Oh My God! This could be freaking fantastic!
Definitely. This looks more interesting to me than the last game.
Going to be a must buy for me! :)
some integration with beyond earth :)
Most likely a Day 1 buy for me....maybe even pre-order

In the game, you'll control a fleet of starships as you journey through the galaxy to complete missions, protect planets and their inhabitants, and build a planetary federation.
As you trek through the stars, you'll be challenged to expand your federation's influence and reach.
....maybe they should've called it
Sid Trek :D
Quite the intriguing trailer but nothing regarding gameplay. Still....it's exciting news.
I hope it' not just Ace Patrol with a black background.
Ha 'Sid Trek'...rolls off the tongue.
I have visions of a Battlestar Galactica Mod....mmmmm.....hot Cylons....
...nvm....missed (somehow :-[) all the screenshots in the Gamespot link....

No. I don't. From the description, it sounds more like you have a fleet of ships that travel around space to combat threats against colonized worlds. I don't see anything to suggest that there is any building, colony management, or combat on planets. I want Civilization in space, somewhat along the lines of Emperor of the Fading Suns. Start with a planet and then explore. Land forces on other planets and colonize and build. Done properly, a game like this would simply be epic.
That sounds like GalCIV to me.
Sounds like Star Trek to me 8)
The thing to remember about Sid Meier is that he makes the games he wants to play. As it stands, his games also turn out to be games other's want to play. He puts out a dog so rarely it hardly counts. And critics aside, his games are consistent best sellers.

Yeah...definitely too early to tell what this thing will be. Regardless, you know I'll be the first to buy it. :crazy2:
Anything by Sid gets my interest. Until I booted up the old DoS Conflict in VietNam and saw how awful it was graphically, I had been awash in fond memories of hours wiled away at that and countless others of his games...but...
1: Ace Patrol isn't a bad game, but it's far from epic. It's PtW back-end is regrettable.
2: Yep, Sid is a brand now, and I too want to know who's developing this.
3: Related tangentially to #1 above, this cross-platform stuff gives me the itch.
One cheats himself to ignore a Sid Meier release, but I'm not as excited as I thought I'd be. I held my breath briefly and thought it might be Sid's read on "Star Fleet Battles" -- the turn-based bit is awesome -- but I'm actually more geared up re: Battlefleet Gothic.
As for a true space 4X, isn't that field a wee bit crowded right now?

Might not be a bad in a heavily modified form for the tactical ship battles. Though I think those will likely be something new.
From the game screenshots, it just looks like a hex-based 4x Civ IN SPAAAAACE! With customizable ships and tac battles for them. Which is a big plus IMO.
It would be pretty damn easy to make Civ V IN SPAAAACE. I just hope they don't get that lazy over in Sidville.
^I did not get Beyond Earth because I too felt it looked too close to a Civ V in space.
With more, better details released I am pretty sure I will be happy with this. If the planet to planet conquest model is remotely similar to Star Wars - Empire at War this could be excellent.
Did someone see customizable ships?
I think they mentioned customizable ships in the article.

Yup!
Could be good... Or it could be Civilization 5 with no terrain and space ships instead of ground units. Have to wait and see what game play features they introduce. Because, frankly, Space 4x games these days have introduced a lot of different interesting innovations.
Okay... another game to drain my bank account. :P
Sorry but I'm with Jarhead and tgb on this one. A scarcity of detail, it will be ready soon suggesting a very short development cycle, and it will be available on iPad. Pfft. This is going to be Ace Patrol in space. Hardly anything to get worked up about.

Because they make more money by splitting the 4x concept into several parts instead of an all-in-one game.
This doesn't sounds very promising to me, and given that I haven't been impressed with the recent Firaxis offerings, I'm not too hopeful.
I think the only way we are going to get the game we want is if we do it ourselves.
Step 1. Incorporate
Step 2. Kickstart Overlord of the Dying Stars
Step 3. Get some interns that we pay in sandwiches.
Step 4. ???
Step 5. Profit!

