn't stop there, though. In order to make it feel rich and exciting, there are shops to be filled with items, small quests to be developed, and side characters to be fleshed out. The hub will continue to evolve all the way up to the end of production, as we get in the last bit of polish.
I'm looking forward to taking our best ideas about what it feels like to be neck deep in the shadows of Hong Kong and turning them into a place for you to experience.
Cheers,
Kevin

That's neat! Thanks!
The 2.6 million trend would be...nice to achieve. LOL!
And another milestone met: $600K!
QuoteOur favorite (former) Red Samurai/Ghoul's personal side mission = UNLOCKED! Thanks so much for the opportunity to make it.
In case you were wondering about Wu and Racter's personal side missions, we assure you that there's a plan. At the basic level, their stories will be part of shadowruns we've already planned (similar to how Dietrich's background was tied into the Humanis run in DF). But, of course, there's more to it than that... aaaaand that's all we're gonna tell you. :D
Just rest assured, we're not going to create two cool characters like these and not give you the chance to find out what makes them tick! We're confident that when you experience the story, they'll feel fully fleshed out like the rest of your crew.
And now that you've succeeded in unlocking Gaichu's personal mission, it's on to THE MATRIX!
The Shadowrun Returns team nearly killed themselves to get our original Matrix art and gameplay in the game and we're still extremely proud of that effort. But just like Thorin and Company, we ache to return again and make things right.
Onward!
HBS
O0
The game is now at $606, 046, so it already has a good jump on this final goal. I hope we make it because the Matrix is bland at the moment.
I wonder if they will be adding any more goals after this, or are they just going to take any excess money and invest it in the game in general? I hope the latter. Don't want to get into feature creep.
Wow, $650,841 with 24 days to go! I am glad I backed at the $35 level because new bonus features have been announced!
QuoteWe have our plans set for the story we want to tell in Shadowrun: Hong Kong, but if we're lucky enough to reach the enormous sum of $1,000,000, we're gonna create an additional 4-5 hour Shadows of Hong Kong Mini-Campaign that takes place after the SR:HK story ends. Not only that, the Shadows of Hong Kong Mini-Campaign will allow you to IMPORT your high-karma Hong Kong character for a challenge only a prime runner could accept.
The Shadows of Hong Kong Mini-Campaign will come out sometime before the end of 2015 and will be free to Backers at the $15 pledge level and up. And you'll receive as many copies of the Mini-Campaign as you are eligible for at your reward level. For example, if you get 3 copies of Shadowrun: Hong Kong at the $150 level, you'll also get 3 copies of the Mini-Campaign.
Make sense? Good!
But no matter what funding level we reach, it's BONUS TIME!
Everyone who backs the project at the $35 Reward Level and above will get access to an AUDIO COMMENTARY TRACK from the Shadowrun Development Team. Hear the writers, designers, artists, engineers, and composer discuss how the game was made, the challenges they faced, and the fun they had while making the game. The audio commentary will arrive in an update after the game is released.
AND everyone who backs at the $35 Reward Level and above will also get TWO HIGH-RES DIGITAL POSTERS that, when placed together, combine into combine into a beautiful Shadowrun Panorama. The first poster contains a Timeline of Shadowrun History. The second contains a Glossary of Shadowrun Slang. Tell your friends!

QuoteThe Matrix Unlocked
Posted by Harebrained Schemes LLC
Huzzah!
Now that we’ve hit our funding goal for the Revamped Matrix, we thought you’d like to hear a bit more about what we’re planning. As we said, our goal is to evolve the gameplay along with the look & feel of the Matrix in Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Overall, we want the decker’s gameplay to feel like dangerous legwork, investigation, and hacking.
One of the ways we hope to achieve this is with increased opportunities for risk & reward. The more chances you take outside the scope of achieving your core objectives, the more potential benefit to you… and the greater chance of being discovered. Combat will still be a factor, but it won’t be your entire Matrix experience.
To that end, we’ve created a list of new Intrusion Countermeasures (IC) that we plan to add to the game. The new IC is intended to expand Matrix gameplay beyond simple combat mechanics by adding new types of interactions. All have been designed on paper and reviewed by our engineers and artists. Once they’ve proven out through prototyping and we’re confident in our ability to execute on them, we’ll share them in a future Backer Update.
As with DMS and DF, you’ll still break into a corporation's secure local systems during a run to gain access to a variety of tactical objectives but there will also be places in the story where you’ll travel through distinct areas of cyberspace to “sculpted systems” - distinct digital representations of their owners.
By revising the basic look and sound of the Matrix and creating small “set pieces” of sculpted systems, we hope to give you a better feeling of traveling through cyberspace (for illicit purposes, of course). Concept art for our updated Matrix environment, including an image of a sculpted system will appear in a future Backer Update.
Stay tuned!
I hope it feels more computer-y and less like a fevered dream.
This has been making the rounds on the internet lately. It is a fan-made trailer for a Shadowrun movie/TV show. We can dream, can't we?
Well done. :coolsmiley: It's fun to try and pick out the movies in there. Spotted Blade Runner, of course. :) There is also a clip from CDProject Red's Cyberpunk game (please come out this year, please come out this year). Also, Lawnmower Man, I think.

