And 20 years earlier ...
Will take a look at the HOIV expansion this weekend.
Travelling to Sheffield to pick my daughter up from Uni for Christmas....yay O0
I will game though and it'll probably be Space Hulk with maybe a bit of Thief thrown in. From out and out blast the f**k out of everything to sneaky, sneaky grab what I can without being seen...
I'm staring down the barrel of several chairs that need from-the-ground-up fixing & reupholstering, so that's my "handyman," thing taken care of (oh, and car needs brakes too).
Otherwise, I'm still shooting e-people via RO2/Rising Storm and the new kid on the block, Rainbow Six: Siege. Just dl'ed Siege this morning and have only made it through one of the training missions and I'm already in love with the destructible environment. :bd:
I'm drinking scotch, unless it warms up somehow...sun supernovas or something.
Not sure what I'll play, but it will likely be a standby: Scourge of War: Gettysburg, CK2, Rome 2, Shogun 2, Medieval 2, etc.
I've had a hankering to get back into War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition, but no way do I have the brain cells to do that tonight.
Probably be a busy weekend prepping for Xmas, but hoping to do Waterloo Session tomorrow afternoon with Asid's gang. A little bit of World of Warships and Civ VI thrown in as well.

Been eyeing the newest Thief for awhile, curious about your opinion on it. I loved the first two, and while the graphics are a little rough there still quite playable modded. Just curious how good the actual stealth is and if there's multiple ways to get to an objective or is it a strict on rails path.
Playing wise, well since I'm on vacation until Jan. 3rd after today, \m/.. other than holiday stuff and minor in house small fix it's I should have some gaming time :bd:. I have one CSME pbem still going with Jason, the other 3 are done, so Ill finish that up and then probably a bunch of spacehulk, not sure what else.

Thief is very good. I originally gave it 30 minutes and closed it down...I'm not big on sneaky games. However, on the say so of someone around these here parts, I gave it another go and am enjoying it very much.
I think there are multiple ways to do things...like noisy or secret and various ways to get into a place...though it is on rails a bit, The variations on how to do something are limited I think. But it's very enjoyable. I played the first chapter twice because I saw at the end of the first pass I had missed some items and also had been noisier than I had wanted.
I give it a O0 O0
PD....awesome song choice and perfect for this thread! I'm thinking of getting SoW: Waterloo on sale for the holidays at Matrix. Or do I get the HoI4 DLC? :o
I forgot about the song and having listened to it, I think it was in something I watched recently.....??

It has been posted here before but I thought it was fitting as it is almost a year ago the lead singer died.

