There's another spiritual successor to Master of Magic in the works--Worlds of Magic from Wastelands Interactive (http://www.wastelands-interactive.com/index.php/games/worlds-of-magic). For more information, check it out on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/WorldsOfMagic).
I wish them luck.
Thanks for the heads up. RPS also has a feature on it today.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02/11/who-will-master-the-worlds-of-magic/
Heres a feature list (so far):
Quote
• D20 System – Units, Spells and Heroes will all draw from the D20 rule set during the battles.
• 4X deep playability – Explore, exploit, expand and exterminate in a world of magic, diplomacy, and war.
• Hero Units – Recruit heroes to lead your forces into battle.
• Twelve Spell Circles – Focus on depth in a single school, or gain the ability to cast incredibly diverse spells.
• Unique Races – Each race offers the ability to create exclusive units, with peculiarities, weaknesses and strenghts, but also balanced.
• Settle Powerful Cities – Control production, research and even magical power, in order to create powerful armies.
• Multiple victory conditions – War is not the only way to conquer the world; make treaties, establish trade routes or use peace as a tool for domination.
Lord, how many decent MoM successors (if this turns out good) will this make in a two year span? Masters of the Arcane, Fallen Enchantress, Eador: Genesis, FREAKING AGE OF WONDERS 3 (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=4668.0), and now this?
I half expect the Dominions developers to announce Dom4. (Not exactly a MoM successor but close enough.)

Alas, no such thing. The devs have stated Dom 4 is not something they intend to be doing (at all).
Besides, with CoE being their latest game still having the feel and looks of Dom 3 (albeit a lite version), I think Dom 3 is going to be king of the hill for a long time anyway and 4 isn't needed. :)
LoL.
It seems that just like with every other genre, once 1 or 2 people make some games in it, suddenly masses of developers create games in it
simply because of the growing hype. :P
In anycase, I look forward to playing this one as well.
Awesome news. Between last year, this year, and maybe next year, the number of fantasy 4x/grand strategy games that will have been released is almost embarrassing...but I'm not gonna complain!
The beauty of this one, if the Wastelands Interactive boys follow through their normal modus operandi, in that it should be mod-friendly and allow lots of fiddling to be done by enthusiasts.

That's what I was thinking as well. Looking forward to more information on this one!
Good move to use D20 ruleset. No need to reinvent the wheel.
It's good to see the guys at Wasteland doing something besides world war 2. :)

This is the first positive comment I have seen about d20. You would not believe the other sites where people think this is the devil! I like d20 and I agree, I think it will add a nice touch. I was interested HOW they could do it, if the product was not licensed through WotC.
What is d20? Is that just like the ad&d system? If so I'm not sure why that is necessarily a good or bad thing.
Yeah. The system that bases everything on a roll of a 20-sided die.
D20 is derived from 3rd Edition. One game I can think of off the top of my head that uses D20 was Knights of the Old Republic. D20 is the core rules concept yes, but it can be adapted to do just about anything. Its a system that integrates attacking, defending, skill use, and feats into a nimble package. D20 is more than robust enough to handle the heroes in World of Magic. In fact, it should provide a detailed leveling up experience for your heroes.
I would take a D20 ruleset 9 times out of 10 over something a developer dreams up for character development.

They even adapted it to use for the Call of Cthulhu RPG, although I thought that was more of a stretch.

D20 was actually used for the Star Wars paper & pen RPG, before KOTOR was done, so that probably had something to do with it although the video game was heavily trimmed down and 'adjusted' (more so than 3rd Ed D&D-to-PC games were).
Wasteland has posted some ingame screenshots (http://www.facebook.com/WorldsOfMagic/posts/493661657359989) of their Worlds of Magic (http://wastelands-interactive.com/index.php/games/worlds-of-magic).
A small write up from SpaceSector (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2013/04/worlds-of-magic-master-of-magic-spiritual-successor-aspirant/). Looks like WoM is going Kickstarter.
Saw that. Already pledged. :P

I'm wavering...trying to decide if I want to do another KickStarter. ~$13.60 for a digital version of the game + digital manual + access to the BACKER-ONLY forum + access to the Worlds of Magic BETA! Very tempting... :-\
Hi everybody.
It is great to see that Worlds of Magic has got a friendly thread.
Yes, we have decided to go to Kickstarter with the game. This will let us finish the game earlier with assets of good quality.
You are indeed right that we are planning to make the game as mod friendly as possible, also as we are making Worlds of Magic on Unity engine, the patching and improving the game will be pretty easy.
You all know that we are supporting our games longer than average, so I think you are not risking anything.
It would be great if you would spare few minutes and visit the KS site of the project
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/304725524/worlds-of-magic-a-new-classic-4x-fantasy-game
if you like what you see, please share the info with others.
If you would like to ask some general questions, feel free to do it, if you have some ideas, thoughts or would like to discuss the details of the game, our forum is the best place to do it.

Thanks for all the kind words said in this thread.
Just an interesting tidbit from an update from the Worlds of Magic Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/304725524/worlds-of-magic-a-new-classic-4x-fantasy-game?ref=live)...

George Edward Purdy, known for his work on both Master of Orion and Master of Magic has graciously accepted the position of Lead Artist for Worlds of Magic!
Update: Just 44 hours left! They've already made it, and are now working on stretch goals. :)
One small feature that made me nerdgasm: Normal units can, on occasion, be promoted to Champions/Heroes. Glee!
Yes indeed.
We made it.
You can still give us a hand and back or spread the word
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/304725524/worlds-of-magic-a-new-classic-4x-fantasy-game
There are some fantastic stretch goals ahead of us and we can achieve all of the together!
A couple new things to take note of...
First off, there's a new interview (http://www.wargamer.com/article/3443/interview-worlds-of-magic-wargamer.com-interview) up at WG.
Secondly, the devs have launched a second Kickstarter campaign (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wastelands/worlds-of-magic). It sounds like the purpose of this second one is to give their art budget a boost; apparently they've been improving the game's visuals quite a bit (which admittedly does seem apparent in the new video). I also wonder if this new KS campaign isn't in part to accommodate those who expressed a wish to support the game (but didn't find out about WoM til after the first KS campaign had already concluded); I advise you not quote me on that, though. ;)
It looks like the rewards are similar to the first campaign. However, the second campaign also mention this:
QuoteOur Veteran Backers
Those of you who backed our first campaign and have returned to back us again may be wondering just how the rewards are going to work. First, all your pledges are going to be combined. For instance if you pledged 50 pounds in the first campaign and 30 dollars in the second campaign then you'll have $110.97 (£68.52) that you can "spend" on rewards. You'll be able to pick rewards from either campaign with the exception of certain limited rewards. All Veteran backers can also get the Veteran Pack for just $1.00.
QuoteThe Veteran Pack is an add-on offering an additional Hero, Champion, Titan, and Sorcerer Lord. It is available to anyone, but our backers who also backed our first campaign (Veterans) can get it with a $1.00 pledge.
I know it's a gimmick, but I may just have to fork over that extra $1.00. :P
For those wondering, right now WoM is still on track for a January 2014 release. However, the devs have said they won't hesitate to delay it if they feel the game isn't ready yet, particularly if the Kickstarter backers concur.
Hey all,
So let me take a part in this discussion :)
Indeed trying to catch all of those who wanted to support us, but missed the first campaign is the reason why we have launched the second one.
Also very important for us is to get more funds to make this game look better.
The one buck Veteran pack is just a kind request to show people that the Veteran backers still support our vision.
Now about the really important thing.
In this campaign you will find a link to a downloadable and browser based arena - a tactical part of the game.
