Well, it is Paradox.  There's a good chance they'll release a patch that converts the whole thing into Battle Beyond the Stars 2 years into the game update cycle.

I'll stick with the New Horizons mod for Stellaris.

Well i am very very happy. This will be the first official Star Trek Strategy game since Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. I just hope they don't use starlanes. Other than that, i am very excited!

From the last image on the video, i am pretty sure it's based on the Stellaris engine.

Damnit, I usually wait for Paradox games to be several years old so I can get the game and DLC at a reasonable price... I may have to forgo that practice and get the base game early this time.

The Steam page for Star Trek: Infinite (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1622900/Star_Trek_Infinite/) lists a single player game mode and online PvP.

The developer of Star Trek: Infinite is Nimble Giant Entertainment who previously developed the following games:
Bunch of Heroes (https://store.steampowered.com/app/111400/Bunch_of_Heroes/)
Champions of Regnum (https://store.steampowered.com/app/222520/Champions_of_Regnum/)
Quantum League (https://store.steampowered.com/app/651150/Quantum_League/)

Interestingly, Paradox also announced a new Stellaris short form turn based game called Stellaris Nexus (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1983990/Stellaris_Nexus/). It will feature single player mode, online PvP, and online Co-op. Its developer is Whatboy Games who previously developed Trials of Fire (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1038370/Trials_of_Fire/).

Back in 2019, Paradox announced Stellaris: Galaxy Command (https://www.paradoxinteractive.com/media/press-releases/press-release/paradox-announces-stellaris-galaxy-command-for-ios-and-android) for iOS (https://apps.apple.com/app/id1455954927) and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paradoxplaza.lassie&pli=1). I wonder if Star Trek: Infinite and Stellaris Nexus will share some of the same features of Stellaris: Galaxy Command?

First previews makes this look a bit too much like Stellaris for me.  I was never fond of that game.

Also a bit disappointed that they're making it look like you start in the Next Gen era.  I would've liked to see a tech progression from Enterprise through TNG and end game tech from Next Generation Season 8 Picard Season 3.

Hopefully just seeing some early snippets.

I'm going to wait and see what it's like on release.  I'm not going to spend on a paid mod for Stellaris.

I think it's a real shame when people shun new games because they are basically professionally done mods of a previous game. The reason I think this is because it encourages developers either to think professional versions of subject matter they may have been thinking of doing before they even released the original game not to bother OR it encourages game devs not to support modding to allow them freedom to release whatever content they want.

Personally I am no longer a fan of mods because I got sick of them breaking every time the base game got updated and I got sick of waiting for mods to be feature complete or being abandoned. You also get varying quality with mods and all the limitations modders have to "mod" usually due to lack of access to the game engine and dev tools.

The last point because I am more paranoid these days is the more distinct possibility for other programs to be hidden in mods created by random people. I think their was some sort of scandal recently in this regard that turned out to be nothing.

I'd much prefer a professional version and would pay for professional versions of mods. I have done so in the past with games like red orchestra 2 which was the result in fact of some modders winning a modding contest and then getting funded to develop RO2 iirc.

With regard to the next gen era. I am thanking my lucky stars as the 1987-2005 tv series is the sweet spot for me when it comes to star trek. I don't mind the original series and the new alternate timeline movies are OK if not really star trek, but the post 2005 tv series just lost me.
Title: Re: Star Trek grand strategy game
Post by: SirAndrewD on June 17, 2023, 06:33:05 PM
I wouldn't shun it because it's purely a professionally done mod.

I am dubious about it because it looks like the mods for Stellaris might be more what I would want from Star Trek Stellaris than this seems to be on first and way too early look.

Why would I buy a professionally done Star Trek Stellaris game, if I actually prefer the mods for a game I've already bought?

I'm not going to if that's what it is.

I may admittedly be in a minority, but I didn't really care a ton for Stellaris and was hoping that this being by different developers would take a fresh take.

Hence, I'll take a wait and see.

And feeling a bit dubious about the game heavily oriented towards the TNG era has nothing to do with what era of Star Trek I like best, I simply would like a game set in the Star Trek timeline to have changing tech in different eras.  Starting with the ships from Enterprise and progressing to the Enterprise D, to me, would me more satisfying than beginning in the early days of the Star Trek timeline with Next Gen ships making first contact.

You know, like the Star Trek mods for Stellaris.

I don't think you are in the minority. I think I am.
Most people I know will take the path of least resistance and go for the free option every time.
In your case it's about gameplay and what will give you the most satisfaction.

I understand both views and respect them.

I would suggest that if it is popular their may be addons for the other star trek series... however given how convuluted the rights for star trek are at the moment it's hard to tell.

What I see happening here though is that the modding community will butt heads with the professional one and perhaps sink this project. Perhaps the mod factor has already contibuted by giving this game a low risk approach with a small budget?

THe path of least resistance would be no resistance. Which is just as futile as most resistance.. or is the path of least resistance the tiniest possible measurable amount of resistance. Which now has me thinking about electrical theory lol.

