I just hope he does the Thrawn trilogy based off of Timothy Zahn's work.  That is SUPPOSED to be the official ending of the 9 part story.

+1

Those were actually pretty good reads.

I read those, plus the three that came right after them, in the mid-90s when they were re-releasing the original trilogy w/ the "tweaks" (Han shot first!)

I don't think it's going to be based on Zahn's work. Supposed to be an original story.

Agreed.  I'm 100% fine with it.  I've enjoyed most of JJ's work, so I'm somewhat hopeful that he'll deliver something a bit more 'raw', and less focused on an audience of 11 year-olds, than Episodes I-III.

I'd like to see Luke (played by Mark Hamill) mentoring a group of new Jedi.  I want true menace, death and destruction.  No Ewoks, no Jar-Jar.

He did make that "Star Trek" "movie"...so yes, he most certainly can do worse.

However much he failed at it, at least Lucas was *trying* re-evoke the feeling & magic of the original trilogy.  Jar-Jar Abrams clearly didn't give a shit about doing the same for Trek-dom.

(Jesus H.  Only Abrams could cause me to actually *defend* George "Franchise-icide" Lucas.  That is seriously messed up...)

But you're right, the end must be near when you can defend Lucas like you did.  They should really just 86 Star Wars and work on a Warhammer 40K Horus Heresy movie.  I'd really like to see exterminatus with cyclonic torpedoes carried out on the big screen and done properly.

Horus Heresy would be a terrible movie. Mini series, yes. One 2 hour movie? Disaster.

Oh I agree, someone would have to commit to a very long series.  This reason is probably why no WH40K movie set during the Heresy has been made.  The Istvaan drop site massacre alone would require several movies to explain.

Heh.

Yeah, this news definitely set off my nerd rage.  [sheepish grin]  It's just difficult for me to accept that these once-great franchises have been so thoroughly debased, and are highly unlikely to again arise in a form I might recognize.

Abrams alone is not to blame for this, of course -- gods knows the fouling-up of both Star Trek and Star Wars has been a concerted group effort (although Lucas obviously deserves a greater portion of blame for the latter).  However, thanks to Jar-Jar, the damage to both is going to be that much more severe...and more permanent.

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/02/standalone-star-wars/

QuoteAppearing on CNBC to discuss the company's latest quarterly earnings — which beat expectations from analysts, in case you're concerned — Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger offered the first official confirmation of a rumor that's been making its way around the Internet since the House of Mouse purchased Lucasfilm at the end of 2012: There will be more Star Wars films hitting theaters over the next six years outside of the upcoming movie trilogy.

Speaking live on the cable news channel, Iger said, "There's been speculation about stand-alone films that are in development, and I can confirm to you today that, in fact, we are working on a few stand-alone films.... Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films that derive from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So, we still plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and XI roughly over a six-year period of time starting in 2015, but there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time, too."

Mention of a Lawrence Kasdan-helmed spin-off may be the most exciting part of the news for some; the screenwriter of both The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi (not to mention Raiders of The Lost Ark) was known to be consulting on the new trilogy, the first movie of which is currently being written by Michael Arndt, but the prospect of him tackling a Star Wars movie by himself – or, co-writing with X-Men: First Class and Jumper writer Kinberg – is potentially a very good thing indeed.

It's worth noting that these standalone movies — which may or may not include a rumored film focused on Yoda — will mark the first live-action "spin-off" movies from Star Wars' main series intended for theater release in Lucasfilm's entire history. Earlier live-action spin-offs The Ewok Adventure (A.K.A. Caravan of Courage) and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor were made for television, although both were released to movie theaters outside the U.S.

Now those have real possibilities. More excited about either of those characters in their own films than a new trilogy.

What I'd really like to see are films set in the Bioware Old Republic Universe. Hell just take the  KoToR stories and turn them into movies.

