There will be banished, Rome 2, and eu4 Austria - no gaming all week - it's good to be back

Welcome back, undercovergeek!

I wish it were so simple for me to name the games I will be playing this weekend. Probably some Banished and perhaps some Civ5 and XCOM. If I take the plunge and buy Commander: the Great War (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/385/details/Commander-TheGreatWar) while it is 50% off I will be playing that. It's just that I have so many games on my gaming plate that I don't need to add to the backlog.

Or perhaps none of the above.

It's a Matrix weekend - Quadriga & LnL:HoS.

I hope this weekend doesn't end up like last weekend and I get to busy to do any gaming.  I hope to get some Rome II in and maybe some JTCS.

Maybe some Baniahed.
Some work on LnL:HoS, new units and maybe a map.
Vassal work.
Trying not to buy Quadriga.... Don't need another game.... Don't need another game.... :P

Baniahed? Cool. What is it?  :P

I won't be playing anything this weekend. I am off to Scotland with my youngest daughter for the penultimate round of the 6 Nations rugby tournament - Scotland v France at Murrayfield.

COME ON SCOTLAND!!

The weather is supposed to be nice, so, I will be playing the Yard Work game for part of the time.  When I am inside resting from my endeavors, it will most likely be EUIV Castile.

This weekend, i intend to play the following games:

- Storm over the Pacific pbem: playing as Japan against one of the most experienced players (gwgardner)...while i've had the game for a long time, i never played more than a few turns...i guess the Empire of the Rising Sun will suffer a major defeat...again.  :o. I'll do my best.
- Star Trek: birth of the Federation: playing as the Romulans...it's an old game and i am passed 400 turns into the campaign...the setup seems fine now for a major war with the Federation (more than 22 systems) or the Cardassians who are my direct neighboors. I am already at war with the Ferengis but they are far now since it took Vulcan from them, eh, eh.
- Imperium Galacitica: continuing my campaign with the rank of Admiral...focussing on research and developping my colonies before a new war starts.

In my last race my auriga was well in the lead  when his chariot fell apart at the start of the third lap.  He hung on to the reins and still would have won if he hadn't died just short of the finish line.

Give in.  You know you want this.

Wrapping up Rome 2 for now...thanks for the memories, Iceni. It's been real. So that leaves some AoE 2 HD Wallachia campaign, maybe some Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and most definitely some Dark Mod. Once I have cleansed my gaming palette with those I want to start a new Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai campaign.

Not entirely sure what else I'll be playing, but I managed to port HOI: Darkest Hour to my Falcon super-but-old-XP2 laptop last night, along with my save games, so tonight at least I fully intend to continue my World War One campaign as Ethiopia/Abyssinia. Preparations for action are just about done; Ethiopian Christmas is past; it's time to tell Italy to get the hell off our coastlands (while they're busy being distracted by Germany and Austria kicking all kinds of ass at the top of 1915, and probably wishing now they hadn't dropped out of the Powers before the war started. ;) )

I started with exactly one solid division of 1890s infantry (the Imperial Guard, naturally), and about 20 divisions of 1870s infantry with only 1000 troops apiece (a little less than 6% strength). Got rid of four or five divisions, and my key assault divisions are up to full strength (or not far from it) and 1890s kit!  ...we still have a long way to go.  :-[

Now with 500% more AAR. (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=9486.0)  8)

I'll be playing a lot of Diablo 3. Blizzard is giving +50% experience until the expansion is released. In one week I've got my wizard up to level 50. Wasteland 2, Distant Worlds, and Command are other possibilities when I need a break from killing the spawn of hell. If schedules work out, hopefully will be able to continue the EUIV mp game Metal Dog and me started last weekend.

I plan to do a little Drox Operative, and maybe peck away at the campaign game of Loren: Amazon Princess.  The latter title's mechanics are pretty conventional, but the script-writing and story development are far more elaborate than most games I've tried playing these days.

I may also fool around with the demo of Unity of Command, but the hex-based WW II titles just don't seem to be doing it for me these days.  I must be getting old.

HOI3: Their Finest Hour.  JH's thread got me into this game that I had owned but never played.  Playing as the USA in the campaign starting in 1936. It's now March 1940. Things are just getting interesting and soon to get hot....I just hope I researched the right stuff and built what I need to at least stay alive when the sh...t hits the fan.

Decisive Campaigns-- WtoP. After letting this game kick me in the face a few times, I think I know how to play it and so will start the full campaign. And Rome 2 if I want to look my enemies in the eyes for a change.

