Is there any benefit to a pre-order?  Discounted price, early access, etc.?

It seems like you might be able to download a version of the game that let's you see things without playing, but haven't figured out exactly what it is.  I have a link to a download, but can't do it until my Madden 13 completes downloading:)  I believe you also get bonus scenario.  And when the full game is released you get 3 days earlier.

The entire world must be trying to pre-order because I can't even get onto the site right now.

Twenty bucks.  They make it easy to purchase with pricing like that, too!   8)

VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THIS...

It means that you'll be able to launch all the scenarios and look at the map and units, the moment you have finished downloading and installing the game. BUT you won't be able to run a turn before September 19th (i.e 3 days before the official release date).

I'm pretty stoked about this game.  I've been waiting for an ancients operational TBS for a long time.

I guess better than a typical pre-order when you get nothing....at least get to see something:)

I am excited for this too. But I still haven't cracked open an AGEOD game after all these years. Wondering if this should not be my entry point.

I yam what I yam. I have 3 or 4 AGEOD games in my possession, just haven't got around to cracking them open. But I do love me some ancient Roman history so I am intrigued with this one.

Ageod games can take awhile to learn and get into game system.  Worth the time investment IMO because they are such good historic operational games.  There are not many games out there that fall into this genre niche.

I look at the AGEOD engine similarly to the EU3/CK2, etc. engine.  I know these are great games but require a significant investment of time to learn.

But once you learn, there are a ton of games that suddenly become accessible and you know you're going to have some fun.

I'm glad I invested the time to learn CK2 and at some point I will really sit down and figure out AGEOD.  I've tried a few times, but they really aren't easy!

Anyway, this game sounds like fun and for $20 it IS pretty hard to say no.

I find that the ageod games are much easier to get into than the paradox grand strategy titles. However, they have very deep organizational systems that do take longer to master. For me, ease of initial accessability is the most critical factor to sticking with a game.

I'll probably wait and see what your guys' reactions to the game is, but I'm definitely interested.  For me, the biggest factors are generally as follows:

1.)  Immersion/atmosphere
2.)  AI
3.)  Accessibility/learning curve

If a game does well in at least 2 out of those 3 areas, I'm usually going to want it.

Same here.  I'm utterly fascinated by wargames, and I own several, but grand strategy games have long been my bread & butter.

Toonces, if you are looking for an introduction to the AGEOD games, Wars in America is a good bet. I'm not a fan of the 2 week turns and it lacks a lot of the things other AGEOD games do, but the lack of Corp and division creation and recruitment means that its easier to get into.

Rise of Prussia is good too but there you are dealing with complex organization and leader qualities as well as recruitment, recruit depos and such. I would bet that the Rome game will be closest to rise of Prussia

I love the atmosphere of Ageod games.  Best maps in any wargame IMO.  Cool army counters.  Great period music.  The WEGO system really adds a special depth to the game.

As far as turn-based wargames go, the AGEOD ones have excellent 'atmosphere' since the whole interface is period artwork, not to mention all the art done for each counter's uniform or the actual general displayed on them, the map art, etc.

I'd say they're probably the best for atmosphere because of all that great artwork.  For me, it can also be immersive in a tabletop sense since you give orders by picking up the army pieces and dropping them where you want them to go.  That's pretty cool too, although people are so used to a Select+Click method that they tend to think the whole order system more complicated than it really is - it's actually easier than what they're used to in that sense (you just drag & drop them where you want 'em).

The big difficulties come when you're learning how to organize your chain of command as efficiently as possible for your intended purposes.  Add to that having to figure out how to best guess the Fog Of War info you get, fingering out the detailed supply line rules, and dealing with replacements/recruitment.  It's quite a learning curve, but once you've figured out how to create & break down your armies with the interface buttons & drag-drop, while using your Command Points effectively, then the rest is cheese.

I actually have both those games.  I've admittedly done little more than tinker around with them, but I can say both have a solid sense of atmosphere.  Revolution Under Siege does an especially good job in this respect (love the music!), but neither is a slouch in that department.

AJE is as sure of a bet as you can get. The AGEOD "Athena" engine is highly developed and works great when its not asked to do too much. There will be a few things here and there but will generally be solid from the start.

As for atmosphere, as stated, you can't get more. Period maps, music and artwork.

Great answers. The price point is strong too. I want it! I'll need to mentally prepare for the organizational learning curve, I think.

I know the other AGE engine games allow PBEM. RoP, AACW and WIA do....if it doesn't, I'm sure it will soon. Same engine.

I think it does up to 3 players I thought I'd read somewhere.  It uses the WIA command and supply system so the army organization learning curve will be lessened a bit, but other than the mountain areas I have to believe winter will not be as limiting to campaigning.

I've D/Led the (pre)game and checked the options but I don't see any MP option from main menu or at scenario selection. How do you choose MP in other AGEOD games? All I have on my 'puter right now is the first BOA and I don't see MP there either.

EDIT: Are these games PBEM? There is a turn save option in the game.
Title: Re: Ageod - Alea Jacta Es - Now available for preorder
Post by: Bison on August 26, 2012, 07:49:47 PM
PBEM in Ageod games is a honestly a pain in the ass the first few times you do it.  You actually start the game pick your side and then send the save game file to your opponent who loads up the game picking otherside and off you go.  A bit simplified but that is the jest of it.  Honestly Ageod needs to make their games a little more friendly on the MP side of the house.

