It's been a while since I've played Civ V but now I'm getting the itch again. I enjoy the game more modded. What do you all suggest?

Glad you asked. I don't play the game un-modded anymore. I'm showing over 500 hours playing Civ V, so God only knows how many hours I've given to Sid Meier in my lifetime!

Here is what I subscribe to. A * means I've subscribed but haven't experienced it in-game yet. I'm not listing maps, except for the Tectonic Map mod, which generates excellent maps!!!

The United Kingdom
Unlimited Barbarian XP
City States Leaders (very nice chrome)
Units-Airships and Land Ironclad *
Reforestation *
Working Workboats
Pioneers *
Really Advanced Setup
Iroquian City Names
Celtic City Names
Tectonic Map
City Limits
Das Deutsche Reich
Ethnic Units
Civil War Civs
Reveal Iron Early
Strange Religions
Extended Eras
Colored Religions
Goody Huts-No Maps
and my personal favorite:
Maps-Rotating Start Positions

Have fun!

I don't know why but I can nervous about modding the game.  Plus I have no clue where to start.  Can you get those all through STEAM workshop or are they all from different sites?

where does one find these mods, and what (in a sentence or two) do they do for you?

I'm more than happy to drop a mod or two into place and give it a whirl, but I haven't a clue how to start

They are all Steam Workshop except for the last two, which came from one of the Civ fanboy sites ( I don't remember which, but Google will help). Most of them simply add chrome, such as the city names and strange religions, but there are modified civilizations (such as Great Britain under Churchill, the Blue and the Grey or Hitler's Germany) and game adjustments (such as unlimited Barbarian xp) which tweek the gameplay to a greater or lessor extent.

There are a lot of map choices, which can be fun. As I indicated, the tectonic map generator does a great job in creating interesting continents and it's almost all I use now.

As far as running the mods, I've had no trouble....once I figured out what the hell I was doing. Basically, you upload (or subscribe via Steam) what mods you want, start the game, hit "Mods", check all the mods you want to use, hit "accept", then "single player", "set up game", and dive into it. The important thing to remember is that, once you have a game in play, do not adjust your mods further. You can occasionally get away with adding a mod (maybe), but taking one away will cause your game to not load until it is re-installed. You might occasionally run into a mod which is unstable, but I avoid that by only choosing mods with at least four-star ratings from fellow players on Steam. So far, so good.

We have been using the one from Bloublou. He has done a number of utility mods. All very good. Strange religions, and ship repair. Been a number of fun games with those. Should add these are on Steam.

I like maps so this sounds interesting.  Can you elaborate on what you mean by "interesting continents?"

Wow Dog...I should have known you were addicted to this stuff. For those who haven't modded...try this page:

Think I'll try the airships and land ironclads next. Right now I just set up a pan-Asian sort of game with slowed down era progression to stop at 1918 tech.

Poor choice of words. "More realistic continents" is more what I meant.

Cool stuff! I haven't played a decent match of Civ in a long time anymore. Great to see the modding community so busy with this.
Gives me the itch to jump in again too.
Thanks for the list of mods so far.

man, y'all have no idea what a pain in the ass it is to enable mods on the version of Civ V I have, since I didn't get it through Steam.

holy shit...

I was browsing through the CivV mod workshop on STEAM last night and was a bit overwhelmed with all the mods to chose from.  I have no idea where to even start.
