Last year I went for several months on a schedule of finishing at least five games (previously unfinished) before buying a new one. (I think. My memory's kind of fuzzy on that. Let's just pretend I managed to do that and move on...)
Then I succumbed to Steam sales and Gamersgate and GoG and thanks a lot, Grogheads. :P
This year I'm not really setting a goal of finish-to-buy because I bought so many games last year I think even that would be irresponsible of me, so I'm going to try to go as long as possible without buying a new game at all. (Rome 2 and its current DLC was my last purchase for last year during the Steam sale.)
Forthwith, I am resurrecting the monthly GAME FINISH thread series from last year (a little early since I usually posted it on the first Monday of the month.) Join me in finishing games!
Recently I've finished:
Dawn of War 2: Retribution (also the original DoW1 campaign, and close to finishing Winter Assault again)
um....
yeah, that's pretty much it for the past month or so. Before then I only finished a couple of games in November, primarily Arkham Origins.
Annnd finished DoW1:WA tonight. It's been, gosh how many years since I played itNOIREFUSETOFEELOLLLLLDDD!!!
Good luck in your endeavor, Jason. I've just come to the conclusion that I will likely never finish most of the games I purchase. The last one that I remember finishing is Forge of Freedom a few years ago. For me to finish a game, it really has to grab me....and hold me.
Sadly, I'm too interested in supporting wargame developers that I tend to buy nearly anything that certain development shops produce. So, I keep buying and buying with the noble intention of playing them all. My current backlog of about three years will attest to my success at living up to that intention. ;D
I'm down with this thread.....no new games until next fall sale......I swear. I'm 48 hours into DAO and on the home stretch for the main story line and have completed about a dozen side quests. No idea what i will play next...yet....i did start Batman Arkham Asylum so might go there next.
I didn't quite feel like migrating back over to something else yet, so I restarted another DOW Dark Crusade campaign: I've never beaten it with the Space Marines, and since it fits into the overarching Blood Ravens story of the series (and they canonically win on Kronos) I figured I might as well scratch that itch a little more before shifting over to (probably) XCOM:EW. Then I may finish my Soulstorm campaign (perhaps -- I can't remember why I stopped it last year) with the Imperial Guard since they won; and then I'll have caught back up again to the DoW2 storyline (already finished).
Slick, I know what you mean about supporting wargame devs; I've bought a lot of games I may never play, simply because I wanted to reward them for making what looked like a good effort on something I could appreciate! (But I might get around to playing more this year, since technically they're still "new" games I've already bought. :D )
As for "finishing", I think I forgot to mention in the OP that I count a game finished if I've played it 20 or 25 hours and just don't care to play it anymore, even if I haven't completed the campaign or whatever. I might come back to it later, or maybe not, but I consider it finished: I've gotten my worth out of it.
(And games I don't care enough to play anymore after several hours at all, I also consider finished in a different way. ;) But for my stricter purposes last year I didn't "count" them toward the total before buying a new game.)
Budd, ooooh, I could easily play all three Arkham games two or three times a year (though I try to hold it down to once a year. ;D ) About 10 hours each, minus the Riddler sidequests which aren't really worth it storywise except in Arkham City anyway. Very doable, and AA has a much more linear (and so propulsive) storyline than the other two, so once you're good with the controls it should keep your momentum up.
Nothing new (or even old) finished this past week, but I spent it playing through most of a campaign of XCOM:EW. I think "most-of", it's hard to tell. I have the key for the alien base assault but I've been leveling up four mechs with a pair of snipers before going in; and for all I know this is only the first alien base assault mission. I've stayed pretty spoiler free on how the game develops, despite the base game being out for a little more than a year. (Which I picked up, like this one, from a relative as a Christmas present, and never finished.)
I accidentally skipped the mission in Newfoundland where a coastal town's population had vanished, but I don't seem to have suffered anything for missing it. I'm curious about whether this was a winky-nod to Terror From the Deep, though...
Anyone actually finish a game last week? (Haven't bought anything new since Rome2 around NYears. Baby steps, baby steps... :D)
not finished yet, but 63 hours into DAO and on the home stretch of the main quest with about 3 dozen side quest complete. I have one more people's to get on board to fight the blight..... just got finished putting a king on the dwarf throne, now i got to get the elves on board. I understand they changed the game type for DAO2..... what the f**k for, I'm really liking the battle system in this game and was looking forward to looking into DAO2..not anymore if it went to FP perspective. I tried to like the strictly turned based battle system of other games but it just doesn't do it for me. Any other fantasy rpg party based third person perspective games with pausable real time battles out there? Guess it would have been simpler just to say any games out with DAO's system ;D
I finished a game of Conquest of Elasyium on a large map.
I am about to finish a Panzer Corps Barbarossa campaign and I have finished several Unity of Command scenarios.
Amateurs.
I just finished an ARMA3 scenario (SP), and for the first time went almost five minutes without being shot, blown up, or otherwise seagulled. Beat that!
There's a reason why MC Hammer doesn't sue me for my harem pants.
Just finished the Edelweiss scenario in Unity of Command, but lost...was short just one objective :/ What an addictive game. Any game that can make supply of an army tense and fun is good in my book.
So I managed a minor victory in CMBN's German Kampgruppe Engel Campaign-- Battle 3. Doesn't sound like much but for me it's a real accomplishment. This battle's as hard as my ex-wife's Pot Roast! Your weak kampgruppe, 2 Platoons, 4 tanks, a 75mm AT gun, 2 Half-tracks and a handful of engineers, get a King Tiger tank as reinforcement. The catch is it's 300 meters in front of your start point and un-manned. You have to escort the crew to it and then get it out of there with a avalanche of Americans coming down on you-- a Battalion of infantry(500+) a company of tanks, some with 76mm and 105mm guns, and a ton of arty. The Germans have 2 81mm mortars. Then it gets better. You have to keep the Americans out of 3 large victory zones for the entire 45min. scenario as well as exiting all of your forces off the map before the end of the battle. Any Germans left on map at the end count as victory points for the Americans. I literally got my last unit off with 8 seconds left in the battle. Along the way, we inflicted 277 casualties on the Amis, including 170 KIA and took-out 24 tanks and 2 AC's. Not too shabby for 11 KIA and 11 wounded on our part with the AT gun, a Mk.2 panzer, a HT, and 2 trucks lost. Now that we've spanked the Americans good and proper, it's the Canuks turn next. 8)