Sid Meier's Starships, an "adventure-driven strategy game" for iPad, Mac, and PC. It's being developed by Sid's studio Firaxis. Here's publisher 2K's official description.
Take command of a fleet of powerful starships in this adventure-driven strategy game from legendary designer Sid Meier. Travel to new worlds, completing missions to help save and protect the planets and their people from dangerous Space Pirates, to powerful Marauders and other hostile factions.
Your ships travel through a randomly-generated galaxy, using diplomacy to collect allies and combat to subjugate enemies. The ships are "fully customizable" and the galaxy is full of missions and quests.
It might be epic, but it probably won't be too big. According to Polygon, Starships will be download-only — the lack of a boxed retail release suggests that it'll be a $10-$15ish game like Ace Patrol Pacific Skies, the WWII turn-based dog-fighting game Firaxis released in 2013. There's nothing wrong with that at all. We loved Ace Patrol around here, and I personally played it for months.
Hmm...that's discouraging information.
Indeed.
I do like JH's new Shining avatar, though. Disturbing in a quiet way, complete with Scatman's feet.
Kinda like the newest update on Starships.
They lost me at "available for iPad". Sorry, any game designed to work on a tablet is going to suck on the PC. Will possess too little depth by necessity as it has to be able to be processed on my kids IPad...right?

I don't know. You can get some really good strategy games on tablets these days. Tiller games are a prime example. Of course the tech that they were developed for 15 years ago is in many ways less powerful than iPad or other tablet technology today.
I think Sid Meier Ace Patrol is great. I have it both in PC and iPad.
I must admit I have both Ace Patrol games on Steam and on my iPad 2. I enjoyed them both. If this is Ace Patrol IN SPAAACE...well, I will probably buy it. Hopefully it's a bit different than that, but I'd get it.

I have to begrudingly side with you and mikeck too, after getting excited initially...Starships is not the space 4x I am looking for. If combat is solid and the price is right I will get it, but not to play a 4x. I'll get it for a quick starship combat fix, like the Ace Patrol games for simplified air combat.

It is rapidly getting to the point where ANY game developed for the I-Android is a no-buy.
I'm afraid - as unfair as many may think this is - that I pretty much stay away from anything developed for iPad (or Android for that matter) and moved to PC.
I'm not a hard grog - but whilst the tablet type games are fun (I kind of like the cartoony gamey look some have and they're quirky) - they are literally fun for a few hours at most. Ace Patrol I loved - for a few hours. It got tired quickly and sunk into oblivion.
To be fair, I've bought some big ticket games over the years that have done the same thing.
I really dont get the pad/droid affair at the mo......the only games i play on mine for more than about 5 minutes are puzzle games, card games and word games...everything else would rather play on PC
I think Android games are fine...on Android. If I have the full power of a desktop PC available I want to play something a bit more involved.
Hmm, kind of agree with the disappointing news comments. I'm sure I'll buy it but it does sound like a 'lite' game. Pacific Skies didn't hold my interest very long at all.

Cool, thanks for posting! Gotta find time to watch it this weekend.
Very interesting stuff...my own initial thoughts:
1: Certainly glad to hear of Sid's level of involvement...still one creative bastard, he...
2: Definitely not nuts about what, based on this short pair of clips, looks like a cheat with the asteroids. I respect the fact that Sid loves maps and sees them as the heart of games...he might well be right in most instances...but answering the question of "how do we do maps in space" with "asteroid belts as terrain" makes me sad. I'll ignore the astrophysics of it...really more the proportional size-to-space ratio issue...and just say it doesn't make me thing of space fleets.
3: The campaign game is shaping up interestingly although, and I listened twice and am still not sure, do I take that you only get one fleet? That would be weird too...
In the end, I guess I'm still looking for a reboot of the old Interplay interpretation of SFB, but will stipulate the market there might be a mite narrow.
Best,
Jim

I received an email, but it doesn't really matter. GMG doesn't release Steam codes until the game unlocks. If you still haven't gotten an email, go to GMG/my account/games/Steam and you should see it listed.
This hands-on preview has whet my appetite for SMS!

Thanks tgb...odd though, I usually get regular messages from GMG.
Used my GMG code for a pre order copy. Was gonna buy anyway so a few bucks off is nice.
Fug it, I've added it to my Steam cart. I just gotta figure if I want to buy that and the other two in my cart (Witcher 2 and Slammed!).
Witcher 2...well, I have the 'director's cut' for Witcher 1, though I've not played through it yet. Slammed! is an interactive fiction piece by Choice of Games. They make some excellent stories that are well worth the few bucks they cost.
Just got an email from GMG that Starships was added to the "VIP Room" for $11.39...gonna have to see if my 25% off voucher will work in the VIP Room ...it does not, now I don't feel so special :(
Got my GMG voucher too :) And since those Stardock titles are not due out for some time I can go forth.
I've never pre-purchased a game before it's release. This "waiting" thing will be quite quaint.
It's just like the old waiting.
Like waiting for 'hare' pie as a teenager?
Much shorter wait than that.
Thank Christ.
Yeah tell me about it.
Pre-purchase made. The wait won't be a big deal. It's not like I don't have anything to do in the meantime. :)
Just pre-purchased as well :)