A very good question, especially given Star Trek's well known technology differences when it comes to warping.

There are no starlanes in the screenshots available so i would think that travel to other stars is through warp. I am more worried about the possible absence of cloaking. Hope the tech is there.

Considering that Star Trek nerds have to be the #1 target marketing group for this game, I would think that anything like star lanes would be completely out of the question. It would be a monumentally stupid move.

Warhammer 40K The Horus Heresy > Star Wars > Star Trek > Battlestar Galactica (1970s version)

and yet I love all of them with great passion.

That being said I have accepted the fact that there never will be a Birth of the Federation 2 that will have a TBS strategic layer and an RTS tactical layer.

I also reject evil cash grabs when I see them.

Take this with a grain of salt though, I read at least one article that said that this game will add a tactical battle layer onto Stellaris.  Not sure how that'll work.

Is the California class and USS Cerritos mentioned in the pre-order pack the new star trek (beyond ST Voyager to me)? Because if new star trek is confirmed I am less inclined. Partially because I don't want spoilers in case I ever suffer through watching new star trek and also because I am just not interested in the newer trek series.

It's kind of a pattern. With star trek the older kirk series are hard to watch but you can do it, the 90s trek like next gen, deep space, voyager, enterprise are a little dated but generally watchable and the newer stuff without including the alternate universe paramount movies are pretty much unenjoyable and unwatchable.
This pattern continues with star wars. Prequels are watchable but not great, middle movies (the originals) are still very good and the new sequel star wars movies are utterly stupid and unintelligible garbage to me.

BTW What happened to indiana jones on streaming services? Did they forget to clean them up. They look horrible. I certainly remember those differently, they used to look beautiful on a tiny tube TV lol.

Also they still have not shown any combat.. which is how I had hoped this game would be different from stellaris. Potentially making it a sins2 killer. because it would have 4x maxed out with more than stellaris's token (1+1=win stats pre-school combat) real time space combat system. I strongly suspect at this stage that unless I have missed something that this game really is just a paid star trek mod for stellaris.

Lower Decks goes extremely out of its way to not be "New" Trek all the way to complete visual continuity with TOS and TNG.

Lower decks is a comedy though right, similar to the orville? I don't think Star Trek is suited to comedy.. although I did like galaxy quest as a one off. I could not watch a whole TV series of silliness. I want to feel the wonder of space travel and exploration rather than watching people goof off and play dumb.

It's a comedy but it is not a parody nor is it absurd.  It's in many ways a very heart felt homage to the general spirit and ideals of Star Trek.  It does occasionally get serious.

I'd just describe Lower Decks as a total distillation of the heart and love for the ideals of Star Trek and what the lore and the show is about.   The characters are in no ways dumb or foolish.  They are the second line and get the crap work (For example in one episode they have to clean up the fact that Landru took back over his planet because no one bothered to check up)  but even with the grunt work of the "2nd Line of Starfleet" they do it with pride and become the legends of the "Lower Decks".

See in star trek lore even lower decks I would expect would be like the bridge of a main line federation vessel. Well run and serious without the moral problems and menial tasks that we associate today with menial labour. In other words when you say lower decks I am imagining shaggy and the scooby doo crew kinda shenanigans. I might try it though as you're not the first to recommend it. I just can't abide comedy for the sake of comedy in what should be a serious show. It's gotta be that utopian future.

I'd suggest you just try it.

Star Trek right now is NOT Discovery and Picard Season 1 and 2.

Lower Decks is light hearted, it has comedic elements, but they reflect some of the best comedic traditions of every series of Star Trek in the past.  It's less slapstick, more Trouble With Tribbles, Piece of the Action, I Mudd, Fistfull of Datas, Take Me Out to the Holosuite...

You know what Star Trek has been doing its entire run.  It has enormous heart and really touches strongly on the utopian ideal.

Star Trek has majorly course corrected after the unmitigated disaster of Discovery and Picard S 1 and 2.  Since then Lower Decks, Picard S3 and Strange New Worlds have been a major fix for the absolute crap show that came between the end of Voyager and those.

And listen, I've got the cred.  I as a kid in Orlando was in a self made Starfleet Monster Maroon that I stitched and glued together and I went to a convention in that thing and met James Doohan.   I'm old school.  I've turned off my share of Star Trek shows like Enterprise and Discovery.  I'll call em out when they're bad but I will endorse them when they're good.

Lower Decks, Season 3 of Picard and Strange New Worlds are good. They're Star Trek.

I'm being left extremely cold by the commentary and early reviews.

This seems to be one to let simmer on the stovetop for a while.

I know Star Trek really isn't about ship combat but I'm most disappointed that they apparently didn't throw anything in there to spice that up, even if it was just to break up the spread sheet monotony.

