The Vulture has always looked like the pathetically terrible villain he's always been in every Spidey (and other) comic he's ever been in.

This looks nothing like the pathetic Vulture I grew up reading about.

I wonder if this is really Iron Man: Spiderman's Homecoming. Willing to bet Robert Downey, Jr.'s paycheck is a helluva lot more than the kid's.

I think Marvel's discovered they can no longer afford Downey in standalone Iron Man movies.

Maybe they should just have him be a disembodied voice like Jarvis and re-use his old lines from previous films.  8)

I'm with JD -- this looks decent, but I'm not chomping at the bit to go see it.  I really enjoyed the first two Sam Raimi films, so Homecoming will have to be at least as good as those for me to judge it worthy.

'Back To School' made an appearance on HBO last night...I watched this movie repeatedly back in the late 80s/early 90s. Last night when I found it, I showed it to my daughter. "Hey, watch this, you'll be surprised." Sure enough, Robert Downey, Jr. makes his appearance. A very, very, very young RDj.

My main concern about the trailer is that, once again, he's just standing there with his mask off in front of a bunch of people on a train.  :crazy2:

(He had an excuse the previous time, admittedly.)

Edited to add: okay, my main concern about the actual trailer, is that the trailer-makers used the same "this is my chance to prove myself" flip over the copter with the web-wings sequence twice. That's just sloppy -- possibly the single sloppiest thing I've seen regarding all the Marvel films so far. (Which is certainly praising with faint damnation, but still.)

Spiderman is the only Marvel hero that's been able to go back in time and get young again every time they make a new movie about him, so that's special. Maybe Dr. Strange is helping him out with that Time-Thing he uses.  \m/

Spider-Man was my gateway into serious comic collecting back in the day. I was already beholden to Iron Man and remember in middle school I'd ride my bike up to the corner store to get Iron Man and GI Combat from the stand every so often. Once I had a car and started visiting actual comic stores, Spidey was my first choice, then X-Men second.

The lady in charge of Sony's Spider-plans (I forget her name) made waves in the past few days by talking about how rare it is that rival movie production studios would share characters like Spider-man, and that after the next MCU Solo-spider movie "it might never happen again".

What Sony is evidently betting on, is that they can use the upcoming Venom and Black Cat / Silver Sable films (plus maybe something else) to keep rights to this corner of Marvel until MCUSpider2 arrives (after Infinity War 1 or 2), and then piggyback on fan desire for good Spider-man films to bootstrap him back into their stable permanently away from Marvel.
Title: Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Post by: Martok on March 29, 2017, 03:00:23 PM
That strikes me as an hilariously long shot on Sony's part.  But then, that might be the best (only?) hand they can really play at this point.
Title: Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Post by: JasonPratt on March 29, 2017, 03:57:49 PM
The Venom movie could be a long shot. But they're in something of a cleft stick trying it. He's a character intrinsically tied to Spider-man, but he could be written without any ties. If they go the former route it's going to be super weird without connections to SM. If they go the latter route -- which is entirely feasible (and word is that Sony is aiming for an R-rated horror film, plus the new Life film shows how they could make the idea work without any connection to SM), then trying to tie SM back later in would look overconveniently weird.

The BC/SS movie, on the other hand, could theoretically work without ever having the remotest ties to Spider-man. Sony could literally create a whole side-continuity featuring them teaming up against Spider-rogues (the vast majority of whom also don't have or need ties to Spider-man), and maybe picking up some teammates for an alternate super-team. That would be my strategy: let Marvel continue paying us (at Sony) to use Parker and his immediate supporting cast, then build up brand value for the rogue gallery that the MCU hasn't bid back yet.

It would be the film-studio equivalent of hate sex.   >:D O0

Kingpin was really strong on Daredevil, but yeah, I'd have to agree.

One of Marvel's biggest problems is that many of its strongest villains are tied up in the film rights to Fantastic Four and X-Men, which they don't own.  At least now they have a few good Spiderman villains back.

Kingpin was strong. I was thinking of the movies. The TV villians have generally been better than their movie counterparts.

I've just fallen in love with Daredevil on Netflix-- started Season 2 and up to episode 4. Damn, it's good! Isn't Vulture and Hawk kind of the same character? A guy in a giant bird flying suit?

Daredevil has a very slow start...sort of like Iron Fist...but they both rev up well.

Very true. After it got going good, members of the family would walk by the TV while it was on and ask, "What's that show"? I'd say Daredevil and they'd say, "I think I would like that". I never told them it's a Super Hero show or they would probably run.

Falcon, and yes basically. Except traditionally Vulture is much, much older. Over time he has tech'd up a lot to try to overcome this (and got a youth-sucking device for a while, if I hazily remember.)

The MCU should introduce some popular character actor, who isn't doing much at any time and can be called in for an easy paycheck, to be the Tinkerer: one of the old-school Marvel villains who sets up the tech for a lot of the tech-based villains.

I remember reading The Further Adventures of Batman, an anthology of short stories,  many years ago. One of the stories focused on an inventor, named Kittlemeyer, who made gear for Batman and for the villians Batman fought (basically for anyone who could afford his services). I always thought that was a neat idea that would make for a good story in an RPG or something.

Title: Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Post by: mirth on July 06, 2017, 09:04:52 PM
Just back from seeing it. Excellent movie. Probably the most I've enjoyed a superhero flick since the first Guardians of the Galaxy. It's that good.

Here are some thoughts. I'll start with the "bad". There isn't much and you have to stretch a little to find it.

