Title: Armoured Commander Alpha [roguelike]
Post by: spelk on February 13, 2015, 06:40:32 PM
Found this over at Temple of the Roguelike forums, think its still heavily in development, but its a WWII Tank Commander roguelike!!!!!!
Seems to be based on the board game "Pattons Best".

OMG tried it out.  It is Patton's Best.  I love that game and want a computer version of it.

Most interesting. I've been glancing over the PB rules all week, thinking about having another go at the game. Now this...  :o

Excellent.  Still designated as an Alpha so I'm guessing he's gonna add more.

So far,  it's just an endless mission. You try to survive as long as you can and earn points. Game ends when you get knocked out. No continuation for surviving crew.  No different eras and different Sherman models.

So negative JH!

I've been screaming for somebody to do this for I don't know how long and I'm really quite impressed with the programming that this guy has done; he has the shell of Patton's Best game in there.  Yeah, it could definitely use a real UI/GUI and there's a good number of things from the boardgame that aren't in here yet but it's a great start.  I've drawn and redrawn all of the graphics for PB for the VASSAL and Zuntzu modules and have those images.  I'm going to reach out to this guy and see if he's at the programming ability level of actually using graphics or if not, if he would mind if we start to find someone to collaborate on this thing that he's started in order to get the graphics in there.  Of course there's Hasborg's copyright issues to worry with as well but that needs to be looked in to and confirmed.

By the way, speaking of graphics...when are you going to pull that poster off of your sigline JH?  That thing takes up half a screen.   :))

The only thing I would add is that the roguelike community pride themselves in not needing graphics to appreciate a game, hence the squillion ASCII roguelikes out there. Nowadays it is popular to embelish the roguelikes with decent graphics and many of the new one being released are all being jazzed up with eye candy.

The dev might be amenable to help souping the game up with a decent graphical front to it, but don't be surprised if he really wants to keep it all based in pure ASCII... its kind of a RL "thing", from the beginnings etc.

Yeah, I'm seeing that now that I've looked at the site and the whole concept of what the "rogue like" actually means.  Still wouldn't hurt to reach out to him I suppose.

I've had some epic gaming experiences with ASCII only games. I wouldn't rule out anything because of the presentation. In fact previously high end graphics have forced me to not experience them, simply because I can't afford the hardware to run them!

Screw the Berlin Interpretation!
http://www.gamesofgrey.com/blog/?p=403

I know some RL gamers are fanatical about their support for the ASCII character set, but most play both and offer ascii or graphical tilesets. Theres a whole slew of new games nowadays coming out with really stylish and good looking graphics (The Nightmare Cooperative, Sproggiwood).

Some of Jeff Lait's (Zincland) 7-day Roguelikes are brilliant and are mostly ASCII based, I wouldn't have missed out on them, or Brogue (both ASCII and tiled versions exist)

Just discovered this thread - I think this led to ArmCom being featured on Rock Paper Shotgun's Flare Path after ArmCom was spotted on the Tactical Wargames FB page, so thanks very much!

I've recently updated ArmCom to Alpha 5.1 (downloadable at http://www.armouredcommander.com/ (http://www.armouredcommander.com/)), which adds a longer campaign calendar as well as the full range of Sherman variants. Now there's still a ton of features that are still missing or only partially implemented, but I continue to make steady progress.

I should mention, however, that while ArmCom is inspired by Patton's Best, I'm not looking to make a PC version of the board game. ArmCom will be moving beyond the scope of PB, but I hope that it will be an enjoyable and exciting game nevertheless. The choice of a Roguelike format is intentional, but if you're hankering for a graphical version, the source is available under the GPL, and something like PyGame would make it relatively painless to develop a hex-and-counter branch version!

If you try the game out and discover any bugs that haven't already been mentioned, or have constructive suggestions, please feel free to email me or post on the Temple of the Roguelike thread at http://forums.roguetemple.com/index.php?topic=4460.0 (http://forums.roguetemple.com/index.php?topic=4460.0)

Yes.  I'm watching!

I still have a freshly punched copy of Patton's Best sitting on one of my game shelves, yet to be played.  Actually, I could say that about many of them on that big shelf.  ;D

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for making the source available- this may be the inspiration that I need to actually start to learn (beyond a few basics) on how to code things for myself.  Having done the graphics for the VASSAL module for Patton's Best, I have the entire games contents redrawn already; I just need to learn to actually program the stuff.  I have flirted with python (hey, stop it!) some time ago so it's not completely foreign to me.

