Personally I like the version with Harrison Ford Naration. The Director's Cut is mostly what you find everywhere that lacks it. Either is worth watching. I believe i read somewhere Harrison ford is on board with this new one too.

Well, it feels like Blade Runner. I've always loved Vangelis' score from the original and this new film sounds like it pays homage to that.

Maybe they will finally incorporate Mercerism, though it will probably end up as some kind of gov't/multinational conspiracy.

It was such a big part of the novel. I've always thought it was a shame they didn't incorporate it into the film.

Well, them and Scots. You can't really blame the Scots, given the climate and their propensity for being miserable. All the rain in the film reminds them too much of Scotland.

It was a duck and run comment - but only because I know it's revered.

I have actually seen it. I didn't see it "back in the day", so I don't have the rose tinted glasses everyone else has  :peace: But I sat and watched it recently. Whilst not a terrible film, it just was meh. I'd love to tell you what was bad about it but just don't recall. Special effects were terrible...flying cars just dropping in by crane obviously and some ridiculously under-pressured steam coming out the bottom. Granted, "back in the day", that wasn't particularly bad - but watching it now - without the wow from the past - makes it look ummm.

The story didn't make any sense. We had this guy who was amaze balls at spotting replicants who was sooooooo amaze balls that he was called back to find some rogue replicants - only thing was, he had to ask 50 questions before he could actually decide whether they were or not - often resulting in the deathness of the questioner.

As for Harrison Ford - he really, really can't act. Sorry - but it's true. He's been in some good films - but the films were good.

Well as for harrison ford's acting--this is probably the best film to allow any acting in. most of his other films was centered around action. I believe I read he was discovered when he was a doorman --- and the director liked his looks. But overall most of the big name actors really can't act. Most just pout through a movie---Willis, Stallon--it works okay for action flicks---as for females it's even easier--inflate your lips with botox and wear tight leather....guys have to try harder.

I'm a bit iffy on Gosling being a Blade Runner.  But I'll wait & see.  I just couldn't get into that one movie, in which he's some quiet getaway-driver-for-hire.  People seemed to think he played a brilliant quiet tough guy in it, but I was completely "meh".

Kinda agree with opinions that someone like Tom Hardy would've been a better option.

Why his partner hated him in the first movie, because the partner would lose his job to a replicant.

IIRC, that idea was actually one of the unresolved questions in the original Phillip K. Dick novel that Bladerunner is based on. It is also implied in later editions of the film when the deleted Unicorn Dream/Origami sequences were added back in to the film.

That wasn't always the case, back when they took chances on movies. Now they use their little formulas to plug in the same stupid ideas (lame love story, pandering to Asian market, utilize nostalgia to milk it further, etc.) each time, and even if a movie sucks it still makes a billion dollars. And if they make a billion each time, they have no reason to try any other formula. Except when they redo Ghostbusters and totally screw the pooch.

This.

They just choose from the same handful of plots, and jam the same kind of tired action scene focus into many.

Many of the big budget movies just draw from the same formulaic pool over & over.  Even when they're supposed to be a remake of an oldie that didn't fit those few formulae, they'll still jam in what they believe to be the tried & true go-to crap.

Old classics are often considered so because they weren't something you'd see all the time.  Apparently the orgs funding Hollywood movies are terrified of risking their millions in order to make a big blockbuster.  Settling for small gains via repeatedly running the same movies in different guises.  Even if those guises are the flayed skin of an older, and more unique, great movie.

It's a large part of the reason American moviegoer numbers have steadily dropped over the years, having been subjected to the repetition.  We've become jaded with that crap.  Whereas places like China aren't since they've only recently had many big movies playing in their theaters.

Arrival's not the only good movie he's made.  He's got a pretty strong overall filmography backing him up.  In my opinion, he hasn't made a bad one yet.

Also of note, after Blade Runner, he's the one Legendary pictures has tapped to do Dune.  He says he wants Dune to be the film he's remembered for, and his passion for the projects he's worked on has been more than palpable.  So yeah, I'm really pulling for him to keep succeeding.