Certainly raised eyebrows; but it's been said that some extreme remote rural types are less species fussy.
I just assumed he was referencing Hasenpfeffer, maybe in a nice pastry puff shell?

It most certainly is. I was trying not to be too disgusting in public. I guess I shouldn't second guess myself in the future and just go all out, then.
Pre-purchased last night from GMG as a VIP special. Looking forward to the game unlocking tomorrow. :)

I saw that myself and couldn't tell if that meant that GMG ran out and has to get more, or they just haven't been released yet. No worries, though, because at this point I won't have time to play until after work anyway.
I too am [im]patiently waiting.
Looks like GMG has a direct download option...is it possible to just download and play now and then activate on steam later?
I doubt it, since the game uses Steamworks as DRM.

Just tried that and it took me to the GMG page that describes Steam downloading. :buck2:
Steam itself says that game doesn't unlock for about an hour yet.... maybe that's why? No early loading.... ???
It is out for the iPad now though....
I already got my key from GMG.
It's still locked on Steam though.
Live now.
I'm downloading.....
I got an email with my Steam key once the game unlocked. Downloading now. :)
Got my key as well and downloaded. Lots of people (myself included) are getting crash to desktop right after seeing the 2 sets of logos. On my PC (Win 7 64-bit), I also see a beginning cinematic of a planet. I found that hitting ESC right when I see the planet gets me to the Menu without a crash. Hope it works better than this once I get into it...
...also seems running the 32-bit version .exe gets it up and running to the menu without crashing.
Running ok for me. So far a very different feeling game and it does have that 'one more turn' feeling for now. Not sure how much re-playability is here since there must be a limited number of missions. I'm having fun for now though!
Gripes: Can't rename ships or planets!? And looking at the install folder I don't see anything that could be modded. In fact, there isn't much in the install folder at all!
I also have my key but will have to wait until this evening to play. :tickedoff:
A nice tip, you can press the F11 function key to jump from fullscreen to window mode.

"Full screen" is also just a full screen window, so you can alt tab out easily.
I loaded it up and started a game on Hard, since I had been reading how easy "Normal" difficulty is. I played one battle where I was given a 29% chance of success, and I did lose one ship before winning the battle with a squadron of fighters(!)
At the end of the battle the ship that was "destroyed" was magically returned to me. Is that WAD? Seems to me that if you get your destroyed ships back after a battle, there's no way to lose the game.
Other than that it was pretty much what I expected it to be based on the videos over the last few weeks. I don't regret the pre-order, but might have if it was $30 or $40 instead of $11.
Yeah, I just lost a ship in battle and the other one survived. But for some reason I had the destroyed one back after the battle. Also, do planets always have missions even when you clear them? I cleared one and went to go back and the same mission was active! :o
Is it as bad as the Steam threads / reviews are saying it is?
^Are the threads that bad? Oh dear. Was going to fire this up later...
Yes the no perma death on ships is WAD. Not sure why they went that way but there ya go.
Yes missions will keep appearing until you absorb them into your empire. Not always the same mission though.
It's a light game. Fun and it has some depth but it's not Civ in space.

It's just the normal Steam winner brigade noise.
It's got a 73 on Metacritic from the professional reviews, and only one review of a 3 out of 10 on the player side.

I think part of the problem was everyone expecting this to BE Civ in space.... even though that was never said in any promo material.
Right from the start this game was described as a spaceship combat game where you had minor empire building. The general populous just ignored that and decided that if Sid`s name was on it, it HAD to Civ in space.
It`s fun for what it is, a light spaceship combat game with minor empire building. It`s all about trying different spaceship configurations in different combat situations and see what works.
As for Beyond Earth, it was always setup to be Colonization in space not Civ in space. Again people just projected what they wanted it to be instead of just playing it for what it is.
All this is just my $0.02 of course.... what the hell do I know.
+1 to what Barthheart says, it's a fun little game. Play it for what it is. O0
and another +1. Good little game. A light romp into space combat.
+1 again. Yes, it is a fun, lite game. The forums on Steam are questionable at best. When I read them I'm reminded why I don't like MMO games.

