If you are serious about tanking then SB is for you. it's not something for the casual WoT player. It also has the BEST community I've seen in any game. There is a large Friday night gathering every week, with large operations that occur at least twice a year.

The price is fairly steep, but it's really the same as two $60 titles, and you will get much more play time and enjoyment.

SB also has the BEST scenario builder that I've seen in any game. It is built with an auto-script tool that makes even complicated scenarios a breeze to produce.

I dabble with it every now and then, and will play coop with a group of friends.

My biggest issue is that SB could be more than just an armor Sim. It has the possibility to be a great combined arms game. The devs are making small progress, but it's slowwww, and they've been clear that it's not the direction they want. It blows my mind because most militaries are moving closer to combined arms doctrine and less tank only warfare.

Speaking of which, another issue that I have is the content. The developer, eSim Games, is clear about their intentions; Steel Beasts is for military contracts. They only add stuff if a country is fitting the bill. There is very little commercial development. Many vehicle in game are unplayable, and have remained so for years.

Hi

Are there any Steel Beasts Pro players on this forum?

1. If so Where are you based? Australia GMT + 10

2. Do you play Online? Yes, weekly

3. Why do you play or not play online? Offline is great, lots of scenarios of different complexity, theatres and equipment, but online is where the sim shines, especially played with experienced tankers. Some folk consider MP to be daunting, until they try it. Welcoming community, very helpful. MP really brings the challenges and rewards

4. Do you play regularly or do you still play? Currently playing regularly (several times per week). Have played on and off depending on life circumstances, since 2006. Might be the longest-lived sim on my PC; and always on the hard drive

5. Has the sim fulfilled your expectations ? If no then why?Exceeded them. Has got better and better as a sim, is rock solid and I have learnt heaps from it

6. Would you buy again? recommend it? Yep. I am always happy to recommend it and promote it to new players

7. Is it worth the price tag ?(in your opinion)Yep, got my money's worth from it

8. What do you think of the Steel Beasts community and support?Top notch. Mix of current/ex military and civvies. Community has some of the usual personality niggles, company support is excellent. Private players are not their core business but they give an inordinate amount of time to us

Thanks for taking the time to answer

You're welcome - jump in. You can get a non-codemeter licence for $10!

Hi
Are there any Steel Beasts Pro players on this forum?  That's me.
1. If so Where are you based? Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada
2. Do you play Online?  No.
3. Why do you play or not play online? Because I have a crap-tastic computer that gives me frame rates of about 12fps.  Prior to v. 3, I could get about 30-40 which is acceptable.
4. Do you play regularly or do you still play?  I played regularly (every other day) until a couple of months ago, then I had to sacrifice my good PC for the "homework" PC so I haven't played a game in over 2 months.  I am definately missing it.  As soon as I pick up another computer (which unfortunately just isn't a huge priority for me for a number of reasons) I will be back in command.
5. Has the sim fulfilled your expectations ? If no then why?  Absolutely.  I've said it before, but I can think of no other AFV sim that even remotely compares to SB Pro PE.  There are so many interesting vehicles, weapons platforms and tactical possiblities available, and each new release just gets better.  This game has grown from a great "study" of the M1A1 and Leopard to a full-blown military AFV simulator.  At the same time, it also shows you certain ideosyncracies and dare I say frailities as well.  Think you are tough stuff in that M1A1?  Not until you see what the Stilleto ATGM can do.  Very humbling, and provides good intellectual reflection on what I can only refer to as real-world challenges facing armor in the 21st century.
6. Would you buy again? recommend it?  In a heartbeat.  I would only recommend it to someone who was keen and wanted to spend time with the game.  This is NOT WoT..it ain't even M1 Tank Platoon II.  You gotta know your vehicle, it's systems and tactics if you want to survive.
7. Is it worth the price tag ?(in your opinion).  I once calculated that since the release of the original Steel Beasts game in 2001(?), I have probably gamed well over 1000 hours into the various iterations.  It is one game (SB, and now SBProPE) that has been on EVERY computer I have ever owned.  So, yeah...I think it is worth it.

8. What do you think of the Steel Beasts community and support?  Community is great but intense.  Some of the folks are former tankers so they know their shit.  Support is great, both from the company and from the user community.  I had a guy help me work through getting set-up on-line (I have nested routers, so I need to do some duplicated port forwarding tricks) which took over 1/2 hour to do.  No complaints at all, and we had a great time chatting over teamspeak.

