Title: The Future of the Total War Series
Post by: Gusington on June 07, 2017, 05:11:43 PM
Don't get too excited, this blog post dated June 6 is more vague than anything...but it gets the imagination going  :buck2:

https://www.totalwar.com/blog/what-the-teams-are-working-on-07-06-17/

The way they divide the teams up between 'historical' and 'historical flashpoint' etc. can get a little vexing too. Sounds like they are still planning on releasing historical expansions for existing games.

That cover picture looks like medieval 3? Teutonic Knights? But that's probably the flashpoint team (whatever that is), because the new total war historical game cannot be a period they have done before.
Perhaps that is the expansion they are doing.I guess the concept art could be a lithuanian, but with a roman style chain mail set?? Maybe not. The Lithuanians did have very old gear.

My hunch on the historical content is something involving Germania for Rome II.

Hmmmmm...Vexed....What next?  It looks like you get:

1) more Warhammer
2)More Attila
3) Some Vikings
4) Some Flashpoint Knights
5) Some "historical" thing they have not covered...which could be anything but Rome or Attila or Napoleon or Japan whatever they want to think of as
"Medieval" or the "Long 18th Century"...but leaves say, Pre-Columbian MEso-America, China, Africa, India, anything after the Middle Ages and before the long 18th Century (you could stop the Middle Ages at say Guttenburg and not start the 18th century until the first hot air balloon giving you at least 300 years of game time full of Roundheads and Turks and whatnot...)
Considering I was going to not do any more Total War and then the Shogun Demo changed my mind...this could all be good or bad, but at least they are still trying.  Most of their games have had some good moments so I remain cautiously optimistic.

Please God no.

Why don't they just make a billion people happy and move on to Medieval III at this point...?  That would still let them include vikings.

There's a way they could sort of solve all their problems at once:  do Medieval III with a new engine, but set up the backstory to make it clear
that the whole thing is just a nightmare inside the mind of a Lizard Man (I think that's a semi-legit Warhammer creature -- if not subtract 2 from the
plus nine basic chance of a nightmare and add 3 for a word with a z -- or a 'z' -- in it -- move yourself up two steps and make a free re-oozing area spell on yourself at plus five to be "unbearable" and go poop on something else as long as it is not a vampire giant)  that way:
1) it is still warhammer
2) but the actual "game" is just a "game" in a nightmare
3) so its not really Medieval III
4) BUT it would be identical (at least from the viewpoint of an actual customer) to what would otherwise be Medieval III as long as you turn off the "flashpoint" "Arena" and "Glugglug" options) and the occasional "greenflash" from the purely nominal inner world of the Lizard man where this is all supposedly (wink-wink) happening and the need for the Lizard man you are "inhabitting" to get up in the middle of the night or something.

QuoteHISTORICAL TEAM

Development on the next major historical release continues apace, with the team focusing on some fantastic UI and environmental work recently to capture the mood of this unique setting, that we've yet to explore in any previous Total War game.

Other areas that are progressing nicely are the important character relations that occur between the major personalities in the game. Now the designers can start modelling the various interactions and gameplay impacts the proposed features will have. Elsewhere, the campaign map is starting to come together in some new and visually exciting ways. Obviously, it will help set the tone and immersion for the whole game, and the artists have done an incredible job in realising the style we're going for.

From the above:

The game is set in a major historical period not covered by the Total War series before. Meaning it's not antiquity, medieval or colonial. Which only leaves major historical periods such as pre-history, Victorian, First World War, Second World War or Cold War.

There will be major personalities in the game. Generals / Heads of State. Interactions between Generals? Nope, so Heads of State.

"UI and environmental work recently to capture the mood of this unique setting". So unique setting means it's pretty specific and distinctive = instantly recognizable from just looking at the UI.

My money is on one of the world wars. I'd like to think It's WW2.

Ugh.

You'd hear me bitching like some guys do about having a Warhammer series.

Obviously they're doing a viking offshoot from Attila.  Because vikings are the new zombie fad.   :-\  I just hope it has as wide a geographic scope as possible, for the period, and isn't such a small focus that it seems like a mini-campaign DLC.

I'd be a bit surprised if they push the Total War series into the 20th century.  It's always been about old-school line battles.  I can only imagine how poorly suited a TW game engine would be to more modern warfare.  But it doesn't stop the usual suspects asking for it.  :idiot2:  Maybe there's a small chance they'd attempt WW1, but I still think it would be a mess.  WW2?  Would just be a train wreck of a money grab.

For the one that's not been done before, I'm still expecting a renaissance one.  Or possibly thirty years war?  I think they'd be interesting, and fit the line battle style of the TW engine.  Or Ancient China.  Or Bronze Age.  Maybe even Victorian, which could be cool, but that would be hitting the limits.

With numerous interesting candidates, I'd be very disappointed if their next "new" historical setting was one that's been regularly used in strategy PC games.

I am also still expecting the Renaissance. I am not expecting anything in the 20th century.

I am surprised they are still working on Attila content, too, zombie Vikings, etc.

There are customized mods for Fall of the Samurai that cover the ACW in custom battles. No campaigns as far as I know.

Proper Renaissance, or China (any of several distinct periods), would make the most sense; and my betting money would be on China

Reasons! -- in no particular order.

1.) Three Kingdoms period is popular outside China.

2.) The fans have been expecting and asking for China for... literally decades now?  :dreamer: Aside from LotR/Warhammer, this has been the biggest request.

3.) Super-distinctive artwork, so it looks great in the TW engine. Which also always helps marketing.

4.) Doesn't require reworking the engine much if at all: functionally it would be equivalent to Shogun 2.

5.) Plenty of distinct periods to DLC.

6.) Plenty of distinct neighbors to play with, originally and/or by DLC.

7.) Wuxia means they can do crazy fantasy units as much as they want, ideally by DLC. (Or just the equivalent of flaming war pigs and sword saints.)

8.) Opens the door eventually to India, which would be an obscure but highly exotic and deep TW experience that hasn't been done before.

Note that TW:India would have all the same franchise expansion/milking advantages as China, except for less popular call for it: massive and varied land area with colorful fringe neighbors, colorful artwork, lonnnnnnnng history to draw multiple periods from, doesn't need specially new mechanics, and plenty of fantasy potential for expansions of that sort.

To either TW:India or TW:China could be added a vastly huge (potential or actual) new market thirsty for quality games respecting their cultures.

While I wouldn't mind having a Three Kingdoms TW, I'd rather have a historical one than a fantasy Wuxia version with flying sword ladies & such.   :)

Besides... some of these guys were about to break out the torches & pitchforks for having a Warhammer fantasy one.  Could get physical if a new TW did another fantasy genre.  :hide:

I am also still expecting the Renaissance.

Argh, that period got by me. It could be -fits all the clues.

Well, Total War As Is couldn't do WW2, but engine change is not unheard of.

I would revel at the thought of playing out each battle on a mini-version of each location with WW2 forces. Current WW2 games have either strategic play or tactical play, never both. If they could pull off both, with accuracy, with all the usual TW bells & whistles, I would be very happy.

I don't really think that the TW style of game engine would be appropriate for games later than 19th century. However, ECW or 30YW would be nice.

Just my opinion, of course.

China would be cool.  Also Wars of the Roses and perhaps Game of Thrones would be neat as well.

I can't recommend strongly enough against WW1 or 2.  And, while ACW might be fun for one-off battles, I just don't think the operational map would work to really capture the nuances of ACW.

There is a good mod "For King or Country" for MTW2, being the ECW. Sauron has played the 30YW mod for MTW2 and I know he recommends it. Both can be found at the TWCenter IIRC.