On an unfinished note: I went back to ARMAIII because it got something new in the development area (unfinished!). I went back into a scenario that I had made (unfinished!) switched sides (why?) added some armor. I arrived and was lost somewhere on the big island. A friendly vehicle ran over somebody behind me and I ran toward the enemy to try to stay safe. Over in enemy land, something huge exploded and an immense pillar of black smoke came into view. (I'm not sure what that was -- quite possibly a tank falling into a house due to unfinished deployments in the scenario design). My combat team was more lost than me and kept demanding to know where I was so I changed roles with a recon man and took off into enemy territory. Eventually there was a pretty big battle -- though not quite big enough since I was killed trying to find it. I switched sides and was blown up. I switched sides again and drove a truck with a machine gun around town until a tank hit me with machine gun fire. I took the Cheeta (dual 35mm AA) and was busy leveling the town (enemy AT missiles were surprisingly helpful and collapsed whole buildings around me. Eventually the tank got me. I switched to the tank and drove around. Everybody was dead. I got out and found a few of my earlier selves shot to bits. There was no feeling of closure or finish. I think the scenario needs work.
82 hours later....DAO... finished...well i didn't do all the side quests but quite a few. Quality game, i can see myself going for another play through in the future. I've started alot of fantasy RPG's in the past, i think this and Oblivion are the only ones i would consider finished.

Hmmmmm....whats next? I think something shorter :)
I got so damned close to finishing DAO but I couldn't beat one of final battles, afte the elections/usurpations IIRC.
"something shorter" == Skyrim? ;D
I still haven't finished bulking up enough to take on the (first?) alien base in XCOM:EW, but I'm already pondering what I want to finish next. I've been meaning to do a huge comparison run-thru of several WW1 games, but I may try something lighter like another one of the PuzzleX fantasy/sci-fi games, only three of which I've played so far (PQ1, PChron, PKingdoms -- none of which campaigns I've finished so they still have meat on them to chew.)

That's exactly what happened to me....got all the way through to the final battles and couldn't beat it, it was very frustrating because I really liked the game. Same thing happened with DOA2.

