Title: Holiday Sales Purchase Tracker
Post by: Grim.Reaper on December 23, 2012, 08:50:40 AM
Since there are a million digital stores out there now and almost impossible to search through them all for the holiday sales, thought it might be nice to see what people are "actually" picking up in case it sparks an interest from others, especially if they were unaware of it.  It will also be interesting to see who walks away with the most purchases during the sales season:)  Again, looking to see what people actually purchased, not what they are considering purchasing since we have a couple of other sales threads with that content already.

To be honest, this year's sales have not been that exciting for me so far, maybe because I have everything I already want:)

For me so far, really nothing much.

**Updated**

- Far Cry 3 ($23) - Not through holiday sale, but found cheap anyway
- Borderlands 2 ($21) - Not through holiday sale, but found cheap anyway
- Borderlands 2 Season Pass ($10) - Green Man Gaming

- Lords of the Rings: War in the North ($5) - Amazon
- Hearts of Iron Finest Hour ($5) - Gamersgate

How is Gothic III compared to Morrowind and Oblivion, aside from graphics? Also, I know there were a lot of bugs in the game and the Forsaken Gods add on that were eventually ironed out. Is there a 'final' version to look for or can the game only be patched with mods?

There is a "fan patch" that rebalances the game and fixes most of the bugs.  I just applied it.  As to comparing it to Elder Scrolls games, I haven't started playing it yet, so someone else will have to answer that one.

There is a a community patch that can be found here: http://www.g3cpt.eu/download/3 (http://www.g3cpt.eu/download/3). From reading reviews there is a mod community, that has worked to improve the aging graphics. Its been awhile, and I never got that far into it, it was a lot more unforgiving then Morrowind/Oblivion.

I missed the GG Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion $10 sale. By the time I got home from work the other day it had already ended. I've already got DW and SOTS2, but the original Sins had some of the best space combat visuals I've ever seen in a space 4X, so I'm hoping it goes on sale again.

Gamersgate

Port Royal 3 + DLC  - $7

Steam

Darksiders 1 and 2 + DLC (Steam) for $15. I regret this purchase and should have done some research before I bought it. From what I've been able to find they are not one the better console ports. Don't really have a lot of money to be spending on games atm, so I'm a little annoyed with myself.

Crusader Kings 2 DLC - Songs of the Rus, Russian Portraits, and Russian Unit Pack.

Skyrim DLC - Hearth Fire

iPad:

Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition

Edit: Broke down and bought Skyrim and CK2 DLC. That should be it for me.

Thus far I've purchased:

War of the Roses.   I don't think it's for me.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier.  Not sure about this one yet.  I like the weapon customizer tool but I don't like that everything is locked out until I complete in-game "challenges".  Graphics are kind of weak.  I've played through the first 3 campaign missions so far.  I'm enjoying the various future-tech toys they give me to play with.

Chivalry.  I just bought it now so no opinion yet.  I did play the demo and thought it was pretty fun.  The only reason I didn't buy it at the time was because you couldn't remap the key bindings to the numpad, where us lefties hang out.

This game is a really sore subject for me.  From what I've managed to see of it, it could have been my favourite RPG ever.  Sadly, there are some issues that are deal-breakers as far as I'm concerned.  I'm not sure what it's like to play today, but they were certainly present well into the community-patch cycle.

On a technical level, saving and loading takes ages, even quick save/load.  That really irks me, especially when you keep dying stupid deaths, which leads me to my second point.  When fighting men or orcs or anything humanoid, combat is great.  If you're skilled enough you can take out a group of armoured men.  Attack a single wild animal, however, and the game is a nightmare.  They get you into a stun lock; an attack can knock you down, and very often the animal keeps doing the same attack again and again, preventing you from ever getting up and fighting back.  Rinse and repeat until you're dead, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Again, there's a chance these issues have been fixed by now and I'd welcome such news, but I haven't bothered to check for a while.

So far:

Steam:

- Darksiders franchise collection (already owned the first one, but it's a decent price for the entirety of Darksiders 2).

- Saint's Row the Third Collection (I already owned and finished the main game and pre-order DLC long time ago, but it was a good price for all those DLCs I didn't have).

- Anno 2070 Pack.

- RPG Maker VX Ace

- Sleeping Dogs DLC: Screen Legends pack, Deep Undercover pack

- Testament of Sherlock Holmes.

Gamersgate:

- Holiday Indie Bundles : Ignition + Liftoff (Alien Shooter 2 Conscription, Orczz, Achron [already own a copy via Steam], Syder Arcase, Zafehouse Diaries, Will Fight for Food, Human Tanks, Zombie Shooter 2)

- Kingdom of Amalur DLC: Teeth of Naros, Legend of Dead Kel.

