Title: Battlestations Pacific
Post by: Gusington on January 30, 2013, 09:07:54 PM
Anyone play this? It's billed as an action game of the Pacific War and has both US and Japanese campaigns. It looks to model both naval and air combat. I've been looking at reviews over at Metacritic and they're not bad but not particularly great either. I get a little wary of 'action games' but this one is drawing me in.

Is that Beetlejuice in your frickin avatar?

What is it you didn't like? Too 'action gamey'?

I have the first one (midway). It is fun.  But i got stuck in the campaign.  The multiplayer is promising but there aren't enough players.

You might as well wait for World of Warships.

I enjoyed it, and still play it from time to time.  Great for those evenings after work, when you don't really want to think much...just watch stuff go boom.  If you can get a good price for, I recommend going for it.

Arizona's reviews is pretty accurate.  I have the same feelings about Midway. But Pacific is more polished and has more variety than Midway.

Great review Tank, actually makes me want it more :) Jomni, Tank...is there any reason to get the Midway game and Pacific...does Pacific do everything the other games do better?

Hey, if you want to pick it up again, I can give you that same thrill with the extra benefit of not getting paid. Ask anyone: it's awesome!

I played the first game in the series Battlestations Midway and mostly liked it except for the missions that required one to fly a plane. Never could get a joystick to work properly and I suck using a keyboard to fly!

I bought Battlestations Pacific from Gamersgate last year for 5.99.  At that price the game is well worth it.  It's not a true sim but more of an action game.

There are two historical campaigns you can play; One American and one Japanese.  The campaign story is linear but entertaining enough at the pricepoint I bought the game for.

You can play online against another player but the servers are all but deserted these days.  You can also play against the ai in skirmish mode and pick what map and what session parameters you want to use.  Is it going to be a capture x amount of bases for the win or are you going for an invasion game limited to the task of protecting those landing barges as they attempt to storm the beaches?

You can fly planes (fighters, torpedo and dive bombers, and the 4 engined heavies) sail ships of all shapes and sizes from PT Boats to Battleships and you can man base defenses such as AAA and howitzers.  You can even pilot submarines!

I recommend getting a cheap flightstick for flying but if you have an xbox controller that will work too.

All in all I like this game but in my opinion it does not reach out and make you an addict to it.  Good game for when you get that occasional urge to to blow stuff up with massive 16" battleship guns.

If you do end up getting it Gus you will have to create an account on Microsoft to play however as this is a Games for Windows game.  If you're willing to do that let me know and we can play multiplayer against each other or co-op!

Thanks W8. I've got a flight stick and an XBox controller. But I will probably wait for it to drop from 20.00 from what you said. Why pay 20 when I can pay 6?

Have you guys played coop before?

Cool we should hook up sometime then.  PM me for time schedules.

Exactly, don't buy at 20 you'll regret it.  I have not played co-op before only against another human.  But let me clarify, I don't think you can play the campaign co-op style.  Only in online skirmish mode.

Grabbed it; Midway was only $6 and some change; picked that up as well. (I feel like I may have had that already in a hardcopy somewhere though...)

I wonder if my old Flightstick Pro will work on my new Win8 monster rig....? I badly need to pick up an XBox controller at some point, too.

I got it, luckily for under $5.00, and couldn't get out of the tutorial....the UI is a head-scratcher, at least it was at my feeble intellect....maybe I was just impatient and didn't give it the time necessary to figure it out, but it quickly became a 'I'll give it another try later' game.

^I was confused and frustrated at first with this game as well.  The controls are not really explained that well in the online tutorial nor in the manual that came with the game.  Then I found this:  http://ebookbrowse.com/battlestations-pacific-manual-pdf-d108501125

Starting on page 10 you see some very important advanced control options that were giving me trouble figuring out how to use until this guide showed the way.

Ah no worries Tuna.  I use the link to read the manual online only.  I haven't downloaded it but now I'm thinking I'll need to stop using that site.  Thanks for the heads up.  Don't know why my rig did not detect the danger but it could be because I didn't try to download the file.   ???

I hope I'm not providing something that was already threaded/posted but there is a good article on Battlestations Pacific here. It provides tips, cheats, walkthrough, mission table of contents, controls, etc.

http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Battlestations:_Pacific

Maybe it's helpful in some way. I have both Battlestations but overall I've too many games and don't have the time or energy to play most. Probably need to sell all but a few. But which ones? Like many I'm a pc "wargame" collector more than a devoted player.

Forgive me Lordz Studio for I have sinned!

Considering how many games I've bought from the Lordz, I think they'll be pretty lenient about my not having played many/any of them yet. ;)

I almost consider wargaming a charitable hobby where I reward creativity and hard work while only getting a nominal item in return, like supporting the fine arts. This is why I don't really mind paying elite prices for wargames.

That being said, I didn't mind paying a total of around $10 for the Battlestations games, either.  ;D

It's probably an exe because it's a self-extracting archive that also bestows some advertising stuff upon you.  I doubt it's anything too bad.  It's always a good idea to scan stuff you download from untrusted websites though, of course. :)
