Below is the "leaked" feature list...pretty awesome if this turns out accurate.
Beyond the Sideline Football Features
•A realistic modern day American football experience with all current rules and regulations.
•All 32 real American football teams with their real players and current rosters.
•A 2D engine that represents all the action on the field, with the ability to call plays and watch them unfold, complete with the roar of the crowd and other sound effects.
•FaceGen support allows realistic images of all players.
•You dictate the action on the field: Set depth charts and develop strategies around your preferred style of play.
•A complete box score for every game played in the league during its history, so you can always look back on thrilling victories and agonizing defeats.
•The ability to sim decades into the future and watch teams' fortunes rise and fall as dynasties emerge, crumble, and eventually renew themselves.
•You call the shots from the front office: Participate in the draft for your team every spring; trade players; and negotiate contracts with draft picks and free agents.
•All of the (non-playable) Division I colleges as well as many more, with real players, so you can draft the next crop of superstars every year.
•A living, breathing world full of news articles from around the league and a message system that lets you field offers from other GMs and hear what your players have to say.
•A realistic sim engine whose creation was informed by 15 years of experience developing OOTP's sim engine
•Complete histories, including stats, transactions, injuries, and contracts, for all players who have participated in a training camp during the past decade.
•Nearly 50 tracked stats, allowing you to go beyond the usual numbers and dig deep into players' performance.
•Each player features a Health Scan that lets you quickly assess their current situation by showing you which areas of their body are hurt, which areas are okay, and which ones are worn.
•A clear, clean interface that lets you easily find the information you need.
•Customization options, including the ability to change team names, the number of teams, the league structure, the league's country, and a variety of settings.

I hope they announce tomorrow that early access is available:) I would jump in immediately! If I have to wait a year, I am going to go nuts:)
that looks great if they can pull it off
Go Broncos!
Awesome!
My only fear is that it rolls out like Franchise Hockey Manager. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited but I'm going to taper my expectations until about a month after it gets released.
Btw, I haven't given up hope on FHM. I think it will eventually be very good.
Oh hell damn yes!
Excellent news, if this is true.
Official announcement so it is true.....but a ways off for release. Says beta in a year and release sometime 2015. Still good news but will be hard to wait.

Awesome new. So the question is will Gridiron Solitaire get me through to 2015? If no what will?
Dang -- I was really hoping their next project would center on basketball :'(
(yeah, wet blanket, I know)
Absolutely cannot wait for this bad boy.

You didn't feel like wrestling with FOF7?
Hardest part will be waiting a year or so before release....I really hope they do this game justice.

I wonder the impact on Front Office Football.......I really think FOF missed a golden opportunity all these years. The game was first released in 1998 and pretty much was/is the only American Football career sim on the market worth playing. Although the product has a fairly solid engine, just seems after 16 years a big missed opportunity really evolving the product. He had a captive audience and really no competition (maybe that was the downfall). Over these years, he should have put so many features/graphics into the game where it would have prevented any newcomer from entering the market since it would have had a huge advantage. But sadly that did not happen and has left the door wide open for OOTP to blow past FOF and bury them for good. I am sure it will take OOTP a few versions to catch up in some areas, but they will be a bulldog and evolve the new product far more than FOF ever did.
It's a shame since FOF could have really cornered the market but the developer really stuck to the safe stuff and was always resistant to change (i.e. graphics, gameplay, making things easier, etc.).
I just bought Gridiron Solitaire. It's very frustrating to come up bust more than anything. Played two games, scored exactly one TD in both games, missed a field goal, and thoroughly had my ass kicked each time the CPU took offense. I'd almost never have cards to match anything so I'd have to rely on Big Plays, which is pretty messy. :(
I'll keep trying, but until this "real" football game comes along, I don't see any other way to get a fix other than a board game.

Gridiron certainly is not a replacement for career football sims, although still light fun. Do you play Front Office Football? That is likely the best your going to get before this game comes out.
I've tried FOF, but I never got into it. I did try the demo of this latest version and it failed to impress me.