GOG:

- Might&Magic 7
- Might&Magic 8
- Might&Magic 9

- Blackwell Bundle
- Resonance
- Stacking

Other:

- Humble Indie Bundle 7

- Path of Exile support (not exactly a holiday deal, but whatever :P)

And this is just for now. I will continue to update as I continue to waste money on this crap :P

EDIT: Update for December 29.
EDIT2: Another update for December 29 :P

OK, I am DONE with the Christmas sales!  I already went over budget slightly.  :-[

From Steam:

Dawn of War complete collection
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Universe Sandbox
Wargame: European Escalation

From Gamersgate:

IndieFort bundle (just for Zafehouse Diaries really)

A fantastic haul!  I'm like a kid in a sweet shop now. :)

Despite originally saying there were only two titles I planned to get, it ended up being pretty crazy.

Borderlands 2
XCom Enemy Unknown
Batman Arkham City GOTY
Sword of the Stars 2
WH40K Dawn Of War Mega Collection
Warlock MotA DLCs (2 or 3 of them)
WH40K Space Marine (couple weeks ago)
Scourge of War: Antietam (been playing some multiplayer co-op every weekend  8))
Holiday Indiefort 5 (for Zafehouse Diaries)
Kerbal Space Program
Eador: Genesis
Zeus & Poseidon
Great Invasions
Darklands (DOS)
Betrayal At Krondor Pack (DOS)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura (wanted digital version without disk check for this classic)
King of Dragon Pass

***

I went frookin nuts.  And had to force myself to stop because OOTP13, Civ V Gods & Kings xpac, Chivalry Medieval Warfare, and quite a few others were all crying out to me, needing a home.

I definitely have far too much to consume now.   :-\  Good thing all that stuff was marked down quite a bit.

I don't believe I've picked up anything on the Xmas sale, but previously during the Thanksgiving sale I picked up Check vs. Mate and Operation Flashpoint complete collection.

So far nothing's grabbed me on the Xmas sale, although I will likely get F1: 2012 since I'm pretty sure I'm getting a G27 racing wheel for my birthday!   ;D

Other than that, though, I'm sitting pretty good on games right now.  There are one or two Matrix titles I'm still eyeballing, depending on how much Xmas cash I pull in.

Nothing has really grabbed me.

I'm still hovering over the Dawn of War series for £9. I know it's a lot of gaming, but it's not necessarily a game I would put alot of time into.

I'm watching F1 2012. If it goes to £15 or below, I'll bite...it is on sale at £20...but I'm waiting for less. I have 2011...so I can wait.

Nothing else really there or I already have it

I intended to buy nothing since I have so many games I've yet to play.  However, I succumbed to...several.  This is what I've gotten from Thanksgiving till now:

Red Orchestra 2
Commander:  Conquest of the Americas
Anno 2070 Complete
Cthulhu
Far Cry 3
Orcs must Die
Orcs Must Die 2
Overlord
Overlord 2
Overlord Raising Hell
Pirates of Black Cove
Ship Simulator
Universe Sandbox
XCom: Enemy Unknown
Naval War: Arctic Circle
Space Colony HD
Stronghold Collection HD

However all in all I've spent only about $80 and half of that was Anno 2070...so I don't feel too bad.

It's hard not to want to buy Dragon Age Complete (even though I already own the first game with no DLC) and also Portal 2 (even though I beat it on the 360).

Sigh...hopefully I can stop...but there's no telling.

I've manage to restrain myself fairly well thus far.  Since Thanksgiving, I believe I've only purchased various Crusader Kings 2 DLC, Hegemony Gold (plus a few other games as part of a package), and Alpha Centauri (which now includes the Alien Crossfire expansion).

All told, I've spent less than $20.00, which is pretty remarkable for me.

Lords of the Rings: War of the North ($5) at Amazon

I picked up F1 2012 today and put in about 4 hours already.  The game got blasted by the race sim community but I think it's just beautiful and a heck of a lot of fun.  Really, really hard, though!  I am a complete and total newb at sim racing so I have a tough learning curve.  I do think I'm already getting better, though.

I need a break now, my eyes are really starting to hurt.   :(

I got my Xcom steam key at Kinguin, too.  Worked just fine, got it via email immediately.

From all the games I purchased, so far I have a surprise leading game taking up my time and its Spec Ops.....very addictive and gritty.  I know it got mixed reviews, but I can't put it down.  Just something about it is keeping me very interested.....I have already completed 10 chapters, not sure how many there are in total.

I saw Sengoku for $8 and picked that up.  I'm probably going to get all of the DLC for CK2 that I don't already have, once I can figure out what I own and what I don't...

