Title: Steam Summer Sale 2015
Post by: steve58 on May 29, 2015, 06:51:13 PM
...rather than continuing the speculation from this thread (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=9429.120), thought I'd start a whole new speculative thread of its own.

Rumor is the sale will start on June 11 and last until June 20 (http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/29/steam-summer-sale-2015-dates-leak).

Looks like another source also thinks June 11th is the kick-off....hoping my wallet stays safe, nothing I can really think of that I have been waiting for a sale....plus with SOW: Waterloo coming out the same day, my initial funds reserved for that....just hoping Waterloo hasn't become one of those Matrix premium cost titles, although I would be willing to spend a bit on it:)

Probably looking to complete all CK2 and EU4 DLC's that I missed.

Battle Brothers, Software Inc., and perhaps the new hockey manager sim for me. Only have about $20..so need to get a steam card or two.

All just depends on the discounts. I'm looking at " Darkwood" for a little top down survival, " The Master Plan" For a little squad based tactical, and Ziggurat for a little Hexen/Heretic FPS action. Also looking to finish off CK2 add-ons.

I'll probably pick up 5-6 games of which I will play two immediately for less than half an hour apiece, then feel guilty about not playing the others. Then when the Steam Christmas Sale comes around, I'll attempt to purchase some of the same games only to be told they are already in my Games Library.

And I won't care, because I'm Steelgrave and I'm an addict.   :P

^  And that is why I'm actually content to not have any money at the moment (at least not for spending on games).  Like I don't already have too many that I don't play (either enough of, or not at all)...  ::)  :-[

I see it says it lasts until June 21, which is good. I get back off the cruise ship on June 20 and the wife and kids leave that same evening.  >:D

...another possible clue.  Steam's current Weeklong Deals (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?filter=weeklongdeals) list is only a paltry 25 games.

F**k we're sick..... :D
I think everyone should come up with one rule for the steam sale, never to violate on pain of death.....well maybe not death, how about public shaming.

My self imposed rule[feel free to borrow it] I WILL NOT BUY A SEQUEL WHEN I HAVEN'T PLAYED THE FIRST PART OR EVEN F**KING INSTALLED IT.

Now excuse me i have to go add shit to my wishlist.

I have Mass Effect, 2 and 3. Does this mean I need to finish Mass Effect now?     :2funny:
Title: Re: Steam Summer/Spring Sale (rumors)
Post by: BanzaiCat on June 09, 2015, 07:55:22 AM
The Mass Effect games are but a small handful that belong to the category "I finished them." They're also in the microscopic category within that one called "I played them multiple times." You gotta start with ME1 though, even though it's a bit dated compared to the others. The storyline is well worth going through from 1 to 2 and ending with 3...as long as you have the patched version of ME3 that has the better ending(s). I know there was a lot of hate for the original ending of ME3 but I didn't have a big problem with it. I think my biggest complaint was that it was over and that it was obvious there wouldn't be a fourth one.

Though even that has changed.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2015/06/08/mass-effect-4-igns-e3-2015-hopes

Apologies in advance. IGN's videos are even more whored out than Gus by Starfury and ten times worse than YouTube with even more pop ups and nonsense.

Star is just pissed because he KNOWS you will have a review of the new TW DLC posted on the front page before he even finishes his draft copy of the Panthers in the Fog review.  Don't worry about it.  I suspect this will be a lingering angst on Star's part for quite some time to come.

A pretty underwhelming start to the sale for me.  Although 50% off X-Plane 10 is kind of tempting.

For what it's worth, I bought this myself recently and already have 24 hours logged (astonishing for me).  I think it's good.  Not without a few issues, but a very enjoyable game nonetheless.

Naturally.

Even if you manage to get on and miraculously purchase something, you probably won't be able to d/l it worth a damn.

The first two or three days of the sale will be this way.

Why not? Consider it practice for the Steam Summer Sale!  :D

I think you want Tribes of the East, which apparently with a patch allows you to play through all the content from HoMMV and the other expansion.

Oh.. check it out once prime time starts.  Once people start rolling in for the evening, there will be regular time-outs.  I'm sure they've increased their hosting capacity over recent years but there are still some dead spots.

I recall gifting games in previous years where they didn't show up on the recipient's account for two or three days.  Mixed with repeated time-outs when trying to check out, not knowing whether the order went through.

Probably the worst during the Christmas sales, though.

There are not all that many games on the Steam sale that I'm all that interested in at the moment.

That might change in the next few days, but I actually buy more games during weekend/weekly sales than during the large sales if the deal sounds right.

Thus far, I've only bought Dungeon Warfare. I didn't think it would be on sale, but it is. Paying 12 bucks for it wasn't going to happen, but 6 is a good price. I liked the free version I played at armorgames.

