Well you can "still" preorder but I don't care if I get a disc, because I'll back up the digital copy.  I'm a little less excited now, but I'll get it soon.  I'm in the middle of a Fate The Cursed King dungeon crawl now anywho.

How about instead of asking why we don't have one (heck, we can't cover everything!) you instead start a thread that says something like "Holy Cow! CM: Italy just dropped! W00t!"
Certainly makes the forums look more collaborative and less like you're just waiting for us to spoonfeed it all to y'all :)

Doesn't appear to be released yet.  Am I missing something?  Also, why is an expansion $55?  Seems unreasonably high to me.

As Grim said, Fortress Italy is a stand along game with upgraded CMX2 engine.  What gets me is that you will end up paying for a patch for CM:BN that brings the engine up to date.

I am eager to see what they end up charging for the patch...anything more than a couple of dollars and I imagine most people will revolt......we'll see.

It is a glass half full half empty thing to me. Plenty of games have had sequels with more features (CMBO CMBB CMAK) that could not be back ported so you have to buy the new game and live with the old one. To be able to have the new features in the old game for $10 sounds reasonable to some, and better than nothing.

Some people feel that the new features are bug fixes or features that should have been in, in the first place.

It all comes down to a question of how long between releases is it acceptable to charge for an update.

I'm sure it was much more than a year between each release of the original CM trilogy.   Looks like 2 years in between for the originals.  Aw well, if they can squeeze their steadies for more money than their previous marketing, then they may as well do it huh?  :P

I recently bought CMSF + Marines on sale for $25. I was worth a chance at that price. I would pay $10 to upgrade it to CMBN and CMFI standards.

I'm more leery of paying over $100 for a game and 3 modules over and over and over...

It won't work with cmsf..... That chapters closed

And if it is 10 dollars or any other amount to upgrade - noones going to make you pay.... If you like your cmbn just the way it is don't upgrade

I wouldn't pay $60 for Skyrim brand new. $65 For this one(physical copy) is a bit too steep for me. I'm so way behind on my CMBN games, I think I can afford to wait awhile till the price comes down a little if it ever does. But those screenies have my mouth watering.

I'm a big CM fan going way back to CMBO.  But really can't get myself excited about this one.  Seems like I would be paying full price for what I already have just with different paint jobs.  I will probably get it someday....maybe.  Now Eastern Front, early Western Front (France 40), or Pacific would have gotten me excited!!!

I like WW2 campaigns set in areas like Italy, which are often overlooked unlike the Normandy invasion - Market Garden and the eastern front.  I'm lookiing forward to getting into this one alot.  I am a little off put that they opted to make 3 seperate WW2 series rather than linking them together and making engine upgrades availible as expansion are released.  But that doesn't bother me as much as the thought that there is still the Market Garden expansion for CMBN, but it will most likely require the "non-required" update patch to CMX2 engine upgrades.

So.. are they planning to make Market Garden an expansion of the Italy version?  Or will it be a standalone that they release in 12 months, and you'll have to pay to update your Italy from then on?  :-[

Nefaro my understanding is that CMBN will be "concluded" with Market Garden.  CMFI will have a couple of expansions of its own.  CM Eastern Front will also be another stand alone with expansions.  I'm honestly confused why they insisted on making 3 seperate stand alone games as opposed to a base CM WW2 + the 8 additional expansions.

With that being said I love me some CMx2 engine games and couldn't resist purchasing the game.  Its a beauty.  Smooth gameplay, wonderful new UI and they seemed to have finally figured out shadows.  It really just is a wonderful game and yet it grates on my nerves that this was underdevelopment when Commonwealth was and yet the engine upgrades where not included with CW.  Even more so because what does that mean for Market Garden?  Will it have the upgraded engine or not?  Or will it have the old engine and force you to still purchase the new engine upgrade patch?  Or will it not work unless you first purchase the engine upgrade patch?  And what does that mean for any engine upgrades they present with the Eastern Front series or the new Modern War series?  Also it's a damned shame that the CMSF series cannot be upgraded too.

My understanding is that Market Garden is the second module for CMBN. There will be a third to be determined. You WILL have to purchase the $10 upgrade to get MG and number 3 to work. This has nothing to do with CMFI.

CMFI is already upgraded and will have 3 modules. Buying CMFI does nothing for CMBN.

