Leviathan: Warships Taking Pre-orders Ahead of Ship Date
Cross-platform Title Offers Pre-order Bonuses; Jazzy New Trailer Surfaces
NEW YORK — April 17, 2013 — Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games and a scraper of barnacles, today began accepting pre-orders for their new strategic action game, Leviathan: Warships, developed by Pieces Interactive. The game, scheduled to launch on April 30, 2013 for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms, can be purchased early for PC and Mac from digital distributors today for $9.99. All seafarers who pre-order Leviathan: Warships will be given the "Marauders" DLC Pack, which includes a batch of the game's most heavily armored (albeit slowest) ships and an extra set of flags to adorn players' fleets. To see a list of retailers where one can pre-order Leviathan: Warships, visit http://www.leviathanwarships.com/buy
In addition to this offer, Paradox has released a new gameplay trailer for Leviathan: Warships, and will also be hosting a live streaming event to demonstrate the single-player and co-op campaigns, providing a splash of insight into the game's tactical combat and the varied ships available for players to assemble, sail, and sink in cross-platform multiplayer missions and skirmishes.
Do you know what warships, smooth jazz, and a sultry bass voice have in common? This trailer:

If you need even more gameplay to satisfy your thirst for viewing warships in action, watch the live stream today at 11 a.m. PDT (6 p.m. GMT, 8 p.m. CEST). To view the broadcast, visit the official Paradox Interactive channel on TwitchTV at www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive, but only if it's the sort of thing that floats your boat.
In Leviathan: Warships, players will choose from a wide array of ship and weapon types to build a personalized fleet and fight battles in a unique blend of action and turn-based gameplay. Captains can take their time to plot out their turn, assigning moves and attacks to their ships, and then witness the chaos of battle as each fleet engages their maneuvers in simultaneous action sequences. With Leviathan: Warships, Paradox puts the sea in the cloud, allowing players to start a session from their tablet and continue their cloud-saved skirmish from their computer, challenging foes on any available device.

Great trailer - and I usually hate trailers.
Looks interesting, Jim. Thanks for posting that. I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
It doesn't look like its historical but more scifi...I wish it was historically based :(
Agree with you Gussy. But it looks like it could be fun.
I'll probably pre-order this.
Mind you, they really screwed Catalyst over by taking the name Leviathans :P
Now if they'll ever be able to raise enough money for funding the development of their digital adaptation of the tabletop miniatures game,
there will be a battle over the name "Leviathans" :D
When I can look it over at a proper PC and not a phone maybe I will get more excited. If single player is deep and there is some kind of era system to set up in single player games, I will preorder myself.

be best if you pre-ordered the game :)
Bought. Fer $10, even if you only get 2 hours play out of it, how can you go wrong..... 8)
Bawb you old so and so...looking forward to watching the trailer and such. To be honest the one thing I didn't like was the inclusion of modern weapons. When I read Leviathan I think giant 18 inch deck guns.
Ah Gussy, you have a penchant for big weapons, eh? Well, 18" is rather stupendous!
I'm hoping this will have a steampunky flavour to it, though. And if its MP, then Gus, I formally challenge you to a duel of the big 'uns.
(makes sound of a gauntlet being thrown down)

I think it's steampunky, but with health bars. So a kind of naval RTS.
If there is even a whiff of steampunk about it I will have to get it. I will thoroughly probe it's innards when I get home. A good single player bit would be nice too. Challenge accepted Bawb. CLANG
Sounds like fun, gonna pre-order. Quite an interesting list of weaponry (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?680503-Leviathan-Warships-Development-Diary-4&s=ab658dbe3b77ab5edc4ca6defc0097b3), includes stealth mines, decoy ships...and monster munchers.
I've pre-ordered and, if LB agrees, I'll do a full review for Grogheads.
A review by Bismark - what's not to like?
Some one needs to start a kickstarter for SSI's Warships, Naval Campaign Series, Action Stations, or Task Force 1942!
No, somebody needs to start a Kickstarter for NWS' future projects. Chris Dean won't because Kickstarter has a tenuous link to Amazon.com. Chris doesn't like Amazon and he's a proud man - perhaps too proud.

...there were rumblings of a TF1942 remake (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2809223&mpage=1&key=) a few years back, but nothing seems to have come of it (yet?)...
That might be the greatest game trailer that I've ever seen.
Haha hilarious trailer. I saw at the end it will be on Android as well. Looks like a good game for a tablet.
OK...just for the trailer alone I will buy this. Frickin' fantastic.

