Frankly it's a new low for Paradox in my view.  Not only do they give you a minimal game to start with, and at full price, but then require 100's or 1000's of dollars of additional purchases to make it complete.  Now it looks like they sold their UI and Game mechanics to a developer simply to have then reskin and redesign some components - and just like above will expect you to spends 100's or 1000's of more dollars to make it complete and give it any flavor.  They would have been better off selling it as a DLC / overhaul under the Stellaris name rather than try to sell it as a new game.  A new low for Paradox

Totally agree with you there.  That type of marketing is what convinced me about a year ago to stop buying Paradox products.  Same thing with the Total War franchise although not as bad as Paradox.

^Creative Assembly is definitely giving Paradox a run for their money, though.

In the wrong direction.

Ok that made me laugh out loud.  I get what you're saying there.

I'm tempted by this, but a lot of the buzz seems to say it's a reskinned Stellaris. I've never played Stellaris, so that's not necessarily an issue for me, but I do wonder how much they'll flesh the systems out to make it something more unique?

There's apparently a very good Star Trek mod for Stellaris, so that might be a better investment.

So from what I've gathered by reading various reviews and looking through some comments is that the new Star Trek game has a more authentic star trek feel whereas the Stellaris New Horizons mod/star trek has a lot more to offer currently.  Since the new game is solely focus on Star Trek it will probably be better in a year or two after multiple DLC's and updates.   The options really are you could pay $40 for the new game and enjoy the shell that is currently there or you could buy Stellaris and maybe some DLC but you could easily spend 100+ dollars upwards of $400.00 :(

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but if you just bought the base game Stellaris you don't need any DLC to run the New Horizons mod.  You can get a steam key from various places like cd keys which currently has them for $9.00 bucks and I've never had issues with that site or a few others.   It's easy to find the game under $15 during sales on various sites.

Alternatively you can buy them both on steam and refund whichever you don't like within 2 hours - although I think Stellaris takes more than 2 to get a feel.

I personally have tried to get in to Stellaris but it has not clicked for me yet, that being the case I know the same would happen with the new star trek game since it is so similar UI and all.  If you really like Star Trek might I suggest starting with Stellaris and getting the new horizons mod - let the new Star Trek game bake a year or two so you can fully enjoy it once it's more complete and debugged.  Like every Paradox published game it will be a completely different game in a year with tons of DLC to add.

I can't speak for the new Star Trek game but I do have Stellaris.  I don't like Stellaris, there's a lot to that and I won't go into it here.  I have played the New Horizons Star Trek Mod for Stellaris and it's an improvement but it's still not great.

If you have neither and want a Star Trek game I might suggest you get the new game.  It's Stellaris 3.0, a much older build than the current game.  From what I know it also simulates warp drive much better than Stellaris ever could and it has a fully formed galaxy set up 20 years prior to TNG so it's much more lore friendly having four of the main Star Trek powers established with history and known.

Stellaris' new Horizons mod starts you in one system in the 22nd century and tells you to go with no characters or lore friendly direction.

Both have awful combat.  New Horizons tries to fix this a bit with smaller fleets and tries to force Stellaris' awful system to give you some choice, but it fails.  Infinite is pure Stellaris "The higher number wins" doomstack spread sheet war.  Neither accomplish the hoped for Wrath of Khan/DS9 joy of commanding a battlefleet.

Right now I don't know if either are worth it.  As I say I've played New Horizons and felt left wanting.  Infinite sounds like a streamlined TNG focused version of it.  Maybe I need to take a hit and play Infinite just to give an informed opinion cause, well, anyone that knows me here knows I'm a game whore and gear whore and no one can accuse me of hurting for cash.  I just don't really wanna do it.

That seems to be Paradox's way. Release the base shell of a game and then fleece you for content over the next decade  :tickedoff:

I believe you're correct in that the mod only requires the base Stellaris and finding discounted keys for it seems easy enough.

This is what's pushing me towards Infinite. It seems the flavor and "feel" will be more Star Trek. I have seen it mentioned that Infinite removed the hyperspace lanes that Stellaris relied on, and that seems to be a near-unanimously liked feature amongst reviews and comments I've seen.

And in Groghead tradition, I will encourage you to spend that cash on the game haha. There, I've done my duty, no more, no less.
