Going to take a break from Civ this weekend. Fired up Europa Universalis IV last night. Trying Lithuania again. Looks like I've already screwed the pooch. Denmark and Poland have started grabbing the Orders, Teutonic and Livonian. Muscovy has grabbed most of Novgorod already, too. We'll see how it goes from here.
You have no idea how long I've been sat here on a frikking iPhone trying to share a video for the Friday thread!!! :tickedoff:
I'll get you next week
Anyway...... There will be shooting con in a CMBS pbem when he's back, there will be shooting jomni in a CMbS pbem when he bothers his ass to set it up, there will be map building in CMBS
An elite rare run or two, and some airland battle
Hanging fire on pillars until those bugs get sorted
Just bought golden realms for aow III so there'll be some of that too
And Jack daniels
Was it better than the Foo Fighters?
Pillars of Eternity, Ironcast, & Battlelore:Command for me
Extra long weekend here with Friday and Monday off.
Normandy 44 PBEM with Cyrano.
BA2 Kursk Expansion.
Finish up a Tropico 5 sandbox game.
Build a new sliding door for our onsuite bathroom.

It was the black motorcycle club - I thought you'd be impressed
I can't decide between Worlds of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, Age of Wonders 3, Galactic Civ 3, or something else. :D
I won't have much gaming time this (long) weekend, but what I do have will be split between:
VoidExpanse. Finally launched on Steam. I started a new game last night and felt right at home. I plan to get a lot further into the storyline this time.
Star Ruler 2. The documentation, such as it is, for this game is woeful so I'm having a bugger of a time figuring out how to play it, but I'm enjoying it anyway. Lovely game.
Planetary Annihilation (hopefully). I finally have a 'puter technically capable of running it, but it keeps freezing a couple of minutes into a game. :(
Age of Wonders 3. Continuing to test the Linux build.
Headed to the inlaws for Easter, so no gaming for me this weekend. But I may try to type up an AAR for Command.
Deep into Pillars of Eternity. It's keeping me from my Wasteland 2 game. And then there's....too much gaming goodness these day.
Ps. MD....good choice of song to kick off the weekend.
I think that i am going to continue to play the campaign of Paraworld. It's a nice game with great music. I didn't really know what to expect, but it's a fairly classir RTS game (build base etc). I have never been really good in these type of games (too slow)....we'll see...
Also want to start a new game of Endless Space...
Beginning a Pict campaign in Attila - Total War. BA2 Kursk lurks in the shadows as does the upcoming expansion for AoWIII.
Despite having recently bought (and barely played) Pillars of Eternity, Cities Skylines, and Star Ruler 2, probably only one game I'll play this weekend -- the peerless OOTP 16.
Also, MLB season starts this weekend, at long last... :D
^YES!! Except my team will suck. And I hate A-Rod with the heat of 1000 suns. But being a Jet fan I am inured.

If your team is my team -- the superannuated, geriatric NY Yanks -- then yes, you're probably right. Tanaka's starts will be fun to watch, if nothing else. ...assuming he can stay healthy...
^Yessir. I am putting all my eggs in Tanaka's basket. I hope I will still be watching in May.
Diapers and Burping Babies. It's a highly interactive game. I did discover last night that reading the in game text of Pillars of Eternity out loud is actually a soothing DLC for the Baby Crying expansion pack. :)
The spring training game I caught against the Rays, the Yanks had some strong young talent on the way up. So did the Rays. Anyway, POE until I can't stand to look at the green circles anymore and an Easter Egg Hunt with 2 grandkids and Jim Beam. Who cares where the damned eggs are? :coolsmiley:

Possibly some HPS/tiller games in PBEM more likely DCS and Attila and boardgames.
I'm still on the table with grand strategy: 7 Ages and maybe Pax Romana if I decide to end the game around the Medieval era. Speaking of medieval era, I also just received MMP's Kingdom Of Heaven so running the first few crusades, in order, may be on for future weekends too. ^-^
All kinds of PC games yet to play, but I'm still on taking a break from digital gaming. Yet I still picked up Eastside Hockey Manager(EA), KeeperRL (EA), The Spatials, and Tropico 5 on their sales in the past couple weeks.
Lots of Management & Building stuff there. Maybe my purchasing habits are trying to tell me something. ???
Probably some Combat Mission, SMAC, and King of Dragon Pass (old but gold!). I will be upgrading all my CM games with mods. I've recently been playing around with different combos. Aris' mods are just great particularly the explosion mod, and the dust and smoke one.
It's bank holiday weekend here and rather than playing, I'm fighting the lurgy
I have been absolutely knocked onto my fat arse with what I guess is flu as every muscle in my body from head to toe is aching along with a massive headache and a streaming nose.
Ok - too much info. So I've spent most of today lying on the sofa watching crap I recorded ont he telly and I'll be hitting the sack soon. I'm hoping I'll be better tomorrow - but likely this will go on until Sunday and perhaps Monday.
I'm not often ill...but when I am, it tends to hit me hard for some reason.
Anyway - enough sympathy searching - happy gaming you groggies :coolsmiley:

