Title: WDS/Tiller Winter Sale Starts Today
Post by: Rayfer on December 16, 2022, 10:12:05 AM
Just curious, anyone have a must buy game you're considering?  I have yet to try one of their naval games....will have to look them over and decide.

Anyone pick up anything yet?  Still on the fence as I have so many unplayed WDS games, but I just feel like I have to purchase something:)

Kind of torn between Napoleon, Modern Air Power, and Squad Battles.  I would love some of the other WWII/Modern campaign such games, but they feel way too large for me

I splurged and got SB Spanish Civil War, completing my collection of that series and I also picked up Salerno 41, Sealion 40 and Kiev 43.  I would have picked up Salerno long ago had I known it included Crete.

Thanks...so many choices, not sure what I will end up doing.....probably should just play what I have before buying new, but that is no fun:)

Just an FYI - a major overhaul of the SB series is underway - with fixes, enhancements, etc. You should start seeing those in the not to distant future, beginning with Advance of the Reich and Red Victory. Eventually all the titles will see the updates.

Plan on getting War Over Vietnam to complete my Modern Air Power series.  Really wish they would make more games in that series.

We have more planned, just a matter of managing programming resources... eventually you'll see another.

They are good games and I'm glad they are in my library, but I think they have been superceded by games like CMO, which have very robust, detailed and complex aviation elements in terms of databases for aircraft and weaponry, mission planning, logistics combat, etc.

If you wanted something more narrow in scope, complexity and reach, they might be a good option.

I tried the demo for Modern Air Power, but just couldn't get into it after CMO.   I just wish I could get Fleet Command working right  :(

Going to try to put together a bulk discount order, think I can find enough titles I have an interest in. I have 1 game each in the early American Wars, WW1, and Civil War series, so probably won't purchase any in those series until I put in some play time and see if I take to the series. I have all the Panzer Battles titles, my favorite scale and series. Thought Moscow would be out by now but guess there busy updating there asses off :bd:. No more modern war as I have 3 of those series, not interested in Korea at the PZC scale and will probably pick up Fulda sooner or later. Probably fill out my SB series, thinking Korea, Dien Bien Phu, Tour of Duty, Winter War, and mix/match with some PZC titles like something in 1943, Moscow 41, and like Jarhead Salerno with make my list.

That's exactly why I like them.  ;)  Sometimes I just don't feel like dealing with the complexity of CMO.  I think the MAP series is much more accessible and suited to a quick session.  Either way, I'm glad to see that their will eventually be more.

Thanks Budd and to all that are supporting us through the sale and for the last year that WDS has been up and running.

Firstly, we are still slogging away at Panzer Battles Moscow. There has been a lot of scope creep with this title and it may ultimately become two games. We are currently expanding the map to allow us to cover a lot of really interesting engagements in January/February 1942. I was the 'driving' force behind all the Panzer Battles titles and my involvement in all the updates to the Panzer Campaigns series and others has pulled me away. The good news is that we have additional scenario designers starting to pick up the slack and that will help us get back on track. We have other Panzer Battles titles planned and in some case maps already created. You can read more on Panzer Battles Moscow here in our Quarter Two update: https://wargameds.com/blogs/news/2022-quarter-two-update (https://wargameds.com/blogs/news/2022-quarter-two-update)

As far as the Squad Battles series, that is my other big focus. As Rich touched on earlier in the thread we are going to essentially 'remaster' the series. A lot of the coding is done and we now are redoing artwork and a lot of the orders of battles and in some cases scenarios so we can use all the cool new features and artwork being added.

Following are a couple of example screenshots from different periods of development (see the toolbar changes?). Most are using the new zoom level so you can get down and dirty with the men. Vehicles and guns now have in-game facing representation and we have ditched the top-down figures for men and back to portrait. All graphics are work in progress and the last couple with snow don't have all features enabled yet. Expect snowy trees, houses, roads etc something we have now implemented in Panzer Battles Moscow. The last screen shot is a comparison of what we published in the 4.00 release so you can compare to what will be in the 4.01 upgrade.

All these screenshots are at 1920 x 1080.

Thank you! :notworthy:

Thanks for preview, looks awesome. The new zoom and facing will be great. I already love the new tool bar and appreciate that it will be familiar between series. I didn't like the top down infantry, but not sure how I feel about all portraits for all infantry types. All HQ's cool but I kind of like a side on view like below for infantry. But of course its all subjective. Appreciate all your guys work, especially all the effort you put into the documentation and extras, its appreciated and effort like that should be supported. Happy Holidays

This is good news...I know you cant say specific time frames, but any general ideas for the other titles?  ATR and RV aren't necessarily at the top of my list of games I would purchase from the series so just wondering if we are weeks or months away from the rest. Or is it far enough away best to wait and pick up sb titles during summer 2023 sale:) Appreciate the continued work!