-What was done for a Vulture origin story was weak and unconvincing, but they needed to establish the character and they didn't waste a lot of time with it.

-Michael Keaton was under-utilized. Don't get me wrong, he was great, but I wish they had given him a little more freedom with the role.

- The plot relies on a pretty major contrivance. It doesn't ruin the movie, but it's a little disappointing. You'll get over it.

That's really all I can say negative about it. This is what I liked:

-Tom Holland is outstanding. Better in the role than either Maguire or Garfield. He is perfect as Peter Parker, gives the character real humanity. Someone finally figured out that they key to Spiderman (much like Mark Ruffalo with Hulk/Banner) is to get Peter Parker right.

-Supporting cast was excellent. And I don't just mean Stark and Vulture. Pete's friends, Aunt May, etc were all well cast and acted.

-No Spiderman origins story. Yay! I'm almost as sick of rehashing this origin story as the Batman story.

-I think Marisa Tomei is hotter now than she was 25 years ago. And she was great as May.

-The ending was possibly the best I've seen in any MCU movie. Almost perfect.

-The rest was what you've come to expect from any Marvel movie: Terrific set piece fights. Right blend of humor and action.

Out all the Spiderman movies, this may be the best. At the very least, it's on par with Raimi's Spiderman 2 (which was great imo). If you like these types of movies at all, go see it.  9.5/10

It was really good.  We had goofy, not exactly completely competent 15 year old Peter Parker.  Lots of fight quips and he acts like a 15 year old.  Keaton was a very good villain.  Probably third in superhero villains behind Loki and the first Green Goblin.  Really solid villain. Poor villains are the great weakness in superhero movies.

All of the characters were very good.  We thought more about the characters than the fight scenes (which were really good).

The only gripe my wife had was no "spidey sense" of danger.

I guess Stark hasn't installed it yet.

Wait, what, really? They just left out the Spider-sense altogether?!?

I mean, it's difficult to write around, sure, but that seems awfully extreme, since that's one of the few super-powers that is a legitimate cultural icon in itself.

Read recently that Kevin Feige and Tom Holland confirmed that the little boy pretending to be Iron Man in IM2, during the fight sequence at the end, was Peter Parker (long a fan theory but naturally unconfirmed)!

Saw it today, and I admit I did not like it nearly as much as some of you.

The kid playing Spider-man/Peter Parker was pretty good. I totally agree that he epitomized what an awkward 15-year-old boy would do as a super-hero, and it was highly entertaining in that regard.

Michael Keaton was very good as Vulture, and big kudos to the movie for...well, how his name was revealed, let's just say that.

Farveau is looking way too plump and old, and Downey, Jr. is showing signs of age big time too.

Marisa Tomei was okay, but not nearly as important a character as I thought they might make her out to be (being Aunt May and all, a central pillar to Parker). I felt like she was a cardboard cut-out put in place, like the movie's trying to be all "nudge nudge wink wink she's hawt wooooooah eh?" to the audience, and having her be just that and nothing else.

The "Washington Monument built by slaves" thing was just utterly awful; it absolutely reeked of SJW bullshit and seemed completely out of place right at that moment, like the movie was trying to make some grandiose statement to a captive audience, and it completely fell flat. Not to mention made me lose all respect for the character that spouted it in the first place.

I don't know. I think Marvel's starting to lose a lot of steam, and this movie was like a broken bridge that the train just kind of plummeted off of...in grand style and an entertaining way, sure, but plummet it did.

Disagree BC. I saw it today too and thought it was great. Another Marvel character that you instantly grabs your interest and compassion and makes you care about them and their problems as much as them saving the world. Everybody seems just about right in their roles and I though Keaton made an excellent villain. There was action, humor, and a whole bunch of references to the other Marvel films. It might have tried a little bit too hard to be funny and cute at times and I wish somebody would slow the action down a little so I can tell what the hell's going on sometimes but otherwise I'd put it right up there with Guardians of the Galaxy. The final, final scene was a hoot and I never saw it coming.

We've been lucky so far that the infamous levels of story-and-character-trashing SJW agendizing in Marvel the past few years, haven't translated to the big screen yet. Though I've seen signs of it creeping into the SHIELD show (albeit not to the detriment of its increasing quality yet, thank goodness. It doesn't necessarily have to destroy good work, but how they've been implementing it...  :pullhair:)

I guess the Washington monument SJW thing wasn't that big a deal to me. It was a passing reference and overall unimportant to the rest of the movie.

Favreau looking plump and old also not a big deal to me. Happy is minor secondary character that has always been played as comic relief.

I don't see how anyone can think Marvel is losing steam based on this movie. It is a critical and financial success and a far better Spiderman movie than anything we've had since 2004.

I just remember rolling my eyes and thinking, "really? You just HAD to go there and do that?" while watching it. I'm just tired of that kind of crap.

He does have good chemistry with Robert Downey, Jr. I guess his plumpness relates too much to mine, perhaps.

I guess. I don't disparage any of you for liking it, I'm just pointing out what completely rubbed me the wrong way. Potato, potatoe.

I understand BC. The line about protesting being patriotic kind of slapped me in the head for a second or two.  >:(

Wife and I caught it today and absolutely loved it. Easily one of the top four or five Marvel films IMHO and I think the best Spider-Man of them all. The whole Tony Stark as mentor played very well and Keaton was a very convincing villain. A solid, solid film and a great addition to the Golden Age of Marvel.

Blu-ray just came out, so I gave this another watch last night with the kids. One of my favorite MCU movies. Right up there with the first Guardians. Well done and lots of fun.

And Aunt May is still hawt.