Drink some beer JD. Then you won't know what you're feeling and won't care anyway.
sunk 3 hours into AOW 3 to get a handle on the basics, wanted to remain good - ended up evil as i didnt realise i was attacking good guys, poor choices of spells - but at least i learnt - back in tomorrow, thoroughly enjoyed it though

I had something similar last month too. It lingers. Take care of yourself.
No gaming for me this weekend. I've gone to the UK to unravel the mystery behind Bawb's mustache!
That, and it's his 40th wedding anniversary do!
So what is the key to Bawb's mustache?

So far, he's been very cagey about the whole Luftwaffe thing. I think the mustache may be keeping the FW 190 in the back garden, however. I haven't been able to twist the truth out of him yet despite multiple pub trips.

Wholly agree there.
Hope it goes smoothly.
Moving is terrible. Renovating and gutting your house is worse because it lasts months. So, chin up JH! At least your move will be over within a week.
Playing some StarCraft Mass Recall (mod of SC1 campaigns in SC2 engine), and maybe some more retro gaming with MOO2.
I'll spend much of the weekend wagering on the battle with Bawb's 'stache...God save both sides...
Already heavy into gaming Easter weekend, actually:
1. First scenario of "Boots on the Ground". One of those games that is better than its developers in some ways deserve. Frustrating.
2. Couple games of "Tiny Epic Defenders". If you haven't grabbed this one, do.
3. Re-fired Talisman digital with the boy who has, at last, warmed to it.
4. Barth has promised me more Norman-style punishment.
5. Determined to grind through the rules to "Here I Stand".
Best,
Jim
"Cyrano"

Well, I spent a few hours the other night working up a narrative AAR for Deadnauts, only to discover that due to it being a roguelike the game doesn't save before the first mission. So when I stopped for the night, and came back later, I discovered I had to roll up entirely new characters.
This bit.
This afternoon, while loading some things onto the new Surface Pro 3, I had the time to try again, this time making sure I started the damn mission before quitting for supper. Opps. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO QUIT AT ALL! (Short of a completed mission anyway.)
Normally this wouldn't necessarily be a problem, since by all accounts the missions for each campaign (4 randomized missions each) are fairly short. For purposes of doing a narrative AAR... this bitterly bit.
Thus I have mostly learned today not to try doing a narrative AAR for Deadnauts. I shall try to overcome the irrational hatred I now have for the game (which isn't at all fair, I know), to play it sometime later.
Jarhead,
Good luck on the move.
Played so far:
Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power
Fantasy Wars
Cuban Missile Crisis
The first two are on sale on GOG. I picked Cuban Missile Crisis up on sale at Steam. Very cool alternate history RTS (the cold war went hot during the Cuban Missile Crisis) based on the Blitzkrieg 2 engine.
Jason, have you voiced your displeasure to the devs? They do read the Steam forum as well as their own.
I finally was able to start grooving on the book The Long Ships (about Vikings) and that has put me into a Crusader Kings 2 mood. I might try playing it sober tonight, just for a change of pace. ::)
Also looking at Scourge of War if CK2 doesn't grab me.
If Bawb's moustache has kept Mrs. Bawb happy for 40 years, then it must be the best ride in country. And Dredd anti-inflammatory meds like Ibuprofen/ Motrin are better for the Flu than Tylenol or Aspirin unless you have a serious fever, then Tylenol will do better. It's a pain in the ass when I'm sick and have time to play then but don't feel worth a damn to play. And that's when the phone rings everytime I lay down.
Thanks Slash. I've been interspersing Ibuprofen with Paracetamol.
I actually feel a lot better this morning. Sore throat is still there and the aching muscles and a few sneezes but the streaming nose and eyes and headache seem to have done one (gone). I hope I haven't spoke too soon there.
Good luck on completing the move JH. We've discussed moving in the past and then we've shook our heads and thought "What were we thinking?". For a start there's all the people waiting in the wings to chip away at the money you're spending...then there's the dreaded packing and the dreaded move and the dreaded unpacking. Nah...you have to either NEED to move, or you dislike your surroundings. Moving for the sake of it is never an option.
Bob - congratulations on 40 years with Mrs Bob. Enjoy yourselves. I've got 22 years under my belt :smitten:
Well I can't hang around here gabbing all day, for I, too, am about to venture forth to witness the fabled 'tache! If anyone wants me to conduct any black ops missions while I'm there, PM them to me.
Pretty good times with CK2 tonight.
For as long as I've owned the game, I have always started on either high middle ages or late middle ages. Tonight was the first time I picked Viking Age. I started with Jylland, which is modern-day Denmark and man alive, who knew playing a Viking could be so much fun?
All this time I've been spending trying to unite Scotland in the late middle ages when all I needed to do is start as a Viking in the 800's and go take that bad boy. Nice! And it seems that the appearance of the game changes a bit with the earlier start- the menu screens look a bit different unless I'm crazy.
Overall it's been a pretty hectic but fun experience. There is no way I'm going to be able to hold this whole kingdom together, but for now I've got a pretty nice spread of land. Money's a bit tight, though.
Awesome video, OP
I'll be getting my nose bloodied with Battle Academy 2: Kursk.
It's like the developers know exactly how to mess with the player. Regardless, the scenarios are good. I'm just sad knowing that there will eventually be an end.
I'm tempted to delay my next Attila campaign to fire up the BA: Kursk German campaign...tempted...
Huw get pictures of Bawbstache!
I want clippings for my genetic engineering laboratory.
If DARPA coukd reverse engineer the Bawn 'stache.....
Photographic evidence has been obtained! Will upload tomorrow. :D

