Just playing through the tutorial and im impressed so far, in fact more than that, im liking it very much, i have just passed tutorial number 3 (sink ship, kill planes, dont lose too many planes) and have a few questions for the enlightened gentlemen here before trawling the Paradox forums:-
1 - i lost 2 planes to out of fuel - is there no auto return to base or do i need to manage that?
2 - is there a description anywhere of the unit uses/descriptions - i had 4 F18 strike aircraft but their designation was 'electronic warfare' - so............ what do they do, and how do they do it?
3 - is ground attack possible - i wanted to take out the airbase in Scotland
thanks for any advice

1 -- You can send up a tanker to refuel or you can click on the plane, click on the Movement planner...there is a RTB button in the upper right corner. Been a while since I played, so I don't remember if there is an auto-return or a warning msg about low fuel.
2 -- not sure about this one. might want to check the forums
3 -- Ground strikes are very possible. If some of the available planes aren't already set up for a ground strike, you can change out the plane loadouts on the flight deck. The planes will gray out until they are reloaded and ready to go...

1 - i lost 2 planes to out of fuel - is there no auto return to base or do i need to manage that?
The planes will usually return to base when they reach Bingo fuel state. They can sometimes run out of fuel enroute, but this is rare. What might have happened is that Auto-Evasion was enabled and they were fired upon. When they went to high speed to evade, they did not have sufficient fuel for the return voyage.

There is no function within the game that shows you the capabilities of your units. The best you can do is call them up and hover the mouse over their weapons and such details. The pop-up window information is all there is.

All planes have a bingo fuel setting. When they hit it they will automatically return to base; however the calculation is a bit off, and I have seen them occasionally run out before they get home. That usually only happens if they have to fly a long way back or if I make them fly faster. To conserve fuel, try to keep them at military cruise or whatever it's called - that's the most efficient setting. I can't remember whether altitude had anything to do with it...it may be something they were talking about maybe implementing but I'm not sure.
Quote2 - is there a description anywhere of the unit uses/descriptions - i had 4 F18 strike aircraft but their designation was 'electronic warfare' - so............ what do they do, and how do they do it?
There certainly isn't anything in game, despite a clamour for it on the Paradox forum. However you can change a plane's loadout before they take off, although it can take a lot of time before they're ready again.
Quote3 - is ground attack possible - i wanted to take out the airbase in Scotland
Yep - see Steve's answer.
thanks you guys - ill trust the system to look after the bingo fuel guys
'electronic warfare' led me to believe they could sit above the enemy and jam stuff - shrug, and the E3 - i kn ow what it is, or at least what its supposed to do, but how do i know if its doing its job right?

That's exactly what they do; check out the "special weapons" tab of each plane, you'll see an option to use jammers. If I recall correctly.

They're great at detecting stuff. If you're detecting units when none of your other assets ought to be able to, it must be the E3 doing its job. You may as well always tell them to fly at maximum altitude so they get maximum radar coverage.
yeah i figured id stick him up there and switch on active radar, and switch everybody elses off for super stealth

All radar coverage is not equal. I've managed to park an orbiting E3 without an escort a fair distance from anything expected, only to discover a MIG when it launches a missile -- well inside normal detection range. I've been able to accomplish the same with a couple of IL-76's. If they are high, fly in low.

+1
Generally speaking nothing should be left unescorted.
I'll often park my air escort assets at medium elevation with the radar on. This is both gamey and practical. Gamey -- I think I've figured out a tendency in the AI to send fighters against apparently-unescorted airborne radar assets. Radar on-escorts make this less likely.
Practical -- what Longblade sez.
If I have the assets, I'll fly an E3 at high elevation and an E2C Hawkeye (ok, that doesn't look right -- the propeller-driven carrier-launched early warning radar plane thingie is what I mean) at low to medium elevation. This only only helps with air targeting and identification, but also helps with spotting ship assets.
(I surmise this is a result of the lower elevation on the not-a-E2C, but it is possible it also because of better look-down naval-focused radar capacity.)
F-18 configured for electornic warfare = EA-18G Growler.
yeah...... but wassit do, and how does do it? is it best to patrol on a CAP, escort, or just be used as a well informed strike fighter?