Sometimes, you just have to accept a lack of matches and punt. You aren't going to get traction every single possession, and hammering the Big Play button just makes things worse thanks to turnovers. On D, if the opposition scores on a few possessions, it isn't the end of the world. You get the ball back and get the chance to get some points for you.
And some games, the cards just aren't going to come up for you. Move on to the next game. ;D

I was a HUGE fan of the FOFTCY (The College Years) but I could never get into the Pro version. I bought the FOF7 but again it didn't really grip me as I had hoped. I haven't applied all the new content yet, maybe that'll help, but there's just something missing in the Pro version and I can't put my finger on it.
Finally played through two full games (admittedly the other two I tried to play I had to give up because of things to do around the house) of Gridiron Solitaire. I won one and lost one.
I was thinking that this game DOES cheat, because in my first game (which I lost), I missed 2 of 3 field goals and the computer gave itself not one, not two, but three 'Big Gains.' Despite that I only lost by a touchdown, so I wasn't totally pissed. (I've not had one Big Gain yet, unfortunately.)
The second game I won rather handily, 35-17.
Thing is, the things that were initially pissing me off, I realized is what makes this game rather brilliant. Running is safer than passing, usually. My team (San Antonio) leads the league in rushing after two games - actually we have more than twice the yardage as the next-highest-ranked team in the rushing category. Passing? I'm dead last. And most of my dead-last yards came from my last drive of the second game, when I was already up by two TDs with the clock running out in the fourth quarter and had little to lose, so I had a pass go for 60+ yards (not a Big Gain, just a lot of good card draws thankfully).
But that's okay. I know I read somewhere that the dev said, very specifically, that the computer is not programmed to 'cheat.' Could have fooled me in that first game, and I imagine there are times in some of your games where it feels just like that. But, I'm having fun with this once I loosened up a little. ;)
What's funny is tomorrow I'm probably going to spend playing Gridiron Solitaire and finish a few other things, and pretty much ignore the Super Bowl until kickoff. I'd rather play a football game than watch that game tomorrow, actually.
I found running far easier than passing as well.....went 15-1 in my first season and won the championship...however, it was on rookie level. What level you playing on? According to devs, we really should be playing on a higher level to be truly tested. I just got burnt out after playing an entire weekend of it so just taking a break before I try again:)

You know, I'm not sure what level...I never changed anything, so whatever the default is. I imagine that's Rookie.
I could see it being easy to get burned out on this. Two games was enough for me, but I'll go back to it. Ten bucks is pretty high for me so I want to be sure I get some replayability. ;D

Yep, the default is rookie....seems like the dev is considering some minor design changes so we'll see how this game evolves. Don't regret the $10 I spent, something to play when killing time. I do wish they had a quick play option so when I wanted to play I wouldn't have to go into the season...maybe something for the future.
Yeah, quick play would be fun, get some random teams and random stats generated and go for it.
I saw the "Sim Game" option and thought, how lazy is that? This is a light football game, and you're going to sim it? LOL...

Agreed, not sure the purpose of that in the scheme of things....
There are videos now of the concept game leading up to the announcement of Beyond the Sideline Football. Pretty neat if you want to check it out .. http://gmgames.org/2014/02/16/sneak-peek-videos-future-beyond-sideline-bts-football/ (http://gmgames.org/2014/02/16/sneak-peek-videos-future-beyond-sideline-bts-football/)
You know, that playout is the way I remember an old Commodore 64 or Amiga ST game being displayed, but in black and white. Just wee dots moving around
Remember Accolade's
4th and Inches?
Yep, 4th and inches was one of the first football games that I played, not on an Atari:)
XOR Football
Madden Football
Super Bowl Sunday
4th and Inches
Microleague Football
Front Page Football
Pro League Football (also had a college version)
Joe Montana Football
Tom Laundry Football
etc....

No kidding. That was back around when I worked at Babbage's, then Electronics Boutique (1988-1990).
There were a couple of older football titles I recall - I don't know if you mentioned one of them, but one I do recall had you, say, playing as a WR and you'd have the POV of the receiver, so you'd have to move your joystick in a certain direction a certain number of times to run the route correctly. If you were too slow or too quick, you'd miss.
BTW, sorry to derail the thread with FOOTBALL talk and not puns or bewbs.

Wasn't it TV sports football

No, that's not it - this one was pretty lame, actually. I've tried Googling it for the last few minutes but can't find it. I remember it being at Babbage's in 1988 but want to say it was old by that point.
Here is a pretty comprehensive list by release date....

Wow, that's a nice list you found there, Grim Reaper. Thanks!
I'm not seeing it though. But then again some of the titles don't have any info either. Ah well, thanks for the list though, that was a nice read through. Amazes me how many football games there were back in the day. Now, not so much.

Yeah, was amazed on how many...I can picture the game you mean, used to have to run precise steps and you looked out their helmet...just can't recall the name, pretty sure it started with a 'g'
Really think this was it...this info is Atari details but was also released for commodore...has n the helmet experience.