I dunno, man. A tank falling into a house sounds pretty effin awesome.
Other than that, sounds frighteningly similar to many of my ARMA experiences. Particularly the part where no one -- including me -- knows wtf I am.

I had the same problem with the final battle in Baldur's Gate I.
I found DAO to be a little too hard until I did a party with two mages (NPC and the lead) and then found it a little too easy.
So far this month I've managed to finish 2 games.
I finished the single player campaign in COD: Ghosts. I'm a little embarrassed to say that the ending caught me by surprise. Good game all around though in my opinion.
Then I completed the main story in Red Dead Redemption. The ending absolutely broke my heart. It affected me so much that now all I want to do in the post game free roam section is to kill every living thing in site for revenge! Great story and a great console game.
I wish I could remember exactly which battle it was in DAO but it was a few years ago...I am tempted to play through again as I really enjoyed it...probably my second favorite recent RPG next to Skyrim.

You could try the alternate ending instead where he lives happily ever after with his family except for the zombie apocalypse.
I finished both of those years ago but I've been toying with running through the main campaign again for no real reason. My nieces love horses and trains so I have a 'safe' game save set up on RDR where I can leave the house just at sunrise, call the horse, and let the girls ride around the scenery looking for the various trains. (I say 'safe' because there are coyotes meandering around at the beginning, and they don't dare stop anywhere for fear of getting into a gunfight or a bearfight, and their horse hasn't been brutally murdered by a cougar from behind yet, but you know what I mean. :) )

You know you can switch to easy at any point in the game. I didn't for the final battle, but their were 2 earlier battles i did it for. for some reason i couldn't get by the early doppleganger battle, must of tried a dozen times before frustration set in. Watched some lets play and read comments and thats how i learned you could adjust the difficulty in game. the other battle was the elf boss battle in the werewolf lair, just not into replaying battles over and over again anymore messes with the continuity of the game. alot of the late battles against the blight i just would lure them into traps and pick them off with my archers and go in for mop up. I didn't realize until halfway through the game that you could put your group members on hold ... DUH....that made things better. The final battle took me 3 tries, the key was keeping my healer alive, which they would seem to target and also make your ballista shots count.
I also think i decided on my next game....think i'm going with call of juarez..gunslinger.... a little western action.
I hear you Jason. And yes those cougars can sneak up on you real quick like and kill you just as quick. The black and grizzly bears are no joke either.
I started the Undead Nightmare expansion and have progressed half way through the story. At first it's pretty tough but once you get an acceptable ammunition supply the game starts to get a little easier.
Yeah IIRC I tried even on easy many many times and it still kicked my arse.

