I don't think the beta is even scheduled yet so I've not been expecting it for awhile still.
From what little I've gathered it has some card-driven gameplay, kinda strategy boardgame-ish. Which is enough to keep me checking back.
Thanks for the update,
Lord Zimoa! This is one of the games on my "list" (that I'm very much looking forward to). :)

I seem to recall the devs at one point saying they were hoping for sometime this spring. However, even assuming my memory isn't faulty (and please note that I'm *not* assuming that!) -- and setting aside that the devs emphasized that wasn't a firm date -- that comment was made months ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if the release has been pushed back since then.
Yeah, I totally forgot about this as well. I'll add it to my to my list of games I'm looking forward to. I like the look of the map!
Me too. In fact, that map is probably one of the nicest/coolest ones I've ever seen in a strategy game. I think it'll help a lot with lending it atmosphere.
Also, I absolutely love the unit "cards". It gives Sovereignty (to borrow Nefaro's line) something of a board-game feel, which I really like.
Looking forward to this...
Definitely tracking.
Hello! What's this and how did I miss it? Welcome to a snuggly place on my gaming radar, beautiful! :)
Right up your street I would have thought
I really hope the game play is as appealing as the visuals are.

Well if you would just stop by the Matrix/Slitherine forums more than once a year, you might stumble upon the odd gem or two. (That, and/or obsessively search the internet for new fantasy grand-strategy games every few months or so...) :P

Why would I do that when I have my minions here ready to report the latest and greatest? 8)
We've been over this, Dad. I'm not your minion -- not even when I'm mowing your lawn. 8)
I've been browsing the Slitherine website today, and this looks like a very cool game. I'm not sure how I missed news on it before, but development has been proceeding very gradually, so maybe it hasn't received as much press as some of the other titles. Fantasy TBS is totally my favorite genre these days, and any game that bills itself as Master of Magic meets Risk meets Panzer General has my attention!
The notion of a set map and 35 different fixed factions (spread across 5 different races) at the start sounds intriguing. I only hope that they do a decent job of mixing in a P vs E element with a P vs P element, as the best 4x games in recent years have all had a vigorous environmental challenge and fantasy 4x titles in particular offer great ways to work in that player-vs-environment piece. That also lends more randomness to start games, because otherwise, I could see the P-v-P piece getting tiresome.
Aside from the features listing on the Slitherine webpage (which are intriguing but also relatively generic-sounding), I can't find hardly any trade press on this title. That's not a bad thing, but I do hope the developers are able to field the resources to make a tight game.
Of course, I think some of the best entrants in this genre in the last 15 years (Eador: Genesis and the Dominions series both come to mind) have been made by small, indie shops.

Neutral Human naval powers and mercantilist Dwarves. What's not to love? 8)
love me some dwarves - not sure about their ability to be using magic though
Sorry if this has been asked already, is sovereignty going to use random maps or a predefined map? I'm like random maps for replay value but I hope the generator respects the game lore. One of the things that normally irks me in these games is when the lore says a faction lives on an island and is a naval power, and the RNG places them in the middle of a landlocked continent.
Love the art style. One of the few games I plan to purchase day 1 this year.
The strategic map is the same every time. Tactical maps are obviously random.
The real test for this game, I think, is whether the tactical combat will be interesting and nuanced, with a good feedback loop between the strategic game? Otherwise, conquering all those provinces in a generic fantasy-themed Panzer General style assault every turn will get tiresome quickly.
The game looks very intriguing.

My digital D&D dwarves are often slinging God Magicks (they're Clerics). ;) Kinda fun using them as grumpy sorcerors too!

Since it looks to have some card-driven gameplay, like some tabletops, I'm hoping that facet is well done too. That is usually where the gameplay gets mixed up with various random events and such in those types of games. That is where the variability/replayability will likely have to come from.

Have to say, after reading the information and looking at the screenshots, I am very interested in this one. If it is half as fun as Qvadriga, I am all in!

This week's Sovereignty: Crown of Kings Realm Spotlight is on the blasted mines of Cragenwaste...

