Can the other Combat Mission games be far behind? Maybe one day we will finally get to buy old CM games at a reasonable price in a Matrix sale?
The first CM was one of my most beloved games ever, but at some point I got tired of the Artificial Stupidity. I've been wanting to look at their newer generation of new games but every time I start to pull the trigger I see that if I want all the DLCs I have to shell $150 or so.
Not asking this to start a firestorm but looking for an answer
I have all the original Shockforce 1 and all DLC
Never purchased shockforce 2 - just too much going on in RL
I understand that there was a discount applied for Shockforce 1 owners purchasing shockforce 2.
Is that discount over?
If I buy from Steam/Matrix does the discount still apply?
Just genuinely curious not sure if I am going to buy Shockforce 2 for the same reasons as above but if it is full price versus discounted price then that would factor into my eventual decision
Thanks

So if you have SF1 + all DLC the upgrade is $35.
Requirements
The CMSF Big Bundle Upgrade works with an original Battlefront purchased CMSF1 Base Game and all 3 original Battlefront Modules (Marines, British Forces and NATO) license keys. The new installation does not use the old CMSF1 files, therefore you do not need to have a CMSF1 installation present on your hard drive.

I just checked, and for some reason I had to reset my password, although my forum account there still works, but, after waiting for the e-mail for a while, I could enter my account, and when I order the full pack it will bill me for $35 for the upgrade.
I still wonder if I will have to enter the old licence keys, or that the payment discount settles it all with a brand new key?
I would probably wait till they send the Steam key before installing. I have horror memories from installing and licensing the Battlefront products, which I had to do several times since 2002 when upgrading to a newer computer.
Still, Shock Force was amazing, and $35 for a polished re-experience is not very much. Or would the nostalgia not survive the real experience?
Thanks for the answer just to clarify
1. previous owners can upgrade to Shockforce 2 (all in with DLC etc) for $35
2. You dont need shockforce 1 installed on your computer to purchase/do the upgrade
3. Once you have purchased the upgrade you could presumably wait until Matrix/Steam release the key(s) and install from Steam?
For $35 I just went ahead and ordered it - here is hoping that number 3 is an option above since I dont want to deal with patching etc when I install

Just an FYI, CMSF2 will also be on Steam for the first time ever. I honestly though I would see pigs fly before I saw a CM title on Steam. I'm hoping this works out for the best, but I do have my concerns.
At the very least, I do hope that there are a few members here who either haven't gotten into CM before or haven't kept up with CM due to it not being on Steam who take this opportunity to get into it or back into it. Could be some fun to be had!
Fair warning though, I suspect the game will be sold at full price. If you want to pick them up at a discount your best bet is likely to wait for a Slitherine sale. We'll see though.
I have never played a Combat Mission game.
You don't play it. More like it plays you. ;D It's not really that bad. Give the free Demo a try, they're still available aren't they, anyone?
It would really be sweet if they are workshop for all the mods, assuming this works out and the other titles follow.
Are there demos for all the titles? I'm only seeing SF2 demo in the forums. I'd like to try out the FI and FB.

Go to the "Base" game page for each one in the store, and you'll find a demo / screenshots / etc. Kind of hidden in plain site. Took me a bit to figure it out.

What I am really looking forward to is the WWII CM titles to come to Steam.
Just wanted to post this here. This is a link to a Twitch stream Matrix did today showing off Combat Mission. Steve himself does the commentary. He talks about what Combat Mission can do in general, and more specific what Combat Mission brings to the professional (read, defense contracting) world. He also narrates a small showcase battle, talks about some potential upcoming features (FASCAM artillery and the ability to watch the full replay in one go of an entire battle stood out to me) and even answers some stream questions at the end. To me it sounds like there is a lot to be excited about in Combat Mission's future.
Here is a link to the Twitch stream archive: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/707289746
Disclaimer: It wasn't entirely clear to me if the new features I mentioned are intended for only the professional version of the sim or if they will be available to the general public in the commercial version. Regardless, I still think it is exciting news.
The original CMx1 games are all available on GoG, by the way. They're all $6 or less normally. They might still be available on Matrixlitherine and thence to Steam eventually, but aren't really necessary.

