It's been a while since I've played Civ V but now I'm getting the itch again. I enjoy the game more modded. What do you all suggest?

Glad you asked. I don't play the game un-modded anymore. I'm showing over 500 hours playing Civ V, so God only knows how many hours I've given to Sid Meier in my lifetime!
Here is what I subscribe to. A * means I've subscribed but haven't experienced it in-game yet. I'm not listing maps, except for the Tectonic Map mod, which generates excellent maps!!!
The United Kingdom
Unlimited Barbarian XP
City States Leaders (very nice chrome)
Units-Airships and Land Ironclad *
Reforestation *
Working Workboats
Pioneers *
Really Advanced Setup
Iroquian City Names
Celtic City Names
Tectonic Map
City Limits
Das Deutsche Reich
Ethnic Units
Civil War Civs
Reveal Iron Early
Strange Religions
Extended Eras
Colored Religions
Goody Huts-No Maps
and my personal favorite:
Maps-Rotating Start Positions
Have fun!
I don't know why but I can nervous about modding the game. Plus I have no clue where to start. Can you get those all through STEAM workshop or are they all from different sites?
where does one find these mods, and what (in a sentence or two) do they do for you?
I'm more than happy to drop a mod or two into place and give it a whirl, but I haven't a clue how to start
They are all Steam Workshop except for the last two, which came from one of the Civ fanboy sites ( I don't remember which, but Google will help). Most of them simply add chrome, such as the city names and strange religions, but there are modified civilizations (such as Great Britain under Churchill, the Blue and the Grey or Hitler's Germany) and game adjustments (such as unlimited Barbarian xp) which tweek the gameplay to a greater or lessor extent.
There are a lot of map choices, which can be fun. As I indicated, the tectonic map generator does a great job in creating interesting continents and it's almost all I use now.
As far as running the mods, I've had no trouble....once I figured out what the hell I was doing. Basically, you upload (or subscribe via Steam) what mods you want, start the game, hit "Mods", check all the mods you want to use, hit "accept", then "single player", "set up game", and dive into it. The important thing to remember is that, once you have a game in play, do not adjust your mods further. You can occasionally get away with adding a mod (maybe), but taking one away will cause your game to not load until it is re-installed. You might occasionally run into a mod which is unstable, but I avoid that by only choosing mods with at least four-star ratings from fellow players on Steam. So far, so good.
We have been using the one from Bloublou. He has done a number of utility mods. All very good. Strange religions, and ship repair. Been a number of fun games with those. Should add these are on Steam.

I like maps so this sounds interesting. Can you elaborate on what you mean by "interesting continents?"
Wow Dog...I should have known you were addicted to this stuff. For those who haven't modded...try this page:

Think I'll try the airships and land ironclads next. Right now I just set up a pan-Asian sort of game with slowed down era progression to stop at 1918 tech.

Poor choice of words. "More realistic continents" is more what I meant.
Cool stuff! I haven't played a decent match of Civ in a long time anymore. Great to see the modding community so busy with this.
Gives me the itch to jump in again too.
Thanks for the list of mods so far.
man, y'all have no idea what a pain in the ass it is to enable mods on the version of Civ V I have, since I didn't get it through Steam.
holy shit...

Quoted for truth. ;D
I was browsing through the CivV mod workshop on STEAM last night and was a bit overwhelmed with all the mods to chose from. I have no idea where to even start.
Indeed...that's why I posted here.
My fruituper runs mods just fine!
Installed this mod on my MAC version of CiV following the instructions and works for me. Btw every grog who has CiV should get this mod. It's just like HOI only turn based. ;)

^^ are you using the Steam installation or the App store version?
I bought the game in STEAM and at the time I didn't realize that the MAC version came with the Windows version. Then I simply logged into STEAM on my MAC and downloaded CiV to my library and I was all set. I got the mod by searching for it via STEAM. Installed that and I was good to go.
yeah, the non-Steam version requires a variety of under-the-hood tinkering to get the mods to work
Exactly, which was what I had to do for my Windows version of the game. At the time I installed this particular mod the mod was not available via STEAM. The under the hood tinkering wasn't too too bad but the mod author did provide excellent installation instructions which were clearly laid out.
The fact that the authors' instructions were clear and that the mod itself was well thought out speaks volumes about his work.
anyone used any of these?

there's some very cool-sounding new civs there that I might want to try using in a game
Here's one for Steelie

QuoteThe US Air Force as a playable civilization.
Leader: Paul Airey; First Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force
Unique Trait: Physical Conditioning: all melee receive +1 movement
UU: MQ9 Reaper; Replaces bomber, cheaper and starts with evasion I
UB: recruiting station; replaces forge, no iron required, also improves aircraft production.
I gotta wonder about that "Trait" though... And shouldn't the unique building be "Golf Course"? I mean, seriously, have you ever been to an air force base without one?
^Nice, but the "Texan" civilization is the mod I claim 8)
And I've used CivFanatics, but there is no comparison as to the ease of use between Steam Workshop and anything else. I've modded Civ as long as it was do-able, and most of the time it was an exercise in frustration. The Steam Workshop may be one of my favorite things ever, game wise.
Air Force....bonus for physical fitness....yeah ok
Full disclosure here...it wasn't until this afternoon when, after the third time, I realized you have to load your Civ V modded game EVERY TIME through the mods menu to have the mod 'active.' With this discovered, I feel a load off my shoulders and a whole new world opened up in front of me.
With that out of the way I will now try to achieve what the Chinese failed at...defeating the Japanese in 1895 with some bad ass ironclads.

You do realize we expect screenshots of this.
Which - my befuddlement on how to properly mod Civ or the actual defeat of the Japanese?

umm ... both, purely for scientific research of course.
Now that the mod is indeed active I am loving it. The Japanese, true to real life, launched a surprise attack on me before either of us reached the industrial age. I churned out the Chinese special unit (Chu no ku?) and we settled into a war of attrition as we advanced technologically. As time went by the special units evolved into gatling guns and all along the front my guns continuously mowed down his riflemen. He then sued for peace.
I am playing on a 'duel' map, so its just the Japanese and me as the Chinese, and four city states. Churning along now and advancing so I can finally get some modern (circa 1895) warships and shell Osaka :)
Also subscribed to some more mods that I will activate for the next game. Gonna download the Korean DLC now too.
Perhaps I am newly addicted. I played Civ V for like 6 hours today...

Which MOD Gus the thread gets quite confusing :)
Sorry the one mod I am usong right now contains the game within the industrial age only. Appropriately it it called the Industrial Age mod....I got it via Steam. Found a few more unit, campaign and era mods that I will use next go round.