What is should be is that you can buy the upgrade and not buy any modules or if you buy the modules you get the upgrade free. I guess enough people will pay whatever it takes so BFC can do as they please.
Title: Re: No thread on Combat Mission Italy Being Released?
Post by: Bison on August 04, 2012, 03:35:39 AM
Well if your going to be expected to fork over another $55 for the MG expansion and it requires the upgrade it should be included.  However I think you are correct so I'll be stuck with the choice of buying the upgrade in order to play the new content or not.  It crappy position for a customer to be put into by a developer IMHO.   And I also assume that PBEM and the other multiplayer formats will be affected too, because I'm willing to bet that the old engine and the new engine are not compatible for PBEM different game versions and all that goodness.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere the patch would require different purchase than MG and is required to play.  However, maybe BF will offer some kind of discount bundle when MG is released. Since I think the CMBN patch will be out long before the MG expansion, they are betting on most people picking up the patch immediately and then when MG is released later they won't feel as bad as spending the $55:)

Sticky in the CMFI forum about upgrade price announcement

QuoteSince I'm here making this announcement I thought it would be good to remind you all of some terminology. This will help everybody keep the facts straight and not get confused by grumblers who seem to not understand the basics. Hopefully you guys can help us keep the grumblers from spreading disinformation based on their ignorance of how things are set up:

Patch = fixes things that are technically broken or, in some cases, not working as they probably should. Never any new content. Cost = $0

Upgrade = new features or major improvements to existing features. Never any new content. Cost = $10

Module = new game content consisting of units, scenarios, and campaigns. Sometimes terrain. There are no features or fixes included which aren't also available as a free Patch or part of an Upgrade. Cost = $35 or less

Pack = new game content consisting mostly of units. As with Modules, there are no code changes that aren't also available as Patches Cost = not yet determined, but certainly less than a Module

Market Garden is a module and should be $35

We're keeping a bit mum on the details for the Italy Family until we have a chance to let the dust settle a little.

Steve

I don't get it. I bought CM:BN even though the details of the modules were not known. It is now what - two years since the game was announced, and we are all still guessing what the CM:BN family will look like ? Maybe Market-Garden, maybe two?

It is for that reason that I passed on CM:FI - I mean besides the fact that most of it will be a repeat of CM:BN etc. (I have no interest in Italian and 1943-era forces on Sicily). I don't see any reason to get the Italy stuff as very little will be new (fighting Elefants vs. Americans/British isn't enough of a draw to justify it).

Why don't they just announce what the plan is in advance, so we can know which modules we will have to buy? Unless, of course, they don't know themselves?

That's easy enough to answer.

People will buy all the latest stuff because they won't know when the next new shiny stuff will come along, or if they should wait for the next one that they'd enjoy more, that would soon be out.  Why would they purchase CMFI if there's a whole new standalone product coming out in 12 months for a theater they'd enjoy more - and then have to pay to update the current one to the same version, in addition.

Considering you don't enjoy the Italian campaign, and decided not to purchase this one, I suppose you already know this so your question was rhetorical.

Why am I not surprised the dorosh chimes in with some of his ax to grind with battle front posting.   I thought I was bad in regard to their patch proposal.  Man you need to just let it go.  It's become quite apparent that you just troll combat mission threads.

The alternative is for BFC not to provide backwards compatibility, so I'm not sure what your issue is.

The issue I raised is a genuine one.

There are two game "families" for the Second World War now running concurrently - Normandy, and Italy. There was talk, I believe, of a third, set in the Ardennes. If I had some sense of when that one was going to be released, I would have a better idea of how much money I wanted to expend on the Italian campaign. If I knew that the Bulge stuff was off the table for two or three years, it might be easier to commit to the Italy stuff, even if it really doesn't interest me much.

As it is, charging for the patch doesn't seem unreasonable, given that I will likely have no interest in Italy and they will not be getting any more cash otherwise - yet are still expending development time in making the engine upgrades backwards compatible to a game released last year. It's not great from a marketing standpoint - but one can live with the idea.

I really don't understand what all the hubbub is about this game. If you are interested in fighting battles and campaigns in Italy with the best tactical ww2 simulator, then its worth $55. That simple. For the record, its more than.yellow shermans and scout cars....the best addition is the terrain. Real big hills.and heavily wooded river valleys make for some interesting small unit scraps.

If you are happy with CM:N and you dont care about the Italian campaign, then its not worth $55. For me, endless hours of pixel combat is worth the price of dinner at Carrabas with Mrs Mikeck.