While I applaud and am happy for BF in their pursuit of "professional" sales, hopefully government contracts don't cause them to lose focus on WWII titles. Other companies like Bohemia Interactive, WarfareSims and JTS have managed to balance the two somewhat competing markets well (government vs. wargamers), so my fears are probably not justified.
Considering the length of time it takes BF to release updates and patches, as well as the convoluted licensing system, their new partnership with the government seems like a match made in heaven. <:-)

Nonsense. You always get a Steam key with a Matrix purchase, and Battlefront will give Steam keys to all SF2 owners.
(you don't get a Matrix license with a key bought on Steam or 3rd seller though, but that is completely different matter).

Yes, BF's policies have improved quite a bit in the past 2-3 years. The whole "sacrifice a goat and wait for the correct phase of the moon to move your game to a new computer" meme really doesn't hold up anymore in my recent experience.

A Steam key for a game bought on Matrix is generated automatically and shows up in your library. That doesn't exclude they can give you a Matrix key if you ask them for it in an email.
The discount on your anniversary coupon is based I believe on the number of games you have on their website. This could be a reason they don't hand out Matrix keys for games you bought on Steam, but it could also be this has nothing to do with it ..

I've never had an issue with getting steam keys for my matrix purchases either. Pretty painless, and a nice feature. I'd much prefer getting the games on Matrix first, and then getting a Steam key. I think it benefits them more (not really sure), and it gives me the opportunity to back up the installer.

Bohemia Interactive (ARMA) has been split from Bohemia Simulations (VBS) for almost 7 years. So I wouldn't use them as an example of 'balance'.
Information posted today about how to get Steam keys for existing owners......I was able to successfully register the game and all the modules. No steam key yet to get, which is understandable since likely not until release.
this was just posted on the Matrix forum. Here is how you'll be able to get your Steam access for CMSF2 if you've purchased the game through Battlefront:
Hi guys,
We're very pleased to be working with Battlefront and know many of you are eagerly anticipating the release of Combat Mission. We wanted to give you some details on how things will work and both teams will do their best to make this process as painless as possible for you all to get your games working on Steam.
· Steam keys will be available to anybody who purchased the game, no matter where they purchased. All users will get steam keys by creating an account with Matrix/Slitherine to redeem a steam key. The reason for this is Matrix already have a process to distribute the keys and Battlefront didn't and it would have been a lot of work for them to create such as system so it felt simpler to use a system that already works. Sorry for the inconvenience of anyone who needs to create an account because of this.
· Once you have an account you can redeem Steam keys in the normal way by following these instructions - https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=93585
· Note that if you bought a bundle from Battlefront you will only have one serial for all the games in the bundle. To redeem all the pieces of your bundle as Steam keys you will need to register that serial for each part of the bundle. E.g. if you purchased the base game and British Forces bundle you would register that serial twice, once to the base game and once to the DLC. Each will generate a unique Steam key for that piece of content on Steam and must be redeemed on Steam separately.
· When purchasing a bundle on Matrix/Slitherine you will receive a serial for each part separately.
· The versions on Matrix, Battlefront and Steam are identical apart from some minor changes to make the game compatible with Steam. Steam requires all the game content to be in the install folder so the placement of some files will be different to the Battlefront version but this is all behind the scenes and the features are identical. Multiplayer is possible between versions.
· Customers who buy from Matrix/Slitherine will have access to the Matrix installer and a Steam key. Customers who buy from Battlefront will have access to the Battlefront version and Steam key. Matrix/Slitherine customers will not have access to the Battlefront version and vice versa.
· Any Steam key redemption issues should be reported to the Matrix forum, as Battlefront are not able to help with that.
· Other tech support should be requested at your point of purchase but both companies will try and help out anyone who has an issue if they can. Obviously any order issues can only be investigated by the site you purchased from as neither company has access to that kind of info for the other.
· If you have any questions or problems please let us know and we will do our best to help.
Sounds good with existing customers getting steam keys.
Good way to fix my install of CMSF2 which is probably dead from hardware changes again. Just move it to steam.
As a slight correction from something said earlier: not every Matrix/litherine game gets a Steam code. Only the games they co-release on Steam. Thus two-(and-a-half) related categories of exceptions:
1.) Games previously released on Matrix/Slitherine which they will never port to Steam for various reasons (for example the Hornet Leader adaptation).
2.) New games not released to Steam which may or may not ever get a Steam release, but which will then get a Steam code when-if-ever released there.
2.5.) Games previously not released to Steam which eventually got a Steam code -- of course they didn't have Steam codes until then, and of course if you own such a game but don't realize yet it has a Steam edition you won't have a Steam code for it yet.
CMSF2's Steam release has now been delayed till next week. Apparently it's still stuck in the approval queue so they don't want to risk it not showing up on time.
Very odd that Matrix choose not to publicly acknowledge the delay on any of the platforms such as Steam, their forum, or main store site. Unless I am just missing it somewhere, besides these third party sites like Wargamer saying it......not saying it isn't true, just seems like better communications could have been done by the company.