I'm going to be on hiatus for a couple weeks, but after that I'm back to active development. I've already started on the crew experience and skill system, which should make longer campaigns more engaging and make it hurt a bit when you lose a skilled member of your crew.

That's really a critical element in Patton's Best so yeah, that would be awesome to see that included here.

Oh, and I know that I'll never get in to programming.  As many times as I've looked in to it, read some stuff, built the "hello world" intro codes, my time is just too limited and I get too easily distracted with other projects these days.  BUT, I do have all the graphics for PB and I could just as easily make a unique set that would not infringe on any copyright; should you or somebody else (hint hint) ever want to add a graphical element to your code.

Armoured Commander is now on Alpha 7: lots of additions and bug fixes since I last reported in. I feel like the combat system is really starting to click, and although the campaign layer is still a little flat, that's the next area that I'm going to do some work on.

http://www.armouredcommander.com (http://www.armouredcommander.com)

Some recent changes and additions:
- your tank can get bogged down, more likely in muddy conditions
- experience points and skills for crew members
- panzerfaust attacks
- AI behaviour of AT Guns greatly improved, their facing is also now tracked
- wound system for crew has been improved
- counterattack scenarios
- some sounds and animations, more to come
- morale levels, pinning, stunning, and breaking for enemy units

I just grabbed the most recent build of this and *wow*, there's a lot of new features and it looks really good.  Hey, if you play OOTP or other text based sports sims, well there's no difference here in how this one works.  If you played Patton's Best at some point or have heard of it and had an interest in it, you owe yourself the favor of grabbing this and giving it a try.  It would be interesting to see some people here post screenshots of their high scores and to see who can live the longest.

You've obviously got some talent as a programmer.  Have you been programming for some time?  Was Python easy enough for you to pick up or if you had to do it all over again, would you suggest a different language?

I got through the first map unscratched (we lost 1 squad to friendly fire and 1 tank in the platoon that was ambushed by a Pak38 camped in a building).  This is a really polished design.  What last few things are you looking to do or add or is it simply tracking down any remaining bugs that it may have?

And what's your next project?  :)

Great job with this one, I'm very impressed!
Title: Re: Armoured Commander Alpha [roguelike]
Post by: Rev_Sudasana on July 25, 2015, 07:03:53 AM
Thanks! I've been fooling around with Python for a few years. I was lucky to have tried to make a couple roguelikes before starting this one, however, so I already had some techniques in mind for how to make it happen. The roguelike library I'm using, as well as all the other libraries available for Python, make programming much easier than it used to be.

Short term I want to develop the crew into a more character-based system, where each crewman has their own traits and personality, and have them pipe up during the game. It'll hurt more when you lose one after getting to know them, but that's the nature of the job. Long term, adding more campaigns including playing as a German or Russian commander.

After that I have a couple ideas for future projects, but since this is a hobby for me it depends more on how much free time I have than anything else!

When it comes to roguelikes graphics aren't really an issue for me because usually the gameplay is so deep and immersive..no graphics in a book but we still read them:)

I do however draw a line at ASCI graphics purely because it's to taxing mentally for me to work it out.

Just spent an hour or two with it..really enjoyed it.

I played the hell out of Patton's Best, and this is a near faithful recreation of the game.

One thing I would like to see is a more robust system for awards and decorations. Besides a Purple Heart, it is very difficult to get a medal. I made a modified system, purely point based, to qualify for a decoration..and this encouraged aggressive movement and attacking to rack up the points. Good stuff!!

Edited to state that I just finished downloading this, and played the first day. The author should consider getting this on Steam...he would make a fortune!

Add some more features and get us to care more for our men and I agree..would do well on Steam for the right price. Realyl does show graphics aren't everything for a wargame..immersion can be created other ways. Just like we don't need pictures in a novel..we just need something to spark the imagination.

C'mon folks, don't let this drop down to page 12. This is a real gem of a game, easily the finest shareware game I have ever played that wasn't named Open Transport Tycoon.

Just a liiitttle better graphics, and this is a solid, exceptional game. Even now the gameplay is excellent, and like any true Grognard, I am ALLLLL about the gameplay.