The UI art is specific to your religion, or possibly culture in a few cases. IIRC, there are different ones for Pagan (which includes viking), Christian, Islamic, Dharmic Indian, etc.
UI art may be a simple thing to many, but I've grown quite fond of the games that have customized ones for each various faction. Gives them more flavor. O0
Impressive that Bawbstache stood still long enough for a photo to be taken.
Panzerde and I smothered/subdued him!
Impressive! Hopefully Bawbstache was able to regain its composure and put its monocle back on for the picture.
The World awaits.
So far, didn't play much (busy with visits, preparation and cleaning). Did however install Star Ruler (the first one) on my new desktop and played the tutorial. It's been on my laptop for years but i haven't played it yet.
Started a game as Castile in EUIV with the Eldorado DLC this morning. Started playing around 8 this morning and the next thing I know its after 1 in the afternoon. So far I like the changes to exploration. No more babysitting your exploration ships or worrying about your ships getting to much attrition and sinking on their way home. Everything was going well until England got me into a war with France. War started out ok, until 32k French defeated a our 60k (Portugal, England, Aragon, and me). At that point I quit without saving.
After that debacle, I started browsing the Steam workshop for Cities: Skyline mods and got pulled down that rabbit hole. Tonight I'm going to split my time between Cities and some Distant Worlds.
Not sure how much gaming I'll get in tomorrow but its going to be some combination of all three, with maybe some Command scenario work and beta testing thrown in.

There was no chance of rattling the Bawbstache for long! Shortly after Huw and I wrestled it into the picture it was back on the dance floor, prancing about to the Proclaimers'
500 Miles. Honestly, it was a majestic sight!
I played Star Drive until 02:30 Saturday morning and then again in the afternoon. Great game that didn't get much love when it came out. I'm hoping the sequel will be just as good especially since the strategic layer is now turn based. O0

Nah, I'm just venting my vitriol here. I know it isn't fair to complain about this; the game has a particular design that works for its intended purposes, and creating a screenshot AAR just doesn't happen to be that purpose. I have nothing AT ALL bad to say about the game. (Perhaps because I haven't played it long enough to have much to say about it yet, since my AAR attempts keep imploding. ;) But I stress,
this isn't the fault of the game or the devs.)
Haven't played anything yet myself either because of the holidays and family etc. Maybe later tonight? Still on the fence...Attila/BA2...
...to be honest reading about Bawbstache is just as entertaining.
Oh god hangover. :(
Bob has just delivered painkillers, hurrah!
Bob if you're reading this I'll be down for breakfast in a minute when I remember my name
I think I was spiked. Someone put alcohol in my beer!
Man alive, what a mess. So I was at war with no less than 6 different people. I had Scotland, a couple of counties to the SE of Denmark, Norfolk, Devon, and I think that's it. Scotland completely fractured with two separate independence movements, and also the counties SE of Denmark declared independence. I got my butt completely handed to me.
We're still fighting it out but there is no way I can with at this point. I bled myself dry putting down the first Scotland fight and I have nothing left for the second. Plus, those troops are badasses. I'm not going to surrender, but I'm going to let them bleed themselves out a bit and spend some money besieging everywhere nonetheless. At the end, though, I'm going to be back with good ole Jylland and that's it. I'll be lucky if I can hold onto that at least!
Fortunately no mustaches were harmed in these revolts. ;)

I'll let you know Bob. The plan is stay in Newcastle on Wednesday 22nd July, (probably at The Quayside Premier Inn), and start the ride on Thursday, stay overnight in Berwick Upon Tweed at the 100 mile mark and then do the next 100 miles to get to Edinburgh on the Friday.
I then need to get to Glasgow for Saturday to see my mum for her birthday.