+1 The trailer is hilarious. For those who may have missed it:
Very cool! 8)
The game is intriguing and at the very least already has a great sense of humor. I wonder how moddable it is...

think of it as historically-based sci-fi .......
Since this is a Paradox title.
How many DLCs do you thik will come out for this? and in how bad a shape will it come out (bugs-wise)? :P
I buy it anyway

Me too, but I still don't have high expectations of the technical quality of the game upon release.

That is brilliant. I hadn't seen it yet.
Ship just got real!
The jazzy trailer is damn funny, but the game is gratuitous space battle on the water. Would have been cooler in my opinion if they went full steam punk for theme.
I agree. I can smell the steampunk DLC from here. And tbe ironclad DLC. And the WWI DLC.
I just smell fun.
That's not fun, I'm a tad gassy. And that's not fun either.

Me too. Comes with age.
Mine came with a turkey sandwich.
I am hoping for tons of DLC along with open code for moddability so Leviathans ends up scratching that historical naval itch.
Not sure if I like the sound of a 'naval itch' though.
Not to worry...properly modified Leviathans and a big orange horsepill gets rid of that itch.
Oh. I'll take your word for it. You sound like you know what you're talking about.
^Whatever you do, DO NOT ask me about the old style test for gonorrhea. Trust me.

Oh, tell, tell! Is this the one using mercury? :D
I'm guessing it's the one with the chemically treated glass rod that goes up the rain spout, administered by a nurse who looks like Michael Clarke Duncan.
^You are both correct and it still hurts.

neither did Bel afte shore leave in Rota.
...releases tomorrow. Kind of looking forward to it...
Ditto, I preordered it, too.
Me too...but with everything else I'm getting into playing I will be counting on all your impressions :)
It's out. Who's going to tell the rest of fence sitters what to do? ;D
I've tried only the tutorial so far.
It does seem however to not support hotseat :(
I'm reviewing it.
Got it for my iPad. Just had time to run through the tutorial so far... I like the look and feel so far... more later.
Got my key code...will install when I get home later.
Played the tutorial so far. Just gives the basics. May not really need one, but I've not seen or found a manual. I did find that the spacebar=Commit, so there may be other controls not documented. They've already put out one patch, but that seems to be mostly server-related. Anyone know if you can use the Marauder DLC in single player? Not seen a way to do so (yet).
Is it worth getting purely for Single Player ?
From the description on Steam it looks heavily weighted towards if not exclusively Multiplayer.
I don't have it in front of me but didn't the description include mention of a SP campaign?
There is an ability to play offline. I downloaded the game and am working through the tutorials now.
Their servers were getting pounded earlier so they've added two more.
I'm also experiencing some network issues, so I'm not able to determine whether it's them or me.
The game reminds me a bit of Dystopian Wars. There are hits, misses, critical hits. Systems get taken out. It's not quite as complex as DW but I see the outline of what looks to be an interesting and light naval skirmish game.
There is indeed at least one campaign set which can be played offline. (Although I haven't taken Steam offline to play it completely offline, just "offline" ingame. I'm downloading other stuff.)
I like it. Moving the ship in a way to confuse enemy gunners while maximizing firepower per 10 seconds without running into things... very nice. The ships rotate centrally when at rest, but appear to have some rudder effects under speed -- considering that they have lasers, I'll grant that they may be able to rotate at rest. I suppose theoretically the rotate-at-rest command could be deactivated or forbidden for multiplayer matches...?
Sort of reminds me of what a multiplayer version of MechCommander might have been (or could still be) if the turns resolved simultaneously like Combat Mission.
(The MechComs might have had multiplayer components, but I wasn't in a position to ever play them that way so if they did I've forgotten.)
Downloading it now. Hopefully get to try it out tomorrow.
I poked around for a bit and was befuddled as what I should do...I suppose I should try the tutorials...
The controls are fairly straightforward once explained, but I can see how not playing the tutorial might lead to confusion.
I've only played a very brief session on it, but I like it. It's straightforward, drag the nav to plot your course, click on each weapon system and see the range, and drag to target if you want specific fire, or leave it on auto-fire. Manoeuvre into position, use defensive shields whilst bringing your available guns to bear on the enemy. The four tech I've seen in the tutorial are shields, mines, cloaks and radar (spotting enemy outside of visual range).
Imagine if the Steam and Iron engine had a more historical lick of paint from this UI - we'd be in WWI naval action heaven!
I managed to get the first mission in the solo campaign done last night. You only get one ship to take out 6 or 7 enemy. Took me 4 tries. Mostly because I was not patient enough.
No run and run this.
You need to draw out each enemy and then maneuver so his shots miss and you keep your broadside to his bow or stern.
So far it's fun. Should be a blast when they get MP working with the iPad version.
Spelk what you describe above is exactly the droid I'm looking for. Maybe with mods this can be transformed into something more historical.

