Title: Overwatch
Post by: W8taminute on May 24, 2016, 05:50:49 AM

If you liked TF2 then you're gonna love this.  Played it for about an hour and a half last night and it's good.  Casual but also competitive.

Let us know how you like it after a few days.

I loved TF2 (and still play it occasionally), and tried out overwatch during the beta, and I liked the characters variation, but the maps had a lot of empty areas and then choke points which made most of the rounds pretty one sided.

Not sure if it was just my luck of the draw during the beta but it made me want to wait to see how it went after release.

I like the concept and you know Blizzard will support it, I just don't think it's going to meet my dollar / hour / enjoyment ratio

My initial impression was pretty bad. I'm generally pretty bad at MP shooters but I broke down when a friend convinced me to buy it. Community was pretty good from what I saw but I just sucked and kept getting killed right after I spawned. So I asked for a refund after only a few matches.

After taking a break from it I jumped back in and had a couple of really awesome matches as one of the defense/tank classes and decided to hang with it for a little longer. Forgot to cancel my refund request before I hit the rack last night but if they haven't processed it by the time I get home I'm going to cancel it.

Servers where stable for the most part. Had a few match restarts late last night, after the match had already started, because a player dropped or we started with less then 10 players. But I didn't notice any lag or disconnects myself.

From what I saw matches are always 5 v 5. I found the maps just big enough where you don't feel cramped but small enough where you don't go ages without seeing the enemy. Maps are filled with choke points and most of the action happens around them. From what little I saw even if a enemy had fortified around one choke point there are normally a few ways to go around it.

My son is going wonky over this game - and to give him credit, he has put a crap-ton of time into TF2, so he is very familiar with the genre.  I've told him to give it a month before buying (to see/hear reviews and to get the general lay of the land), but I don't know if what I'm saying is getting into his head.

We'll see, but it has a long way to go before it takes the place of Custom Hat Combat Simulator in my book.

I liked the look of it

Then I saw it was by Blizzard

And I thought about the "hook" that was Warcraft

And decided - no. I don't want a MMORPG again.

I have heard there's single player too - but I'm not "into it" that much and I've bought 3 or 4 games in the last month so it's not in my list of potential buys yet.

Is there single player content?  I thought I read there wasn't going to be any and no future plans.

According to this (http://www.dualshockers.com/2016/05/23/overwatch-is-getting-a-rankedcompetitive-mode-sometime-in-june-no-single-player-in-current-plans/): "....Jeff Kaplan also said that their [sic] are no current plans for any single-player content in the game, but that they are keeping it in mind...."

Yeah I think BB has a PvE and possibly single player mode.

Overwatch is TF2 for all intents and purposes. And I don't mean that in a bad way.

Yup you do ;)

Battleborn is a MOBA with PvE, PvP and Overwatch is a team shooter that only has PvP modes. Since Battleborn seems to be rather "meh" and nowhere near the greatness of Borderlands (which is what everybody expected, a BL experience in a MOBA style) it seems Overwatch is the better game. Not going to jump in right now, however since Destiny still fills my need for online shooter fun, perhaps at a discount later just for the fun of it, we'll see.  O:-)

There is a single player mode of sorts.  You can elect to play a match teamed up with ai players against a team of ai players.  The perfect arena for practicing your skills with a character.  I'm really enjoying this title.  The great thing about Overwatch is the character personalities and that it's easy to play but hard to master.

And I'm totally eating crow on this as we bought it last night.  ::)

Does look fun, and I can't wait to play whatever the TF2 Pyro equivalent is in it.

Mei is probably the closest to the pyro, but in reverse. She has a freeze gun  :)

Game report from the boy:

He likes it; the additional characters & their abilities vs. the ones found in TF2 require an interesting re-pathing/relearning of skills and whatnot but there is a familiar enough gameplay so that he's not totally out of his depth.  He isn't sure that its a "TF2 killer," per se, but he says that it could be a contender IF it manages to have the staying power and popularity that TF2 has had for damn near a decade now.

I was going to say longer but after researching it, technically you are right.  Ive been playing it since near the beginning in one iteration or another for near 20 years. Back in the day I used to do a lot of league play and we were quite competitive in our table.    Will be interested in how Overwatch evolves.  Please God no hats.

How about shoes?

You can get licensing deals with all the big shoe makers to support it being FTP.

I was in South Korea last week and a TV ad of this kept coming out every 15 mins.
Looks like a big launch here in Singapore:

I don't know why, but Blizzard games are huge in Asia in general and Korea in particular.

Nothing wrong with that, I'm actually more curious on the why.

My will power is weakening on this however. I'll probably grab it once I have $40 burning a hole in my pocket.

I love the art style of this game which is sort of Japanese Anime-like.  It does appeal to Asians.  I'm also slowly getting interested in this game.

Played the last beta before launch.
I think its polished (like all Bliz games are), but it is definately not for me.

I don't like the frantic short matches and I find the gunplay to lack feel or feedback. Tried most classes, but my feeling is the same with all characters I tried.
What I do like very much is that this game is not about kill / death ratio but the progress and glory as a team.

I play a lot of Overwatch these days. Surprised it doesn't have a bigger following here as it is an excellent game imho - team based or solo.

Careful, a new offensive hero released, and every...single...dps player, has entered a state of full blown retardation.

Its real bad.

I mean DPS players are normally dumb but its a new level.

What's a DPS player?
Title: Re: Overwatch
Post by: Hofstadter on November 15, 2016, 10:35:16 PM
There are four class types in overwatch, offence, defense, tank, healer. Dps players are the main attack method because they most put the most damage.

Problem is theyre all idiots. They dont have tactical awareness.

Im a healer main. So i have to watch them consistently being terrible.

Damage per Second.  The equalizer metric of all RPG damage-dealers (unless you have Alpha Strike types, who can kill in one blow).
