With bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace," nearly 200 veterans from Mississippi and Iowa swept past barricades and security guards at the World War II Memorial in Washington in order to keep a commitment to visit the site, which was closed today due to the partial government shutdown. The veterans, in their 80s and 90s, were accompanied by Rep. Steven Palazzo, R-Miss., a former Marine who earlier vowed not to let the National Park Police keep them from a planned visit to the open-air monument.

It's an open-air freaking memorial. What are the police protecting? Potential vandalism? My money's on the vets, even if they are in their 80s.

No kidding. It probably costs more to put up the barricades around the monuments to declare them closed than to let people come and go and post one guard for security. ::)

Just out of curiousity, did some research on the closing of national monuments during government shutdowns.
It looks like the 1990 shutdown was the first time I can find, that the monuments were shuttered and made off limits. Of course, the World War II memorial hadn't been built, but there were the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Statue of Liberty, Iwa Jima Memorial and all.
Now, the interesting thing was, that most people accepted it as part of the cost of a government shutdown. If you stop the government from functioning, then since the National Park Service is part of the government, it must happen. As the time went on, people did get furious over the closings, but it seems to have taken some time.
Also, this shutdown was under the first President Bush. So it certainly seems like a bipartisan activity if both Republican administrations and Democratic Administrations shuttered the monuments.
My question would be that since President Bush shuttered the monuments first, why is there so much yelling about an agenda for closing them down now? Did Bush have an agenda?
Arizona offered to pay for keeping the Grand Canyon open and was rejected by the Administration. Seriously, if I was Gov. Brewer, I would consider ordering the DPS to go man the gates and reopen the park. I mean, what are the Feds gonna do, shoot at State Troopers?
And funny how the Mall was open for a big protest yesterday in favor of granting citizenship to illegals (not just amnesty, but citizenship). Especially since the WWII memorial is also located on the Mall.

Brant's correct. However, the 1990 shutdown was three days over a three day weekend, thus people weren't home watching the news.