FWIW it's up on the Steam page now. Might have been dragging their feet a bit. When we put our story up though I'd received the email literally about ten minutes before, so if the first thing they decided to do was to tell some press partners there wasn't much time to do anything before I went live with my story.

Well, Matrix is a typical wargame shop. Their small developers are messy and on the other hand the customers are used to it. Just go with the flow :)

I agree...but with one exception. From time to time I go there to ask a UI question about a game, like how do I do this or get that to happen, and I often get a fast, helpful reply.

Yes, the Upgrade from Shock Force 1 to Shock Force 2 is only available from Battlefront. All license keys (both previously issued and future purchases) are in their system to get Steam keys.

If you own "CMSF1 Big Bundle Upgrade CMSF1-UPB2" then you own CMSF2. Use the Upgrade's key to get the Steam keys (if that's what you wanted to do).

Thank you, now I remember, CMSF 4.0 == CMSF2.
I did the keys dance and it went flawlessly from BFC to Matrix and from there to Steam keys. Thank you.
ETA: as a nice extra I discovered I can also get a steam key for my TOAW4.

The Help Desk has had a lot of action this today. Almost everything is that people aren't aware of these instructions for getting their Steam keys.
To be fair, the instructions you shared are not super clear for people who bought the game through BF. The 3rd bullet mostly relies on people being tech-savvy enough to decipher and figure out the appropriate serial key to use, especially if you own multiple keys from owning the game pre-4.0. I thought Matrix/Slitherine hired a tech writer some time back to help with this kind of thing, but I guess their focus is on the manuals and not customer communications with instructions.

How does the discount from owning shock force 1 work ? Do I buy it from bfc to get the discount, then get a steam key ? Or can I buy it from steam and also get the shock force 1 discount ?
Yes, the Upgrade from Shock Force 1 to Shock Force 2 is only available from Battlefront. All license keys (both previously issued and future purchases) are in their system to get Steam keys.
The Help Desk has had a lot of action this today. Almost everything is that people aren't aware of these instructions for getting their Steam keys. If the Admins here don't mind I'm re-posting the instructions here:
QuoteHi guys,
We're very pleased to be working with Battlefront and know many of you are eagerly anticipating the release of Combat Mission.
If anyone runs into any trouble with using their Battlefront key to get a Steam key please don't be shy about opening a Help Desk ticket.
I need to say this again:
This link from your post:

Points to:

which gives error 500 or 404 depending on time of day.
That's not gonna help the help desk :-)
The correct, direct link to enter your BFS serial into Matrix' system is:

Somebody needs to edit that post on matrix' forum.