In my case, the game is shelved. It's good but definitely not my type of game. It has no campaign to keep me coming back for more. I play solo. And after not playing for some time, I need to always relearn it
It.

This is the best armor sim on the market, if you like modern armor you wont be disappointed.  There are thousands of scenarios to choose from plus one of the best editors I've ever used for a game.  There are virtual unit campaigns that go on at the steel beasts community site, but dudes are really serious there when they play Friday nights.  There's guys that play every Monday evening at simHq which is more casual.  Any one can host if you want to do some casual 2 or 3 person coops, I am PST.

Hi

Are there any Steel Beasts Pro players on this forum?

1. If so Where are you based?  Kansas City

2. Do you play Online?  Yes

3. Why do you play or not play online?   Part of a small tight knit group that plays every week (I've been playing games online with one of these guys for nearly 20 years!)   Steel Beasts has been the game of choice for 5 or 6 years.

4. Do you play regularly or do you still play?  Yes

5. Has the sim fulfilled your expectations ? If no then why?  Absolutely.  If you want a tank modern  mechanized warfare tactics sim, this is the cat's pajamas.

6. Would you buy again? recommend it?  Yes; and provisionally yes.  You have to invest time in this to make it worthwhile.  You have to be interested in the subject matter.  It plays at 4 levels:  gunner; tank commander; platoon commander; company commander.  Each is a different challenge.  In my opinion, it gets more interesting as you go up that chain; but others are very happy to be the gunner all the time.

7. Is it worth the price tag ?(in your opinion)  Absolutely.  In terms of hours per dollar it's proven very cheap.  A different look at it: Despite the price tag, my wife doesn't bat an eyelash when I bring up getting the latest version, because she knows that it's going to get a huge amount of play time.

8. What do you think of the Steel Beasts community and support?  Great community - as somebody else noted, small but intense.  People tend to either not like SB, or love it - and the core community loves it.  Human nature plays a role: ask nicely for help and you will get it ("I'm confused by XYZ..."); say negative things their favorite product ("XYZ is dumb because I don't understand it...") and they'll sling sabots at you.  eSim's tech support is generally very responsive and even when things are failing they are open about what they think the problem is (such as in the online licensing SNAFU in the fall of 2013 - it was painful and took a while to get sorted out, but we were told what eSim knew at each step.)

All that being said: I can understand that solo-only players get less out of SB.  That's not the recipe for it becoming a never ending obsession.  The campaign mode that exists in the latest version is limited (admittedly, I tend to divide campaigns into the two categories "Falcon 4" and "Yawn" :)  ) and you don't have the regular scheduled session to keep your skills up.

There are a variety of virtual units you can find at the forums on steelbeasts.com, but I don't really know anything about them.

Some recent brief discussion on SB Pro and watching some vids (from Krause) has me beginning to crack.  Especially since there was some mention of low cost Dongle replacements if they blow up on you.  This makes me think of it more akin to a CD/DVD-ROM, so it's easier to justify the expense if we can get a replacement without re-purchasing.

Now I just have to get over the price hump.  I may consider it next month.  What I wouldn't want to see is purchasing it and then a new version coming out shortly afterward, ending up having to spend more on an upgrade when I could've just waited a bit.   Not really sure how to gauge that.  I suppose it will take some research on their sales policies and whether something big is near?

Vids like this multi-player session are really convincing, however:

I really love to play Sims of all kinds.  Flight sims are great fun but the plethora of extra hardware I have to find space on the desk for, and put on, isn't always ideal for my mood.  This looks like something I could play with mouse, keyboard, and headset as opposed to a big spread of hardware laying about.

Oh another problem with SB Pro is that major patches/upgrades cost money. So I'm now several patches behind as I don't really buy every one of them. Wonder how this affects multiplayer (I don't know since I don't do MP).

That's another Con that still keeps me on the fence.  How often does this happen?  Do these paid updates actually include a lot of new content or are they mostly just patches??

I'm sure you cannot play MP with other people using different versions, of course.

That's an awesome video. I love when multiplayer has a good community...but for some reason I still avoid them.

The couple of times I have found and stuck with an MP community it was BF2 and a racing game (I think it was rFactor1). They were superb - but ended...the BF2 because the group started to drift off with the expansions and also because of in house bickering about donations for servers and the racing one eventually died because some people were just to freakin competitive.