Hmm.  Now here's a curious thought.
For a philistine who has never seen Bladerunner, is it better to see the original, with the voice over happy ending, and then the Director's Cut?
Or skip the original and only see the Director's Cut?
I can't see any point in seeing them out of order, so that's not worthy of discussion.

The Directors Cut and Theatrical versions of Blade Runner are almost entirely different films thematically even if they share 95% of the same footage. They have very different interpretations about who and what Rick Deckard is.   The voice over in the Theatrical is also really beyond awful, and you can tell Ford has no desire to be doing it.

The Director's cut is vastly superior, and is from everything I heard the version of the story that the sequel is following.

The Final Cut is probably the one to see. It's Ridley Scott's preferred version and answers the film's core question.

A Ghostbusters reboot-reboot set in the Blade Runner universe. Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd are put into suspended animation like in Demolition Man, only to be awoken to deal with the greatest ghost ever known to mankind: the shadow of Harrison Ford's career. ;D

Maybe Gosling will turn-out to be Ford's long-separated son that then kills him like his other kid, Kylo Ren did. "Father, will you help me"? This time say, "Hell No"! And then blast that little shit before he does you. I'd pay $12 to see that.

I should add that despite his sourly sarcastic opening monologues (yes, there are two such opening monologues, before the episode intro even rolls), MovieBob actually liked the film and felt pretty satisfied by it.

This review argues that it's probably better than the first one.

Went to a late evening show.

Quite enjoyed it.

If you're looking for an action movie, this isn't it.  The movie's long, and a slow burner.

But it was a beautifully dark world, and lets you soak up that sweet dystopian flavor.  Also - not for those who dislike dark moody shit.  I was locked in for the whole 2 hours and 44 minutes, or thereabouts.  Soakin' it up.  Immersed in it.

In other words, if you enjoyed the original Blade Runner, you'll enjoy this one.  Go see it.   :bd:

Hollywood didn't sodomize the property with it's cookie cutter bullshit in this sequel, as they've done to so many remakes & reboots in recent years.  Feels true to the original.   8)

...but thought the pacing was too langorous. Or however the French spell that word. Their general comments suggest agreement with "Mr. Sunday": arguably better than the original.

And they hate nearly everything.   ;D

I was concerned about the runtime, before going in.  But I made it all the way through, and was glued nearly the whole time.  Except part of what passes for a weird sex scene lead-in.  No actual sex scene, though, so no foul.

Even if you thought the original movie was decent, but very flawed, I think you'd like the new one much better.

**

I do recommend watching the 3 shorts on YouTube, before going to see it.

Or, at least, the two live-action shorts.  Don't need to, but I think it helped solidify some of the background details that the movie only very briefly mentioned, and may not have expressed well enough to understand some bits.

While there is a couple moments where the movie gives a callback to earlier things, it still often depends on the viewer remembering earlier bits to get that "Ahh-ha!" reaction.  Seemed to have less hand-holding than many big budget movies today, which is great.

saw Bladerunner (original) on Monday
on the projector in the man cave to get into the mood and refresh what was Bladerunner all about in detail

saw Bladerunner 2049 yesterday eve.

GrogAdvice
your best approach to see the movie is: like if your in the internal mood for going to an vernissage of modern art with interlude sessions of modern dance theater Pina Bauch Style. or some other heavy culture stuff
Its Art, its strenuous and it takes its time.... its not a SiFi flick, its not popcorn, and the 180° opposite of let's say a Transformers or Bond movie or such refreshing lighthearted entertainment
If you know that before, it is enjoyable! Not as cheap escapism entertainment more as an (art)experience.
(think Apocalyse Now Redux  ...the last two third)

What added to my movie eve was that it was shown in an old cinema not in the multiplex and the large old art-deco theater-style room was fricking cold, which added somehow to the atmosphere
(uncomfortable without jacket and to narrow with it)