I'm finishing a couple of reviews on Lock n Load's Blood and Bridges and Operation Garbo. No gaming there, I've already done enough - gotta finish the write-ups though, which I should do this weekend.

Then going to play some Birth of the Federation to continue that AAR for the site as well.

After that I want to play some more Commander: The Great War.

I have other reviews to write also...the "work" is never done! :D

This is something I wrote a long time ago for DC:WtP. It might help with some ways to get better at the game.

I'd be interested in your write ups Banzai Cat - especially on Blood and Bridges. Everytime I try to get into it, I lose track (of rules I think generally) and stall.

I have started an AAR and hope to complete it one day soon.

Thanks Barth. That did help especially with the stacking limits and changes to unit effectiveness. The game's kind of discouraging because the enemy never seem to run out of units, they're everywhere. But if you look closely, their values will change depending on what you do and they then gradually weaken and become easier to kill. Is there a way to see what the enemy supply status is and what effect does out of supply have on them? 8)

Trying to scratch the old X-COM itch.  I've decided to take Xenonauts out for a spin.  So far so good.  Easy enough to pick up right away.  My only gripe so far is how awful the soldier's initial uniforms look.  I'm really surprised those got the thumbs up.  I'll be looking around later for a mod for those things.

You can kind of see their supply status/lines by looking at your own supply overlay. Anywhere you have supply they don't. It's a bit easier to spot their cut off units or about to be cut off units this way.

Being out of supply for a couple of days doesn't do much, but after about 4 days (I think been a while since I played) their readiness will drop and they will die easily when attacked.

They won't die though unless you attack them. But when their readiness drops to 0 they can't move either so sometimes it's just a good idea to surround and let them become useless... unless they are on a bridge you need for your own supplies.

Mainly FSX by flying with FS Captain and trying to keep my fake job.  Also will be playing Darkest Night finally followed with I am not sure.... I have decided since getting back into Computer Gaming just picking about 3 or 4 games and finishing them through before moving on.... too much ADD.   So possibly Crusader Kings II, Fallen Enchantress, ________

Some more Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes for sure.  Also, now that the new update has been released, I'll probably take Pandora: First Contact for another spin.  And since I caved and bought it during Matrix's weekly sale, I would really like to get some time in with Commander: The Great War as well.

Steve58, I can provisionally recommend Galactrix: Puzzle Quest as a gem-matching puzzle based space RPG. I say "provisionally" because it's unstable on Win8 and tends to randomly crash, mitigated but not eliminated by turning off the music. The background tends to whirl around to induce vertigo, too -- an intentional stylistic choice but  :P

They really are horrible. Been meaning to search for a mod that changes them. Other then that, its a great game, even in beta. The last few updates have made huge strides forward. After playing Xenonauts, I don't think I'll ever go back to Firaxis's XCom.

Continued my Rome II Vanilla Campaign

Did quite a few email turns in my CMBN game versus Con ... I"m getting Panzer Blitzed!

I guess their uniforms don't really matter since very few of them have gotten a chance to wear them more than once.  :'(

This game is good...and challenging to say the least.  I can't wait to see how the final version shapes up.

Nice!  I've always wanted to buy a wheel and pedals but I just don't play driving sims enough to justify the expense.  Euro Truck Simulator 2 however is that good of a game that I'm thinking about it.  Right now I'm using an Xbox gaming controller and I'm pleased with it's performance but I imagine the immersion factor of using a wheel and pedals must be awesome.

It's 1466 in Castile.  I declared war on Granada in 1460, a week after the truce expired.  I neglected to check her allies and realized I am now in a war with Morrocco, the Ottomans and Athens as well as Granada.  The Ottomans have sent two of my fleets to the ocean floor along with several thousands of my (transported) troops.  I am hemorraghing money in an effort to build land and naval forces back.  They won't accept a White Peace or even let me surrender.

I do have a better quality of troop now.  And the navy I am putting together should be able to hold off the Ottomans.  We shall see what we shall see come next time.

Despite my picking up CM : BN with the Commonwealth expansion last weekend, it's all about South Park : The Stick of Truth this weekend. I'm about 3 and a half hours in, and enjoying it so far.

I've been working a number of board game trades and auction buys over the past couple of weeks, and they've started arriving. I'll definitely get Robinson Crusoe on the table, and try to at least read the rules and mess around a bit with Last Will and Eclipse. I've also got two more boxes to ship out...