And those experiences, whilst initially positive, reinforced my reasons for staying away from anything online.

*edit*
In fact even on that video you've got someone telling someone else to chill out and calm down...seriously mate - WAY too anal!

To the best of my knowledge you only pay for major upgrades, not patches for example when version 3.0 came out and it is at an upgrade price.  Seems perfectly reasonable to me since no different than other games out there that releases new versions.  There aren't many games if any that give you totally free upgrades when a new version comes out.  I don't believe the major release are that frequent at all.  They definitely don't charge for patches.

The analogy to having a physical cd is a good one.....the dongle really is no different than that since if you lose a cd that is required in the drive to play the game, same result.

Don't forget they do have a subscription based buying model now that does not require a dongle and also gets you all new versions free while subscription is active.  You can pay by month (something like $9) or by year for about $39.  This way you don't have to pay the initial $115 up front and any major upgrades that come out you dont pay.  It seems like a good model for people who may not be 100% sure they will like the game.  You could buy the one month option and then if you like could by annual or dongle version.

Recent paid upgrades have substantial additional content.  It's worth it and definitely not frequent to be annoying.
But I didn't bite because I don't play this a lot.

You have to be on the same version number. If you have V3 which is the latest release then all patches have been free so far. It is on V3.011 and there is a beta 3.019 (both free). You can install the release version and add the beta files(approx 20mb). This allows you to choose what version to run. Simple and effective. When a game is being launched you are made aware of version (2 to choose from) either beta or release.

If you send your damaged usb dongle to Esim they will replace it for approx $30 i believe.

The next paid update is in late summer 2015.I believe could be between $25-$40. If you go for a time limited license the update is included so no extra to pay.

I play on line quite a bit and chat to many SB players. They all have keyboard & mouse some use a joystick. Most prefer mouse.

So monthly cost is circa $9? $108 a year. That could work out expensive if it gets used. On the other hand - what about paid upgrades on top of the base game? And then damaged dongle (do you need the dongle for the monthly subscription option?

Heres the official site that you can purchase from http://www.esimgames.com/?page_id=1361 (http://www.esimgames.com/?page_id=1361)

1 Month = $9.50
4 Months = $24.50
One year = $39.50

But unlike the dongle these licenses are limited to a single pc. Also if the license is valid during the release of a paid update (approx once every 18 months) then you will not have to pay extra. Your license will allow you to use the current version. Just download the update and you are good to go.

Monthly subscription has NO dongle. The security is software based.

Base with dongle is = $115 and paid updates are $25 - $40 (approx every 18 months) all other updates are free.

To answer some questions:

There is a playable chally 2, all the weapon systems fully modeled, i think the 3d interior is still a wip.  The Uhlan ifv is used in the place of the warrior.  There is a UK armor vu that is pretty active playing these vehicles.

The way the pricing works is if you are starting from scatch, the base game is usually between 100 to 120 usd, then what ever the latest paid upgrade version cost is which could be between 30 to 60 usd dependent on amount of content and dev time. (These aren't exact prices I'm just giving you an idea)

If you bought the base game years ago and ate the original hundred dollar cost, then lost touch with the game and missed several paid upgrades, if you buy the 3.0 upgrade you only pay for 3.0 but you get all the content previous released by paid upgrade... So you saved some money by skipping those.

One key feature you might not be aware of that has helped sp for me is the addition of save games in progress, so those 3 hour mega scenarios are now doable.

They operate as the Soviet VU on a Monday with Soviet doctrine, equipment and tactics.

You mean it's $110 for the original version AND another $30 to $40 for the upgrade?!

Hrmm.. this is even more expensive than I had originally thought.  :idiot2:

It is $115 for the life time license. For this you get the dongle which allows you to play on any pc you have installed on. You will have to pay for MAJOR updates. However they are only every 18 months approximately and you get a lot of new content you never originally had. Engine updates and vehicles etc. All other fixes and patches and betas are free.

Or

You can buy the time limited license. There are no paid updates for this type of license. They are free.

The paid update gives you extra content and improvements. Many of you pay for DLC do you not?

As for the $115 price tag. Yes it is comparatively high but many people have played this sim for years and continue to do so. How many other sims/games can make that claim? The $9.50 license is there for people who are not sure about committing.