Weeks for the first two I mention...I would expect some months on the others, just being realistic. The hard thing about the Squad Battles series is it has so many unique titles in it... graphics that work with Winter War don't with Dien Bien Phu, or Spanish Civil War for example. Lots and lots of work...

And no pressure  8) - but these will be free updates to existing owners, so wait, or not, you'll get them for all purchased titles when ready.  O0

Thanks for the quick update.  You did this for me in the past with civil war titles, could you list the games in order of release date?  No doubt I will pick some up at some point but just weighing options of playing other games until these new versions come up.  You'll definitely get some of my money :). Also could you recommend maybe the top five or so that would be best for a solo player?

Order of release:

Vietnam
Tour of Duty
The Proud and the Few
Eagles Strike
The Korean War
Advance of the Reich
Pacific War
Soviet-Afghan War
Winter War
Spanish Civil War
Dien Bien Phu
Red Victory
Modern War
Falklands
First World War
Grenada

My top five picks:

Tour of Duty
Eagles Strike
Winter War
Dien Bien Phu
Red Victory

This series is probably the best for Solo play.

After much contemplation here's what I think I will go with. Now to wait and see if I receive a gift card for the holidays, if not I'll pull the trigger by sales end. I reserve the right to switch titles out of course but I went back and forth a bunch already. The Proud and the Few, and Soviet-Afghan War are on the bubble, the rest are solid.

Well, I am the one who reminded everyone else the sale was ending but I ended up forgetting myself and remembered after the sale was already done...had my eye on a few different things but I guess will likely wait until the summer as I have other WDS games unplayed.  Just curious what (3) did you pick up?  I was having a hard time choosing between some squad battles, modern air, and Napoleonic titles.

Not looking to pickup 5 titles at once as I would have to explain to the wife:)  In this case, there was 2-3 I was considering.  No big deal...it's nice you guys have sales, much appreciated.  Just something for me to look forward to in June/July, unless you start to have other holiday sales:)

I really like the Strategic War titles, they are not beer & pretzel, but are easy to get into and have some really interesting scenarios such as the Balkans in 1941.

We just need to build some more titles using the engine!

^yes. I think the series is often overlooked and I've seen particularly the First Blitzkrieg receive a fair amount of criticism with many saying the covered battles are handled better elsewhere. However, there isn't a lot of detailed Impression information on the titles out there and what I've seen looks impressive, so I will just find out for myself.

When you get around to it, would be interested in your impressions.  Like you, I have seen in various places where people seemed to imply these titles were lacking in some way so I have stayed away from them.  They don't seemed to be talked about much to gain enough intel on them  Based on the title/scale, I assume there must be tons of counters which is another reason I have stayed away, just prefer the small and more manageable scales.  But maybe I am wrong about this.

At 10 kilometer hexes, 2 days per turn and division level units, the scale has kept me away too. But after years of waiting and the winter sale just ending, I figured now would be the perfect time to jump in.  :idiot2:

An unexpected holiday cash bonanza allowed me to fill my WDS cart up to the BulkOrders level. I bought enough of them to keep me busy for a long time.

Frankly I have a love / mild dislike relationship with WDS/JTS titles.

Love them for their detail, number of scenarios, and breathtaking scope of historical offerings. I also love the dedication of WDS to supporting their games. Even love them for releasing some very meaty "free" demos. Most of demos are great stand-alone games on their own.

On the neutral side, the AI is usually OK as a sparring partner. But in some scenarios, the AI does seem to be trying hard for the "Stupid AI Trick of the Year" award (in their defense, many scenarios note when they are not suitable for solo play against the AI). The games are great for PBEM however (except for the nearly medieval 20th century methods you have to use to trade files with your opponent).

On the negative side, I still wince a bit whenever I start to play a WDS game and I am confronted with an interface that has only seen cosmetic changes since the last century. I do have to admit however that the games are functional; the antiquated UI doesn't stop me from buying or playing the games...;)

^i'm right there with you. The games are far from perfect. What seals it for me though are the glorious OOBs and TOEs. The sheer weight, diversity and completeness of the units and equipment holds such historical interest for me and makes the games worth owning as a companion to my reading and research.

I have similar feelings about the WDS civil War titles.  I own all of them, but the AI is terrible.  However, I believe they are working on an update to improve the AI.  I assume it will cost something, as stuff like that is not free, but I would gladly pay a reasonable (say $10/title) to upgrade the AI.

As you point out, the advantage of the WDS/JTS games is the sheer number of battles covered.  And the system is relatively simple so that games vs. human players are easy to arrange and play.  And despite the relative simplicity of the games, they are sufficiently complex to satisfy the Grognard in me.  And despite the AI, I find them useful as a study aid when reading about a battle.  I can play a game against the AI, then pick up a book about the battle and the book makes much more sense to me.