Chaotic, but primitive. I guess I should see what the workshop scenarios are like.
Out of curiosity I took 4 well-promoted MECs and two well-promoted snipers to the first (?) alien base in XCOM:EU, and learned I was about one big encounter shy of being able to beat the mission. Oddly, the sectopod clustermunition attack (which I promptly named something else to do with clusters ;) ), which it had never shown any evidence of in prior encounters with that type in the mission, didn't even scratch my two snipers; but they had previously shown themselves almost ineffective against sectos, and several other aliens were bearing down on me in what I inferred (perhaps wrongly) was the last large room area of the base; and for all I knew there would be a final boss (I've tried to avoid spoilers); and for all I knew this wasn't even the final battle (especially since the aliens hadn't launched a strike on my base yet, nor tried to shoot down my satellites, which seems like something that ought to kick in before game-end)...
...so I reloaded premission. {inhaaaale!}
But now I'll have to grind through several more whole months of missions (if the prior month or two were any indication) before I level up enough, and scrape up enough meld, to maximize my mechs.
Thus, I feel likely to move on from XCOM soon (again) and get into something else (possibly again). Taking another stab at learning Blood Bowl Legendary Edition for example.
At least I've held to my resolution so far and not bought any PC or console games this year!
...except for the iPhone version of Carcassone for my niece. Which doesn't count, because "for my niece".
...and except for the iPhone version of Lords of Waterdeep for research into a potential marketing opportunity. Which doesn't count because "business sort of".
...and except for about $800 (surely more like) $500 of various board and card games which my nieces may or may not learn to play this year or sometime in the next five years perhaps.
...
.........
BUT MY RESOLUTION REMAINS FIXED!!!
(Did you own PuzzleQuest2 or PQ:Galactrix at the start of the year?)(No... {sigh})
Update this Monday -- there is no update. :P
I didn't start a new game in my collection, and piddled around with some old ones I hadn't strictly finished yet. Most notably, I took another shot at beating the next-to-last mission in the "Sin of Damnation" (main) campaign for the Space Hulk PC reboot this weekend. I have come to the realization that what I thought was merely a bug last time (the large tanky Genestealer cannot be shot or otherwise hit with ranged fire), is actually intentional by the mission designers to force players to hit it in melee with one of the two characters (the librarian and the officer) who cannot spend a turn picking up its goo afterward.
I suspect if I did a little more research on the net (such as at gamefaqs.com) I'd find this confirmed (and anyone who reads this who knows for sure is welcome to do so, hint hint ;) ); but the theory occurred to me when I noticed the dice rolls again demonstrating that my sergeant ( Lorenzo, the guy with the sword and cape) was repeatedly shooting the thing while it lumbered up the hallway and scoring legitimate hits of 5 or better on the dice rolls -- but unlike when using fire (which I tried first) the action log wasn't showing the creature to be immune. Meh, I thought, yeah there it is, there's the bug: how is it after so many patches this has not been fixed?!?
Then I thought, okay, what if that's intentional then? Then I thought, why? Well, to make the mission harder of course; and because this creature ought to be harder to kill but this game doesn't really have anything like hit points. But it isn't just harder to kill, it's invulnerable to bolter fire! But it isn't technically "invulnerable" like to a heavy flamer. So what am I supposed to kill it with? Something with better to-hit rolls than bolter fire; the only thing nearby was the power sword sergeant who had been repeatedly scoring legal hits with the bolter.
So on my next turn, I walk up and whack it with the sword. Blap, it drops over dead, instant kill, I'm not even sure there was a dice roll per se! Fine, great, I'll just spend one more action point to walk on top of it and then drop into oversight to shoot anything else coming up the hallway -- and then I remembered the guy with the sword couldn't pick up the goo. But why?!?
I guess in-story the explanation would be that he doesn't have an open fits like the claw guy or anyone with a power glove; but that doesn't stop him or the librarian from throwing down a portable force-field (if they have the APs to do that action). Then it occurred to me: if they're two of the only three marines on the mission with a real chance at fighting this thing hand to hand, it would be super-easy to do what I was planning and park myself on the goo with one more move. It would be more "tactical" (in a trivially more complicated way) to have to shuffle people around to get a guy with a fist (or maybe the claws), who didn't have as much chance to win in hand-to-hand, to stand there instead.
I feel like this is the answer to my puzzlement. It feels awfully gamey if so, but it does explain all the weird details of the mission. I'll be trying again tonight, with at least the confirmation that I need to send someone to whack it with a heavy melee weapon pronto (maybe the claw guy so he can pick up the residue faster.)
I am about 3 battles always from finally finishing a distant worlds game as the victor. I've finished many as the loser but as we speak, 1st fleet, 2nd fleet. 1st assault (nuclear bombardment), 1st MEU and 2nd MEU are engaged in the enemies main system . While the fleets blast the enemy fleets and take out the orbitals, the marines land and take the planets. There are three planets. The main enemy home works is stocked full of troops so the 6 nuclear cruisers will simply nuke the crap out of it until it's dead. With that done, the only raise even close to me will be done and 6 months later, I hit the finish line. Yeah!
Ooooooo... :o
DW is one of those games I own that I'd like to play this year perhaps AND FINALLY GET SOME RETURN FOR MY INVESTMENT IN IT!! (Not that I resent buying it and its various expansion, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them. It's just, y'know, potential fun so far. :) )
My theory about the killbeast or bloodlard or whatever it is, turned out to be lamentably false on all points.
1.) A regular old heavy bolter can in fact kill it. So can an assault cannon, btw. Apparently I have to roll double sixes or something, because I know I was rolling fives and sixes before then, whereas the winning hit both times involved double sixes (a little easier to roll with the three dice of an assault cannon). This is annoying.
2.) Hand to hand does not automatically kill it: it managed to easily smat all three of my melee marines at one point or another tonight.
3.) The claw guy does not pick up anything from it after all.
4.) No one does.
5.)