You have some logical points there and I agree with you to a degree. There is a segment of the population with a long history with Sid and a ton of time and money invested into his games. I just can't be only speaking for myself when I say while we appreciate some of his new ideas and game mechanics but sometimes we want the old brought back to life with today's technology.
What I mean by that is I remember exactly what a 1967 Ford Mustang looks and feels like. When I look at a 2015 Mustang GT I see a bit of his ancestor built and styled into him. I immediately know this is a Ford Mustang. I can't do that with some of the stuff Sid is coming out with these days.
Ok, so if we're limited to one fleet....why am I seeing multiple fleets in use by my opponents? Is this supposed to be play balance in lieu of better AI? I'm confused.
My first impressions of the game amount to "fun but underwhelming". The gameplay is fun, but the lack of chrome in any fashion (renaming planets or starships, the redundancy of ship designs, leaders, etc....) is disappointing. I'm quite aware this was never intended to be a 4x game and I'm fine with that. But the initial "feel" of the design is very much that of a tablet game. As someone who has shelled out hard cash and countless hours for literally every single Sid Meier game ever made for the pc....I wish I were more thrilled.

The AI doesn't get multiple fleets. It just looks that way during their turn resolution because they zip around a lot using the hyperspace bypasses( or whatever they are called). I didn't know we could build those at first.
Yep it's a light game that is probably more at home as a tablet game. I have both. :idiot2: Mostly because I want to see what can be modded on Steam... if anything, and it's nice to play on a large screen... it's making my iPad2 chug pretty hard sometimes.....
Guess I need to build me some of them hyperspace bypasses O0

Well....after a few hours spent playing SMS, I've come to the conclusion that the damn game IS fun and retains at least some of Sid's famous "one more turn" magic. While too often the ships may look the same, you have a lot of latitude in what you slap on them, which opens up various strategies. For my initial games, I've chosen the "stealthy" route with overpowered torpedoes. So far so good. And the combat is very visual, which is nice. I can watch my torpedoes close on an enemy and manually detonate them at the point I think they will do the most damage. So....room for improvement, Sid, but maybe a B- so far.
Jesus, I've been so busy this latter part of the week I totally forgot about SMS until just this moment. Installing on Steam now. Durrrrr...
Given other competing good games that are available, this sounds like a game to pass on, unless it gets a significant re-work.
My quick review on Steam:
Sid Meier's Starships......an out of the blue title that generated a lot of anticipation and more than a little wonder at what the package would bring. Now it's here and while it's not socks from Grandma at Christmas, it's not quite the game you were hoping for either. Good but not great, worth the price but perhaps unworthy of the legend that is Sid Meier.
This is not a 4x game nor was it ever advertised as such. It's more Ace Patrol than Civ, something fun that won't require huge chunks of your life to complete but something you can come back and jump right in to. While lacking in chrome, this game retains Sid's famous "one more turn" quality. The game is fun to play and the deeper you get into it the more strategies become apparent. I started it, played a few turns and stopped to do something else several times, then fired it up again after dinner and played it straight thru to midnight, surprised at how much time had passed.
The lack of chrome, i.e. the ability to rename your starships and planets, the lack of any leaders, not nearly enough starship models, etc..... is disappointing but not a show stopper. Hopefully, given the track record of Meier products, this will be addressed in future updates. I hope to see steam workshop support added as well to let Sid's passionate fanbase come up with their own ideas. This is the kind of game that cries out for a Star Trek/Star Wars/BSG mod from some basement genius and I can't wait to see that happen.
Over the years I've bought and played every single game Sid has ever made. This game won't add to the legend that is Sid Meier, but it won't detract from it either. You'll get more than enough gameplay from Starships to justify the cost, you just won't be sitting around 15 years from now saying "remember Sid Meier's Starships?!?! Now that was a game"!
Very good and spot on.
O0
You know, I've been giving some thought to some of the criticism I've read about the game that seems to be aimed at Sid Meier personally - i.e., he's "gone soft", he's "sold out", he should "hang it up", Starships is "not worthy of the name", etc.
I've been in this hobby long enough to go back to his first titles like Hellcat Ace and Floyd of the Jungle. Seems to me he designs games to fit whatever he's interested in at the moment. He's 25 years older than when he started developing Civilization, and not the same man. I know as I've grown older and real life has gotten more and more in the way, I no longer have interest in flight sims or strategy games that require reading a 300 page manual, and I'm guessing he doesn't either.
I went back and put together a list of his games, and most people would be surprised to see how few fit the pattern of what people think of when they hear the name "Sid Meier". I've only listed the games on which he is credited as lead designer - not the branded titles.
Oh, and here's a fun fact - the only PC Civilization game on which he was lead was the first.
Spitfire Ace 1982
Hellcat Ace 1982
Floyd of the Jungle 1982
Chopper Rescue 1982
NATO Commander 1984
Solo Flight 1984
Kennedy Approach 1985
F-15 Strike Eagle 1985
Silent Service 1985