Maybe it was. I played it on a PC though, at the store, and it was pretty crappy even by those days' standards. No doubt a PC port of an Amiga product would have suffered by comparison though.
Heh.
I played the very first Madden Football on my C64 back in the 80s. Before that, there was some other football game which was mostly just monochrome lines in 2D. But you could draw up your own plays in that game (from scratch!), which was something amazing back then even if it may have not always worked so smoothly.
LOL. This was my first football game:

I don't think I've played a better sim since this . What did it last until, about 89? Why can't they make a game as simple as this with those wonderful X's and O's.
You guys know that Font Page Football 98 is still the best simulation of football ever made. Somehow the way that the player ratings combine make the players almost frighteningly human. You can still find a lot of the mod stuff that people made for salary cap, roster management, etc on line. Graphics wise it's kind of dated but as far as making plays, team management and league management it is the best. Runs on win7 as well. Although I am looking forward to see what Beyond The Sideline has to offer.

I found this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Page-Sports-Football-Pro-98-PC-Game-CD-ROM-in-Jewel-Case-with-Artwork-/201026021826?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item2ece15a9c2
I own 2 each of the 97 and 98. I haven't played them in a long while but I seem to remember liking the 97 version better.
Looks like it's available pretty readily for $10 to $15 on amazon or ebay used. This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wahP9cwAPHk is a you tube link for gameplay, like I said old but effective. League play is deep and it has the best playmaking editor.

I remember playing it back in the day, it was very good. Just concerned if would work in win 8 and on modern resolutions. You mentioned sites with current rosters and such, you have a link?
^ That's Front Page Sports Football Pro, no?
Man, I LOVED that game. :D
Oh hell ya! FPS Football Pro was awesome. I think the series peaked in 96 and the transition to 3D was a disaster as Dynamix imploded and was bought out. Almost 20 years later and no game has come close to the features and simulation nature of that game. Hold out some hope that this game at least gets on the right track. I miss building a custom playbook, printing it out and then going head to head with a friend with his team and playbook because the game had that cool spreadsheet selection ability for plays in the book. Those were good times. :'(
I had the '95 version, and played that for years.
(Of course, that video play WOULD be against the Vikings...LOL)
On my gaming shelf of fame behind me is the original FPS Football, FPS 95 and FPS 96. Also XOR Football. All in the boxes with floppies and all. 8)
FPS 99 was the disaster that they tried to match madden with, 3d action game, never finished and bad. So bad that Sierra offered refunds for it, unheard of at the time. FPS pro through 98 are all good, just had features added incrementally. I'm still playing a league with a buddy of mine, can't wait to finish the season, draft new players with only a hint of potential and send them to training camp. I don't know about Win8 but runs fine on win7 in admin mode. I also heard that there is a way to play FPS on androids, really gotta look into that.

I'm willing to give it a shot. Probably on my notebook since the screen resolution is probably rather low.
I was curious after seeing everyone mention how FB Pro '98 was the best of it's kind so I grabbed it.
The game installed fine on my Win7-64 but the patch just refuses to run (like most Win95 game patches - they 16bit or something?). Anyone know if there are patch files in a zip instead of this patch EXE?
I see there's a VPNFL mod but I don't think it includes the patch.

Here's the site with the mod and some later season files:

It had some game file rosters and such up to 2003 AFAICT.
Thus far I've ran the un-patched game just fine in Win7. It's just the patch executable that refuses to run. :-\
Thanks to Grim Reaper for extracting the Football Pro 98 patch files and sending them to me. That did the trick!
Now this oldie is running in all it's splendor on my Win7 laptop, with the latest patch. Got halfway through a game. Damn, you guys weren't kidding - the game sims out wonderfully from what I see thus far. The in-game action is very believable. :D
It's been running rock solid thus far. No indications of issues.

It was/is a good game....such a same that all those sports games from Sierra just died and never continued...I could only imagine what they would be like now if they kept up.
FB Pro 98 was running.. well, like a pro. Until I was auto-simming a week. Then it crashed.
"No big deal", I figure. I'll just reload from the last Save. Until I see that my Save Game was gone after trying to reload. WTH? Does this thing use some kind of anti-cheat save system where it deletes your save every time you Load the game? My league career is gone! *Poof*
EDIT: Evidentally I had to go into the Game Type>League menu first and then select "Load". Found it!
As for the gameplay, I would definitely like to see the in-game display used in any newer Football Career Sims. Even such 2D stuff. The play outcomes are pretty realistic and seeing them in action, even despite these old 2D graphics, is great. This one moves rather slow in between play outcomes, though. It takes a little time for the play to end and the outcome to be displayed and you have to wait. I think part of the problem is that it's loading some crap from the disk - perhaps the voice audio explaining the play results - so you tend to twiddle your thumbs a bit. And then the play clock seconds count down faster than it should. Just some side effects of playing an old game meant to be used on 75Mhz processors I suppose. ;)
I'm gonna turn on WinXP compatibility for it (wasn't using any before) but I dunno if it'll stop any future crash. I'll probably just have to restart the program regularly. I had been playing that session for awhile.