If it were up to Lucas, a standalone Han Solo film would take place before Han meets Chewie and Jar Jar Binks would be Han's first sidekick. Thank God Lucas sold the franchise.

There were some pretty horrible novels back in the day about Han and Chewie before the rebellion.
I hope nothing like those abominations are allowed to come to pass.  They were cutesy, supposedly
"funny" and just bad.  There we find out Han's nickname when he was in the Corellian Navy was...
wait for it......"Slick".   [thud]    Because he was slick I guess.  Aaaaaggghhh!  The taste of it still....

I wonder if he'll be some aging war hero politician, or if he continues to be an adventuring renegade.

Ha, this is kind of neat. Nathan Filion is a huge Star Wars fan, and he had a model of Han frozen in carbonite that he brought to the Firefly set. It ended up apparently making an appearance in the background of every single episode. A few of them are shown here (http://www.geekwithcurves.com/2011/01/han-solos-in-firefly.html).

I've actually met Nathan Filion a few times. He's from Edmonton, and he still regularly comes up here for a big improv theater event they do here every year...it's kind of where he got his start. Very, very nice guy. Funny, too.

Actually, a few years back he got in to it with the owner of a local comic store. This particular store kind of has a reputation, and the owner DEFINITELY does, and this certainly didn't help. Did wonders for the guy's competition, though.  ;D

AFAIK Filion also may have the unique honor of playing the only main character on a Big-3 prime-time network TV show who gets to call someone else a "Douche". It was an episode of Castle. Now that I think about it, he may have said it more than once.  :D

I was pretty much in the same boat as you, MD.  Everyone and their mother-in-law had been -- well, "nagging" is probably too strong a word, but only just barely -- me about how much I would like The Big Bang Theory.  The fact that these same people -- many of whom are *not* geeks (at least in the classic sense) -- thoroughly enjoyed the show did make wonder what I was missing.  (Even my 89-year-old grandmother loves the show and was recommending to me!)

Still, I resisted watching it for a long while, if only because I was sick of everyone talking to me about it.  As it happens, I did finally start watching TBBT during the...third, I think?...season, and that was only after I happened to walk past the TV one evening while my roommate was watching an episode.

After that, I'll admit I quickly got hooked, and I finally understood why so many folks had recommended the show to me.  That being said, I won't nag you to watch it, as I went through that myself!  I do strongly suspect you'd enjoy it too, but you have to want to find that out for yourself.  ;)

Believe me, I know only too well where you're coming from.  That's pretty much my life as well, minus the girlfriend (although at least I spend a fair amount of time with my buds -- aside from you guys here -- when I can).  In fact, it's probably even more difficult for me to watch TV, as I'm usually only just getting out of bed in the evenings.  Gah!

Just remember - Han signed first!

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/03/star-wars-hamill-fisher-ford-episode-vii/

QuoteThe rumors started almost as soon as it had been announced that Disney had bought Lucasfilm and would release Star Wars Episode VII in 2015. Even before we knew anything about the new movie, the consensus from Star Wars fandom at large seemed to be that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher obviously needed to star in it.

In the months that followed, each member of the trinity teased some level of involvement in the project; Hamill mentioned to Entertainment Tonight that the actors hadn't signed contracts but were "in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm." Earlier this week, Fisher told Palm Beach Illustrated point blank that she would return for the latest installment, an admission quickly followed by a statement from her publicist that of course she was joking. (Ford, meanwhile, has been more circumspect, using anonymous third parties to signal his openness to the idea.)

Now, however, George Lucas has let it slip that he signed all three actors for the next movie, if not more beyond that. In a Bloomberg Businessweek story about Disney's buyout of Lucasfilm, the Star Wars creator reveals that Lucasfilm "had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison — or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation [when the Disney deal came about]. So I called them to say, 'Look, this is what's going on.'"

Lucas seemed to immediately realize what he had said and attempted to backtrack from the admission, saying "Maybe I'm not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them," and adding, "I won't say whether the negotiations were successful or not." Don't worry, George. I think that saying that you "had already signed" the actors pretty much says it all.