When you buy from AGEOD can you download forever like Gamers Gate? Even though I backup my games, I still like that ability to re-download from Gamers Gate or Steam.. Searched to see if GG had a pre-order page, but don't see that game yet..

No questions asked...I'm getting this when it comes out.  2nd game today that someone at Grogheads made me want to keep my radar on.  This particular title looks like it just might be the spark that gets my strategy game mojo back on.

Doesn't look like it has PBEM capabilities though unless I'm missing something.

I'm pretty sure the $20 will be the going price.  It seems to be a sweet spot as far as price points go.  Dunno if Paradox still dictated that price or not, but that may be the case and they do like that number, too.

Considering that they'll be making regular DLC for it, it also fits the marketing mold there.  AGEOD guys have stated there are plans to release a number of DLC scenario & campaign packs and that they didn't want to look like they were "gouging" their customers with a big cost up front, and a steady stream of expansions.  I love these guys.  :-*

Sounds good MetalDog.  Good to hear you've got yourself a nice routine.  Your girlfriend must really understand how important games are to us men.   :)

Let's set something up soon then.  Speaking of routines now that the kids are back in school I should have a little more extra time during the week day evenings for another PBEM game or two.

Somewhere in the chatter on the AGEOD forums I noticed that they claim to have new tools for checking data structures and impacts in scenarios -- RUS apparently had major scenario-specific problems.  Which may be why they needed these tools.

I'm pretty sure their installers have all been multi-lingual ones in a single package.  I'd be more concerned about them attempting to charge you through a French bank or something, and your bank getting paranoid about an overseas charge, and some extra change spent on exchange rate.

However, if you let them know on the AGEOD boards someone would probably lend info & help.

I've done foreign transactions before without any hassle, so no problem there. If the installer is multilingual the only issue left is understanding the emails.

I tried to cancel the order last night but was doing a few other things at the same time and didn't get that far. I'm thinking that is the simplest thing go do.

My original order page was partially in French as well. I didn't click the leetle flag until after the confirmation page. I just checked the installer again for you, Gus. The installer defaulted to English but even if it defaulted to French you can choose English instead. There are only two options.

Cool, thank you 'Wing. I just wrote to them explaining what I did. With your info above that leaves just the emails. I asked if they could resend to me in English.

Also keep in mind that Hegemony Rome will probably be out for Pre-Order (and beta access) around that time, too.

It's Rome season!

Hegemony: Rome is on my list too. Has there been a release date given?

No but I saw mention of their Beta possibly going into Pre-Order next month, and pre-orders getting beta copies of course.

Just checked it out myself. I was very psyched for this game and then it kind of went into remission. Now it's back again.

Over the years I have grown to really enjoy Roman history too. And Hegemony Gold taught me a lot on ancient Greece.

The new Hegemony game looks extremely ambitious. And I am psyched to finally have my AGEOD entry point. Where's my gladius?

Definitely looking forward to the new Hegemony game and the extra gameplay features in it.  More room to maneuver your armies too, it says!  Yay!

As for the AGEOD game, I suppose that even those of us who understand how the military organization works will have to adjust to the Roman OOB a bit so there will be some new learning for all.

Gus, can you give me a rundown on Hegemony Gold...something about that game has held me back from buying, but maybe I should give it a try.  I have even tried the demo, just not sure if I "get it" but maybe I haven't given it enough time.

^I wasn't sure if I would like it either but the simplicity of the interface and the solid AI (in later parts of the game) engaged me. It was easy to tell it was not a top title produced with lost of money, but the passion the developers put in to the subject of ancient Greece was enough to hook me. It took me about 5 hours with it to start to 'get it' like you say, Grim.

I want to pre-order, but then, I love having my shelf on GamersGate... Do you get an extra scenario with the pre-order or something like that?

Plus the game 3 days earlier, plus you can actually install the game now and explore, although you can't play it out.

You guys are making this harder and harder to resist buying.

If I did pre-order, not saying that I will :) , do you need a client to download it through or can you just download the file and install it?

Just download and install if you buy directly from Ageod.

Yeppers!

AGEOD has pretty much the same type of serial code system that Matrix uses.

Hegemony is also the same, and those fine people at Longbow Games are vocal about their dislike of DRM.  :)

So fear not digital freedom fighters!  Rome doesn't need an internet connection to be built in a day!

The forums?  It was a big issue when they redid the software a couple months back.  I had to create a new account.  If it's your store account, you should just be able to email the Phils and get all fixed.

Pre-ordered  :D

Maybe I'll get to play this one. And I agree with someone on the front page of this thread - they make it easy to buy a game!

I have a stupid question. In my defense the only AGEOD games I've played are Rise of Prussia and PRoN. Is there any sort of empire management, aka managing taxes, city building, etc in AJE? Given that its an AGEOD game I'm hoping its more about managing my armies then it is managing the whole Roman empire.

No idea sorry. I read very little about it. Being AGEoD and about Rome with a Sparticus scenario - I was sold.

There is some along with event triggers and choices from my understanding.   However it is about operational warfare similar to RoP.

It seems to be mostly military based as the other AGE games were.

You can collect taxes and build and train units but I do not believe much more than that.

It reminds me of the boardgame " Imperium Romanum II".

They are planning a lot of DLCs if it takes off. The first one is from 318 to 236 BC. There has also been some posts about it being very moddable and people are already talking about doing a mod for this period or group of years etc..

The  great thing is that for many of you, this will be your first AGEOD game....because your desperate....and you HAVE to have the only operational Roman warfare game. once you learn it, it will open up all of the other AGEOD games that you were so scared of.