Just heard from Doug - they're in Detroit now ready for the last leg home.
Once again, this weekend proved that one should spend as much time as possible hanging out with fellow Grogs. We had an absolutely wonderful time hanging out with Bawb, Mrs. Bawb, their family and Huw. Bawb's anniversary party was very well attended and a lot of fun! You know it's a good party where a number of the guests are wearing kilts. It was really a privilege to attend. Huw and I had a good natter and knocked back a few pints. Some of Bawb's long-time gaming friends from Newcastle were also there.
Bawb and the 'stache took us on a whirlwind tour of Newcastle that was amazing. Newcastle and Northumberland are amazing. We'll be back for another visit, that's for sure!
Now we just need to get the rest of the way how and somehow get motivated to work tomorrow.
Didn't have a ton of time for gaming this weekend, but what time I did have was spent going old-school:
Played some Ultimate Mod 5 in
Birth of the Federation. I've currently got a nice little Federation campaign going right now; I have 3 growing colonies, have just founded a 4th, and have good relations with two minor races. (The Tholians hate my friggin' guts, though!)
I've also started up a Mercian game in
Medieval Total War's Viking Invasion campaign. They're not the most difficult faction to play as, but they're more or less in the middle of the action (kind of like the Byzantines from the main campaign), which I usually enjoy. Lots of different paths for conquest -- choices, choices... ;)

Outstanding! Glad you guys all had a great time! And again, congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Bawb on their 40th anniversary!!
^^+100
Was an absolute pleasure - sorry about the rain on Friday...........today has been clear blue skies and 22deg C.........
Come back soon now, ya hear?

I think I was spiked. Someone put alcohol in my beer!
I think the Bawbstache did it! He confused us with his dancing and then tried to subdue us with alcohol.
Bawbstache is mesmerizing. Like a roofie.
So far...completed mission 2 in Paraworld which was fun.
also played about 60 turns of Endless Space on normal with the tech guys (the Sophons)....boy this game really doesn't make it easy for me to like it....i am last in every single field (AGAIN) and the Vaulters are taking one of my systems (and i don't have a lot of them) with their fleet. There's a lot i like in this game but the way the AI cheats (or am i really that bad?) makes me wanna drop it. Don't know if i should stick to this game or start a new one...i've played a lot 4x (which makes me think i should be able to manage one on normal difficulty) but this one gives me a lot frustration >:(
i have comfortably sunk into CMBS and all that entails
3 PBEMs, Con, a fine gent from Battlefront forums who designed a map he wants testing, and Jomni which is just getting underway
loving all 3 and their different natures.
Bradleys ****ing rock
Started on Dying Light. I'm liking it so far, but there is no way in Hell that anyone should ever attempt to play this with a mouse and keyboard. Then again, I consider all parkour/action games to be made for controllers, so you may feel differently. But this sucker involves a lot of controls and what can be fast, fast, fast game play that needs you to react NOW.
Started a Lombard campaign in Attila...three hours went by in a flash. Great fun!
Man, I was looking at Atilla trailers the other night and I want it pretty bad. But with the DLC's you're looking at at least a ~$65 investment. Not that that is life-changing money, but these games always, always, always go on some insane sale at some point. I'm trying to hold out until a July 4th sale or something.
I don't have to have it now, but I want it now, if you know what I mean.
So it's been EUIV all weekend as Lithuania. I'm in a good spot country and economy wise. Unfortunately, I am allied with Poland, so I can't attack and absorb them, and I failed in my effort to form the Lithuanian-Poland Commonwealth. Muscovy is pretty big and allied with Great Britain. Crimea should be easy to swallow, except they are allied with the Ottomans. So, I am trying to build infrastructure, i.e., building buildings in provinces that modify Manpower, Trade and Production modifiers and so on. Next session will determine what direction I take from here. Oh, and it's 1518, May 1.
Man, I still haven't played EUIV. I've owned it for a while, too. I think I'm waiting until I finish a CK2 game that I can convert to EUIV.
You really shouldn't do that. EUIV is similar but different enough to scratch the CK2 itch, but, be its own game and a hella good time.
Hmmmm....ok, maybe I'll have to give EUIV a shot sooner rather than later. But what country? Is Scotland a player in the EUIV timeframe? Maybe Sweden?
Swedens meant to be an awesome game - you've got Denmark and Norway to war with and there's always the slight suspicion they're overpowered as paradox are Swedish

