Title: Advertising
Post by: renobe on July 24, 2015, 10:43:19 AM
I know I am going to get the business for this, or be accused of trolling. But it seems like vast majority of the post here are trying to sell new games or sales in general . I am wondering if the people posting here are people connected to gaming companys.  Where  are the post for the older games. For example. The strategies, compatibility, quality, of the games.

You're overreacting.  Gamers by their nature are attracted to the new and shiny, and that's where most of the discussion between them will lie.  This site is no better or worse in that regard than any other gaming forum.

Tgb is completely correct. O0

I still play Imperialism 1 and 2, Sid Meier's Alpha-Centauri, Colonization, WinSPWW2/MBT etc, none of which are new games - and I can honestly say from my conversations with others that I'm not alone in playing older games. You'll see from posts in the forum that many of us source games from GoG, which reissues older games in formats that newer OS's can cope with.

Really?  I don't see that much at all....sure, some of the forum members get excited about new purchases and share their impressions with the rest of us, which is exactly what I want to see from the site.  But most of them do not represent any specific company, just a fan.  I think there are very few occasional posts by companies letting us know about new versions or upcoming releases, but those are very much in the minority.

So I am not really sure where you are seeing the "vast majority" doing this in these forums....but maybe I am missing something...as for where are the other posts about older games, feel free to jump in start some of the posts yourself to help get things started if your interested in certain discussions.
Title: Re: Advertising
Post by: Bison on July 24, 2015, 12:18:24 PM
I have no affiliation with any game company.  I usually just discuss what I'm playing at the moment on the table or computer, or jump in on a discussion for a game I have or want to play.  And as far as I know, the only game affiliation with the site are those games that have advertisement on the site which is like seeing a Coca-Cola commercial during a sports event or tv show.

What a peculiar thread!  The vast majority of posters here are consumers discussing both new games and the older games they enjoy.  A few devs may pop in now and then - but mostly to get feedback on their products or perhaps explain design decisions.  Of course there are adverts, but in my experience they are completely separate from the forum content.

Agreed.  Not sure where renobe is coming from? There are numerous ongoing threads about game strategies, old and new....some of them go on for months across dozens of pages of posts, just check out the Rome 2 Total War thread. Like Bison, I have no affiliation with any gaming company. I find these forums a great place to get honest info (both positive and negative) before making a purchase decision and for tips on becoming a better strategy wargamer.

I've got two active threads going on right now for ARMA 2 and ARMA 3.  Not sure how you could classify those as "new" games.   :idiot2:
Title: Re: Advertising

When you get a group of people together that love games, they're going to talk about games. They will discuss them, lambast them, praise them, gush about them, bitch about them, moan, complain, or otherwise love on anything under the sun. This not only includes games specifically, but also developers AND publishers. This is not 'advertising' in the strictest sense of the word; it's the sharing of opinion, and the real thing that makes GH such a wonderful place to be is, people here see each side of an argument instead of blasting the side that they don't agree with. This isn't just limited to games, but also to tons of other topics that the forums here reflect.

Management here will absolutely not stand for conflicts of interest, nor will any writer worth their salt.

Fairly certain you didn't really look at previous posts. We talk about all kinds of older games. Imperialism II, Birth of the Federation, Starflight, Age of Rifles come to mind immediately. We're always talking about what GOG.com has on sale or has released.

[stop  reading here Brant]
There's even a new article on the front page about Gaming Nostalgia!

Well...okay, I guess it depends on your perspective.

Someone posts something: "Hey I bought this cool thing, check it out!"
Second Someone replies: "Goddammit, that IS cool. Stop doing that, now I want to buy it!"
First Someone posts 198 pictures/screenshots/posts describing how cool it is.
Second Someone curses again, blaming First Someone for making them pull out their card to make yet another online purchase.

We stimulate the gaming economy, I suppose.  8)

To the best of my knowledge (and I'm a reviewer), nobody who does reviews has ever reviewed anything they have produced.  Brant has some game stuff - but he never reviews his own stuff.  Brant is the only person that I know of who posts on a lot of topics who has ever been on game design.  And Brant can correct me if I'm wrong - but he does board games and has not been releasing all that much stuff in recent years.  That is the staff side (and we are not paid for reviews).

Most of the people who post actively have, over time, disclosed what they do for a living.  Almost nobody has any paid relationship with any gaming company.

Most reviewers will state in the review itself if they paid for the game or if it was provided (free) to them.  I always do when I write reviews.  Here the only thing a reviewer gets at best is a copy of the game.

Last, the games that almost everyone talks about have small sales numbers in units.  There is not much discussion of Playstation, X-Box, or Wii games - and those make up almost all game revenues.  The console games are almost never reviewed - and when the games are launched across multiple portals most of the people here are playing the PC version.  Honestly, outside of the console games none of the manufacturers/publishers are making enough money to financially support paid forum people.

A (unnamed) competitive site is actually owned by a major wargame producer.  The fact is not hidden, but it is not actively promoted either.