Eh. Space Hulk: Left 4 Dead isn't grabbing me as much as I thought it would. The game is clearly set up to run on a controller, but it refuses to detect the controller I got specifically for Windows long ago. And as others have noted, the game just really doesn't expect you to be giving orders to your bot-team, although I appreciate them being programmed well enough to take up position on an open door and guard a corridor as I go by. I'm not likely to end up spending a lot of time on mp, for various reasons, so... I wonder if it's too late for me to do a Steam refund. :-\
Which leaves me over doing other things this weekend! :D No doubt high on the list, will be continuing my LOTR:BFME2:TROTWK AAR, Khazâd du-bekâr. I've about got a handle on how best to summarize the next fight.
I would have continued already with this, but a few days ago I discovered that the version of Word I'm running on Win8.1, absolutely refuses to open a file larger than 512Megs -- it can save that file, and so work with that file, but won't open that file. Nor will it warn you that you're saving a file too large for it to open in the future.
In related news, that means the AAR thread is running at half a Gig in text and screenies already! :o \m/
Fortunately, the AAR so far is already archived here; and more fortunately, WordPad will open a Word doc too large for Word to open. :crazy2: Which means I didn't have to drag-and-drop a bunch of screenshots into new doc files. So I spent a whole night methodically creating and saving multiple doc files for a new archive so I won't have to worry about crossing that dreaded threshold again.
Playing through a new Age of Charlemagne campaign as the Lombards. About 35 turns in and really enjoying it so far. Will also be reading up on Knights of Honor and maybe start a campaign there, as well as the new medieval/fantasy RTS that I just picked up at Steam on sale for about 3 dollah - the name of the which escapes me right now...:/
SH: Deathwing, WOFF: UE, Polaris Sector, Astroneer and if Star Citizen 2.6 is released, definitely some Star Marine!
More PBEM FlashPoint Campaigns: RS with OJsDad.... his Brits are trashing my shiney T-80's :hide:
More PBEM Plan Orange VASSAL with SDR.... My USN is doing a little better this time around... still not feeling the love for the game though... maybe it's like SDR said and the system is better in Empire of the Sun.
Started having fun in Stellaris again.. but the current galaxy has us all bunched in one corner... I hate that... Setup was me, 10 other starters and 2 fallen. 6 of us starters are all in the same 1/5 of the four armed spiral galaxy. :P
More testing for LnLT Solo module.
Might pick up the new Tank on Tank bundle... or wait for it on iOS as it seems a perfect fit for the iPad.
Holiday bonus has hit the bank so I will be spec'ing out my new PC to build during holiday.
Also will reward myself with a 12 yr Macallan single malt...also to keep me warm.
Beyond that...Heroes of the Storm, Path of Exile, and Witcher 3 along with anything else that may tickle my fancy.
Good, old, stand-up strategy DC: Case Blue by day and fantasy, sneaky, killing things Pillars of Eternity by night. \m/
Vol de L'Aigle KS -- Made it all the way to the top of Day Four!
CMx2 PBEM
JTS Renaissance PBEM
JTS Jena PBEM
JTS SB:WWI PBEM...hopefully...if we can get an annoying PBEM bug fixed...
CM:ME toonament PBEM
I think I've FINALLY got the SoW:WL KS mod running properly (thanks, Asid) so I'd like to try that.
Depending on schedules, I may try and see if any of the GHs are actually on Steam when I manage to get on to play Deathwing. Immense potential there. Definite gift for my son for Xmas. I almost feel guilty buying him a game "for him" knowing I'll expect him to partner up later the same day to go hammer some 'stealers.
How exactly does Vol de l'Aigle work?
I've always wanted to see a very multi-player game where you didn't know where your own troops were or what they were doing (let alone the enemy). FOW on all of your own troops, except the ones you could see from your saddle.
@Philippe: It's played on a scale map taken from a slightly-after-period atlas that the game's author found. Each player is a corps commander with one being designated C-in-C -- typically Napoleon and one of his adversaries (or two in the case of Austerlitz, Leipzig, &c.).
Units are drawn onto the map and expected to march at march rates and cover roughly-approximate march distance. The smallest unit is the division.
The game being run here: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?board=56.0 (Six Days in October) is being managed via e-mail and is clipping along rather nicely. Orders are issued via e-mail and players are on their honor to communicate only via dispatch unless they get close enough to one another to talk.
I'll let players comment re: what they think so far (some in the game had previous experience with the system), but, as always with KS, one of the greatest strengths is the brutal fog of war. I've had more than one commander at a loss as to where a precious division or corps was and some further players wondering where the opponents they were chasing had gotten off to.
As the umpire, I always enjoy the pants of these things. It's why I run them.
Best,
Jim

it's been a blast running it but I genuinely thought running your own business would give you more free time not less and it's been a terrible burden trying to spend time with my daughter especially at weekends where retail equals peak profits but also peak daughter time
I think I'll go back into the herd - telecoms company are recruiting broadband engineers in the new year and network installation is my thing really
Although an old, good friend has asked if I'd like to come on board with a new venture - she's starting an escort agency and I have a few ideas
A more obvious choice is impossible.
Yeah, the restaurant business is hell on a hard cracker...
Embrace your future:
And why can't restauranting and an escort agency go together? I can't think of anything more appealing than being served while you're being serviced. "You want a 'roll' with that order"? :bd:
Looks like I'll be trying out Franchise Hockey Manager 3 and Stars In Shadow this weekend, for my casual turn-based gaming time.
Also probably do some World Of Warships with the usual ne'er-do-wells around here. ^-^ Multi-player fix.

^The game I couldn't remember is Kingdom Wars 2. Also, unexpectedly, I am downloading a huge mod for Skyrim called Enderal.

I took Martok's advice and started playing Stellaris again. I think I'm hooked. :D
Mainly CMANO for me this weekend. Scenario work (lua scripting, YAY *sarcasm*) and playing around with the new laser weaponry in the beta. I can't be the only one who wants to take the new laser weaponry and add it to a school of tuna or a a pod of whales.
I was thinking of starting a new CK2 game but then I read there is another DLC on the way so I think I'm going to wait. I'm kind of happy that there are only 1-2 more DLCs planned, then maybe I can start and finish a game without new content ruining previous saves.
Elite and Stellaris are possibilities as well.
My tricked out Lombards head out to knock the filthy heathen Avars about the ears.

Hm, my Steam refund for Left 4 Deathwing will be going through -- although I wish everyone who likes the game the best! :bd:  -- and now I must consider how to spend this sunk cost in the Steam Winter sale...
Meanwhile, as the erstwhile and randomly assigned Napoleon in the Six Days In October game, let me say that... ...... that I can't really talk about my experiences in an open forum yet because literally anything I say could be used as information by the enemy. :peace: (I tried to think of five or six general things and struck down each one. I guess... that's something usefully descriptive I can say about the experience, which can't be used by the enemy?!)
But I'm really enjoying it, and I hope I'm doing well by my French expedition posse so far. :arr:

Turned out that I'm working on / playing a CMANO scenario: UK versus a CIA coup in the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria) in 1958. The UK doesn't know they are fighting the CIA so its UK/Soviets vs US/UAR and both sides are going to use nukes ASAP on Crete and Cyprus and maybe Libya (the UK had large forces in Libya in the late 1950s).