Still, Disney — and director J.J. Abrams — are the ones at the helm of Star Wars now, and they have yet to confirm the casting. So when will we hear the original word on the return of the classic Star Wars trio? And should we expect more familiar faces from the original trilogy when Episode VII debuts in 2015?

I don't get the big deal with having those three back. I'd rather they go in a new direction entirely. Maybe a cameo from one of them, but all bring all three back?

The best thing they could do is to just have the droids in the new ones. They were the common element between all the films. And they need a Wookie in the new one. Can't go wrong with a Wookie.

Looks like they're probably going to pick John Williams to do the music.

At least that will be good.

QuoteDuring a press conference in Berlin for "Star Trek: Into Darkness," director Abrams made it sound like Williams might be in the fold. "Again, for 'Star Wars,' it's very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film because he was there long before I was," Abrams said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

No more clone stormtroopers?

The Rebels TV series and the new canon novels establish that the Empire phased out the Clones for conscripts.

Clones were a relatively small expensive force, designed to fight and win a war, and to eliminate the Jedi problem.

Stormtroopers are a huge cheap force, meant less to fight an equal enemy and more to suppress and rule over a large population.

I think that's just the gear getting more advanced.

According to Rebels the Stormtrooper Corps looks almost entirely Clone free by about a decade before A New Hope.

They haven't addressed the clones yet in Rebels, but I'd wager any still in service were limited to elite units.

A flaming light sabre?!? Are the 2 extra bit cigarette lighters?  ???  ::)

The sound is different and the beam isn't well contained, almost like an early, less refined form of the technology.  The cross guard is impractical, but it screams old, perhaps ancient. Couple that with the worn and disheveled look of it's owner, I'm guessing this may be a Sith Lord that hasn't been around for a long, long while.  Perhaps something asleep that has...awakened?

I did too, but they were more Star Wars than Star Trek.  They very seriously lacked what made Star Trek, well, Star Trek.  Roddenberry would've despised them.

Abrams doesn't seem to be messing up here.  He's made decisions to go to practical effects over CGI, and he's brought back Lawrence Kasdan of Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark to do the writing rather than his typical cronies (Lindeloff, Orci, Cruze). He also doesn't have complete control, and he's only doing the first of the three sequels.

As a straight shooting director, he's competent.  He won't let a particular personal style get in the way, and hopefully he's learned his lesson on the lens flare.

That crossguard would make more sense if it were slanted forwards, like a medieval Oakeshott type 7 crossguard but at an even sharper angle.

Indeed.  As it is, it looks more likely to disembowel the user rather than defend the hand, at least if it's used in the style of other lightsabers.

Roddenberry's vision of what Star Trek should be was Star Trek The Motion Picture.  He was yanked from involvement from Wrath of Khan, other than an Executive Producer credit.

The first Trek reboot film was pretty good. Was it in the 'spirit' of classic Trek? Who knows, who cares. After suffering through Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis, I was glad for a new direction.

Into Darkness was a hot mess but it was still better than any of the films mentioned above.

Pretty much agreed.  The three Star Trek moments that were pure Roddenberry were The Cage Pilot, Star Trek TMP and Season 1 of TNG.  None of those have ever been considered the height of Star Trek.

Abrams did something fresh, and injected a touch of Star Wars simplicity into Star Trek.  I didn't mind it, and felt it was a nice direction to take it.

It's very clear from his directorial style Abrams is a fanboy of Lucas and Spielberg.  This is the property he always wanted, and he's not being given the reboot mandate he was given in Star Trek.  It seems in Star Wars he's trying to resurrect what came before in the original trilogy rather than reinvent the wheel.

I think Lucas did plenty enough wheel reinvention on his own property with the Prequels.  Just like with Roddenberry and Star Trek, sometimes maybe the best thing is to take the idea from the idea man and give it to someone that can make a good story.