Red Storm Rising 1988
F-19 Stealth Fighter 1988
F-15 Strike Eagle II 1989
Sword of the Samurai 1989
Covert Action 1990
Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon 1990
Sid Meier's Civilization 1991
Sid Meier's Colonization 1994
Magic: The Gathering 1997
Sid Meier's Gettysburg! 1997
Sid Meier's Antietam! 1998
Sid Meier's SimGolf 2002
Sid Meier's Railroads! 2006
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2008
Sid Meier's CivWorld 2011
Sid Meier's Ace Patrol 2013
Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies 2013
Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 2014
Sid Meier's Starships 2015
I've left off CPU Bach for the Amiga since that wasn't really a game.
33 games - of which 2 could be classified as deep 4X games (I'm giving the first Colonization the benefit of the doubt). Compare that to 6 "light" casual/mobile/facebook games, 6 war games, and 9 flight and sub sims.
Chew on that next time someone brings up what is or isn't a "Sid Meier game".
^ Sid's the guy who loves what he does so he never has to work a day in his life. And you hit it right on the head....Sid has said before that he makes the games he wants to play. More often than not, they are the games I want to play as well.
tgb that is well stated. Knowing that now makes me understand why I love to hate the guy so much. It's because he makes the games he wants to play not the games I want to play.
Thoughtful comments.
If I have a regret with this game (yeah, I bought it, you guys are the worst), it's that it leaves me wondering what Sid could do if he were tasked to do his version of SFB.
Then again, maybe he doesn't want to play that...

Let me just say, what a wonderful list of games. The first ones I played were F-15 Strike Eagle and Silent Service. I had such a blast with both of those. I think Silent Service is still my favorite sub sim, at least if you could get it to work now. And I didn't even remember Sid did Red Storm Rising! I was just thinking about that game 3 or 4 days ago, and wishing there were a modern port. I played it over and over.
Civ, the original Civ, has to be the most influential computer game ever. And Pirates? Wow, for a 1987 game, that was a game!
I think it's true that he isn't the blazing innovator he was in the 1980s, but he has made quite a few excellent games since then, and very few you could call dogs.
Gunship too, eh? One of my top games ever. Didn't know he was involved with it at all.
NATO Commander was the first one of his I ever played, on my granddad's Apple IIc.
It was a precursor to Crusade in Europe, Decision in the Desert, and Conflict in Vietnam, all games I absolutely loved playing (on the Apple as well).

These are RTS games. Lol!
What's interesting also is that his 3 most innovative titles all came out within a 5-year span: Pirates in '87, Railroad Tycoon in '90, and Civilization in '91!! He's done a lot of other good games, but I don't think any of them broke new ground as decisively, or brilliantly, as those 3.
I also didn't know that he wasn't the lead on Alpha Centauri. That one was little more than a brilliant spin-off of the Civilization idea, but the idea of creating unique factions that played so differently was not something that had been executed half that well by any other 4X titles, with the possible exception of Master of Magic.
Brian Reynolds was the lead designer of both Civ II and Alpha Centauri.
I have to say I like the game. Some of the "wonders" allow you to implement tactics that completely change strategy. For example, the wonder that allows fighters to fly through asteroid debris. After getting this, I could mass a group of fighters, hide behind asteroids, then wave assault a target, and disappear back behind the asteroids. Great fun.
But I do see that replayability is somewhat limited, at least for me. The game gets somewhat "samey" by the 2nd or 3rd play through.