We just got slashed by Slashy.
Fired up two games I haven't played in many a moon. My regular Civ partner got tired of getting his ass handed to him by the AI, so, he suggested Warlock. I was more than willing to oblige.
I also put Medieval 2 Total War on the hard drive. I'm in a short campaign, hold 15 Regions and eliminate Portugal and the Moors. Was building my base when France started declaring on me. The second time, they brought Portugal into the war, too. And right in the middle of that second war, the Pope called a Crusade. A lull in the fighting allowed me to send a Crusader army. After a 6 month siege, Antioch fell to the Spanish forces. Trying now to upgrade my forces to take Bordeaux. The Pope will reward me with 2500 Florins if I do.
Trying to plow through the simple CMANO scenarios so I can do the CMANO LIVE series for youtube.
I am also debating doing some tutorial videos on the game, since the baloogan series is...kinda lacking IMO

I enjoyed playing Spain more in Medi 2 TW than any other faction. I managed a win in the long campaign but, it's really tough in the beginning fighting-off the Moors and watching your back with the Frenchies and a couple of times I was nearly out of the game completely.

And then some Ironclads II: Pacific War. Very restful and ironclad-free so far. My two little Chilean gunboats were pretty much obliterated in a few minutes by two big, fast steamers zooming along at 12 knots versus me chugging at 6.8. Bang! Bang! My boats got all sooty and sank.

The funny thing is I usually play the Holy Roman Empire in M2. I expand into Italy quickly and then the Pope cobbles together some sort of Sicily/Venice/Milan/Hungary/Poland alliance and it all goes to pot. I was hoping to avoid that by playing Spain :(

Does anybody know how I can get experience safely for my merchants in Medieval 2 TW? Every one of my merchants have been gooched by someone else's merchant and 550 Florins a pop ain't cheap to keep putting them back in the field.
Yes - send them to a really isolated town or city. There was one I used to visit at the southernmost part of the grand campaign map - in Africa, IIRC - and no other merchants would make it out there. I think I would trade in i ory and after a while would get the merchant some great experience with some good cash coming in too. The settlement was Timbuktu I think. I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I can remember this...
And no papal aliens there either.
Yes, what worked for me was to put my new-born Merchants close to the center of my empire where I could see everything coming close by-- spies and Watch Towers are really good for this. If any other Merchant comes close with more experience, I hustle them into a nearby city where they're safe until the other guy passes by, then back out to where they were. It takes some time to get enough experience for them to survive on their own and then only did I send them afar. If you have an Assassin with a lot of experience, you can use them to guard nearby Merchants and whack the threatening ones but the other Merchants faction sometimes will react hostilely to this and you may start a war.
Merchants earn the most from mines so if you have some in your territory it makes a good place the let them experience-up until they all ready to go out on their own. The further away from your capital they go, the more the items they trade will usually earn-- like spices, dyes, amber in the east, and slaves.
If you're playing as Spain and you get far enough to discover the Americas, there's a ton of gold, silver and other high-value trade items there. A good Merchant can bring in 300 every turn easily from there. But, keep them someplace safe first until they get some good experience.
Innocently playing Polaris sector I was rudely interrupted by a steam sales rep
He explained that there was a new 4x to be considered - stars in shadow, I watched a few lets plays and was impressed and for just 12 pounds I couldn't resist, I'm liking it so far and we'll see how it goes

Thanks for all the good advice on M2 merchants fellas!
See MD trying to turn this back into a normal, human conversation? See him being the grown-up? Respect.
Hehe...assstache...

What I posted and what I originally typed are not the same thing ;)
Maybe 'Assstaches' could be a new commodity traded for great profit in some circles by MD's merchants? If you succeed in cornering the market, you could be the "Assstache King" in fact. I can't imagine who would want to buy one but you wouldn't want to be without one if they suddenly start to run out.
Don't abuse your dongle...you'll go blind. :DD
I had actually heard that merchants were porked and it was best to not even use them.
This could be why I've never won a campaign in M2TW.
Anyway, I've never even thought of them. I think, maybe, I'm doing it wrong. Standard with me and Total War.
Merchants were very frustrating for me in the game too. I kept losing them until I figured-out how to hide them until they were survivable on their own. I remember playing as HRE and the region Vienna is in has gold. So I took it, built the mines and then parked my merchants on them until they got some good experience. I protected them with spies and assassins. The region became my 'Merchant Nursery'.
I used them all the time for extra cash, they definitely work.