Same game (I think), playing as France. I won the 100 years war (of course), and took all but Calais from England. I waited a couple of years, then went to war against Burgundy to take Picardie, which would give me access to Calais. A month after I declare war, my king died of natural causes and left me with a regency. a year later, I was on my way to winning the war, when Burgundy's king died in battle, which triggered the event that will split Burgundy's lands between Austria and France. So instead of one province, I got 7-8 out of the war. I've not kicked England out of Calais, and have vassalized Scotland (who Englands reduced to 2 provinces). I've now got 34,000 troops now in Scotland just waiting to get the word to go. I'm just waiting for my own naval construction program to finish up. I'm also hoping I can convince MD to let me borrow his fleet as well.

If you take and hold your war objective, you will get a ticking warscore. Assuming you can keep your war exhaustion in check, you might be able to wait them out until they will surrender.

I'm intending on focusing on Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, I've had it since it was Elemental, bought all the DLC but never really got into it even though RPG and 4X are things I really like. With a major patch and new DLC round the corner I'm going to aim to play at least to turn 100 probably further to see if it finally clicks with me.

However I've already been distracted by Judge Dredd - Dredd vs Death which I've picked up on the GOG weekend sale for just over £1. Only played 15 mins or so but I've already lost the Tutorial - Judge Wolfe got a bit trigger happy with incendiary shells from his Lawgiver during hostage rescue training, was declared Rogue and then taken out by the Special Judicial Squad that was sent to apprehend him !

They won't accept a White Peace or even let me surrender.

If you take and hold your war objective, you will get a ticking warscore. Assuming you can keep your war exhaustion in check, you might be able to wait them out until they will surrender.

Yes.  It's the same game.  It's pissing me off that I can't get the Morroccans to capitulate.  I have Granada.  And the Warscore IS ticking in my favor, I just don't want to wait that long ;)  Once that whole mess is over, you may borrow (what's left of) my fleet.

Thanks Jason, I'll check it out.

Rather a complex question at the moment.  On the plus side, Castile is an ideal starting country for me (thanks for the suggestions to that effect).  There is enough income, troops, goals, and, 'stuff going on,' to keep me engaged.  On the negative side, I don't grasp some of the mechanics well, if at all.  I know Trade is important, and I have figured out some ways to affect it, but I don't know how effective my measures are or if there is something I could be doing that is much better.  My grasp of the history of that  time is poor.  Which is easily remedied, but, my grasp is poor for a reason.  That time period just doesn't hold my interest well.

Having said that, you might ask yourself, "Then why did you buy the game in the first place?!"  Simple.  I love games.  More specifically, Paradox games.  And I will bash away at this until I figure out what I am doing and get decent enough not to embarrass myself when playing MP.  I might even subject you people to an AAR.  So there :P

Pretty sure I gave some tips on running your Trade Routes in a big EU4 thread on these forums.  It's not very difficult once you know what the handful of trade node settings & strategies are, and how "the flow" of wealth works.

I've read the Wiki, and I feel an idiot for not understanding what they are writing.  In English even!  As a matter of fact, I've read the Wiki back to front and refer to it when I have a question of what I am doing.  It'll just take repeated play by me in order for some of that to sink in.

You are not alone. I've read lots of stuff on the trade system and still don't understand it.... I know how to put ships on trade protection, move merchants to certain trade nodes... but have no clue on how to get feedback if my actions are having any effect.... that's what I find most frustrating.

Thanks, geek.  Another part of my problem is, I don't have enough time in the game yet.  Literally.  It starts in 1444 and I have gotten into the 1460's.  So, there's that.  I guess I am like every one else I know, I want to be good at something and understand it fully without having put in the time and experience.  Like I said earlier, repeated play will be my teacher.

I'll be playing some more EU4 before long.  I will post details on how I get feedback on how well my trade routes are working, once my campaign matures.  It may be a bit, still, since I recently picked up FM2014 and Qvadriga, but I've been getting the itch to get the latest EU4 expansion and play again.

It's been awhile, but I recall that when a trade node is selected you can get an idea of how much you are making there through that trade node's interface.  I always tried to keep enough trade power via ships, buildings, etc in nearby trade nodes that have an overall high monetary value to get at or very near the top of the trade power list.

Unlike EU3, which was just an annoying Whack-A-Mole mechanic you had to constantly babysit, the trade system in EU4 is more interesting and you only need to check it here & there after you've built up supremacy in a node.  The AI tends to give up and go to easier pastures when you've loaded up a juicy one with your trade strength.  Frigates ftw!

After you expand and get some good strength into decent trade nodes, you can rake in a lot of ducats.

I played Romance of the Three Kingdoms III and I may have played Nobunaga's Ambition II, but I'm not sure if I did or just tried to get a PC version of it. That's been over twenty years ago and KOEI games for the PC were hard for me to get my hands on. Those were very good games back in the day.