+1

I remember thinking how great Combat Mission:Beyond Overlord and Barbarossa to Berlin were (CM:BO and CM:BB for the uninitiated) but wishing - oh the times I wished - for nicer graphics...it was the one thing that let the series down...and now I have it. Fantastic looking soldiers, equipment, movement, terrain.

The Combat Mission:Shock Force "engine" (CM2?) is my dream come true. I love it. There are some aspects I don't like - but in general it's a massive leap into what I had always hoped for in CM:BO and CM:BB all those years ago.

On a side not (but still about the CM2 engine)
Meant to say the one thing that really, really has me tearing what little hair I have left out is the different hedges and levels and no indication of whether you are able to move through or not BUT being able to place a movement point there. This is rather frustrating when moving armour. As an example I moved some armour pieces into a field and moved them into another field - only to go back and see them coming back the way they entered the first field and going down a route I had no intention of them travelling! And it wasn't bocage.

Another slight annoyance with CM:N is trying to determine where there are holes in bocage for troops to move through. They are way too small and very difficult to see.

Any tips to help with this I would be over the moon!

Like I said - great game series, great engine but not without it's faults.

the suggestions on the BF forum have been to edit the 'bocage with gap' graphic to be pink, or blue, or even just a different shade of green - im sure someone actually did this for a colour blind guy - its out there if you look

It's ok UGC. Thanks for the heads up. Now I know something is out there, I'll have a browse myself.

It is still a pain though not knowing whether your tanks/mech are going to be able to go through a hedge (not bocage - which you understand they cannot go through without help).

But I'll look around. I was just venting.

As I was blowing smoke up BFs arses by saying how much I enjoyed their game and the engine - and I do - it seemed only fair I pointed out the couple of things in the engine (that stuck in my head from my game last night) that annoyed me.

Thx

lol - you are right tho, as a map maker and player, i realise if you havent made a map its very difficult at first glance to know what scenery youre facing and what can and cant go in, over or thru it - what would be nice is an interactive cursor like Civs that says - heavy forest, no AFV, slow for infantry - each piece of scenery is a tile, its only a question of that tile saying what it is - im not a programmer, this might as well be as hard as finding the cure for cancer - i dont know

You have all of the terrain you just mentioned in CMBN. If you don't believe me, open up the scenario editor sometime. You can build Mount Everest in there if you want to. At least one of the stock scenarios takes place in ... a heavily wooded river valley.

Like you say....don't understand what all the hubbub is about...

Not telling people what to buy or not buy here, just saying - if you think you need to buy CM:FI just to get 'big hills' - I'm here to tell you, you've already got them with your first purchase. Ditto "lots of trees."

QuoteIf you are interested in fighting battles and campaigns in Italy with the best tactical ww2 simulator

It's not generally considered a huge accomplishment to be first in a field of one, but then again, I grew up in an age where they only gave ribbons to the kids that came in first, second and third in the races. "Participants" got sent home with the advice that they try harder next time - not prizes.

I'm not sure but I think it's been rectified. Shermans go up in smoke, MK IVs frontal armor is tough and you can hit a Tiger all day and hope a sprocket falls off.

General misconceptions about how tank combat worked have been around since gamers started recreating it. Tank armour is only as good, or bad, as the gun trying to defeat it. The late models of the PzKpfw IV that the U.S. Army fought against in 1944-45 were not especially well-armoured, but they did have an advantage in that the American 75mm gun had a relatively weak armour piercing round. At that, the gun enabled the Sherman to go toe to toe with the PzKpfw IV. The Sherman's armour protection, and poor ammunition stowage, made it more vulnerable to return fire, a problem rectified in later production models. The Sherman suffered from not having a high-velocity gun able to penetrate the thicker armour of PzKpfw V and VI tanks, and even the 76mm guns that were increasingly common from D-Day on were often of little help. The addition of specialized ammunition into the inventory helped, and the fielding of the M26 Pershing, too late in the war, helped bring some balance to the situation.

One of the Sherman's potential advantages - the gyrostabilizer - may or may not be depicted in CM. If so, it is abstracted into the hit chance calculations. Some units disengaged the equipment because of crew unfamiliarity. The actual advantage it provided in combat is open to debate - it only stabilized the gun in the vertical plane, not horizontally, and different historians seem to differ on how useful it really was in action.