Hero Siege
Chainsaw Warrior: Lords of the Night
Depths of Tolagal

Just inexpensive stuff.  Haven't gone overboard since I've not been playing much lately.

Watching for future Daily Sales
, but already discounted:

Dead State: Reanimated
Space Hulk: Ascension (with Dark Angels DLC, perhaps.  Space Wolves suck!   :smiley6600:  )
Ultimate Space Commando
Homeworld Collection
Avernum 2
Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms
Crowntakers
Battle Brothers

Hoping some of the others show up on the Dailies instead.  There are two or three I'm holding out for and, for once, I'm passing on titles I would normally get if they aren't under $5.

Title: Re: Steam Summer Sale 2015
Post by: ComradeP on June 13, 2015, 06:20:34 AM
Yes, the sounds are neat, as are the traps. The physics system is also fairly detailed for a game that looks this simple.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you throw an enemy against a wall, he might bounce back. Generally speaking, something like the spring trap is best used 3 tiles away from a pit I believe, or two if there's only pits between the trap and the wall.

The minecart tracks can be a blessing and a curse. Something getting run over by a minecart is fun to watch, but the bomb minecarts can also damage barricades, and you can't place traps on the tracks.

The rune system also keeps the game fresh, you can make it as challenging as you like and also change in which way you want to make the enemy more challenging. I always play with only 1 life, out of tower defense habit.

Picked up Day of Defeat as I'm a Valve fanboy (and the $2.49 pricetag didn't hurt either) and I've got to say that I'm surprised at:
1. how well it runs on my old laptop.
2. how active a community it still seems to have.
3. how much I totally suck with the gameplay in it at this point.

Think I'll pick up the CoD WW2 themed version and call it a day on WW2 fps'es.

I was a little disappointed with it because the meat of the game is the turn-based tactical combat portion and I found it to be too simplistic and limited to be engaging for very long.

I'm looking at the Rome 2 DLC's that are all off at 75%.  What ones are must haves?  I don't know that I need all of them.  I only have about 2 hours played so far.

I can only speak for Wrath of Sparta.

I'd certainly say it's worth getting if you have an at least casual/passing interest in the Peloponnesian War and/or the warfare of ancient Greece in general.  If you don't, however, then you needn't bother.

BBMike-I'm not sure where I read it but I could swear that a SP campaign is in the works for Verdun.

I hope they do add single player. I'll keep it on my wishlist just in case.  :)

Nice!

Battlegrounds adds some much-needed variety to the tactical battles. I recommend it Martok....for the price of a coffee it is well worth it.  O0

I'm glad I found out before clicking buy.  What a shame.

I'm kind of conflicted on this, since I, too totally hated the fact you could not save mid-battle with NWAC, but, it never seemed to be as big an issue/problem for me with VaS...maybe because the battles seem to progress faster and there's not as much setup/planning involved with Vas vs NWAC???  IMHO, for the price, I'd still grab it...

@Rayfer
I did not find it a click fest and I really like it... they offered free DLC and it plays somewhat like a cross between ST Fleet Command, Space Rangers etc... I have enjoyed it.

@budd
I would recommend Ascension as the better game with a stat progression and squad management, better missions/campaign, more enemies, weapons and better maps, just a lot more content....

Europa Universailis IV El Dorado (http://store.steampowered.com/app/338160) for sure.

Anyone picked up Homebrew (http://store.steampowered.com/app/325420)?  As a fan of Kerbal Space Program, this one keeps calling me.  I haven't given the demo enough attention, but may still grab it at $7.

...and still waiting for Invisible Inc (http://store.steampowered.com/app/243970) to get a real nice discount.

I was holding out for a better price drop to begin with.  It's cheap enough, but I've bought a few games already.  However since it became apparent that a deeper discount wasn't going to happen, and I had some credit on GOG anyway, I went for it.  Will post impressions later, unless there's already a thread around here.

Don't think so.

It's more of a tactical turn-based skirmish game with an open & randomized campaign layer map featuring gang management and rpg-ish improvement.

Think Battle Brothers in a post-apoc setting, perhaps?  Also mentions "roguelike" but that could mean any number of things with how that term is thrown around these days. I suppose it would hold a better claim to it than many.

Homeworld Remastered, Arma3 plus DLC, some Crusader Kings DLC, some EU4 DLC, Sovereignty: Crown of Kings.

I bought all of the Alien:Isolation DLC for my son for father's day (is that the way Father's day is supposed to work...?)

Plus, Matrix had a competing sale and I bought Starhammer.