I'm on the fence with this.  While I'm a Star Trek fan, simply redoing Stellaris with Star Trek names and graphics isn't going to work for me.  I may wait for a significant sale, but possibly not even then.
Title: Re: Star Trek grand strategy game

A buggy bare boned Stellaris Lite seems to be a consensus.  Even the positive reviews say that.

Just watching reviews while at work it looks like there's only a limited amount to do for each faction, and the aggressive factions are ruined by Stellaris' weak combat system.

Positives seem to be that it has at least a cool Star Trek feel and it's set in a pre set up galaxy with the state of the Alpha and Beta quadrants as they are 20 years prior to TNG.

This one seems like something I should love but the rest of that turns me off.  I guess it helps that I was never fond of Stellaris anyway.

Unless I hear something radically different I'm crossing this one off until it's even more budget than it currently is.

Frankly it's a new low for Paradox in my view.  Not only do they give you a minimal game to start with, and at full price, but then require 100's or 1000's of dollars of additional purchases to make it complete.  Now it looks like they sold their UI and Game mechanics to a developer simply to have then reskin and redesign some components - and just like above will expect you to spends 100's or 1000's of more dollars to make it complete and give it any flavor.  They would have been better off selling it as a DLC / overhaul under the Stellaris name rather than try to sell it as a new game.  A new low for Paradox

Totally agree with you there.  That type of marketing is what convinced me about a year ago to stop buying Paradox products.  Same thing with the Total War franchise although not as bad as Paradox.

I'm tempted by this, but a lot of the buzz seems to say it's a reskinned Stellaris. I've never played Stellaris, so that's not necessarily an issue for me, but I do wonder how much they'll flesh the systems out to make it something more unique?

There's apparently a very good Star Trek mod for Stellaris, so that might be a better investment.

So from what I've gathered by reading various reviews and looking through some comments is that the new Star Trek game has a more authentic star trek feel whereas the Stellaris New Horizons mod/star trek has a lot more to offer currently.  Since the new game is solely focus on Star Trek it will probably be better in a year or two after multiple DLC's and updates.   The options really are you could pay $40 for the new game and enjoy the shell that is currently there or you could buy Stellaris and maybe some DLC but you could easily spend 100+ dollars upwards of $400.00 :(

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but if you just bought the base game Stellaris you don't need any DLC to run the New Horizons mod.  You can get a steam key from various places like cd keys which currently has them for $9.00 bucks and I've never had issues with that site or a few others.   It's easy to find the game under $15 during sales on various sites.

Alternatively you can buy them both on steam and refund whichever you don't like within 2 hours - although I think Stellaris takes more than 2 to get a feel.

I personally have tried to get in to Stellaris but it has not clicked for me yet, that being the case I know the same would happen with the new star trek game since it is so similar UI and all.  If you really like Star Trek might I suggest starting with Stellaris and getting the new horizons mod - let the new Star Trek game bake a year or two so you can fully enjoy it once it's more complete and debugged.  Like every Paradox published game it will be a completely different game in a year with tons of DLC to add.

I can't speak for the new Star Trek game but I do have Stellaris.  I don't like Stellaris, there's a lot to that and I won't go into it here.  I have played the New Horizons Star Trek Mod for Stellaris and it's an improvement but it's still not great.

If you have neither and want a Star Trek game I might suggest you get the new game.  It's Stellaris 3.0, a much older build than the current game.  From what I know it also simulates warp drive much better than Stellaris ever could and it has a fully formed galaxy set up 20 years prior to TNG so it's much more lore friendly having four of the main Star Trek powers established with history and known.

Stellaris' new Horizons mod starts you in one system in the 22nd century and tells you to go with no characters or lore friendly direction.

Both have awful combat.  New Horizons tries to fix this a bit with smaller fleets and tries to force Stellaris' awful system to give you some choice, but it fails.  Infinite is pure Stellaris "The higher number wins" doomstack spread sheet war.  Neither accomplish the hoped for Wrath of Khan/DS9 joy of commanding a battlefleet.

Right now I don't know if either are worth it.  As I say I've played New Horizons and felt left wanting.  Infinite sounds like a streamlined TNG focused version of it.  Maybe I need to take a hit and play Infinite just to give an informed opinion cause, well, anyone that knows me here knows I'm a game whore and gear whore and no one can accuse me of hurting for cash.  I just don't really wanna do it.

That seems to be Paradox's way. Release the base shell of a game and then fleece you for content over the next decade  :tickedoff:

I believe you're correct in that the mod only requires the base Stellaris and finding discounted keys for it seems easy enough.

Quote from: SirAndrewD on October 14, 2023, 11:48:52 PMIf you have neither and want a Star Trek game I might suggest you get the new game.

This is what's pushing me towards Infinite. It seems the flavor and "feel" will be more Star Trek. I have seen it mentioned that Infinite removed the hyperspace lanes that Stellaris relied on, and that seems to be a near-unanimously liked feature amongst reviews and comments I've seen.

And in Groghead tradition, I will encourage you to spend that cash on the game haha. There, I've done my duty, no more, no less.