The wonders in the game add a lot. I won a game, then turned around and started another to try different tactics. I embraced the Romulan way, creating fast, stealthy warships loaded with torpedoes that packed a wallop and short range weapons for knife fighting. Early on I grabbed the planet that allowed me to build invisible torpedoes. So I've got overpowered, invisible torpedoes....hell yeah!
I bulldozed two competitors in short order, then as I was eyeing my nearest and baddest enemy....he built the wonder that makes his starships invulnerable to torpedoes and declared war on me!
That's where I'm at now. Be it luck or good AI, I admire the tactical challenge that's been thrown my way. By the end game, you may well have a maxed out fleet with maxed out everything, but before you get there you have some design choices to make, which, if you're smart, will include trying to grab up the wonders that allow you to optimize your choices.
I just won a Wonder victory on Normal, and it was surprisingly easy. I built nothing but cities and Wonders and was able to cheese out a win by first conquering the Marauder home world, and then buying and selling in the marketplace until I had enough metal to purchase my final two wonders for the win.
AI was disappointing on both the strategic and tactical level. At one point I was at war with the yellow faction, but they never attacked any of my worlds, despite being a single jump away. In a couple of battles, not only did the AI not use the asteroids for cover, but they actually flew into the middle of a spread of torpedoes.
I normally suck at this kind of game, so for me to win so decisively my first time out says something. I'm willing to give it another shot on Hard, because I did enjoy most of the time I spent with the game, despite it's drawbacks.

I find it odd that my laptop, which runs XCOM nicely on medium settings, can't run a PC port of a tablet game smoothly even in windowed mode. For what it is I find Starships to be is a fun time waster - hopefully it will improve with updates and mods.

I enjoy the combat. There are lots of things I would like to see improved and it's not a deep game, but I own other deep games. I'm good with just being fun for a change.
Yeah. The nerd rage for this is just...creepy.
I've actually had a tough time figuring it out; it wasn't terribly intuitive, but then again I didn't spend but maybe 30 minutes with the game. I figured out enough but I pushed my luck and ended up getting my butt kicked in the second system I entered. I rage quit. But I will be baahhhck.
It's definitely not intuitive and there are definitely bugs, but it is not a steaming pile to get enraged with like some over at Steam have been doing. Awkward pun intended.
Played some more last night...still had fun, but less fun. I don't want to sound like a 9 year old but the graphics are piss poor. A tutorial of some kind is needed too. Gameplay itself can get repetitive, and diplomacy is really weak. So...if I paid 25.00 or more I would be pretty pissed, but I paid around 11.00. I guess the price point should have prepared me. It's fun, but I don't see myself playing much more, especially with Homeworld and Endless Space waiting.
That's IT...Gus nailed it for me.
1: Yep, the tutorial lack is weird and bothersome.
2: Far more significantly, with all the 4X out there -- certainly Sid's own iterations not least -- what is the elevator pitch for this game? I don't see it. Four X-ers (I'm truthfully not one) have a set of expectations that there's no way this game could ever have met. Ship-to-ship tactical guys (I'm one of those guys) are going to find this ludicrous (I do). Who's this game for?
I don't hate it. I'm not mad at it. But it certainly doesn't make a lot of sense to me...

It's not a 4X. In fact, Firaxis went out of their way to say that it isn't one. It has some lite 4X elements, but it was never pitched as anything but a casual turn-based tactical combat game.
I know all that, but that's why there's all the rage. It's never sunk in because of its look and pedigree.
What IS the elevator pitch for this game that seems to be falling with a thud between two stools?
Think I'll buy it in order to play during my travels...just for relaxing purpose.
...and its on sale for $10 for Steam's 2K 10yr anniversary sale (http://store.steampowered.com/sale/2k_publisher_weekend/).
It's niche seems to be what Anguille is planning on - to play casually on a mobile. It really does not feel right on a PC. It just can't compete with bigger games. If I want to play for a short time I can play a mission of Homeworld or spend a half hour with Endless Space. Starships isn't bad but it's an awkward ugly stepchild.
@Gus...yeah, I think so. That's why I enjoyed Total War: Battles...perfect on the go.
Does someone know if the game can be played by touch on a windows 8 tablet (I have an acer aspire p3)?
Bought the game for my iPad and it runs great and is a lot of fun. I'm really enjoying it.

Installed the game on my Acer Aspire P3 (similar to Surface) and it does respond well to touch on Windows 8. Going to play this during my trips. :)
