Are all these damn clan pack DLCs worth bothering with? They looked pretty thin to me so I never bought any.
Hell, I even recently uninstalled TW Shogun 2 because the updates just kept bloating it up bigger & bigger and I hadn't played in awhile. It was using like over 30GB of hard drive space! WTF?

I've got the Saga Clan as a freebie when I bought the S2 and FotS twinpack from Game. It's fine, but just another playable faction. I'm not a great fan of getting playable clans by DLC if they're just unlockable from the main game. If they've required SEGA to put additional programming effort above and beyond what has already shipped then I'm more sympathetic. As a TW fanboy, I'll probably get the rest, but like Bison, I'll wait for a sale.

I noticed the two competing farm sims (Farming Simulator and Agricultural Simulator), and the ski resort management sim, and a construction team sim. I didn't see the mine shaft blasting sim--that sounds almost as awesome as the Woodcutter.

There are two different options! You have Underground Mining Simulator 2011 (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-UMS2011/underground-mining-simulator-2011) OR you can play the more general Mining and Tunneling Simulator (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-MATS/mining-and-tunneling-simulator)! The options available are staggering.
But I think Stone Quarry Simulator 2012 (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-SQS12/stone-quarry-simulator-2012) might take the cake.

I can really recommend Hegemony Gold - It's a bit like Rome Total War - save that you zoom from the campaign map to the battlefield. A big plus is the emphasis on supply and logistics - you really have to plan things especially when operating away from friendly cities. The game is very well supported by Longbow Games. The only niggle I can think of is that there can be a lot of micro-management for some units that IMO really should have some sort of automatic skirmish mode like Peltasts, Archers and non-"Battle" cavalry - even so you don't want to go head on with any cavalry against formed spearmen facing you!
Anyway, I think it's a great game - I got it from Gamersgate in March 2012 and it's still on my hard drive - if that's anything to go by.... :-\ ;)
Thanks Boggit. As it happens, I've dinked around with the demo, so I do have some idea as to how it plays. I agree the units could/should be more automated and/or less micromanagement-dependent, and I'm not entirely enthralled with it being all in real-time, but otherwise I really like the core mechanics & gameplay concepts.
Now I just gotta find time to actually play the bloody thing!
It's not as deep as Total War IMO, but it emphasizes keeping your armies supplied.
What a lot of people don't mention is that the grand campaign narrative is interesting, despite the hoakey over-voiced voice-over. :P

I think SR:CW is a half-baked game, but I just checked the dev's forums a few days ago and they just released another update that is
supposed to address at least one big issue I had. So they're still providing updates and that's a good sign.. until they decide to stop and cook up a whole new game. I suspect SR:CW will never be completely worked up to how it could be, though, as I'm sure their initial sales has flattened out by now. You don't see many companies creating patches for games they released numerous years ago very much. I think AGEOD is probably has the longest support, and they look to outside help willing to continue patching their old games over the long term AFAIK. The spotty few others may just be some very small ones done in a specific dev employee's past-time.
I'm amazed to hear they're still patching -- i thought this was a title the dev's cut adrift a while ago. that's promising, anyway. may be worth the $5 after all --

You'll still have a big learning cliff to tackle, along with a difficult interface. I've not played since the last couple updates, so I don't know exactly what kind of shape it's currently in.
EDIT: Sounds like the latest Beta Update has some of it's own issues, still. And these guys seem to move as fast as dirt so I dunno how long it'll take them to smooth them all out. At least it sounds as if only a certain group of people are having crash issues *shrug* I'm thinking of firing it up again in awhile due to the crazy amount of diplomatic options and the big worldwide economy to toy with.

Not sure how stable it is on the PC, but (constant cursing aside, mostly from the colorful Irish protagonist) I adored this game on the PS3 and am always ready to sing its praises. US$5.99 is an absolute steal.
The storyline: one former Irish revolutionary bomber gets pissed off by the Nazi invasion and occupation of Paris and its surrounding countryside. Much stylistic cinematic ass-kicking ensues.
I realize there will be people who complain about some lacks of realism in this game. Those people are an enemy of joy.

In short: it's Red Dead Redemption with 40,000 things to blow up and a double-barreled Nazi concept supertank to hijack and drive through the streets of Paris. Utterly gorgeous game and cheaper than should be legally allowed, for God only knows how much longer.