I don't have the game (still waiting for the ability to
Save.. wtf?) but you should generally use your EW aircraft to jam in strike packages. I dunno if the game allows for this, automatically, if EW planes are assigned to Escort strike aircraft or not.
I suppose you could also try to use 'em on enemy search aircraft, in specific cases, although these aren't always so clean-cut a choice as escorting strikes and would probably only work to delay your detection a bit.

The EW suite jams radar, big and small. In terms of game play, you need to select the plane(s) and go to their "special actions" tab (I don't currently have the game installed to reference correct terminology.)
In terms of use, within the game, it is probably best used to accompany strike packages. It will theoretically reduce ship and land based search radar's capability in terms of resolution -- in other words, the can't see how many planes you have in a strike package as easily. I believe it will also degrade incoming anti-air missiles from getting a lock on any planes with the jamming sphere.
Theoretically, you could but them in an orbit over any target (land or sea) and help degrade any potential missile attacks, but I haven't tried that.
I don't find them particularly effective in the game, but I'm not sure if that's my issue or the game's.

This definitely works. There's an early mission in which, depending on the difficulty level you've set (which influences the organisation of the enemy's assets) it's almost essential to orbit and jam some ships to prevent them firing long range surface-to-surface missiles.
Just a thought. Haven't played much but are there Home-on-Jamming missiles in the game?
None that I have seen.
I know I couldn't find any HARM loadouts pre-mission builder. I haven't checked the game or the builder since the builder release.
There are HARM loadouts on the E/A-18 Growler. Unfortunately, they can be fired at targets that never radiate.

This makes me a sad panda, that doesn't wanna make more little pandas, in a Chinese zoo.
:( :(
The ability to kill non-radiating land bases with HARMs is something out of the past. You used to be able to do the same in Harpoon Classic; kill Keflavik with an infinite stream of HARMs and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. :(
That certainly convinces me that the game wasn't finished. :(
Or that it's not modelled as well as it should be.

Paradox is known to publish games before they're "ready" from a US perspective. They faithfully patch the game, but as well all know it's not uncommon for them to head out the door needing some patches.
OTOH, I interviewed the devs some time ago and they made it clear that while NWAC was going to be a strategy game, it would be somewhat abstracted and lean toward the fun side of the spectrum. I was never under the impression that we'd get a hard, hard core naval war sim.
Many of us *want* a harder core experience, but I'm not sure NWAC was meant to be that game.

I'm really looking forward to Command. I'm not really happy about there plan to lock down the database. I was planning on doing a futuristic scenario, set in the 2030's, with fighters/bombers like you saw in the movie stealth, with BBG class ships fighting it out Jutland style but with a lot more range. But the developers have said that they won't allow any of those type of units into the database that plan is out the window.

I believe they are searching for a publisher. As far as the game database, they could be planning on that. My impression however is that the guys making Command, are one "faction" of the harpoon community, and want only units/system/etc that they approve of as part of the game database. To me its a stupid and outdated idealogy. I can understand having one game database so that you don't have to recreate every unit in each scenario. But ff I want cruise missiles that can shoot halfway around the world in my scenario I should be able to mod them IMO.

I do have Harpoon. I bought the Ultimate Edition or whatever Matrix calls the combo pack that has 3 or 4 different versions all in one. I've tried getting into it but the outdated UI really turns me off. I have a vacation coming up in a few months, maybe I'll mess around with the editor then. I'll definitely keep your offer in mind.
I downloaded the demo of Harpoon and immediately got a message saying it had expired!
I only dabbled in NWAC, but what it really did is make me hungry to boot up Harpoon again.
I've heard NWAC called "a more detailed Defcon" and I would agree with that. It's not a substitute for Harpoon at all.
@Kushan, I hear what you are saying about locking down the DB, but I have to respectfully disagree with you. I have been digging into the Harpoon DB a bit recently and it is quite remarkable. What I come away with, ultimately, is a feeling that a lot of really smart people have spent a lot of time vetting the data in there...it doesn't seem like best guesses. I like that for this type of game.
Too often I have seen in Falcon and other games where folks have wanted to mod the DB because something didn't "feel right" with no real corraborating evidence. That is no way to work a database. While you might want to create fantasy land, others will say X missile should be more lethal, or is too lethal, or Y radar should be able to detect something further out, or not so far, with no supporting evidence. This can really wreck a game. So, as painful as it is, I actually prefer to have a locked DB, but full access to the mission editor.