No run and run this.
You need to draw out each enemy and then maneuver so his shots miss and you keep your broadside to his bow or stern.
I found the first mission was more effective when I maneuvered to roll the various turrets in sequence toward the targets I wanted. That way while my broadside was reloading, my tailguns were shooting and my other broadsides were finishing out the round getting off a shot. Made it harder for them to hit me that way, too, especially if I was moving while turning. (Occasionally I'd stop moving when all my guns were in decent range and just jet-rotate or however the game fluff would explain that. ;) )
I should explain that the ship on the first mission starts with eight guns, each with limited firing arcs, two on each side front back left and right. Not like a line of main turrets with >180 degrees: a broadside alignment accomplishes nothing (except possibly keeping the two strongest mounts out of action), and the raiders and speedboats of this mission all have more and/or stronger guns facing forward. So capping their T presents them with the most targets for their greatest concentration of firepower at possibly less advantage to your firepower. (I'd have to check the calcs as to which ones among the two initial kinds have the best accurate damage rates.)
There is an oblique broadside angle that opens up three mounts, narrowly, for the opening cruiser, but it's hard to get and even harder to maintain, and I found that rotating my ship various ways pumped four to five or even six mounts per round at my target. Take advantage of the opportunity of turn-based pausing to assign enemy turrets as targets, and the ratio of my damage to their damage increases significantly very quickly. Who cares if they aren't sunk yet, so long as my attack ratio compared to theirs keeps going up? -- the AI (so far) doesn't try to unmask other batteries when the first ones are damaged.
(Or maybe I sink the enemies too fast for them to bring their undamaged guns to bear. I can't quite tell, but I don't think I saw the light raiding cruisers try to do more than basic maneuvers, not tactical assault maneuvers. The speedboats move around the map quickly enough to unmask other turrets anyway; so that could be accidental.)
All good points Jason. Thanks. 8)
I'm basically a land lubber so my sailing tactics are a bit off. :P

These naval skirmish games require thinking a couple of moves ahead. It can be an adjustment from ground tactics to naval tactics. Same idea, only different.

I can't remember the last time I played a naval game so this will take some getting use to. So far I suck at it but it is fun on the PC and I can see it being fun on a tablet as well.
What's really cool is it's compatible cross-platform. So we can play on tablets, phones, and PCs. This is an excellent design decision.
^Maybe once they get their server issues cleared up. Seems oddly reminiscent of the recent SimCity fiasco, but not quite as bad.
p.s. I'm in no rush to see her go, but shouldn't "Redshirt" Mona have "passed" by now? :P

Android too! Woo Whoo!
Almost lost last night's 2nd campaign mission, defending some crystal-energy extraction mines offshore. Swarmed by a constant stream of small to medium gunships before the Big Daddy came crawling from a different direction. Managed to kill it finally, thus ending the mission, not much more than 10 seconds before losing one of the rigs.
My biggest mistake was the designers deciding the game shouldn't ship with instructions anywhere. ;) Specifically, the end of the 1st mission told me I now had access to the docks for force composition twiddling, but gave me ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how or when this screen would pop up. Consequently, when the mission started I had to use the two crappy small cruisers (NOT EVEN A REAR TURRET, REALLY!?!?) and a nearly useless minelayer which the game defaults to. I'm kind of shocked I managed to eke out a win after all.
Since the 3rd mission was clearly going to continue without taking me to a composition screen, I fiddled around for a minute until I found it myself. Will be going into the next mission rather more prepared this time I hope.
Finally beat the first mission, I am really terrible at this game. Tried the second mission out and promptly sunk one of my ships with my own mines while ramming two others into each other. :o Apparently I wasn't meant to command ships in battle.
Haha well there are no command tents on ships anyway.

haha ;D
Created new designs last night and played mission 3. It seems like the heavy shore batteries are completely invulnerable...?? Which is kind-of not a problem, since the only mission goal (aside from go-here) is to destroy the superbattleship, but I wasted some time shooting at the gun batteries instead of the Goliath.
Barely finished the mission alive; will need to rethink my design theory; if the mission had given a clearer idea how large the supership was (VERY VERY LARGE!) I would have brought some dedicated minelayers (with minelayers in sane positions.)
So? What's the verdict? Is it any good?
I haven't played it for the past couple of days, concentrating on trying to finish up the Stronghold 1 campaign; but I think it's a winner so far. Will post more thoughts when I get around to continuing the campaign.