Edit:  Alright, I believe enough is enough.  Following the bouncing Steam ball I found Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusades on sale for $12, or the whole 1C War Game Collection for $25 that included the entire Real Warfare series as well as a couple of Men of War titles which I don't have.  So I ended up with the collection.

Now, I believe I have both enough computer games and board games to last me a full year or more at least...I'm still working through titles from two Xmas's ago!  So no more Steam.  Really, it's enough already.

Sengoku is a great, underrated title.  Probably the most accessible of Paradox's internally-developed games and the one that most lends itself to shorter sessions.  It's refreshing not to have to manufacture a cassus belli every time you want to break some heads. :)

I've got about 6 DLCs for CKII (Russian songs, units, faces...African units, etc), Skyrim: Hearthfire and Lord of the Rings: War in the North queued up to buy.

Grim.Reaper I saw your post on the controller issue for LOTR...what do you think of the game otherwise? And of course if any of the rest of you lot have it...do you like it?

Gus...I have War in the North for the Xbox 360 so take that as you will, but for what it's worth I was disappointed.  It's an extremely standard hack 'n' slash, nothing more.  Coming from Snowblind I was expecting greatness but it's remarkable only in how incredibly average it is; it does nothing particularly well but has no glaring faults either.  If you must have a LOTR game, buy it when it's very cheap.

If you are looking for LoTR fighting instead of something like the Mod for Shadow Magic, you can give this one a try.  I played it a while back and was fun.  There have been several updates and I am behind on it.

I quit smoking a lot of times. What was hard for me was not starting again.  ;) The last time I quit smoking was nearly seventeen years ago--around Valentine's Day in 1996. That time it was easier to quit (and stay stopped!) than cancelling my World of WarCraft subscription.

Amazon is getting all freaky styley on me. I see some XBox wired controllers for PCs for almost 500.00!!

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-360-Controller-Windows/dp/B000BT4CF4/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356916201&sr=1-5&keywords=microsoft+xbox+360+controller+for+windows

:o

That is so weird.....did find this one for $48.....a few days ago I believe the controller was on one of their flash sales for something like $30-$35, but that was just a one hour sale.

Yeah Grim the one you posted is the one I have in my cart right now. Bison the one you posted comes from some far corner of the earth and costs 11.00 to ship :/

It's out of stock now.  It's the way it goes trying to help our Gus.  He always misses the deal by a matter of minutes it seems.

I did Bison...temporarily out of stock from Amazon :/

I am torn between wireless and wired...I sit literally six inches from my PC but there are weird shenanigans going on with the wired controllers...maybe New Egg would be better?

Note that both the "for Windows" and console versions of the wired controller work on a PC.

I'm not sure if the same is true for the wireless version.

Probably a typo. It's from a 3rd party vendor. Instead of $45.00 they hit an extra zero.

Despite the fact I'll probably never learn it...I just bought DCS: A10 Warthog for $9.99 at Steam.  It was too good to pass up.

The good news is, I'm going to have lots of games to play once I"m eligible to retire...in 20 years....

Hehe.  I was given DCS Black Shark for Christmas and just glancing at the manual exhausts me.  I'm not as young as I was when I last had a study sim (Falcon 4).

I think I need an intervention.

I have at least a dozen games in my library that I've purchased and not even bothered to install.  I have another two dozen that I've installed but hardly touched.

Why then do I have this overwhelming urge to buy a train simulator?  I don't even like trains!

HELP!!!

I bought both of the train sims during last years sales...enjoyed them for what they were.  I think I only paid a total of around $10 combined For both...no regrets for those prices.

You could buy a ship sim instead and get this:

And this:

If you're lucky you'll be shipmates with one of these:

Kohan Warchest (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11141/?snr=1_5_9__403) for $4.99 perhaps? For what it's worth, I read in The Big List of 3rd Party DRM on Steam (http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/index.php?page=DRM_Lists/The_Big_DRM_List) that Kohan: Ahriman's Gift (http://store.steampowered.com/app/97120/) has "Inert DRM: SecuROM," whatever that means.

But I am also considering buying some older games from Steam that I can't find anywhere else, particularly Railroad Tycoon II Platinum (http://store.steampowered.com/app/7620/?snr=1_7_suggest__13), which Steam has on sale for $2.49 until January 5th.

Has anyone found any oldies but goodies that every gamer should have?

Well I used my Steam gift card to fill out my ARPG collection on Steam.

Dungeon Siege 1, 2, 3
Sacred 1, 2 Gold
Dins Curse + DLC
Depths of Peril

I'm done with the sales now.  I've got enough ARPG goodness to last a good long while.