I read somewhere that you needed to run the game in admin mode, plus set the file to win98 compatibility...maybe that will help your situation.

I turned on XP compatibility. Dunno if it helps but I played a good long time like that without issue.
It's pretty cool for such an old game but it also doesn't have all the bells & whistles. There isn't much to roster management - you just pick players and keep them indefinitely as far as I can tell. No cap management or anything like that. It's fun to call plays in the game and see decent representations of it happening but it's a bit thin in the General Manager area. Another annoying thing is that the in-game text is so large it often overruns the available window space so game stats & such get cut off easily. If they would've continued the series in this likeness, I too think it would be pretty amazing by now.

One other small tip I found...if you don't want to play the game with the CD in the drive, add the following line to the Setup.ini file.

CDNeeded=No

Nice!
I hate leaving disk in drives - especially on the notebook PC.
But does it still load some stuff from the disk? Like the announcer voice?

Not sure....I would assume everything would be off hard drive at that point.

I believe there is a roster cap and you have to draft players every season so you'll still have to make cuts.
There are a couple of guys who did utilities for 98, salary cap and such, they charged for them in the day but I don't know about now. Sundby and Gelat I think. Makes it deeper. Like I said though the more that you play the more personality that the players seem to assume, strange but true. And I came up with the ultimate blitz play, worked great , a thing of genius. I lost it and can't recreate it.

Well, yes, there are limits on the number of players. Actually the interface isn't very good for managing the roster but that's how stuff was back in the day. ;)
I was speaking of the monetary side of things in regards to cap. Not a big deal as I can delve into FOF7 for that. Calling plays in that one sucks, though. I sim all the games in FOF, whereas it's often tempting to coach each game with this oldie. The transitions are pretty slow, however, so it takes a lot of time to do so.
That is probably the most prohibitive thing about FBPro 98 for me - the downtime between plays ending and calling the next one. Also the screen animations when changing to different sections of the team management part. Lotsa waiting for stuff to fly about and actually show up after I press a menu button. I didn't see any Option for bypassing these window animations.. is there perhaps an INI fix or some such? Speeding up or bypassing what used to be fluff would be wonderful. ;D

This worked for the menus but it ended up asking for a disk when I started to play a game and when trying to use the Game Plan and Play Editor.
Question:
Which Sim Speed setting do you guys typically use in FBPro 98? I've been using Normal speed but simming a week worth of games takes some time. Does using the Quick Sim setting throw off the statistical outcomes noticeably? Or is it fine for running career leagues?
My concern is that the stats may not be good representations of the players' abilities in Quick Sim mode. Some sports sims tend to warn against using the faster such mode for reasons like this.

sounds like it must keep some files on the disk then...would have thought a complete install would have prevented that....

If it's not compressed, you may be able to copy all the files from the disk and paste them into your install folder (NOT overwriting any co pies) and get it to work.
I recall that being the case with some old games that still had audio files and such that it would read from the disk. If you copied them to the install folder, some of those would check there first but they didn't include them on a 'Full Install'. For HDD space saving at the time, obviously.
I've not bothered trying. If it gets to be annoying enough, or I end up having to use it on a trip, I'll just make a virtual CD.
Unfortunate news concerning the developer.....suffered a medical issue...and of course the game as it should be is put on hold....hopefully everything goes well for him and his family.
From OOTP messageboard:
We know there have been questions about the current state of Beyond the Sideline Football's development, given Francis's lack of involvement on the forums in recent weeks.
Unfortunately, Francis has suffered a severe stroke several weeks ago that has left him unable to work on the game for now. We've been communicating with his family, and agreed that any announcement should wait until his recovery path was a little clearer. He is now in the very early weeks of his recovery, and BTS development is temporarily on hold while we discuss our future plans.
We ask that everyone respect Francis's privacy and not inquire about his situation. We also cannot answer any questions about when BTS v1 will be released, nor any other details about the development plans. Please be patient until we are ready to make another announcement. We understand that all of you are very excited about the game, and so are we, but Francis's health comes first. Thank you.
Francis does monitor the forums, though. He currently cannot respond, but he will see and read your posts.
Shit.
:-[
Well, if anyone has development skills and loves American Football, looks like you can apply for being a developer on the game....looks like they now need help for Francis, which is understandable based on circumstances.

I hope it carries on without issues. Sad to see Murphy step in, per usual.
Looks like they finally found a new replacement lead developer so the game can continue development...plus, looks like the original developer is getting better as well.
