Title: Scourge of War: Chancellorsville
Post by: Sigma One on November 06, 2012, 01:29:30 PM
Hi gents,

We just released Scourge of War: Chancellorsville over at Matrix Games and Slitherine for all you ACW real-time wargame fans. It is a stand-alone so you don't need to have Gettysburg to play it, but the expansions Pipe Creek and Antietam aren't set to work with Chancellorsville yet, so you'll still need Gettysburg for those.

Anyone play SoW online? I've heard of the ginormous matches being quite amazing.

Drats....a blessing and a curse. I'm glad to see Chancellorsville using this engine but why not as an add-on like Antietam rather than a stand-alone?  Complaint aside....this is an outstanding game system!

Thanks for the heads up, Scott, I wasn't aware that Chancellorsville was this close to release!

Yeah, took me by surprise too!

I still need to get Antietam.  :)

So besides new maps and scenarios, are there any other new improvements to the engine and such?

I saw the tweet. Already assigned a reviewer.

This is just down the road from me. I need to play this and then visit the battlefield :)

The engine improvements have come in updates in the past, to keep it multiplayer compatible.

So this new standalone.. is it not multiplayer compatible with the previous SOW games?

I am kind of wondering why this was not just sold as an add on versus full game like the other two expansions...especially if only contains new maps and scenarios.

A fresh start at Matrix = a new standalone?   :o

Guys, it IS AN EXPANSION if you already own Gettysburg. You get to it by clicking on "additional battles" where you would find the Antietam scenario. If you don't own Gettysburg, then you can download it and play it as a STAND ALONE.

Sorry for late reply gents, Chipotle called and demanded I eat their food or else someone else would!

The other difference is that Chancellorsville can also get the color manual with the physical orders, for those that like to imbibe on that wonderful sensation :)

I hope I'm not alone in also smelling fresh manuals.

It is interesting pricing for the different expansions...pipe creek ($9 for six scenarios), Antietam ($19 for 26 scenarios), and Chancellorsville ($29 for 20 or so scenarios).  Just curious what made the new game $10 more than Antietam.   In the end doesn't matter since I will likely buy anyways, just seemed strange to me:)

Seems to run smoother than previous versions. Can't beat a good expansion with performance and graphical updates

Looking forward to playing these someday when I don't have three jobs.  Great replacements for SPI's quads.  If Fredericksburg comes out I might have to get a new (used) PC and make the leap anyway.  Enjoyed the Manassas versions even though I haven't played much.  So glad they've teamed with Matrix/Slitherine now.

I really enjoy the series, and really want to see it grow and prosper.

But my only wish for the series is that they would work on regimental level AI and movement.  Too many units suddenly pivoting to strange angles, or walking through other units without penalty.  Just had a battery of mine, set up behind my troops, and start firing canister through the end of one of my lines...apparently causing no damage to my troops.

This stuff really starts to blow the suspension of disbelief factor for me, in an otherwise great game series.

And its not like it can't be done.  While I hardly think the Total War series is realistic...they did get these issues right, particularly in more recent releases.  Sure, one unit can pass through another, but it will pretty much disrupt the formations of both.  Try to fire a cannon through your own troops, some of your guys are going down.  AI run units pivoting to strange angles in the heat of battle seems pretty rare now.

I have never quite "got" this series (even though I own all of them thanks to my sickness) - much for the reasons you give above - in that it generally means I havent a clue whats  going on - and a lot of what is appears very strange. It appears to me a lot of the time that the biggest issue is that the units on screen are cosmetic and dont actually represent the unit in reality - as I see a lot of enemies wheeling through the lines of their foes. I also agree with your comments about total war.

Is this using the same engine as their Gettysburg game or have they upgraded it some?

The same engine but with some improved maps graphically.

If anyone wants to play the Scourge of War series, in some regularly scheduled Co-Op multiplayer games, then check this thread out for info and links:

Co-op is still challenging against the AI, especially depending on scenario, but there's less pressure.

Someone please clear up a point for me - can you play the whole battle through from beginning to end, or is it broken up into pieces on a timeline that you move along? I know there are scenarios that you can play, different parts of the battle and different times, but can you play the whole enchilada, unbroken from start to finish? Same question for Gettysburg and the other Scourge of War games..

It is on a timeline various scenarios at various command levels. If
they tried to do the battle from beginning to end at a certain command level everything would just fall apart... after all it was a three-day battle and you could totally change everything in the first hour.I guess what's the point of playing the battle then