Heh, no need to explain.  As I say, I completely understand that Abrams trek was about as far from Star Trek as Independence Day is from 2001.  I just say I like it for its own thing.

When I refer to sometimes Roddenberry's hand wasn't the best for his own creation, I am in no way saying Abrams vision was better.  I'm more crediting guys (and gals) like Gene Coon, DC Fontana, Ron Moore, Harve Bennett ect.

After watching some of those fan made previews of the new Star Wars I'm a little hopeful now about the new movie.  This is a good thing as Lucas distorted the saga to the point where it was not only unrecognizable but also 'un-natural'.

I believe that Abrams with reinvent the saga but in a good way.  Will it be true to the Zahn novels?  Probably not but maybe, just maybe we will see a renaissance of all things Star Wars.  Not some stupid gungan feldercarb wrapped up in ewok poo doo.

Ewok poo doo, well done!

Star Trek TMP was a snooze fest, except for that bit with the Klingons and Goldsmiths soundtrack.  Thank god for ST II WOK and Nicholas Meyer, and James Horner back then, otherwise we would have been forced to watch another search for god.

Oops Shatner did that in ST V :)

The bad movies were just stuff you kind of expected in a TV episode, and by 1987 you had TNG every week ( another reason why V was lukewarm).

I liked The JJ Abrams trailer, nice to see some familiar uniforms and the Falcon.

one of the major plot twists in the comics, and I think its carried over in the books, is that Chewy dies trying to save Han and Leias kids.  it would be quite the motivator/cliff hanger for the new movies.

I expect this is, after all, the re-emergence of the Sith or some Dark Side Jedi attempting to become one after their extinction.  Since it's now moving towards the New Republic period, that seemed to be the common theme from literature anyway.

Then I immediately thought, that could be seen as racist given the picture.

Then I immediately thought, well f&ck, maybe the Stormtroopers will shoot better now.

The only bad thing I saw in that teaser was the ridiculous f'ing droid.

The exhaust thing is the most likely explanation, and there are some insiders that have hinted that it's correct.

Disney/Lucas went to a LOT of effort to change the ancient Sith home world's name from Korriban to Moriband, to the extent of changing the name in SWTOR and copy writing the name Moriband.

Given earlier leaked frontal image of the Sith from the trailer, which I will not share here due to spoliery consideration, my theory is that the armor, robes saber and other things are ancient tech scavenged from the ancient Sith homeworld.

When it's a lightsaber!  Whatever whiz bang technology they have in Star Wars, I'm pretty sure that lightsabers aren't just coherent light.  I imagine the tech of a lightsaber is similar to that of a Star Wars blaster, light and gas plus some sort of containment. Of course, when you go all out, to apply real, good science to Star Wars, you're going to be pretty unhappy.

Pretty much this.  Light and plasma with some sort of containment tech.

Blasters and turbolasers seem to work on the same principle, as does the Death Star superlaser.  Despite the word "laser" worked into everything, even on film you can see the particles accelerated along he beam.

It came down to a snap decision by George Lucas while he was still in charge of the Clone Wars.  He changed the name during a story development meeting because he didn't like Korriban. In Clone Wars they refer to the planet as Moriband when Yoda visits it.

The fact that Disney/Lucas put a lot of effort into enacting the change across the canon makes me think the planet might appear in the film.

The changes to what is considered canon seems like a huge eff you to the fan base and the contributors like Zahn. Lucas was all too willing to cash in on others keeping Star Wars alive in the years between ROTJ and the prequels. And then it all just gets erased. I wasn't a huge fan of most of the EU stuff, but I respect that it meant something to a lot of other fans. Seems crappy to say now that none of it is really part of the Star Wars universe.

^ Honestly, I thought that the moment I heard JJ was directing this. There was no way they were going to stick with established canon, and admittedly that is another reason to keep me away from this film...at first, anyway. Star Wars is just too much of a draw for me not to see it, and to your point mirth, I'm pretty sure Lucas et al realizes that and knows they can do whatever the frig they want and they'll still rake in billions.

