Title: Happy Syttende Mai FRIDAY!!
Post by: Martok on May 14, 2015, 03:11:32 PM
(Yeah, I know, I'm starting this a full day early.  However, I'm likely going to be mostly offline after this til Monday evening, so you can all suck it. :P )

I won't get much gaming done during the actual weekend here, as I'll be off on my annual trek to my mom's hometown of Spring Grove, Minnesota...where just about everyone is of Norwegian heritage, and thus Syttende Mai (literally, "May Seventeenth") is their big yearly celebration.  In addition to the usual -- watching the parade, checking out the various stands, shops, and (especially!) food -- I'll also get to see a good number friends & relatives in the area, including an aunt & uncle who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.  And as always, I'll pay a visit to the family matriarch, my Grandma Rosalie, who's still kicking at 104; I am simply amazed by this woman (and not because of her age).  :smitten:

Anyway:  Gaming-wise, I might actually get to sit down and play some good old 3.5 Dungeons & Dragons with a couple friends on Sunday, which would be a nice change of pace.  I might be playing a Dwarven sorcerer, of all things...

When I get back on Monday, the plan right now is to resume my Cardassian campaign in Birth of the Federation (Ultimate Mod 5), my Athenian campaign in Rome II: Wrath of Sparta (although holy crap, it's tough going!), and start a new campaign in Sovereignty (I really want to play around with the Auzure Isles - the pirate nation).

GalCiv3 for certain. Maybe some Apollo4x.

Enjoy the time with your friends and family Martok!  O0

Hmm, is that 80's New Wave? I seem to recall the band driftwood in the aquarium but not the song FINDING CURING AND ADDING.  ::)

More casual ARPG with Marvel Heroes, if the digital gaming mood strikes.

May also start up a new Invisible, Inc. campaign in the next few days.  :)

Lots of tabletop games in line to be learned, the top of the pile being: a Super Dungeon Explore: Forgotten King solitaire bout, Star Wars Imperial Assault, Prophecy + Dragon Realms solitaire, Merchants & Marauders + expansion, and organizing all my Federation Commander components into a huge D-ring binder and Plano box before making a solo test run (perhaps with the official automated opponent in the future).  Whew.  That's just the tip.  ^-^

I probably won't post my in-work 1st Bull Run AAR until I've, you know, actually finished the battle; but I hope I can make some progress on that this weekend. Starting tonight! (But not tomorrow night, my last close cousin, and practice-niece, graduates high school then.)

I love Martok's style in his OP :)

I will be continuing my Wolfenstein: The Old Blood campaign (it's great) and hopefully some Order of Battle - Pacific soon. Grim Dawn has been beckoning for the last few days too.

And still tempted to get the Rome 2 - Wrath of Sparta campaign.

Oh and a Rome 2 campaign as Macedon is lurking also. Or Persia.

Not sure yet.

:)

I may purchase Old Blood. I thought the latest Wolfenstein was awesome - the only thing that would add icing on that cake is some cooperative multiplayer.

I will continue my struggle against the jungles and Japanese pillboxes bugs that plague Order of Battle: Pacific in order to finish the US campaign.

My initial impression of the game was poor, and I'd like to say its improving, but unfortunately it's not. There just seems to be lots of bugs - gamebreaking bugs that require cheats in order to win (http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=372&t=64395 (http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=372&t=64395)).

The biggest challenge within OOBP is not the tactics, but the mass employment of enemy units. I have found that I'm overmatched in every scenario. On the other hand, I will say the combined land-sea battles in the later part of the US campaign are much more fun than the earlier defense, and naval only. At least with these missions I have some latitude in how I want to employ units and fight.

I haven't noticed any updates on Steam lately for my copy of Order of Battle to address any bugs...it doesn't sound like they are game-breaking or anything though.

Multiple scenarios with buggy victory conditions. For example, on the US Midway scenario you will lose regardless if you achieve both victory conditions.

The developers have said that a patch is in the works, but I havent seen a timeline.

And whilst all of you are cursing me mightily for this, I will be playing some Civ.  I might get some Sovereignty in or maybe Age of Wonders III.

Also everyone knows that the best Huey Lewis song is I Want a New Drug.

As for gaming, I have packed up my gaming rig so I am going full-on retro on my aging laptop.  We have:

ARMA: Cold War Assault
ARMA: Gold
Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
Take Command Second Manassas with the CMP mod

That's a lot of good, old gaming there!

But I can't understand what they're saying! Wait, what am I saying? That soccer I'd watch. O0 After DC Case Blue handed me my head and ass for about the 4th time, I wanted to play something a little less stressful. So I dug out my M2TW CD and have been playing with the Darth Mod as Spain. A nice, slow paced game for old people who've had enough of Red Boots kicking them in the ass and don't have guts enough to try Attila as ERE. Yet.

I'll be continuing both my Distant Worlds and EUIV Austria games this weekend. Been playing both exclusively this week and that will continue this weekend.

There will probably be some Command scenario editing thrown in somewhere. Since I've been unable to get the AI ASW screen behaving like I want in my current scenario, I'm going to put it on hold and start work on another new scenario. Thinking of getting back to work on Operation Dreamland or the US/UK vs the EU air battle over northern Europe.

Martok, if you ever get the chance you should check out the Syttende Mai celebration in my dad's home town just across the border from the Twin Cities in Wisconsin, Woodville. Just a small farming town but they have a huge Syttende Mai festival, lots of fun.

Gaming for me...same as usual: Command, working on my next Northern Fury AAR, and SPMBT, playing a custom campaign from one of the posters over at the Shrapnel Games forums.

