This is interesting....from Rock/Paper/Shotgun site. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/07/30/for-the-glory-eu-iv-contains-ck-ii-save-game-converter/#more-162485
Oh boy! Like I don't already spend too much time on my PC..... :P
Umm so I've never had much of a desire to play EUIV but being able to continue my dynasty beyond one game into another just seems awesome! I wonder what the conversion will look like. Will it pick up the "next year" or will there be some time elapsing and events happening before you come back and just play guys with the same names?
There's supposed to be a video of how it works on Paradox's Twitch channel, but I couldn't get it to work: http://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

'Cause it hasn't happened yet... ;) Supposed to start at 20:00 CET today.
LOL
Well....that explains a few things.

It should probably be noted that EUIV is a more traditional strategy game, where you control a nation-state rather then as the head of a dynasty. I imagine that what ever each dynasty will have to be translated into a nation in EUIV.
I wonder if you have to use a game that is right at the end of CK2 in order for this to work. I still have all my Kingdom of Italy save games but am still 200-150 years short of the end of the game.It would seem that it doesn't matter the date in your CK2 game that you convert. Any date will get exported to 1440 in EUIV, and all of the states will get converted to EUIV. Bring on the Italian conquest of the Renaissance.
Will the conversion utility be available only to those who preorder or will it eventually be released 'into the wild' so to speak? It's about the only thing tempting me to preorder right now.
I would think the conversion feature would come with all versions of the game.
These days, what with all the DLC milking, who knows for sure? One thing that marketing scheme promotes is the, "we'll just release the game earlier and charge for the extra features we had originally planned in post-release DLC."
A dutch games site mentions that the converter is a pre-order bonus only.
This is pretty awesome. If you grow attached to your version of the world in CK2 you can go at it even further in EU 4. Neat idea!

After reading the Paradox developer diary, it sounds like it is free for pre-orders, everyone else will have to pay $9.99 for it.
I like how it essentially makes a mod for EUIV out of your CK2 save. So in theory all the minor independent counts/dukes will get converted. From listening to the twitch stream yesterday at work, it sounds like the conversion scripts can be edited. Converted games also work in MP games.

The latest Paradox newsletter says that the conversion program is a freebie available only if you pre-order.

Pfah! F them.
They'll turn around and sell it for a few bucks later on. ::)
IIRC they said during the stream that it was free for pre-orders and would be paid DLC for everyone else. They got a question that asked them about preorder DLC not being available to people who didn't preorder and they said preorder DLC would never not be available later as a separate paid DLC.
I wonder what the preorder deadline is going to be. Anyone know?
If their page ad is correct (look below the scrolls), as long as you order before the games release date, your entitled to the pre-order bonus...

All these pre-orders holding back release day features is starting to piss me off.
I hope that Paradox has learned from it's CK2 release on how to put their new in-house titles through long beta testing. But when all these extras are dangled beforehand, it makes me a bit wary of how many issues will be left at release.
Not to mention.. how much they'll charge extra for them later on, which essentially makes them Day-0 DLC.

By all the press accounts, including reports from the massive LAN event paradox had a few months ago, EUIV is shaping up really well. Think it was Rob Zacney from Three Moves Ahead who said that the old Paradox would have released it 6-8 months ago.

Probably going to be par for the course for Paradox going forward. I don't see anything they have done that would give's me the impression they are holding back features for DLC. One could argue republics, muslim nations, and the vikings should have been in CK2 from the beginning. But given all the normal feudal factions that were available and the variety of game play I really don't mind it. Units models, music packs, etc could hardly be called holding back features.

I wouldn't consider music packs Day-0 DLC, since there's not really any difference in the game other than background music. But holding back graphics that were made prior to release day is rather iffy. Certainly holding back the importer, a game feature, could be considered day-0 DLC.
To be fair, TW Rome 2 is also doing this by holding back their Greek Factions for pre-orderers.
I've seen some such pre-order bonuses held back for a time, then released for free in an update a month or two later. That's pretty reasonable. But this kind of release day DLC is a slippery slope. I mean.. the game will be what..$40 or $50 and they want to charge for an extra feature right out of the gate?
I dunno.. does this not sound like it could lead to worse examples in the future? Maybe they
will be adding the importer in a free update later on, but that's not the impression I get.
Unless you play zoomed in CK2/EU4, then units sprite are not a huge deal.
I do think SEGA/CA making the Greeks (and eventually most of the eastern factions) as DLC is pushing it a little far. That only gives us 9 factions at the start. IIRC Rome 1 had something like 15-20. I think that you get more for your money with the paradox model of games and DLC.
Agreed.
I just caved and preordered EU 4. I am reading fairly good previews from sources I trust, so I am comfortable preordering this time.
:)
stop talking about this game....I have been so good not to pre-order so far, but starting to crack......I just fear it will turn out the same as when I have played past versions. I think I should really love it, but then get completely lost in it.....this one seems to talk a good game about possibly being a little more friendly......what to do:(

An alternate view.....hold out. With the holiday sales only 4 months away you'll get it for half the cost, patched and with dlc's. Just saying....

That is the rationale way at looking at things....but that is not the Reaper's way.....too many impulses:)
Good document that explains differences between EU 3 and EU4......44 pages long!

This is my plan although if there's a decent sale before then, I may buckle.
Manual now released.

Yeah. I've got about eight dollars worth right now.. figured it'll probably go towards
The Old Gods DLC when it goes on sale. I'd actually buy that one earlier if I planned on playing CK2 soon but my 'To Play' list is already stacked up with stuff I've not even installed yet.
Due to the backlog, I'm waffling about purchasing
EU4 and
Space Hulk this month.
Dominions 4 may still be an insta-buy, however. Having already pre-ordered
TW Rome 2, I'm thinking the month or two after probably won't see the first two in my inventory, either. It's not often I can say "no" to such games.