Other factors like turret speed come into play also, but again, its not clear how accurately these factors have been duplicated in CM. The developers insist there is a lot going on under the hood - the disadvantage of a computer game like CM over a boardgame like, say, ASL, with its richly detailed "miniatures" style approach, is that much of that data is hidden and one can't gain an appreciation for how the data has been assembled or what factors are in play.

You can download any number of my CM:BN scenarios from BFC's repository. My overall rating is 4.27 out of 5, including both mods and scenarios.

I'm not sure I understand the purpose of your question. Jim Dunnigan designed and sold hundreds of games yet claims never to have played any of them.

Well link some of your scenarios.  I'll give them a go.

The question is becasue often times the loudest critics don't actually play the game.  Nothing more.  Nothing less.

They're listed with the prefix "TWC" under the Commonwealth scenarios section. Any constructive feedback is welcome. "TWC: Sudden Fury" seems to have been most popular, it is also the smallest - a solo with German Jagdpanthers against a British armoured squadron. To me, it highlights what I don't particularly like about CM:BN, but others have received it more favourably than I would have. If you do 'give it a go', you can be the judge.

Good lord.  I'm struggling with the first battle.  A meeting engagement between the US and Itallians.  I think I might be pushing too hard, before my reenforcements get on scene.  It'll be take three here shortly.  I need to be more patient playing turned based than I am play rts.  Its much, much harder to correct poor decisions.   I just get to sit and watch the madness of a poor plan play out.

In that scenario, its important to not do too much too quickly....you have plenty of time. Also, make sure you keep your postpone close together so they can support one another. One platoon and your machinegun covers while another platoon moves in for an assault. When you get your half tracks, keep them back to support infantry attacks. Clear one part of the map at a time....then another. I started with the southeast, then moved north through that hill top house thing.....then swung left. Finally, keep a platoon fresh and in reserve just in case.

bounding mutually supporting platoons?

a solid force in reserve?

stable base of fire for support?

terrain-based segmentation of the battlefield for localized force-ratio overmatch?

what tactical madness is this?!

;D

Complete madness!  Except that every Italian soldier has 15/20 vision, can see through foilage at distances of up to 500 yards and has immaculate Kentucky windage gauging ablilities.

Thank Mikeck.  The first go I didn't pay attention to the re-enforcement note, so I just push without taking them into consideration.  I played the first 20 minutes again last night and got a decent foothold into the right side of the map.  LOS issue put a serious hamper on my MMG support.  I need to locate better next go.

You have a 60 mm mortar team as well. I keep them behind a small hill but close to the commander for indirect fire. Fire as I begin the assauly to pin down the enemy.

Also, "slow move" and "hunt" are your friends for moving without being detected by the enemy.

I think it's the transtition from playing RTS to TBS that is messing with me most right now.  I'm still trying to learn how to time actions between my squads to maximum effect.

Personally, I found the new CM engines to be easier to play in real-time. Unfortunately, my copy of Fortress Italy was installed on my gaming laptop, which just died, so I haven't been able to get to it like I'd want.

There is a method to the madness.

Not that my method explains *all* my madness. But I digress.

I bought the Best Buy protection plan. 3 year warranty. Fine. The cool thing is that if it has three serious breakages, they give me a new one.

Now here's the deal: I serious abuse my systems. Not in the dropped-in-a-pool-of-hot-lava sense, but in the sense that I play all kinds of beta games, heavy, graphics-intensive shooters and RTSs. And I play them hard and often. Something always breaks.

If the third break is within about 2 1/2 years, the current model of laptop is long out of production. So I get a new one. Works fairly well.

Of course, the downside to that plan is that my laptop will be out of commission for a couple of weeks every now and then.

The upside of being able to bring a gaming rig anywhere I travel, however, is worth it. So it balances out.

The conundrum of the Mad Scientist is that his plan should be so complicated that only he could carry it out, yet in retrospect, so blindingly obviously the best solution that its brilliance is unquestionable.

It is a careful balance I walk.

Mine is an Asus gaming laptop. Other than the ongoing problem of overheating, it's been fairly solid.

Mind you, I prefer to see it overheat once in a while. That keeps my mad scientist scheme rolling. If it worked properly, I'd have wasted $300 on the warranty.

I am waiting for the patch/content (I dont know what they are calling it exactly) pay for upgrade of the base game.  I would like to see how that plays out for gameplay etc.  Right now I prefer the wego system but I do run into issues in longer scenarios where I have to do gamey things like pause for 30 seconds prior to firing to conserve ammo etc. which of course screws up suppression.

Con