First AMRA: Gold won't run on my computer...just too damn slow.

Then, it turns out that I still suck at TC2M.  Crap.  Well, I guess the game isn't going learn itself.   ::)

CM:BS PBEM with UCG - Geek...I'm a bit concerned. I don't want to really give anything away, but I've only got 3 units fielded and I'm not sure wth I'm meant to be doing. Is there some trigger I haven't triggered which brings on my other forces?

Also - and mainly - I will likely solely be playing Project Cars. This game has blown me away with it's whole package. Superb racing game.

If I do get a bit bored of driving, I might fire up State of Decay and take my "family" further in their little virtual post apocalyptic world.

I'm away most of the weekend but Sunday evening will see

Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris Poland will fall. Really loving the game mechanics that makes each engagement feel like a mini operation.

And Heroes and Generals To unwind. Best shooter I've played.

I have 3, well 2 and a half due to a recent mechanical mishap, reinforcements, if there are any are triggered by the designer, he can pick - 5 more tanks at 08:45 am exact, or 5 more tanks at 08:45 and have a 20 minute +/- margin of movement - theyll come when he decided, if theres any at all, after 10 minutes of playing, im glad to find out we're on the same map!!

I shall also be PBEMing with JD, running like a mad man on fire from Con and his T90 army, there shall be CMANO with the french, chinese and Nigerians - always a recipe for a party, and some Invisible inc

have a great weekend Martok, well, everyone but Martoks sounds cool

Since no one here has taken me up on my WiTP:AE offer, I'll probably keep slugging away at a solo game.  I'm in 1/42 and things aren't looking too bad except I may lose Canton Island early.  >:(

I celebrate Huey Lewis' entire catalog. Even Small World. Though, that album didn't have quite the fire that their previous albums did (Sports, Fore, Hard At Play, etc.). Hip To Be Square is definitely one of my favorites, but there's a lot of them that must be played at full volume.

You all realize that Huey Lewis and the News was a US Government plot to gets kids off drugs right?!?  :coolsmiley:

This weekend is a long one up here AND I have all the rest of next week off as well. It's planting season!
So most of my sunlight hours will be spent being muscle for planting my wife's vegetable garden.

Also, finally, got rid of the "House Guest That Wouldn't Leave"... my wife's nephew whom we hired to re-shingle our roof. Very good at his craft.... but slow and .... well.... young.  :knuppel2:
So now I can get back my office and play some games.
I owe several PBEM's, sorry fellas.
I need to write a review, sorry BB.
I need to complete a CiV campaign as Washington.
I need to get some boardgaming in, and may post some AAR's.

A lot to jam into the next 9 days.  8)

Back in the Eighties, all women looked like sexy Brazillian Bikini Soccer players. But they just hadn't gone Brazillian yet, they were still just Bikini.  ::) Some of them not even that. Usually women from France and Russia. And Mountain Women. That was before the invention of the Weed-Eater for women. What a time that was to be young and straight.

CM:BS vs. Doug...beginning to look the the Alamo, but the explosions in the last minute played were AWESOME.

Commander: Great War vs. Doug...the world is a big place, even at corps level...and what in the Sam G. Hill were the British doing in Iraq?

Someday a Canadian mechanical engineer I know will rise from his slumbers and send a Sicily '43 turn...someday...

Leipzig tournament Round 3 over at The Blitz.  Fascinating scenario, but the French start out with almost all their troops fixed.  Makes the turns easy to turn around, at least.  I will also say that, as with most games, scenario design is absolutely everything.  In this area, Leipzig is special.

News that the Warfighter (DVG version) wave two is fixing to come out inclines me to try a game with the boy over the weekend.

Best,

Really like Huey Lewis and the News....haven't been listening to them lately but have all their records and had many periods of my life where it was the only music i was listening to.

It's been almost a month without gaming for me....i just played a couple of turns of Civ IV but that was all....

Played a few turns of Pandora tonight (and finding out first why i couldn't make it work...Norton). Still....have to find the game that will bring me back behind my desktop.  :(

^ I actually judged updated my France 14 last night and want to spend some time this weekend playing it.

It's really fun playing PBEM.

Well.  It appears that OJsDad is at the far end of the Grogheads demographic.  Nothing wrong with any of the choices they included in the mix, although I am a burnt out on "Wake Up Little Susie."  If you want me to meet you somewhere in the middle, maybe we could go with some Motown next time.  Or music from Muscle Shoals.  Maybe some New Wave.  How about, 'FRIDAY on the Moon?'

Invisible Sun is another classic. Before I die I would like to see The Police reunited in concert. I couldn't afford to see them when they came around a few years ago.

^Talking Heads is another band I would love to see live. David Byrne is certifiable.

Well, it's not very likely to see the Talking heads reform. Byrne had a big falling out with Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, and possibly with Jerry Harrison as well. The latter three might get together again. They did for a while but had to use the band name 'Heads' because Byrne sued them to keep them from touring and recording as the 'Talking' Heads.

:)

Definitely some RoF and boardgames.  Possibly some Mordor and DCS and BoS and Attila.

So as it turned out I played a lot of Invisible and a little RoF and some Bloody April.

Star Wars Imperial Assault, Prophecy + Dragon Realms solitaire, Merchants & Marauders + expansion, and organizing all my Federation Commander components into a huge D-ring binder and Plano box before making a solo test run (perhaps with the official automated opponent in the future).

How do you like Imperial Assault? I kinda like the look and the Let's Play vids/reviews I've seen. I have a copy of it on the way to me and it should be here today actually.