The art design of the movie is great,   ... a good transition from 2017 to 2049 in the Bladerunner universe, and you can marble at all the (disturbing, often Kafkaesque) scenes and details.

and so capturing the dystopian feeling very well. Also it does a trick with the pace on you to get you into the dystopian unsettled mood yourself. its hart to describe: all shots are a just a tiny bit tooo long, just as if the frame freeze sometimes and you are (kind of forced) lookin at a painting, then the scene continues. its not boring, its kind of a surly intended mind trick.
Also with the fitting audio, there seems to be no film music, there are back ground noises (industrial, and drone) and often a total silence! (so quiet you could hear a pin drop - literally in the quite empty on a Tuesday cinema)

The plot is developing slow but continues and had twists too.

Overall it was a good experience, and i am not sad for the time or the 9€ spend.
i was entertained but in a different way, felt not unwinded more like coming from a lengthy lecture instead

acctingman, don't worry
you may like it, now were you don't expect a casual fast paced SiFi action firework

there is action too, suspense, shootouts, chases and even a chuckle-moment here and there too.
the artifical-holoprojection girlfriend of the protagonist is hot and also the female killer, who is always about to get him, has something... i dig her more then the silly puppet, (i like cold and dangerous women ;) )
the Bladerunner world is plausible and immersive.

but it is slow paced, scenes often even very slow compared to contemporary standards of only split-seconds long scenes edited together, inspired by MTV music video clip art.

i didn't felt the 2h 44 minutes , was never bored, but at the end exhausted not refreshed, more thoughtful then unwinded.

I really liked this - and I wasn't a huge fan of the first one, having only seen it a year or so ago for the first time.

But this one  O0 O0 O0

Finally got to see it today.  The movie's freaking awesome.

The ad campaign was absolutely not representative of the final product, if that's holding anyone back.

It may be a bit slow for some people's tastes, it gravitates a lot more towards philosophical questions and detective work than action or excitement.  It doesn't hold the audience's hand or even tie up a lot of loose ends.  It's both an ugly and beautiful thing at the same time, intentionally.

Not at all surprised it's failing at the box office though.  It has a distinct lack of frenetic action with explosions, body humor, zany sidekicks and sight gags.

Anyway, if you love Science Fiction Drama with a touch of film noir, I can't recommend it enough.

Good to know. Does anyone get their fingers broken one at a time in this one? If not, that's fine by me cause mine still hurt from seeing it the first time.

There's plenty in the film to make you say ouch.  It's bloodier than the first.

Some hand ouchies are definitely involved.

I had stayed out of this thread until a chance to see the flick, and finally did. At a premium theatre too, with Laser projector and top notch audio, 60 speakers around the room or something like that.

Before, I also watched the Final Cut with the kids. They approved, and went to see 2049 at the opening night. The older one went to see it the second time. A most gorgeous film, was all they said, as I had warned them that if they give out any spoilers I will cut them off from any and all inheritance. Not that they would want my stock of board games anyhow, but they obliged, the good kids that they are.

So, yesterday I finally went and watched it. Kids were worried before: "you can't watch this at home, this is premium theather stuff dad".

And so it was. Wow. Simply. Stunning.  :o

And there was a line in Finnish as well, to top it off. Tää jätkä on Blade Runner. Se on vitun vaarallinen. Annetaan sen olla.   O:-)

I'd even say that, if you like film noir with a touch of sci-fi, this is it. If ever there's a prequel, Humphrey Bogart would fit in just nicely  O0

"Here's looking at you, Kid". "Now I have to kill you cause you've lived too long". Could work.  :coolsmiley:

The visuals are certainly wonderful, and definitely something you want to see in the theater.

I think the reason I really liked it was due to the way the characters were portrayed.  The subtle dreariness of their lives, and the way many of the characters each have a certain social need that's not actually being realized, or mistakenly so.  Fortunately such undertones in the movie aren't brutally or clumsily force fed to the viewer.