The community is on the whole more mature than most online communities.

I have it and do NOT regret it.

Back when I took the plunge into that steep sb pro cost, I mulled over as well.  One thing that helped my final decision is that you can usually resell pretty well and at least recoup 80 % of the cost if you absolutely hate the sim.  It's so rare that people usually jump at the chance to get sb pro for 85 bucks as opposed to a hundred plus.  Though I don't play sb pro every day I would never part with it, it one of my all time classics that will be on my hard drive for ever.

So.. if I purchased the dongle...

Does that mean I'd also have to purchase the most recent 'paid update' to have the latest version??

No

If you buy now you will receive V3. That is the latest version. If you had v 2.xx and wanted to go to V3 then it was $40.

So if you buy the $115 dongle you will have the latest version.

Beware if you do buy!!! You will be converted :)

I believe so... Hence why they add the temporary license alternative.  Lot of people show interest in the sim but can't get past the stiff initial price.

Edit... Asid is probably right.... Just the $115 purchase for  everything.

Thanks.  This was something I didn't understand.

I'm sure I'd enjoy it.  It's just that I tend to jump around between different games quite often, depending on my oft-changing period interests.  So the initial cost is cause for even more deliberation since I will likely only play it in spurts, as with everything else.  However, if I do it I'll want to go all-in as I want to avoid "renting" it.

You don't need the manual.  The tutorial and practice missions are enough to get you going.

Purchase and registration/activation was pretty painless

Challenger II looks superb.

I had no idea what to do - so I'll have to look at the controls tomorrow and assign keys (I don't want to use joystick for this)

£6 for a month is nothing really. even if it takes me two or three months to make sure I'll be playing it or not - that's £18. Not a lot and saves me going all in.

What's to lose - except £6.  ;D

Ah so you took the plunge. :D

Might as well reinstall this baby and get the upgrade.

Best advice, pick a vehicle you enjoy and learn the shit out of it. If you try to take on multiple vehicles at once you'll lose your mind. The Leo/Abrams/Chally/T72 are all very unique, with much different fire control systems. Your head will explode from constantly having to reference the manual.

Also, I prefer mouse over stick in game. Just feels another and easier to navigate to UI/Map

Good advice. I started with Abrams then found out the Leo is more complicated. Then stopped playing.  I usually just pick a scenario and play whatever is available. But I see the benefit of sticking to one tank just like in flight simming. And if there are no scenarios, we can make one anyway. Something I haven't done.

I recall the Leo 2's fire control system being easier to use than the M1A1's in the first SB.  That not the case anymore?

Well I really like Microprose M1 Tank Platoon 2. Superb game and graphics actually still hold up.

Others have hit the market, like the T-72 sim...but I don't do Russian armour. The playable Challenger and leopard sold me.

Price of this and implementation always made me hold off on this one. But the monthly sub to give it a go is absolutely fine with me. I know...paying for a demo...when would we ever have thought this day would arrive back in the golden age...but it has and I'm not fussed. £6 is such a small amount to try and see if something suits. I'd rather that than £80 to shelve it.

Anyway - one month - £6 - see what it's like.

I dunno.  I remember the Leo commander can do more than an Abrams commander.
Or maybe just because I got so used to the Abrams.

The m1A2 has all the capabilities of the Leo now, plus the site looks better and higher power zoom.

I absolutely love the M1A2 SEP and its hunter-killer capabilities. I wrote this short piece a while back:

Yeah...the M1A2 is deadly.  The 50X magnification is a nice game changer, and I like the new rounds (primarily the MPAT) that came with the 3.0 upgrade.  That upgrade, by the way, also had other amazing game changers, notably playable Javelin and Stiletto missile systems.  I know there's lots of talk about the price of this game, but I have spent probably hundreds of hours with SB and now SB Pro PE, and it is a game I will always come back to.  Unfortunately for me, I am gaming on a crappy system so I can't play that much anymore, but as soon as I upgrade my system, SB Pro PE will probably be the first or second game I install.

Sabot up!

Ouch...I guess I did.  Well, no going back.  Please select an appropriate meme for my response:
1.  Oh yes I did!
2.  I call 'em as I sees 'em
3.  Oh yeah?  You and what army?
4.  That's just how I roll.
5.  Bam! There it is!
6.  Not.