Goodness. Sounds like I'll be more likely be doing my best to destroy Isengard Cragenwaste than playing them. :P
Question on the Exploit Mines spell: So will that render Wastelands effectively useless once the spell has run its course? I'm guessing Wastelands start with a crappy Economy anyway (and therefore casting the spell can still be worthwhile)...
EDIT: By the way, how many turns does a game last?
Sovereignty: Crown of Kings weekly spotlight: Dragonhold
http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=175&t=49253
The faction updates are intriguing. There's obviously a lot of time and attention spent around the history.
That said, interesting history and backstory will keep a game interesting for the first few hours. After that, it's all about the game play. I do hope that, as the game comes closer to release, more details are provided on how tactical combat plays out.
The comparison to Panzer General is very intriguing. But, at the end of the day, it only becomes useful if there's an entertaining feedback loop between the strategic map (where you get to research/recruit units and abilities) and the tactical map (where you get to use them).
All the colorful back story in the world won't do much good if all my infantry feels like a 4-3 Medium Infantry or a 2-4 Light Infantry once I start the fighting.
I don't know. Lore can make a world of difference where immersion is concerned. At least, that's generally been the case for me.
Not that gameplay isn't crucial, of course. However, I find it's empty without background/context to give it meaning.

Okay, these guys sound like they could be a *lot* of fun to play! Assuming I get this game, I had been thinking my first play-through would be with the Boruvian Empire, but I may have just changed my mind. (I wonder how many times I'll say that before all the playable nations are revealed...) ;D

Thanks RedArgo. I sometimes forget I can check the Matrix site as well.
Sonneneve is looking good. I do like me some classic High Elves. :)
Another good preview. Any idea on a release date?
I wish Matrix would do these weekly previews for more of their upcoming games.

Please God no.
The Slitherine site is a mess, IMO. Trying to find a patch for a specific game there is a damn nightmare. I recall having to dig through many pages, individually, looking for the latest FOG patch a few years ago. Took me a long time. I recently tried with something else and gave up after not finding a well-organized list. At least Matrix is easier to navigate, and their patches have been linked directly on the front page (and alphabetically on one screen!) in recent times.

I rarely go to Slitherine, so I didn't know that. In that case move everything to Matrix! I do wish all forums were like this one though, when you push new, it actually goes to the new messages. Most either just go to the bottom or just start at the top.

I would support them combining into the Matrix site's format, of course. The Slitherine one can be troublesome IMO.

Originally this was slated for a 2012 to 1st quarter 2013. I'm glad to see it growing but I kind of get concerned when games are delayed for long periods. This game looks really cool though
This week's Sovereignty spotlight is on the great hinterlands of the Iron Barony, home of the Orcs!
http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=175&t=49775
Interesting. Kinda like Mordor/Isengard, except this time they're their own people, with no uber-powerful Maiar bossing them around. What could orcs do when controlling their own destiny? Hmm...
Sovereignty weekly spotlight are the inland barbarian tribes of Vessoi, who live free in the great Northern steppes.
http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=175&t=49879
I think we need to hear more about The Horde... ;D
The Vessoi need a better, less decadent-Greek, more Nordic sounding name. How about 'the Vesslung' or ' the Vessarkin' or even 'Vessentruar'.
I, for one, cannot wait for Martok's Real Earth mod for this game. :P

As
Nefaro said, I'm pretty sure map movement is province-based. A lot of the game's spells and unit/hero abilities are province-based, and some of their descriptions add further weight to this theory.

Yeah I like these too
I have to say, I'm pretty impressed so far with how different the factions sound (at least on paper) -- with ~35 of them, that's gotta take some dedicated design and balance work. Here's hoping they feel as different in the actual game. :)

First round of codes went out the other day. I know Martok, Son of Montfort, and myself are all in. I have no idea of the schedule for the next round.
I have to say, I really like the description & background given for all the nations so far. I think it helps a lot with atmosphere, and really gives the various factions a sense of identity...along with maybe/hopefully a goal for the player to strive for when controlling whatever nation it is they choose.
