Title: Night of the Living Grogs - A Zafehouse Diary
Post by: tgb on November 25, 2012, 06:13:04 PM
5 Grogheads have banded together to wait out the zombie onslaught and survive until the rescue chopper arrives.  You can see our starting relationships here. (http://s3.beta.photobucket.com/user/tgb/media/grogheads.jpg.html).

Green is good, and the closer you come to red, the more two people dislike each other.  Right now I hate undercovergeek because he is middle class, and he hates me because I am old. You can spread one rumor a day to try to improve relationships.  Ideally you want everyone in the green, because the better everyone gets along, the more successful the group is at assigned tasks.

Let's see how long we last.

(Oh, and the game gave me the random profession of chef, so I guess you can have more than one of a profession.)

In perfect form, I'm generally disliked by everyone.

Monday, July 4
6:00am
House, 2 William Way

We made it.

Among our fragile group, we have a chef, engineer, surgeon, chef and librarian.

We arrived with a few weapons, a few tools, some food and a few medical supplies.

The five of us are wary of each other. tgb isn't adjusting well to the group, but undercovergeek might be able to hold everyone together.

We found a note saying that a rescue operation was underway and a chopper will arrive soon, but we don't know where or when. We should scour the town to discover as much information as possible.

7:00am
House, 2 William Way
A rumour spread around the group. Through his work as a chef, tgb was featured in the local paper for offering his services free of charge to educated, middle-class people.

On hearing the rumour, undercovergeek, PanzersEast, Longblade and Son became closer to tgb.

undercovergeek is modifying a baseball bat.

Half the rooms in the house have now been searched.

Longblade stopped his patrol because of the attack.

Almost all rooms in the house have now been searched.

Longblade got infected. Turned out those contusions weren't so benign.

We let him live. undercovergeek and PanzersEast supported the decision, saying we needed all the help we could get right now. Son and tgb preferred to kill him.

10:00am
House, 2 William Way
Son and undercovergeek found a bandage and a packet of painkillers in the second bathroom and a snack in the kitchen.

Store, 3 Janice Drive

PanzersEast said he saw Son steal and hide some painkillers while searching the store.

We confronted him about it and he said he'd been using them to cope with chronic pain.

We didn't believe him.

We took the pills from him and he lashed out and struck undercovergeek, giving him small cuts and tears.

But it's doubtful the injury would be worse than the withdrawal symptoms.

Longblade and tgb ate 2 snacks.

There were no zombies inside the storeroom. The whole location is silent.

A small mob is gathering outside the store.

A man arrived saying he's been hunting some kind of super zombie. We agreed to help him - how dangerous could one zombie be?

Right on cue, a zombie appeared. It was faster and stronger than any we've seen. It tore a hole right through our defences.

It went straight for our new companion, who couldn't limp away fast enough. It pulled him apart like a rag doll. Everyone else suffered the same fate. That thing wiped out everyone in the store.

It focused its attention on undercovergeek. He may have died, but he didn't go down without a fight. Using a shotgun and hardened baseball bat, he landed some major hits to the zombie's head and right foot.

So in the end, it was just myself and SoM with 17 Z's outside the door.  The group was doing ok if not for the random event with the stranger and the Super Zombie.  First time I saw that one. And that's why this game has been compared to FTL.....one bad break can really screw you.

If we can't keep a semblance of civilization going, why get saved at all?

The other explanation is that I was too high to know that the zombies were attacking.

Of course LB literally walked out and let a zombie chomp him in the first hour.

It doesn't.

undercovergeek - Killing an infected character can have a devastating impact on the morale and cohesion of the rest of the group and really send you into a downward spiral.

I presume so, if you run out of antibiotics.  I haven't had a game last long enough to get to that point.

Looks like this one will be in the upcoming Indifort "Liftoff" bundle @ GG.... at least that is what I deduce from the image.

So, what is the actual player interaction with the game, tgb? Do you make the general choices for what people do and then sort of see how it unfolds?

Yes, it is.  That's what I mentioned earlier because I saw a larger advertisement for this spate of Indiefort deals that mentioned you can buy each pack for something like $4 and then get 25% off the later ones every time you do so on the previous.

I already have most of the ones I want in those deals, other than Zafehouse, so I'll probably just wait & pick that one up ( and donate a little to whatever charity they taking extra for).

I didn't realize this has some kind of multiplayer.  :o

It doesn't.

undercovergeek - Killing an infected character can have a devastating impact on the morale and cohesion of the rest of the group and really send you into a downward spiral.

Damn!  :(

Wouldn't that be really cool, though, if individual people could make their own decisions for each character?  ;D  I suppose they would have to artificially limit the decisions since the theme of the thing is attempting to get the characters to work together, and that would be to easy in a co-op situation.  Still...  :)

Pretty much.  You choose actions from a menu for each character, then advance the clock one hour.  You read the results of your choices in the diary.

Sounds interesting. I think I'll have to check out the demo.

will get this once it's a little cheaper. i tried the demo but two days gametime and most features disabled didnt satisfy me! hopefully they or some modders come out with more of a sandbox mode. forget the rescue by chopper, let me clear out the town and make it my own!

I agree with that wish for clearing a town.

The little bit of the demo that I tried though, I liked it better than World of the Living Dead.

I'm a bit disappointed for two reasons.

First, my life expectancy is pretty short. That's a net minus.

Second, there doesn't seem to be a career choice for a paranoid wargamer who is part of the vast right wing conspiracy. Seems like a glaring omission. Also a net minus.

I'm guessing that means there is already a Neo-Socialist Priest of the Green Church available as a career choice, then?   :P

;D

I'm sure we can get him a cameo as a fossilized rock or something in the background.

No, I couldn't pick "academic" as a career.  ;)
