At risk of sounding throughly old, grumpy, and groggy, Civilization has become so "mass-marketized" that, while I-IV remain among my very top games of all time, I can't even whip up the enthusiasm to watch the trailer for VII.
I don't disagree...however Civ V has a lot going for it.
If they bring back unit stacking with some decent balance tweaks, I'm all ears.

Now I am one of those who got Civ V on release (pre-ordered) first game I ever did that. I recall so much bashing over it. It wasn't until Gods and Kings and later Brave New World where things finally clicked.
So with VII, if they can look at what worked in all the previous ones, and improve on that. Maybe with the unit stacking, maybe some other features. But it isn't until 2025 so I will be watching cautiously. I never got into VI sadly, I think it was because I never fully played V or IV enough. Sad huh?
But let's see how VII goes, 2025 is a ways away.
Civ VI is only $3 on Steam. Since nobody mentioned it in this thread can I assume it's not even worth that paltry sum?
^I'm actually re-installing Civ VI now to try it out again. I've played only about 22 hours of it and barely remember it at all, other than not liking the extremely cartoony look of most of the graphics. I may pick up some heavily discounted DLCs if I feel differently about it this time.
I bought Old World on sale a while ago and never put much time into it. Might go back to that rather than piking up Civ VI. Sorry for derailing the thread.
I actually got quite a bit out of Civ VI, played several very long, asynch games with 4-6 human players (games that included our own Mr. Jason Pratt). That was fun.
My mind is open on Civ VII.
But like Geezer, I invested in Old World...and enjoy it...so no urgent need to scratch the Civ-like game itch.
Steam says I have ~300 hours in Civ V and ~220 in Civ VI. I honestly can't remember the differences between the two. I think the key is to wait until all the DLC comes out and buy a bundled version. I recall both Civ V and VI being a bit weak and lacking in features upon initial release.
I've been playing and enjoying Warhammer 40k: Gladius again recently. It was given away free on Steam and GOG about a month ago so some of my friends installed it and we've been playing online matches. It's basically Civ 40K but with zero diplomacy, only war. It suffers from the same problem as the Civ titles in that the base game is lacking a lot of features so picking up the DLC is almost a requirement. They go the Paradox route though and make everything DLC. Want new factions? Buy the DLC. Want a full roster of units for your faction? Buy the defence, assault, fortifications, weapons, and heroes DLCs
I got Gladius when it was free. Like Old World I don't have much time played. So many games, so little time.
Old World is quite awesome - I love it because it concentrates on the ancient era only.

I am guilty of this in all civs except 2 - as a completionist nerd I buy it, play one game n a relatively easy level, win, tick that box and move on - it's hard to say wether it's the games fault or mine for not wanting to go back - in this advent of uncompleteable grand strategy open ended games I usually play I always come back or restart and go again because there's no end to try and achieve - of the games I do own with a fairly achievable end goal - civ, koh2 I've beaten them and never returned
I will follow gus' example and see if I can go back to civ 6
^Heh about a year ago I beat KoH2 as Croatia (!!) May play as the Mamluks or Fatimids or Abbasids soon.
Firing up Civ VI right now to see if my taste have changed and if the $9.62US is worth it to complete my Civ VI set.
...still too cartoony to me. Oh well. :Nerd:

You're going to make me learn nebulous fleet command aren't you?
I have endless space 2 and all the updates on the back burner too
I'm going to reserve judgement until I see some gameplay videos. Supposed to be some in August.
Be curious to know peoples thoughts on knights of honor 2, new kingdoms game, crusader kings or eu4 vs civ. Yes every game is different and unique which is the preferred groghead game? I keep seeing posts about knights of honor 2 being complex but everytime I look at it seems like a watered down version of paradox and matrix games. Unless Civ 7 offers something in this direction, not sure I'd buy it, like many here I own civ 6 and don't play it much.
I've never been a fan of CIV V (can't really say why) but liked CIV VI a lot (even though i think that some things are too complex). I look forward to CIV VII.
^Heh I'm just the opposite.
KoH2 is more complex than it initially appears and several huge patches since release have made it better.
Field of Glory: Kingdoms is very complex and very groggy:

Reinstalled and gave it a spin this morning - it was 11am, and then it was 1415 - time just disappeared and enjoyed every minute - can't remember if I'm doing well or not - as usual the whole religion, culture, artists thing has passed me by and I'm just building what I need and making more cities

I'd forgotten all about the pure joy of having war declared on me and taking the moral high ground and deciding to wipe the aggressor of the map - Rome attacked, Rome is going down and their asshole friends the Germans
Having a great game - I'm leading on all fronts except faith
Im suzerin of Jerusalem and marching on Rome with their catapults

Prince - which since civ2 is the highest I've ever played on but apparently it's the default 'normal' setting
Yes, yes, yes....but when are we going to play Nebulizing Fleet Command?

I couldn't get into Alpha Centauri because the Tech Tree was so obscure. Almost nothing made sense from the tech names.

The game usefully divides them into four categories (Explore, Conquer, Build, Discover) with numbering so you can get a sense of where they are in the progression. They actually talk about how this exact issue was a challenge and how they thought about it in the designer's notes in the manual.