Now that I'm thinking of it I'm wondering how many Asian actors they're going to cast in this to pander to the Pacific Rim market.

"Korriban": has subtle connotations maybe something to do with crows.

"Moriband": an actual word for "dying" with one letter changed.

Thanks George. Go away now.

Btw, Michael Kaminski's Secret History of Star Wars is a pretty amazingly researched project tracing how Lucas wrote or plotted the previous six films. Paperback's pricey but the Kindle edition's less than $9. Well worth it for anyone interested in story development generally and/or intellectual property development and/or Star Wars production.

The Falcon is bound to have a fridge.

Though I imagine he'll fly the Falcon much slower this time around, nowhere near his Kessel run 'speed' or 'time,' and even if he tries, he'll have his left turn signal on the entire way.  ;D

I do hear that this time around Chewbacca is being played by Shia LaBeouf, hence the beard.

Hell.. swinging around a long weightless "blade" of plasma-wot-not would already be terribly dangerous to oneself.

Try flipping your flashlight around all willy nilly while it's on.  You could probably tell where you'd slice yourself up in no time if it was something like that.  ;D

Hehe. That's how Jar Jar Abrams operates. Don't be surprised when he destroys Hoth or Tatooine. I'm sure there's more nerd rage to come.  :D

When Lucas made Jar Jar all canon Star Wars material was erased, at least for me.  Lucas himself gave his most loyal fans a huge eff you creating that train wreck of a prequel series.

I'm all for Abrams blasting the whole original Star Wars story to smithereens to be replaced and remolded in his own vision.  Perhaps this tired Star Wars series will finally get new life breathed into it.   ;)

And if the new stuff fails to satisfy, then I'll just go back to watching THX 1138 over and over again until the day I die.   :2funny:

The prequel trilogy is indeed all kinds of train wreck so it's silly to point out how many shortcomings it has. The one that resonated most with me was their use of relatively big-name actors (some more than others of course) instead of unknowns, like in the original series. That turned me off even before the first one hit the screen. And sure enough there were plenty of more reasons to not like the prequel trilogy...that was a foundational issue for me, though.

My favorite part of Star Wars has always been the Jedi. I wish they would do a movie centered around one or two Jedi knights, maybe under cover on a mission or something. And not a lot silliness, make it much more serious.

And the first thirty of Attack of the Clones. Or a lot of that movie actually.

And much of the two hour original Clone Wars animated 'movie'.

And the first twenty minutes at least of Sith.

That's what I'm hoping for.  Something with a bit more "grey area" to the  story, perhaps?  That would be nice.

Enough with the childish crap.  The original two flicks didn't have shit like Jar Jar, Ewoks, or Rollerball Droids.  Hopefully the latter doesn't use up more than the bit we saw.  I want to see some more adult oriented stuff, and that should make sense since the biggest superfans have been adults for a long time now.  To whatever writer's credit, I think the last of the 'Prequels' veered towards the darker direction but from what I understand some other writer(s) had to come in and do that because the usual bunch couldn't.  Hopefully those were all sacked along with Lucas' control and the universe can progress.

Clone Wars also stayed part of the Canon.

The current Canon includes all the films, Clone Wars (cgi) TV show, Rebels TV show, and the new novels that started being released this year.

The EU is now classified as Star Wars Legends.  They were never actually Canon, even previously, having been given the status of "Official" by Lucasfilm.  The Thrawn trilogy, and hence pretty much everything built on it, became apocryphal upon the release of the prequel trilogy, as the prequels didn't follow Zahn's concept, time frame or story for the Clone Wars.

That said, Lucas cherry picked some things from the EU he liked, like the name Coruscant, and Palpatine's name.   From what I saw back before I stopped following spoilers for the new films, a few EU elements are sneaking into the new films as well.