For youse bums that are refusing a new game, i recommend an old one. Pretoreans is on steam for a few bucks. It's a fairly typical rts type setup with blocky (slightly lower res than warcraft 3) 3D units and terrain. To great enjoyment I found I failed tutorial missions! Part is having to understand their design. I attacked the wrong building losing a village. Part is a strong dependence on rock paper scissors type unit interactions. Part is heavily scripted missions through tight passes. The last I normally hate. In this case there is something very appealing about the quality of the mission design, and the Roman story. Or maybe it is just fun to be called General by your units when you select them!  ;)

Somehow the whole combination works very well, making you really look foreward to the next mission. This is the most enjoyment I have had in a game in a long time. The feel is like when you first got Starcraft 1, but in a Roman Empire setting. For a few dollars you are mad not to try it.

This game badly needs a sequel, only if it keeps the magic feel of the first one. How this didnt become a big title on release is a mystery. Was there some other high profile game? Probably.

Like many on the forum, you are not wearing pants. Did the wife run off shopping?

Mr. Bigglesworth: I think Praetorians wasn't mainstream enough to be a big success. It was made by Pyro Studios from Spain, and most people only know they made Commandos if they know what the studio is/was to begin with. I personally also liked the game a lot, but I guess it was just too obscure to be a big success. For instance, I'm not sure how many larger game stores sold the game at the time.

The game also tends to crash on modern PC's, unless you use some workarounds.

-

I picked up Dishonored GOTY. I had not played it yet and from time to time I get the urge to play a nice stealth/infiltration game. Thus far, it's what I hoped Thief III would be (although some indicator as to how visible/loud you are would be nice). I'm not going to touch the most recent Thief with a 10 ft pole. The recent Splinter Cell games might also have been an option, I stopped playing the series at Double Agent.

I always wear pants while on this forum. Not always zipped-up, but worn. And they are my own pants. Because I ask my wife every time she hands them to me, "Honey, are these my pants or yours"? And she always laughs and says, "You're always sooo... funny". I take that as a yes.

Your wife hands you your pants? You leave your credit cards in them? That explains her quote. Better look to see if they are cardboard with crayola in your pocket.

The only thing I've grabbed is the Battlegrounds DLC for Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes ($2.49).

I've *almost* hit the purchase button for the remastered version of Homeworld, but cheap as it is, I'm still just a little too broke this month to justify doing so (especially since goodness only knows how long I'd take to get around to playing the bloody thing).  Gonna be good and force myself to wait.  O:-)

I think I only spent about 80 bucks (some DCS, some SHIV uboats, and some Europa Universalis IV without the common sense DLC) so I figured I'd saved about 80 Bucks and I have just spent that on boardgames.   So it all turned out okay.

I've only done one scenario with the new Soldier Summit route, but it's a great looking route.

Here's a hint: look for Elphaba's scenarios in the Steam Workshop for Train Simulator. His scenarios are excellent and he's created a large number of runs for many routes and engines.

Football Tactics for $5..a terrific little turn based soccer game
Galaxy Union, possibly the most complex turn based 4x game I have ever seen. VERY deep
Wargame Red Dragon
Mad Games Tycoon.

All things considered, just excellent summer selections for me....at about $30 total. I actually still have $14. How odd!

How deep and complex can it be? The manual is 4 pages. It seems to have some unique concepts, like the periodic table of the elements and a patent system, but in looking for info. on the game it actually doesn't seem that complex.

Interested in hearing some of your impressions, though, once you dig in.

There isn't squat for information..no tutorials, no hand holding. What there is, is the entire periodic table to mine, from planets, either the solid kind or gas clouds. The game uses the symbols from the table as well. Krypon? KR. Selenium? SE....and each of these 70+ elements is priced separately, and dynamically.

There is a massive number of things to manufacture...basic goods, electronics, or pharmaceuticals. Elements not used in a production cycle are sold automatically, as are the products of your manufacturing. This does streamline the economy nicely.

There are a ton of buildings to build on each colony, each of which have a significant effect on gameplay. Each building can be upgraded up to level five. A mine producing 5 units of AU can produce 25 units of gold after four upgrades. Which cost money. Money that could extract materials in an adjacent system that may lead to discoveries, and a patent being available. Patents give you 500% sales for 20 turns.

The game is won by controlling 50% of the shares in the universe. Not exactly sure how this works, but it APPEARS to mean 50% of the total wealth of the universe.

My first game, after 16 turns, I had 0.95% of the shares. I pushed end turn, without doing anything, and it went down to 0.75%. Same with my second game. Rapid expansion, built mines on two planets in the same system, and built basic goods. Got to 7.2% of the wealth, hit end turn three times (didn't improve the economy or expand), and BOOM! Down to 4.6%.

This game is HARD. Guns vs. butter, for sure..but you better choose butter for a very long time.

So far, so good. Do not be put off by the black and white nature of the game, or of the limited ship selection for combat. This is first and foremost an economic sim.