If this is the demo you downloaded, you might be able to get around the expiration date by simply (temporarily) re-setting your system clock to an earlier date. Try Jan 1, 2011 or 2010.

I respectfully disagree. Why should anyone care what someone else was doing on their own machine? There were some players making a War of the Worlds scenario in Harpoon. I just chuckled at it and immediately ignored the scenarios. But, that shouldn't stop those who want to try something like that from doing so. Just because your perception of reality differs from mine does not make one of us wrong/right. Being forced to play a game in just one way is never a good idea, IMO.
Harpoon tried to force players to do this a number of ways by eliminating player control. The players rebelled and complained with good reason. Why bother playing a scenario when there isn't only one possible outcome?

God Forbid, that the company would actually allow someone to try out their game before thinking about a purchase!
I don't want to get into a big argument about this, but I don't see how locking the DB suddenly makes it such that the game can only be played one way.
Quote from: Toonces on July 21, 2012, 10:13:27 PM
I don't see how locking the DB suddenly makes it such that the game can only be played one way.
Then allow me to elaborate how this might be the case. There is a perfect example of this between Harpoon and NWAC.
In both games, there are SS-N-26 Onyx, SS-N-22 Sunburn, and Kh-22 Burya missiles. In Harpoon, these weapons may be fired on Bearing-Only-Launch mode. This means that they do not need a specific target and can be fired at a point in space whereupon they activate and search for a target. However, in NWAC, they are not given the BOL capability.
So, which game is 'right'? I don't know. I always assumed they had BOL capability from what I played in Harpoon. However, the NWAC guys may have found evidence to the contrary.
Because neither Harpoon nor NWAC databases are locked, a user can simply change things to what he feels is correct and carry on. With a locked database, he is forced to play according to the perception of reality for that specific database author, right or wrong.
The demo situation for Harpoon is ridiculous. The game is expensive enough as it is - and yes, I know there are arguments for that price, blah blah - but I'm simply not going to buy a game at that price without trying it first.
Anyway, it was only a thought. I wouldn't be in a position to buy it for a long time anyway.
I don't even know what NWAC is. :P

I pre-ordered and paid full price because I like the genre and there really is a dearth of good tactical level naval warfare games out there.
I got the dreaded freeze bug on both of my PCs and the responses I got from Turbo Tape (in the beginning when they'd actually bother to respond) were rude, dismissive, and tinged with paranoia. That the debs wanted to make a game is great. That they lacked the skills and experience to successfully do so is a shame. That the game was released in such a buggy state and not effectively dealt with is the fault of the publisher. Seems like Paradox is finally recognizing their duties in this regard and will hopefully get things sorted.
The problem was not so much as they tried (and failed). It's more about how they mis-handled the aftermath of their blunders. Instead of being honest and openly addressing (and admitting) problems, they went into all manner of excuses and denials.

I went to the link listed above and explained the problem I was having with the freeze bug. Paradox responded a few days later saying that they were aware of the bug but were unable to fix it. They asked for proof of purchase and proof of bug. I provided a copy of my receipt and a link to my several posts in the Naval War forum over the course of several months.
They offered to provide one of their games as compensation so I asked if I could have a copy of either CKII-the Republic or Warlock. They gave me both. While it's a shame they couldn't get NWAC fixed, I'm very pleased with the customer service. Good job Paradox!
That is great service. Paradox are fast becoming my favourite publisher.

Is there a shortcut to launching a strike against a specific target? In Naval War Arctic Circle seems you launch each plane individually, wait for all the planes to get into the air, select them then right click to send them to a grid square. Then select the squadron again and right click with the mouse to draw a rectangle in the target area. Advance time and wait to see if they fly in the right direction to attack?
Also in Harpoon each squadron of planes would have a red circle representing the longest range standoff weapon equipped. Was very useful to be able to send in Harpoon or HARM equipped planes first, followed by a strike force with shorter ranged weapons. Is there an option to display this in Naval War Arctic Circle?

Select the unit and bring up the Weapons display menu. Click on the individual weapon from the list and it will display the range circle. If you click on another function, this range ring disappears until you re-select the weapon.