It's a shame that they don't anymore.  There certainly is a fairly large fanbase but evidently Koei has decided that the North American market is only good for the Dynasty Warrior clones.  There just doesn't seem to be enough of a market here to sell these strategy titles.  Many gamers therefor resort to importing console games or the japanese windows version of the pc games.  The Romance and Nobunaga series are available on PC just not here.  The last Kessen they made which they did sell here in North America was Kessen III for the PS2.  It wasn't a bad game either.

And it's good to see that there are several other grogs here that enjoyed the old Romance and Nobunaga series back in the day.  I had them all for NES and SNES.   :)

2 - 3 Panzer Battles Kursk South PBEM's.

2 Nepkhaevo PBEM's, both with me as the Axis.

A Panzer battalion from Totenkopf with 34 Panzer IV G's, 10 Panzer IV F1's and 24 Panzer III M's, together with about a battalion of infantry vs. a Guards Tank Brigade with 30 T 34's, 20 Churchills, 21 T-70's and a weak battalion of infantry support. Not an entirely even setup, but the Soviets can put up a fight.

In the first PBEM, I've lost 6 tanks, 5 to enemy fire (I believe 4 Panzer IV G's and 1 Panzer III M) and 1 Panzer III M to a breakdown. The Soviets have thus far lost 34 T-34's and Churchills.

The second PBEM has barely started.

They come through Tucson every few years.  4 or 5 years ago I took my wife (her first time seeing them, although she's a Deadhead), we had 2nd row seats and she loved it.  Acoustic, iirc.  They came through again back in January with Leon Russell, but I was working and we couldn't go. No you can also get it for PS3 as well.

I use www.yesasia.com to import my games.  You can also try www.playasia.com as well.  I'm happy to report that I've never had any issues getting games from them.

The only way I've heard of people getting their hands on a PC version is through various individuals who buy local and sell globally.  Unfortunately the cost is way too high in my opinion and some of these guys are thieves.  Still, people do report that they get the games for PC and patches which convert most of the menus and texts to english.  Check out the forums over at www.kongming.net for more information.  Yeah it doesn't make sense to me to get the PC version because of the costs which is why I got PS3 and PS4 in the first place.  Those machines are region free and the console version of these games are a lot more affordable to get and from reputable dealers like the ones I mention above.

Here are two examples of how to get the PC version of these games:

Unfortunately no but I'm working on translating the manual.  These games are not that hard to play it's just a matter of learning which button to press in order to issue certain commands.  Then there is the menu items you need to select depending on the circumstances.  Like when you want to build a market in a fief you could accidentally hit the build farm instead.

I'd be happy to share my translation results in an AAR down in the console forum.   :)

Note: traditionally the Nobanuga's Ambition and R3K games are turn based strategy games with RPG elements; and there are versions available in North America for both the consoles and PC. Just not the latest one (yet).

The action beat-em-up series (which has a number of light tactical/strategic developments in the past 10 years or so) is Dynasty Warriors (for Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Samurai Warriors (for the Shogun wars), plus the Orochi series (which combines characters from both series in a more overtly fantasy campaign). I'm pretty sure there are PC ports, and always NA localization. Some of the 'Warrior' line don't get PC ports, such as the games based on the anime One Piece storyline (I've played the first game and it's pretty decent) and various Gundam series mashups, but they often do have NorthAm localizations.

There was a far more purely strategic series for R3K storyline only called Dynasty Tactics (1 and 2, no reason to get 1 really as 2 has more details but the same story), for managing large armies during R3K campaigns; only for consoles so far as I know, and was last published (in North America anyway) in the PS2 era. I adore my PS2 copy.  ;D It has cinematic scenes running in the background when various things happen on the battle map.

The Kessen series is an RTS, somewhat like the "Warriors" series except for groups of companies, with increasing amounts of RPG bling, heavily based on the same art and mechanics of the other series. Kessen 1 (as the Japanese name would imply) dealt with the Shogun storyline, but was superceded totally by Kessen 3. Kessen 2 used the R3K storyline, and looks pretty primitive compared to Kessen 3, but is still a fun way to blow a weekend. All three games were only for consoles in North America I think.

The latest Kessen game (so far as I know) to be released in North America isn't called Kessen. It's called Bladestorm: the Hundred Years War, and is set during Britain vs France's late medieval war which ended with Joan of Arc. It is very excessively awesome, although it didn't get good reviews for some reason. :) But (in North America at least) it's only available for PS3 and XB360.

Lots of reviews at Gamerankings for Bladestorm: http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?search=Bladestorm&numrev=3&site=