Yup. I felt a sense of accomplishment in Civ if I did something like build the pyramids. Alpha Centauri just didn't offer that. "You've discovered nerve stapling!". Ok, cool, I guess...

SMAC had the best faction design, the most immersive writing, and the greatest variety of ways to win the game of any 4x title I think I've ever seen. Your unique faction strengths, your culture/government challenges, and the variability of starting-game conditions made each victory seem unique. While some bemoaned the lack of customization options, I rather enjoyed the fact that each faction had acute strengths and weaknesses and you always had to balance around them.
By modern standards, I'm not sure it'd measure up, but at the time, I found the story telling and the replayability first-rate. Few 4x games since then have so seamlessly integrated so many different new features or gameplay conventions in a single title.
That said, most of those new features and gameplay conventions have been used and reused by dozens of titles since then, so nothing about the game would feel groundbreaking or even intriguing today.
Release date has been leaked: Feb 11 (https://gg.deals/gaming-news/sid-meiers-civilization-7-release-date-has-been-leaked/)

Just watched the 26+ minute video. Art/graphics look great. +1 to navigable rivers. Three different Ages, OK. Having to change/evolve into another civilization at each new Age, :tickedoff:. Will continue to keep an eye on Civ VII, but it won't be a day one buy, more likely when the Civ VII Complete/Anthology/Platinum/etc version is on sale.

129.99!?!! Please don't be DLC hell.
I learned my lesson with Civ V, not pre-ordering anything.
Change civilisation as in start as Egypt and change to XXX - surely the whole point of the game is steering your civ through the ages - well, it is for me
YouTuber I follow - has 6 or 7 uploads of him playing the game
looking forward to it but i am in no hurry. Have still plenty to game with CIV VI, Humankind and others.
The game looks really nice. Like the visuals. A little disappointed to see that only 3 periods will be available though. Somehow, it almost like a city-builder now.
^I noticed the three era cap too but I wonder if the tighter scope may make the game better. I am also happily surprised by the art style.
No way will I pre-order but I am more excited for this now than I was.

I'm not going to pre-order, either. At $70.00 for the low end, I'll probably wait for a year, then buy on sale. While I
might pay $70 to an indie to support them (I just did that for
Starship Simulator), I won't do that for a major studio.
I will admit I am much more interested in Civ 7 now than I was 24 hours ago.
I hope there are campaigns contained in one era only.
An option to create campaigns comprised of 1 or 2 eras would be welcome (by me anyway) as well.
If it's true that you dump your old game and start anew with each era, then they have finally turned Civ into a different game. 2-6 were each just variations on the prior.

it seems like the great unwashed are 50/50 over this
however, it seems its optional
I've never done Civ before, but I've been thinking about a city builder that moves through the ages, so i might pick this up down the line (ie at steep discount)
^There is an indy city builder that will be released into early access at the end of the month that spans the ancient era into the Renaissance that looks incredible...of course the full name escapes me at the moment but I think it begins with 'M'.

Interesting... :tophat:
Been looking at the trailer and some of the coverage... sigh. Civ IV and Civ II are two of my top three favorite games of all time (Alpha Centauri being the third, which is arguably the "true" Civ III). And I can't even raise an iota of enthusiasm for this.
Does anyone remember when Civ was a deep, rich, highly moddable, thought-provoking PC game, rather than a DLC-laden mass market multiplatform game coming soon to a PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch near you with pre-order Day 1 bonuses and pay-for-unlockable early access? :/

Add a broken base launch that becomes a complete game over time, and sounds like Paradox to me! :hair:
I actually appreciate the changes to Civ VII. I haven't followed the series closely since IV, as most of the stuff I read made it sound like "the same mathematical concepts with different window dressing", but these changes do seem downright significant to me!
Maybe I'll wait a year after the initial release gets patched and a DLC or two release (so they discount the original game) before I take the plunge!

V was really different in many ways. It did make some positive changes, but in my view of the world (which, granted, is just my own) the mass gaming media "discovered" Civ during the Civ V era and that's when it started to get really dumbed down and closed off (from a modding perspective, which used to be one of the pillars of Civ) and "consolized".
Deluxe and Founders editions will be early access available starting tomorrow...if you want to pay more $$. All editions available on Feb 11.
Reviews are out.
IGN rated it good, giving it a score of 7, but there was a lot of complaining about overly streamlined mechanics and gameplay. This concerns me. Civilization has never been that complex to begin with.
I downloaded it from Steam today and played about an hour. As I expected, some features added, some dropped, some the same. Loads faster than C5 or C6. Crashes on exit, though.

I'll do you one better; I didn't even watch the trailer for VI!
I did thoroughly enjoy V but didn't like the way you had to buy two dlc's to get the full feature set that was standard in IV. Of course I didn't get V until it was heavily discounted because VI was nearly out. Maybe I should look for discounted VI now.
I am in no hurry and will wait a couple of years before buying it (like i did with Civ 5 and Civ 6 btw). It seems to me that the start is a lot roughter than with Civ VI.
So apparently there will be a VR version of Civ VII. Coming Spring 2025.