I'm really not surprised considering the amount they raised for the first one.
There is much interest in the setting. The IP holder would be wise to expand their offerings. I believe Topps owns it right now..? So their recent projects have probably been outside their normal comfort zone, especially with very little digital games in recent times.
Was just trying to pledge for it when I noticed Kickstarter demands my CC details and no longer accepts payments through Amazon Payment as they did just a week or so ago. :tickedoff: :uglystupid2:
BRING IT ON!!!
QuoteShadowrun: Hong Kong is on track for an important milestone at the end of this month: Feature Complete! That’s when the code for all our new features is working in the game. There will still be a little placeholder art remaining for some of the new interfaces we’ve added, but the underlying code works like it’s supposed to and everything will be in the hands of the artists and the designers after that. For the engineers, it’s all bug fixes, tweaks, and polish for the rest of the project!
On a different front, we’re pretty excited because as of today, Shadowrun: Hong Kong has its very own Steam page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/346940/), complete with our first set of screenshots and a teaser trailer
I really need to finish Dragonfall. Soon I will have Hong Kong

QuoteAnd, for our 3 year anniversary, we’re also offering Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut at blowout prices - $2.99 and $4.50!!! This is a great weekend for new people to see what all the fuss has been about.
That is a steal...which is sort of appropriate for this franchise. ;)
EDIT: And they even released another patch for Dragonfall:
QuoteRelease 2.0.9 contains a variety of Shadowrun Dragonfall - Director's Cut campaign fixes and general system fixes and improvements. Tis a great day! :D
QuoteMitch here, with just enough bandwidth to pull my head out of polishing the game to let you know that Shadowrun: Hong Kong has an official release date!During the Kickstarter, we estimated that we would release the game in August... and that's why we're releasing the game in August!
August 20th, 2015 at 10am PST, to be specific. On Steam, GoG, & Humble.
I still have to finish Dragon Rising! I am about 50% done. I just can't get myself to play it during the summer as the game takes place in a snowy Berlin! :) Guess I'll have to put Hong Kong on the back burner until next summer. ;)

With my home internet connection taking some time to come back online, the good news is that I've had plenty of time to complete some games without the internet or other games distracting me.
I've just finished Dragonfall on normal difficulty and I liked it. The story was good enough. The missions were a bit generic, but still enjoyable. Some additional ways to move through a level would be nice for Hong Kong.
I ran into a single somewhat annoying bug, namely that the game seems to freeze in the neutral turn (that pops up after you cast the spell) if you cast Haste on neutral characters.
Did they fix the other one with the server issues

Yes,
Chronicles (what was originally called "Shadowrun Online") works fine.
wasnt it bangkok, or berlin?
i got confused
I'm happy to see the release date on this, but I have to say that if I had to work in that office I would probably end up going on a killin' rampage.
Open plan offices suck!

Now you're attempting to confuse me. :buck2:
Shadowrun Chronicles is set in Boston.
Shadowrun Dragonfall (the single-player) is set in Berlin.
Game is released! Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/346940/), GOG (https://www.gog.com/game/shadowrun_hong_kong), and Humble Bumble (https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/shadowrun_hongkong_storefront).
Haven't even played it yet but hope to soon.
I was going to pick it up, but it seems a number of folks are talking about a "matrix mode" within the game and how it is implemented not being that great....what is that?

It never was in this series. The new Hong Kong one supposedly has a revised version of this part, but the screenshots look about the same as the old one to me. It's the "netrunning" part, but it's just a dulled down VR equivalent of the regular game mechanics.
The old Sega Genesis
Shadowrun had better netrunning mechanics, more representative of the tabletop, where you're VR self would travel through nodes (turn-based of course) and encounter various ICE and other "programs" that you needed to defeat with the programs you had purchased in true RPG style. It was like a randomized VR-themed dungeon run to loot corporate info (to be sold on the black market) and get out before getting brain-burned by the Black ICE protecting it, or dumped by similar security. I recall enjoying that part very much in that old game, along with the rest.
Hell, there was a freeware game some guy made that was more fun. Named
Decker, it's mechanics came from an old version of the Tabletop RPG. Basically plays as a Roguelike.

The netrunning in the new one just doesn't convey the separate VR theme well. It's just the normal game's combat with much fewer options and a glowy wireframe representation.
