I'm quietly hopeful for this movie. I was really impressed with Denis Villeneuve's Arrival.

Good to know. I've been thinking of watching 'Arrival' this weekend. After 'Awesome Mixtape #2', that is.

Caribou are awesome however 'Arrival' was not. To me anyway. I can't justify my dislikes without major movie spoils but the whole world-wide reaction thing struck me as very unlikely. And the aliens weren't hot, naked chicks with laser rifles.  >:(

Arrival's not the only good movie he's made.  He's got a pretty strong overall filmography backing him up.  In my opinion, he hasn't made a bad one yet.

Also of note, after Blade Runner, he's the one Legendary pictures has tapped to do Dune.  He says he wants Dune to be the film he's remembered for, and his passion for the projects he's worked on has been more than palpable.  So yeah, I'm really pulling for him to keep succeeding.

Hmm.  Now here's a curious thought.
For a philistine who has never seen Bladerunner, is it better to see the original, with the voice over happy ending, and then the Director's Cut?
Or skip the original and only see the Director's Cut?
I can't see any point in seeing them out of order, so that's not worthy of discussion.

The Directors Cut and Theatrical versions of Blade Runner are almost entirely different films thematically even if they share 95% of the same footage. They have very different interpretations about who and what Rick Deckard is.   The voice over in the Theatrical is also really beyond awful, and you can tell Ford has no desire to be doing it.

The Director's cut is vastly superior, and is from everything I heard the version of the story that the sequel is following.

The Final Cut is probably the one to see. It's Ridley Scott's preferred version and answers the film's core question.