Thank you! I'm going to change it on our forum. (what is currently up is what was sent to me to post). Using your link I found that I had to be logged in for it to work. Although the people that I know that have trouble with the link in the current post are you and I. I got the 404 message like you did but no one else here or on the Battlefront forum have mentioned it. HHHmmmmm............Better reach out to Slitherine before I change anything. :-)
I almost posted a reply to a review yesterday because I took personal exception to it. :) After rethinking it I didn't. He said no Battlefront employee had posted on the Battlefront forums for months. :)
Lets be a little fair to him. There was a pretty dark period where no one posted updates or roadmaps, or really anything outside basic tech support. It was a pretty long period of time. If he happned to visit there a year or so ago, he might have only seen that really long thread complaining about it.
The other thing to be fair about is that BFC never announces personnel changes or changing roles. That's OK for internal roles, but customer roles should be spelled out. IIRC, it eventually was announced, but a while after you were already doing the role.
BFC regulars never think about how the forum is perceived by people who might only pop in every few months just to see whats going on. BFC rarely communicates outside the forum, so you have to know where to look. And without the regular visit, there are a lot of people who might not catch the change from player to beta tester to employee.

I'm rolling up on 2 years full time. I was mostly joking when I posted what I said but there isn't a reason "to be fair". He posted the review yesterday and made a point of saying that in his review. If he'd said "I stopped going to the forums long ago because I felt that employees rarely post there", then I feel like I'd need to be fair. It's actually the reviewer who was unfair by saying something that is demonstrably not true, wouldn't you agree?
IIRC, it eventually was announced, but a while after you were already doing the role.
Maybe they wanted to make sure I was a keeper before saying anything. It's be awkward if they announced me and blew me out a month later. :-)
As far as his opinions about the game itself I have absolutely no problem with what he said. His subjective thoughts are just as valid as mine or yours.
As I said, before you showed up as full time employee. His statement is very true. There was almost an entire year of no one from BFC posting. So that part is fair from his perspective. BFC didn't suddenly start operating when you became an employee.
So you don't remember anything about that long thread with even beta testers complaining about the absence of updates and communications from BFC?

Hells yeah. Exactly what I was looking at. I wonder how much I am looking at because I own all the CMSF1 bundles.

There is a bundle upgrade for base game and all modules. I think it is $35.

So you don't remember anything about that long thread with even beta testers complaining about the absence of updates and communications from BFC?
No. I didn't spend much time on the public boards for years and years before I became one of the moderators. I'd poke my head in from time to time but didn't spend nearly the time that I did "back in the day", where I pretty much read every thread. The development forums and off site forums I read a lot. But the public Battlefront forum had become too big. There are only so many hours in the day for goofing off. :-) Once it became part of my job it wasn't goofing off anymore.
And that is going back to my point. You obviously weren't there and its very fair of that reviewer to state that. I think BFC lost a lot of "fringe" fans during the period. Everything was late, no comms, and beta testers also complaining. Its a paradise there compared to now.
Base game sale (-30%) https://www.matrixgames.com/game/combat-mission-shock-force-2
(only Matrix website)
I picked it up on Steam then immediately refunded it, and realized why I stopped playing the CM-series.
The game performance is awful - low FPS, even on a decent gaming rig.
The game UI is so clunky - just looking around and moving is clunky and weird.
Graphically, the game looks like shit - animations aren't synchronized, shadows flash in and out, and things are very pixelated (even on high resolution)
What makes this Shock Force 2.0?
More lipstick on the pig?

It plays great on my rig I had built in 2015. I even have old laptops it runs fine on. Once, a built in intel graphics card (laptop) gave me problems when I forgot to make the game run off the Nvidia card. That was easy to solve. I don't understand all the tech stuff. At the Batttlefront forums tech knowledgeable players have many helpful posts.
CMSF is one of my favorite CM titles because it has so many scenarios made for it over the years. The title is set in Syria but there are many free user made scenarios for Afghanistan, Iraq, Africa, etc. There is even one for the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.
IMO one of the most noticeable improvements in CMSF2 is amphibious vehicles. Below are screenshots of USMC forcing entry on a contested beach.

What kind of CPU do you have on this "decent gaming rig"? The game isn't graphically intensive, but it's fairly CPU intensive. It runs flawlessly on my laptop with a high-power CPU and integrated graphics.