Sweden and Norway begin the earliest start date under Denmark's control. Although they tend to revolt at the first chance.
My first EU4 campaign was Denmark. Certainly kept me busy, between assimilating the others (often by force) into a new Nordic kingdom, colonizing North America, and then getting in regular fights with all the other colonial powers. Don't think I'd necessarily recommend any of those three for a beginner but Denmark wasn't as tricksy as some of the other larger ones.
Yeah, that sounds like the country for me. I groove on Scandinavia. I'm sure it has nothing to do with their women... :smitten:
Toonces definitely do not get Attila at full price...there are 25% discounts from Green Man all the time.
Man, I'm not sure I played much of any games this weekend after Friday... mostly what I recall is cute little banshee nieces. :buck2:
Pursuant to banshee nieces and gaming, though:
1.) Riding Academy 1 (on the Surface, originally bought for the nieces on PC but never played) -- dreadful controls which probably made more sense on the PSP (I bought it for youngest cousin back then, and seem to recall it being more manageable), but it doesn't matter because the tutorial/campaign is so obscure we never had any clear idea what we were trying to do or how to do it. Eventually deleted.
2.) Kerbal Space Program (Surface) -- the tutorial still seemed a little over the head of Niecemus Prime, so I'll come back to it later once she has more experience in other things.
I don't clearly recall if we tried anything else on the Surface.
3.) Stone Age (iOS) -- after watching me play against one AI player a while, and building up a solid lead, she took over to experiment playing with it. Her first Euro game! :smitten: She seems to want to play more of this later.
4.) Run That Town (iOS) -- a city-manager game developed by the country of Australia (may even be free, I don't recall) which allows players to manage a random city of any size in Australia (or a specific one if the zip is known) as an instructional game to teach people what local politicians do. She now knows vastly much more about the game than I do, since I haven't played it yet at all. Her approval rating last I checked was 14%, the little tyrant. >:D
5.) Carcassone (iOS) -- she learned how to play the solo game (sort of) a while back, and we have a running game of 'real' Carc which we played a little over the weekend. Would have played more but got distracted by real-life something at the time.
6.) Lost Cities (iOS) -- a simple strategy card game she's been practicing on for a while; finally beat the 'tutorial' AI for the first time this weekend, which is a major step!
7.) Through the Desert (iOS) -- played about 2/3 of a game of this area-control game before we had to go do something else.
I tested a number of other games on the Surface afterward, too, with an eye toward her playing them soon/later.
8.) 8th Wonder of the World (Surface) -- an older (2003) RTS with (apparently?) minimum combat, kind of like the Settlers; might still be a bit too complicated for her, and the user interface is lumpy anyway. Saved for later.
9.) 4 Elements 2 (Surface) -- she's already played the first game a little; the second game keeps the gem-destruction strategy and adds a number of other colorful puzzle elements. And at least 4000% more fairies. She should adore it.
10.) A Walk Through The Woods (Surface) -- a hex-based puzzle game, where hexes are shuffled around to get Red Riding Hood down various forest paths, avoiding obstacles (like the wolf). Pop-up storybook gfx; this could be her first hex map game.
11.) Weather Wizard (Surface) -- a game in the time-management genre (sort of a mixture of RTS and worker-placement), quite delightful, should go over big and prepare her for more complex things.
12.) Hero of the Kingdom (Surface) -- more of an action-management game than time-management (or a turn-based time management?); the player spends health to accomplish various map-management tasks. She should love this, too. (A big multi-platform hit from last year, a sequel was recently released.)
The last two give me hope that similar pre-RTS/TB strategy games will work well for her (and for Microniece soon). :)
Won the first PBEM of the weekend against the map designer
Con and Jomni keep shooting at me
and lots of AOW III - i have captured 5 cities, have a metropolis, turned an enemy wyvern mid battle to be on my side who then ate the enemy leader - all good fun so far
I *almost* finished the Terran campaign from the original Starcraft (in SC2 using Mass Recall mod). I can't believe how much harder it is than the SC1 version. I know I'm older now, but still... I made it to the same point years ago, and I don't think I had to restart missions, at least not many.