Sure there are occasional developers who make posts that they have a new product, have made a update/expansion/patch, or that a game has had a price cut.  But even most of the sale information is posted by people who are ordinary users.  Readers here like these announcements because they are interesting information to us.

I think you have a false impression and the responses you are getting are trying to point this out in a polite fashion.

1.  I have done some digital work, but not for commercial release.  Did stuff for the NSA and NDU
2.  Sadly, the "has not been releasing all that much stuff in recent years" is accurate :(

I am just here trying to sell Jonny Quest DVDs.

Subliminally, of course.

I know we do occasionally have a developer show up (usually an Indie) and start a chat about a new game they are developing but it seems to rarely be a pure sales pitch. Most of us are, um, older (if not necessarily mature) and usually give a balanced reply to such conversations as opposed to ripping the poor person a new one.

We are like minded people, so when we find something we like....we share that information. The same goes for when we find a game that sucks. We try to spare one another the pain. Personally, when I'm checking out the latest new and shiny on Steam or from Matrix, this is the first place I look for an opinion.

Even if there are people connected to a game post their announcements here, no one is forcing you to buy them.
Members are actually delighted to find out about these announcements and follow up discussion is encouraged.
The community will decide whether a game is worthy.

Fwiw, I wrote about the same sort of thing elsewhere but was actually thinking more of BGG when I did it although I did not name names at the time.

I think that there is a place in the hobby to talk about game play, design philosophy, strategies, history and things like that behind already published material and will go so far as to observe that the 'gotta have it yesterday/latest/greatest, etc...' oftentimes buries the other stuff when lumped into the same folder at messageboards.

I am not really complaining because if I feel like it I can actually address it elsewhere, and the fact that I haven't is more about doing something else and the site is a sidelight right now.

It is interesting the number of people that felt compelled to make defensive comments, although for me basically this site is what it is and one can take it or leave it.

For the life of me, I'm not seeing "defensive comments" but rather normal conversation. No one was attacked or disparaged for their opinion, instead a point was raised and a number of readers choose to answer the post on their own. If that's not the purpose of a discussion thread, I'm not sure what you expect. As for those who can take this site or leave it, many of the respondents have been regular contributors since our doors opened, so I believe they are on the "take it" side of things. The forum is just a bunch of people with the same interest so are keen to share about new products on the market. No underhand stuff going on. Infact the game I work on I don't recommend at all as I know it still needs more work for it to fulfil it's potential, then I will recommend it, but only in passing...not some advertising campaign.. The next patch out though has the game at about 90% (It was only prob 40 to 50% on release)..and will be worth buying.

Let this thread hang in the wind as an example of how to troll.

Or the new forum rule is only discuss games older than one year.

Agreed, this is the one site where people can openly discuss games, both likes and dislikes. I don't even visit those 'other' sites anymore, where if you say the wrong thing you start an open war (Even though we're wargamers, we don't like Forum Wars). At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their opinions, but what really stuck out to me in the original poster's message was that he said the vast majority of the posts on the board were pushing the games.  I would love for the original poster to identify some specific posts where someone was really pushing hard for others to buy games.  Certainly people provide their impressions and recommendations, but I don't recall any posts that really tried to hard sale someone on a game and push them to buy.  We are just a very impulse oriented group and when we hear about a good game, we jump on it:)

Well, this was an amusing thread and all, but I hope everyone here will soon get back to the more important business of buying my 2007 award winning fantasy novel that I've actually provided for free somewhere around here, plus buying a copy of Fantasy Wars, Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition, and... {checking current sig} ...Vietnam '65, though be aware the linked AAR is highly critical of the original state of the game.

I'm basically a new Bison.  Think Bison and then think the New 52 Bison.  I'm the New 52 Bison and unlike Aquaman after his New 52 revamp; I'm really close to being an actual superhero.

How can you use "manly" and "Aquaman" in the same statement?

Even if Aquaman were not irradiated with The Ghey, he's still about a useful a hero as Dazzler, and not nearly as fabulocious.

Allow me to translate: Aquaman, an American comic book character, is in the eyes of most American forum regulars, this man:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstream1.gifsoup.com%2Fview1%2F1984630%2Fmr-humphries-o.gif&hash=7c3c691bc6ec1ce44f372ef8192de0646df6ba3f)

Dazzle, a considerably more obscure US comic book character, is essentially this person, but with roller-skates:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.styleite.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2013%2F12%2Fpatsy.jpg&hash=328ce2d87cfdaa496a5d73289fe744a05ed452ec)

Sadly there is no direct translation for Sharknado. Think of it as a really bad Eurovision episode with fish.

Young and worried.

To be honest, there isn't much reason for Superman to be worried about Aquaman, except that he wants everyone to get along and Batman's about to get his throat ripped out. (Things don't go that badly.)

Re Aquaman and Sharknado: (1) I seem to recall the third movie is about a series of such storms on the Eastern seaboard, not in only one city (and not in space); (2) Aquaman would be making the Skarknado swarm, by various means. ;)

^^So, Aquaman is so desperate for attention that he's conjuring up Sharknados in a sad bid to be noticed? Sharknados that are rather easily defeated by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid? Boy, what a powerhouse...
